Dear Alumnae/i and Friends: No matter what the season in Cleveland, the College campus has its own rhythms. Semesters follow each other in regular order, while the calendar cycles from Advent to Christmas, then Lent to Easter.

This year Ursuline College added its own special celebrations.

In fall, we hosted a traveling exhibition, “Ohio Women Vote: 100 Years of Change,” recognizing the centennial of women’s suffrage. Distinguished alumna Mary Rose Oakar ’62 spoke at the opening of the exhibit, which Ohio History Connection brought to campus thanks to the diligence of Dr. Bari Oyler Stith, chair of our Historic Preservation Department. The event provided a perfect opportunity to highlight that program, which includes the only bachelor’s degree of its kind in Ohio and one of the state’s few master’s programs. You can read about it on page 15.

It should be no surprise to learn that when Ohio Chancellor of Higher Education Randy Gardner visited in September and asked to hear about what makes Ursuline College distinctive, we described our focus on women’s leadership and introduced him to Dr. Stith and our Historic Preservation program. (page 4) Naturally we also introduced the chancellor to faculty and students from our Breen School of Nursing, while we noted its 100% employment rate postlicensure, its 94% first-time passage rate on the national nurse licensing exam, and its 2020 ranking by College Factual as #2 out of 22 colleges of nursing in Ohio and #39 out of 518 nursing schools nationwide. In this issue of Voices, you will read about other notes of distinction for the School, including a federal grant for graduate nursing education (page 2) and a national honor bestowed on Dean Patricia Sharpnack ’84 (page 4).

Stories on page 10 and 20 pay tribute to caring and compassionate graduates of the St. John College nursing program, which was folded into Ursuline College and became The Breen School of Nursing. Clearly St. John’s legacy of academic rigor and patient-centered care lives on – and flourishes – here.

Even as we mark accomplishments like these today, we look ahead to 2021, when the College will mark its sesquicentennial. On page 6, former president Sister Anne Marie Diederich, OSU, ’66 notes that a 150-year history of women’s leadership at Ursuline College deserves to be celebrated.

Our celebration of that heritage is also our commitment to our future.

Just as it inspires pride in our past, it encourages, motivates, and inspires our students today. Many thanks to each of you for being part of Ursuline College across the years and the seasons of its long, rich history.

Campus News $450,000 federal grant will equip future advanced practice nurses to treat opioid addiction A $450,000 federal grant will enable advanced practice registered nurses who graduate from Ursuline’s master’s and post-master’s programs to administer medication-assisted treatment for patients with substance use disorder.

The award from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration is shared by Ursuline’s Graduate Nursing Program and the University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy and enables faculty to integrate medicationassisted treatment into the graduate nursing curriculum in response to the opioid epidemic. Associate Professor Mary Beth Zeni, RN, ScD, is principle investigator.

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration is an agency of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Say Yes, Say Amen scholarships assist Northeast Ohio students Ursuline College has committed to awarding full-tuition scholarships to graduates of six Greater Cleveland Catholic high schools and five Cleveland Metropolitan School District high schools.

The College’s new Say Amen to College Scholarship is available to graduates of Villa AngelaSt. Joseph High School (VASJ), Beaumont School, Saint Joseph Academy, Cleveland Central Catholic High School, Trinity High School, and Saint Martin de Porres High School. The Say Yes

to Education Compact includes more than a dozen colleges and serves graduates of Cleveland’s public high schools.

Nursing dean, grads recognized by the American Academy of Nursing Three nurse leaders who graduated from Ursuline College were inducted as 2019 fellows of the American Academy of Nursing, one of the highest honors for nursing internationally, in recognition of their extraordinary commitment to the promotion of public health. Honored were Patricia A. Sharpnack DNP, RN, CNE, NEA-BC, ANEF, FAAN, dean of Ursuline’s Breen School of Nursing (Class of 1984); K. Kelly Hancock, DNP, RN, NEBC, FAAN, executive chief nursing officer, Cleveland Clinic Health System and chief nursing officer, Cleveland Clinic Main Campus (Class of 1994); and Beth Faiman, PhD, CNP, FAAN, nurse practitioner in the Cleveland Clinic’s Department of Hematologic Oncology and Blood Disorders (Class of 1996).

