Loyal Grad: Mary Lou (Jackson) McCarthy `54 shows gratitude for a good education and lifelong friends

Mary Lou (Jackson) McCarthy ’54 found a true home when she came to our Ursuline College campus at the top of Cedar Hill. After attending four different high schools in four different states, McCarthy graduated from Cleveland’s former Lourdes Academy in the summer of 1950 and was preparing to attend Ohio University. That changed when she met up with a friend from St. Ann’s (now Communion of Saints) parish in Cleveland Heights and the friend invited her to join in the activities of a Catholic student group for Ursuline, John Carroll University, and Notre Dame College. At picnics, parties, and other gatherings, McCarthy met kindred spirits that summer and decided she wanted to attend Ursuline. “I called my father in the middle of a work day to ask his permission. Then I went in and talked with Sister M. Gonzaga Haessly. She said I could attend.” It was settled. McCarthy dove into the Ursuline College experience, making lifelong friends and gaining knowledge and wisdom that she appreciates more than six decades later.

“The Ursuline nuns inspired us to learn, gave us confidence to pursue our dreams, emphasized the importance of contributing to society.” She majored in biology, minored in chemistry and English, and wrote a social column in the student newspaper. She remembers the Step Up ceremony, when students progressed from freshman to sophomore. She remembers Sister Kilian Hufgard’s patience with her attempts at art projects. She remembers high standards in her science classes. “It was a great education. It was a great place to be. It was small. You got to be good friends with the people who were there, and the nuns were wonderful,” McCarthy said.

After graduation, she held positions of increasing responsibility in histology laboratories at Cleveland Clinic, City Hospital (now MetroHealth), and Rand Development. “It was interesting work. I liked it. There were only a couple of us in Cleveland that did tissue culture,” McCarthy said. Her Ursuline education had prepared her well for that career and for the community involvement in her future. McCarthy and her late husband, Cleveland attorney John “Jack” McCarthy, raised three active children. She remained involved in the community over the years, joining the Christ Child Society, running fundraising fashion shows for Great Lakes Theater Festival, tutoring developmentally delayed children at Wooster and Saint Joseph schools, sponsoring the Naples fashion show benefiting Ursuline’s fashion program, serving on the College’s Alumnae Board, and honing her skills at golf, a game she continues to enjoy. McCarthy’s strong belief in giving back to the College is grounded in the idea that the Ursuline sisters dedicated themselves to teaching the students. “The Ursuline nuns inspired us to learn, gave us confidence to pursue our dreams, emphasized the importance of contributing to society, and were a tremendous example of living a life of principle, dignity and dedication,” she said. “These women and other benefactors brought us from the houses at the top of Cedar Hill to this beautiful campus and we should appreciate it.” Asked why she has so faithfully supported her alma mater over the decades McCarthy responded, “I feel that you owe that to the school. We’re supposed to give back. I love the college. I appreciate all they did for me and I want other students to be able to benefit from this wonderful school.” 1

New Supporter Glenmede director enthused about Ursuline’s leadership, educational mission Impressed with the leadership and mission of Ursuline College, Linda M. Olejko, CFP®, CEPA, recently progressed from sponsor to trustee. Olejko is a Business Development Director in the Ohio office of wealth management firm Glenmede, a new supporter of the College. At Glenmede, she is responsible for cultivating relationships with endowments, foundations, tax-exempt entities, and families. Olejko was recognized as one of Crain’s Cleveland Business’ Most Influential Women in Finance 2017. We welcomed her to the Board of Trustees with a few questions.

You attended Ursuline’s 2018 Women Who Light the Way event at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame honoring the late Cokie Roberts. What drew you to that event and did it pique your interest in Ursuline College? “I went to the event primarily because of Cokie Roberts and I brought some people from our office. That evening, I met Sister Christine, who I thought was just amazing. She’s a very positive person and certainly very committed to helping young women move forward. I was really impressed with her. I like what the College is doing.”

Why do you look forward to serving on the Board of

“You can’t move up or move ahead if you don’t have a good quality education, and a lot of young women don’t have those opportunities available to them. I think Ursuline gives students opportunities. There’s too much of a divide between the haves and the have-nots right now in this country and the only way you can pull yourself up is if you have access to an education that can put you into a position where you can earn a living. I believe in the dignity of work. Ursuline is a good option for young women in the Cleveland area.”

One of the things I believe in pretty strongly is giving people – particularly young women and girls – an opportunity.

Trustees? Is this service in line with other community involvement you have had or other strong convictions of yours? “Most of my community involvement has been with arts organizations. And while I really enjoy the arts and will continue to support them, I think my board involvement needed to be revamped, focusing on things that are important to me in trying to make a difference. One of the things I believe in pretty strongly is giving people – particularly young women and girls – an opportunity.

Why is Ursuline College a good fit for Glenmede? “We like to support organizations in the community that our clients are engaged in and organizations where our employees serve on boards. Our clients have interests in education, the arts, health, and human services so those are some of the things we try to support. “Having community members get to know us as a good corporate citizen is good for us and it encourages people from our firm to be involved in the community. It’s a longterm investment you make when you’re engaged in the community. We’re pretty careful about the organizations we support; I’m happy that Ursuline is one of them.”

Decades-long Partnership: John Huntington Fund for Education supports nursing students, regional economy As long-term relationships go, this one has been especially faithful and rewarding. Over the course of decades, Cleveland-based John Huntington Fund for Education has provided millions of dollars in scholarship support for Ursuline College’s nursing students. And Ursuline, in return, has educated thousands of skilled and compassionate nurses, most of whom have pursued their careers in Northeast Ohio. Anna Adams, treasurer of the Huntington Fund, explained why the relationship works. The story starts in the 1850s when John Huntington (pictured) emigrated from England to the United States. He amassed great wealth in the oil refinery business and was very philanthropic in his lifetime. “He had a strong belief that education is the foundation upon which a strong and economically stable community is built,” Adams said. Through his will and trust, a polytechnic institute was established to promote scientific and technical education, especially for immigrants. That school closed when it was determined that students could be better served by many of the region’s existing colleges. Out of its closure grew the John Huntington Fund for Education, which provides scholarships to institutions in Cuyahoga County for students living in the county to be able to pursue a scientific, technical, or vocational education.

“Statistics show fewer than 50% of students educated in Northeast Ohio stay here after graduation. I think Ursuline continues to be very successful at keeping a lot of its graduates here, which in turn helps us fill needed positions and grow our overall economy here in Cleveland. So it’s been a great fit,” Adams added. “For job creation and job preparation, which are key components both for the economy and for our Fund, Ursuline seems to really fit that role very well. We have common missions in mind, common beliefs and vision, so it makes for a good team.” Truly, a match made in