For a sense of scale, there are some 4 million nurses in the United States and just over 2,000 are fellows of the American Academy of Nursing.

Chancellor of Higher Education learns what makes Ursuline unique Ohio’s Chancellor of Higher Education Randy Gardner visited campus in September.

After a tour of campus, he met with students and faculty to learn about a few of the ways that Ursuline stands out among Ohio colleges and universities.

Serving in South Africa Counseling and Art Therapy students, alumnae, faculty served others in South Africa Sixteen alumnae, students, faculty, and community members traveled to Port Elizabeth South Africa last summer to work with a volunteer organization, United through Sport, helping underprivileged children engage in sports, literacy projects, and a teen girls empowerment program. The group worked in two schools, engaging children with creative arts, book reading, recreational activities, and yoga.

“One of the highlights of our trip was when we got to teach a dance to the girls empowerment group,” said Katherine Jackson, PhD, ATR-BC, associate professor, Counseling and Art Therapy Department. “We had hired a local dance studio in Cleveland, Jordan Center for Dance, to teach our group a simple, choreographed dance number so we could engage the teen girls with a fun activity. Not only did the Ursuline group have a joyous and fun time, but so did the girls. Who knew we could dance?”

Jackson said the group learned about apartheid and the vast inequality that has been left in the wake of this racially generated oppressive system. “We tried to form relationships with the kids and provide some meaningful and heartfelt activities to help increase their self-esteem and confidence. Some of the activities involved all-about-me books and goal paper chains which we hung around the classroom.”

150th Anniversary Co-Chairs prepare for sesquicentennial celebrations The year 2021 will mark the 150th anniversary or sesquicentennial of the founding of Ursuline College in 1871 and two loyal alumnae are already making plans for a fitting celebration.

Sister Anne Marie Diederich, OSU, PhD ’66 and Denise San Antonio Zeman ’74 have volunteered to co-chair the sesquicentennial committee.

For Sister Anne Marie, president of the College from 1986 to 1996, the sesquicentennial provides an opportunity to celebrate women’s leadership.

“I’ve always been proud of the fact that, from the very beginning, in 1871, Ursuline has had women in leadership,” she said. “When I was president and a participant in the Women’s College Coalition, I became aware of the fact that this was unique. Even colleges like Smith were sponsored and run by men until 1975.

So Ursuline’s long period of leadership and modeling for women what they could do and be has always been significant to me. I think that we need to celebrate that.”

Zeman was a student when the College celebrated its centennial in 1971. “I volunteered and got to attend the centennial ball and for me to see all these people, these prominent

Cleveland citizens and alumni and benefactors, celebrating my college was very moving, very touching.”

In fact, said Zeman, the experience of that centennial ball stayed with her in her professional life running nonprofit hospitals and then in philanthropy. “I understand the importance of philanthropy and of celebrating and publicly acclaiming what Ursuline is. To celebrate the tradition of women leaders of this college is significant.”

Alumnae and friends enjoy breathtaking sites in Italy The College’s November trip to Italy was a great success, leaving travelers with new friends and wonderful memories of art, architecture, church history, language, music, and, of course, food.

Organized by Go Ahead Tours, the trip began in Venice and ended in Rome. In between those two iconic cities, the group visited Florence and the hill towns of San Gimignano, Sienna, and Assisi.

“The local guides at each stop were informative and charming. The scenery, both natural and humanmade, was breathtaking. The good times were as plentiful as the delicious pasta,” said Vice President for Institutional Advancement Richard J. Konisiewicz.

Career Services re-imagined: Assessments, coaching, and skills certification help students map their futures Career success today requires key professional skills that are not typically taught in college classrooms.

Thanks to a new partnership with the organization futureplans.com, Ursuline students can now earn certification in the very skills employers say they’re looking for.

Through futureplans.com, the College has brought on board Career Development and Placement Specialist Julie Jones (pictured with a student), as well as several career coaches. “The key to leading a fulfilling life lies in discovering your purpose and direction,” said Jones, former University of Akron head softball coach. “We coach students toward that discovery, with tools that help them learn what they have to offer and how they best fit into the world.”

Students start their interaction with the CareerFIT office, as it is now called, by taking an assessment to highlight their aptitudes, interests, work values, personality, and passions. They meet with a career coach who helps them understand the results of that assessment, explore potential career matches, and map out an educational and internship path to get there.

Next, students complete at least two – or as many as five – online professional skills certification courses.

Once they successfully complete these modules, they earn nationally recognized certification in: • Self Management • Communicating Clearly • Working on Teams • Thinking on your Feet (Critical Thinking) • Problem Solving/Problem Identification “Employers like to see this evidence of a student’s preparation for the work world,” said Deanne Hurley, vice president for student affairs. “We are not leaving career preparation to chance; we are being very intentional in the services we provide and the way we communicate with students.”

Grateful for a broad-based education, Gail Crupper Simonetti SJC ’72 is assisting graduate nurses An accomplished nurse, Gail Crupper Simonetti SJC ’72 knows firsthand that quality patient care requires both skill and heart. She embraced this lesson from St. John College in her long career at Fairview Hospital, Parma Community General Hospital, and MetroHealth, working in ICUs and with pediatric patients.

“At St. John, they taught us we needed to be able to talk about more than nursing,” she recalled.

Ursuline College would prepare me to be an excellent nurse practitioner.”

The Simonetti Endowed Scholarship was a pleasant surprise to King and a blessing that she hopes to pay forward in her career.

In gratitude for her education, Simonetti and her husband, John, established the Gail Crupper Simonetti, SJC ’72 Endowed Scholarship Fund for Graduate Nursing Students.

“We have been very blessed in what we have been given and want to pay it forward,” Simonetti says. “This is the first endowed scholarship at Ursuline College for graduate students, who don’t normally have opportunities to receive financial aid

Senior Computer Support Specialist Bobby Boos received a 2019 Staff Excellence Award in recognition of his performance and dedication.

Dean of Graduate and Professional Studies Jim Connell, PhD, was the facilitator for The Literacy Cooperative of Cuyahoga County Teacher Academy attended by some 120 primary teachers from Greater Cleveland. He gave a presentation to the Pope Francis Leadership Initiative on “Instructional Leadership for the 21st Century.” He received the Marie LoPresti Faculty Award for Social Justice and Community Service.

Sr. Christine De Vinne, OSU, PhD ’73, president, celebrated her jubilee (50th anniversary) as an Ursuline Sister in July. She was selected as a member of the Leadership Cleveland Class of 2020.

MBA Program Executive Director Debra Fleming, DBA, MBA, CPA, had one of her research papers accepted for presentation at the Clute International Academic Conference on Business. The paper is titled “Entrepreneurial Leadership and Strategic Management: Deciphering Clusters of Dynamic Capabilities Using a Case

Suzanne M. Fortuna, ’92, ’03 MSN, ’17 DNP, RN, Post-MSN, APRN-BC, CNS, FNP, adjunct clinical faculty, was nominated for APRN above and beyond by APP Council at MetroHealth. She gave presentations at the OSU APP conference and the OAAPN statewide conference on how implementing a mentor program in a Level 1 trauma emergency department enhances retention and hiring.

She is the new president elect for Emergency Nurses Association, Greater Cleveland Chapter and continues with the Lake County Chapter for OAAPN. Avery Friedman, JD, who teaches Constitutional Law in the Legal Studies program, gave a lecture titled “Where the Rubber Meets the Road: The Realities of Federal Civil Rights Practice” at the University of Utah’s S.J. Quinney College of Law. He reviewed basic federal civil rights statutes including Title VII, Title VIII, Title II, Title IX, ADEA, and the Reconstruction-era statutes, among others, and talked about how lawyers can do good and do well.

Stephen Gallas, MFA, adjunct faculty in English, had a short story collection, “A Bridge Abridged,” published by Adelaide Books.

Assistant Professor and Women’s Center Co-Director Jessica Headley, PhD, LPC, was honored as one of YWCA’s 2019 Distinguished Young Women. Honorees were chosen for their career accomplishments, community service involvement, and commitment to YWCA’s mission to eliminate racism and empower women.

Nancy Lick, BFA, MA ’13, adjunct instructor of art, had a solo exhibit in September at the Annex Gallery at Loganberry Books. It celebrated the history of immigration in the U.S with 35 paintings and drawings of immigrants arriving through Ellis Island from 1870-1920.

Counseling and Art Therapy visiting instructor Gretchen Miller, ’99, MA, ATR-BC, ACTP, was re-elected to serve a second term on the American Art Therapy Association Board of Directors. She was awarded Honorary Life Membership by Ohio’s Buckeye Art Therapy Association Board of Directors.

RN-BSN Coordinator and Assistant Professor Gina Prosser, DNP, RN, received the 2019 Advising Excellence Award. She had an article titled “Using the Unfolding Scenario to Promote Clinical and Operational Thinking in Long-Term Care” accepted for publication in The Director: Official Journal of the National Association of Directors of Nursing Administration in Long Term Care.

faculty & staff news Undergraduate Art Therapy Program Director Jennifer Schwartz Mrazek, ’93, MAAT, ATR-BC, ATCS, is the lead author for a quantitative study that was accepted for publication in Art Therapy: Journal of the American Art Therapy Association. The article is titled “Undergraduate art therapy education in the United States survey report.” She presented her findings at the meeting of the AATA in October.

Mary Beth Zeni, ScD, MSN, RN, associate professor of graduate nursing, was recognized in July by Crain’s Cleveland Business as one of this year’s Notable Women in Education. She had a textbook, “Principles of Epidemiology for Advanced Nursing Practice - A Population Health Perspective,” published by Jones & Bartlett Learning.

Assistant Professor Lynn Ulatowski, PhD, had an article, “Vitamin E Sequestration by Liver Fat in Humans,” published in the December 10, 2019 issue of JCI Insight (Journal of Clinical Investigation).

Mary Anne Ursick, executive administrative assistant, received a Staff Excellence Award.

She was named by The National Association for Educational Office Professionals to serve on the state level board of the Educational Office Professionals in Ohio.

Events Open House draws 100 for blessing, dedication of renovated library With the help of generous alumnae/i and friends, the College transformed the first floor of its Ralph M. Besse Library last summer into a welcoming Learning Commons. In this renovated space, students now have one-stop access to services ranging from academic advising and tutoring to IT support and, of course, library services. They have meeting spaces for working on collaborative projects, quiet study spaces, individual computer access, a full computer classroom, and a coffee station.

Justice Melody Stewart was Founder’s Day Speaker Ohio Supreme Court Justice and former Ursuline adjunct faculty member Melody J. Stewart shared reflections on the centennial of women’s suffrage as guest speaker at Founder’s Day on Nov. 22, 2019.

Stewart, the first African American woman to be elected to Ohio’s high court, is a graduate of Beaumont School and knows the Ursuline charism well. She talked about her career path and the workings of the Supreme Court, then answered questions from some 200 engaged audience members. Founder’s Day commemorates Mother Mary of the Annunciation Beaumont, who, in November 1871, signed the documents that established the College. The gathering is an annual donor appreciation event.

Suffrage centennial exhibition opening featured remarks by Mary Rose Oakar ’62 A century after women gained the right to vote, Ursuline College hosted a traveling exhibition celebrating that centennial. “Ohio Women Vote: 100 Years of Change” opened in November with a public reception that included remarks by former U.S. Rep. Mary Rose Oakar ’62.

One of Ursuline’s best known graduates, Oakar represented Ohio’s 20th District for eight terms, from 1976 until 1993. She spoke about the importance of voting and about her experience as an international elections monitor. Oakar regaled the audience with memories of her time in Congress, including when she introduced successful legislation to commemorate suffragist Susan B. Anthony on the $1 coin.

Ursuline’s Historic Preservation program Director Bari Oyler Stith, PhD, wrote a successful application to bring “Ohio Women Vote” to the College. Developed by the Ohio History Connection and made possible with generous support by Ohio Humanities, the exhibition comprised a series of panels examining the path taken by Ohio women to achieve the right to vote and exploring the history of civic action by a diverse spectrum of Ohio women throughout history. Students in Dr. Stith’s Material Culture class curated the panels along with garments from the College’s Historic Costume Study Collection.

Ursuline choir sang in Cleveland Orchestra Christmas Concert Our very own Ursuline Voices choir performed under the direction of Francisco Prado in two Christmas concerts along with other community choirs and the Cleveland Orchestra and Choruses in December. Surrounded by the festive Yuletide splendor of Severance Hall, the Ursuline Voices truly made a joyful noise!

Flying Arrows 5K: Ursuline College Scholarship Run Saturday, October 24, 2020 Lace up! Ursuline College will host its first community road race the morning of October 24. This event, which we hope will become annual, commemorates the Feast of St. Ursula on October 21.

The race route will start near the Sister Diana Stano Athletic Center and also end on campus. The 5k is chip-timed. All registrants will get an event t-shirt. And all 5k finishers will receive a finisher medal. Age group awards will be handed-out to the top three finishers. There will also be a one mile walk option. Cross Country: 2019 Championship Hosting The fall season saw the Ursuline Cross Country program chosen to host the 2019 Great Midwest Athletic Conference Championships at Laurel School’s Butler Campus.

Hosting a championship requires a huge commitment from the athletics staff, the cross country coaching staff, and the college community to help ensure a positive championship experience for the nearly 300 student athletes from 11 institutions that competed in late October.

Head Coach Alaric Best and his staff designed the championship course layout that was submitted to the conference over the summer for approval from the league’s coaches’ and conference office.

The day of the meet consisted of laying out the course, reviewing the course map with the teams, coaches, and officials to ensure accuracy, providing a hospitality room for coaches, working with the timing company to provide accurate results to each institution, along with many other details to help enhance the championship experience for the student-athletes.

Softball in the Swing Late last spring, the Ursuline softball team finished the season with upward momentum that saw them narrowly miss the conference tournament. Behind tremendous starting pitching from then-junior Brooklyn Miller, the Arrows won four of their last five games including back-to-back shutouts of Ohio Valley to close the season.

In games against Ohio Dominican and Ohio Valley in the final week, Miller took perfect games into the final inning and once to the final out. The perfect game consists of no hits, walks, or baserunners of any kind over the course of the game.

The Arrows finished with a program-best 18 wins and 13-13 overall in the G-MAC.

Protecting the most vulnerable Sister Anne Victory, HM, SJ ’69 caps a career of caring with a campaign against human trafficking

Sister Anne Victory, HM, SJC ’69 had the perfect excuse for not making it to the Alumnae Awards Reception last summer to accept her Amadeus Rappe Award: she was meeting with the Pope.

Sr. Anne was in Rome with Talitha Kum International, a group of Catholic Sisters from 92 countries on five continents who are fighting human trafficking. They gathered to set priorities for the next five years and present to Pope Francis.

“Basically what he said was ‘You go, girls,’” Sister Anne recalled when she came to campus in October to accept her award belatedly. (See page 30 for more on Sister Anne’s award nomination.)

Human Trafficking Wasn’t on her Radar Now the director of education for the Cleveland-based Collaborative to End Human Trafficking and the president of the board of U.S. Catholic Sisters Against Human Trafficking, Sister Anne says she wasn’t aware of the term “human trafficking” until 2006.

Her Saint John College degree was in nursing and she devoted 32 years of her life to the profession as a clinician, educator, nursing administrator, and vice president for mission at St. Joseph Hospital in Lorain, Ohio (now Mercy Health-Lorain).

After that, she served as a

member of the Leadership Team for her congregation, the Sisters of the Humility of Mary.

By 2007, Sister Anne had become aware of the term and the scope of human trafficking.

She and representatives from six other religious communities formed a task force to determine what they could do to help victims.

That seven-community task force has since evolved into the Collaborative to End Human Trafficking, a coalition of nearly 60 regional entities working on the problem. Sr. Anne was ready for a new challenge when the opportunity arose to work full time as the Collaborative’s education director.

Addressing the problem from multiple angles, the coalition includes groups as diverse as local police departments, the Cuyahoga County Division of Children and Family Services, the National Council of Jewish Women, the Ohio Hotel and Lodging Association, and the Ursuline College Women’s Center. Their poignant “happens here too” billboards throughout Northeast Ohio make this scourge impossible to ignore.

Human Rights Issue

So what is human trafficking?

In a powerful TEDx lecture Sister Anne gave in Youngstown in 2015, she explained.

“People are being bought and sold; they are being held against their will; they are being made to do things that they do not choose to do; and they cannot leave their situations.

That’s slavery. Recently we’ve been calling it by a different name, human trafficking,” she said.

Sister Anne says she now knows several people who are survivors of human trafficking.

“Every story is different but it’s always tragic.

Some of them are so resilient that they inspire me. They really have to work at the trauma every day.”

While the commercial sex trade is what many people associate with human trafficking, forced labor is the form of trafficking that touches all of us, she said. That’s because forced labor may be involved in production of the food we eat, the clothing we wear, the electronics we use, and the services we enjoy, notably at restaurants and nail salons. Once we recognize our own complicity, she said, we can try to reduce demand for forced labor.

Nursing Background a Plus

In a 2018 interview, journalist Tony Ganzer asked Sister Anne if her nursing background helps her to remain calm as she processes complex situations (faithfullpod.com/ 2-sisters-against-slavery). “Probably so.

I haven’t lost any of that,” Sister Anne responded. “We think about what’s the right approach with this hurting person.

It’s given me an opportunity to work with my colleagues in health care... We need to make sure that they really get it.”

As education director for the Collaborative to End Human Trafficking, Sister Anne wants to make sure that everyone “gets it.” She focuses on raising awareness across the community and educating health care and service professionals on protocols to identify victims and connect them to helpful resources.

“At least now when I go to give presentations, people have heard of this. When we first started, people had not a clue. So just the fact that people now know and are concerned and want to hear, that’s reward enough for me,” she told Ganzer.

developmental disabilities, heroin addiction, those struggling with HIVAIDS in the early days of that epidemic, as well as patients in Third World countries.

Dew delivered a moving tribute to Sister Anne at the Alumnae Awards dinner and repeated it at a small luncheon in her honor in October. She quoted a 2017 opinion piece that Sister Anne wrote for The Plain Dealer: “As the Bible tells us, ‘Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in your power to act,’ (Proverbs 3:27). As a person of faith, I believe in living our shared sacred honor to protect the most vulnerable.”

Dew continued, “From our perspective, Sister Anne has practiced this belief throughout her entire adult life. She has made outstanding contributions to our religion and profession, and her home and community. From our comfortable retirement, we are in awe of her drive to continue her mission, and so very pleased that her efforts are deemed to merit this year’s Amadeus Rappe Award.”

Art therapists can play a vital role in helping survivors of human trafficking heal, says Mary (Kohut) Kometiani ’08 MA, ATR-BC, LPCC. Her new book helps them do just that. Titled “Art Therapy Treatment with Sex Trafficking Survivors: Facilitating Empowerment, Recovery, and Hope,” the book explores art therapy interventions and outcomes through detailed case studies of sex trafficking survivors in the United States, India, and Nepal, and includes international recommendations for survivor treatment.

“For sex trafficked survivors, art therapy facilitates emotional catharsis, a personal sense of worth and empowerment through making choices; supports connection to others and the inner self; resolves trauma, grief, and shame; and provides hope for the future and recovery,” said Kometiani. One recipient has helped to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars to help teen mothers receive an education and meet some of their most basic needs.

Another was called, in her nursing career, to help women with Chemotherapy Related Cognitive Impairment (CRCI), commonly known as “chemo-brain.”

Another transformed her talent and love of art into a healing tool and taught generations of others to do the same. And one woman turned her life calling of service toward the fight against the modern-day slavery of human trafficking (see page 20).

Getting to know each of these women individually, the trait I saw in all four was an enormously grateful heart. All four of these women recognize that investing their time in others gives them a deep personal sense of reward and fulfillment.

Why do I share this? I am often asked what the difference is between an Ursuline education and that of other schools. I believe it is helping our students find their passion and apply that passion to the betterment of society and themselves. Empowering students is just as important today as it was in 1871 when the College was formed to educate women to be leaders in their community and lead fulfilling, successful lives, no matter their calling. This is happening in a very intentional way in our new CareerFIT office. As you’ll read on page 8, the College now makes personal assessment tools available to students – and alumnae/i – to help them recognize their strengths, develop their passions, and hear their calling.

All of our award recipients took their passion and compassion and turned those into careers as well as ways to be servant leaders in the world around them. Ursuline College continues to be committed to helping our students discover and develop their strengths and passions to lead purposeful, meaningful lives, not only for others but for their own health and wellbeing.

2019 Gonzaga Medal: Valerie Koch ’19 Last of the line not afraid to shine When Valerie Koch ’19 BSN, RN graduated in May 2019, she was the last of a line of Koch siblings to attend Ursuline, stretching back to 2007. She went out with a bang, receiving the Gonzaga Medal in recognition of her “personal qualities of refinement, dignity, integrity and sincere concern for others.”

The Gonzaga Medal was established by the Alumnae Association in 1972 to honor a graduating student.

The award is named for Sister M. Gonzaga Haessly, OSU, who had been with the College since 1922, serving as dean for 34 years (1932-1966) and dean emeritus until her death in 1969. Sister Gonzaga is remembered by alumnae as one who exemplified the true spirit of Ursuline College. She was a woman of faith who was also a scholar, teacher, administrator, and above all, a friend.

Koch graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree. Not one to ride on her siblings’ coattails, she served as the president and secretary of Student Nurses of Ursuline College (SNUC). As president, she created new initiatives to increase student involvement, helped organize Red Cross Blood Drives, and raised funds for the American Heart Association.

She mentored pre-nursing students, raised funds for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital as co-chair of Ursuline for St. Jude, volunteered with Campus Ministry, and welcomed new students as an Orientation Team Arrow.

While working as a nursing assistant on a malignant hematology/bone marrow transplant floor, Koch was inspired to organize a campus-wide bone marrow registry drive. She represented Ursuline as a member of the Ohio Student Nurses Association and the National Student Nurses Association, attending NSNA’s 2017 conference in San Diego and its 2019 conference in Salt Lake City. Her essay titled, “To the Patients that Remind Me Why I Started,” was published in “Imprint,” the magazine of the National Student Nurses’ Association. Valerie continues to be involved in her community as an active parishioner and volunteer of Ss. Robert & William Church.

Homecoming 2019 2019 brought the first Homecoming & Family weekend to Ursuline College for the alumni of both St. John College and Ursuline College. Some 200 people participated in the festivities on and off campus. As is tradition, the three alumnae awards were presented during the weekend at the Reunion & Award Dinner held at Landerhaven. The Athletic Department held a Friday tailgate for athletes and their parents as well as alums and their families. Saturday was the third annual Golden Years brunch for alumnae who graduated in 1969 or earlier. Two alumnae from the Class of 1949 were in attendance for their 70th reunion from Ursuline, former Alumnae Director Carmella ‘Carmi’ Consigilo Franz and Marguerite Fitzgerald Martin.

Forty-one alumnae from both Colleges attended their 50th reunion, made even sweeter with one of their own, Sr. Anne Victory, HM, as the 2019 recipient of the Amadeus Rappe Award.

The Alumnae Board prepared a lovely prayer service to celebrate the reunion classes and honor those alums who passed away since the last reunion. In a very moving ceremony, they read the name of each deceased alumna or alumnus and tied a ribbon with their name on it to a Memory Tree.

Crystal Award

Alumnae Board honors four grads with awards

The Crystal Award is given annually to a graduate of Ursuline College or St. John College who has demonstrated dedication to and support of the College and the Alumnae Association.

Rising Arrow Award The Rising Arrow Award recognizes an alumna/us who graduated within the past 10 years and has made outstanding contributions to her or his professional field, faith, and/or community. This year, we have two recipients.

Dr. Rosanne M. Casal ’11, ’18 DNP, APRN-BC, AOCNP was recognized for her outstanding work in hematology/oncology.

At University Hospitals, she was instrumental in developing an APRN-run acute care clinic for outpatient symptom management for patients with cancer and sickle cell disease. She instituted a quality improvement project for assessment of breast cancer patients for chemotherapy related cognitive impairment. Dr. Casal (pictured below with Suzanne Fortuna) is an APRN at University Hospitals Seidman Cancer Center as well as an assistant professor at Ursuline College.

Dionne C. Kane ’06 MMT was recognized for her values-based leadership at the Federal Defense Finance and Accounting Service, and her philanthropy. Dionne (pictured below left with Miesha Wilson Headen ’07 MA at right and Sister Christine) has led teams responsible for accounting for over $1 billion in expenses and received the coveted “Rock Star Award” from the DFAS. As co-chair of the fundraising committee for Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Greater Cleveland Alumnae Chapter, Dionne has also helped to raise more than $250,000 to fund scholarships for teenage girls in Cleveland Metropolitan School District schools.

The 2019 Crystal Award was given posthumously to Sr. Kathleen Burke ’62 SJC, OSU, PhD, ATR-BC, LPC, for founding Ursuline’s graduate Art Therapy program (now Counseling and Art Therapy) and for her dedicated service to the Ursuline~St. John College Alumnae Association. Sr. Kathleen served as chair of the Ursuline College Art Department from 1975-1986, and in 1986 co-founded the graduate Art Therapy program, one of the first of its kind in Ohio. She served as the director of the program until 1999, but remained a part-time faculty member until she retired in 2016.

Sr. Kathleen was also instrumental in the establishment of the Florence O’Donnell Wasmer Gallery, the creation of the Labyrinth on campus, and the implementation of the Ursuline Sisters’ Art Space programs.

Sr. Kathleen passed away on July 24, 2018.

Amadeus Rappe Award The Amadeus Rappe Award is given annually to a graduate of Ursuline or St. John College who has made an outstanding contribution to her/ his religion, home, community, and/ or profession. The award memorializes the first bishop of the Diocese of Cleveland, who summoned the Ursuline Sisters from France to Cleveland in 1850.

Jill Delaney Byrne ’84 RN, MSN, PhD  was named a HomeGrown Hero by The Plain Dealer in recognition of her patented design of a cooling vest to help surgeons stay cool in stressful situations.

Byrne was honored at a reception in November and demonstrated her vest and her innovative thinking to students in a class taught by Laura (Chrow) Goliat ’79 DNP. Kathy Sabbath Oravecz ‘84, a visual arts faculty member at Fairmount Center for the Arts, was the subject of a Q+A the Center posted on its Facebook page in December 2019. The article noted that Oravecz is a teacherin-residence at the Holden Arboretum, that her watercolors are in collections across the U.S. and the Netherlands, and that she wrote and

illustrated a children’s picture book, “The Frog and the Footbridge.”
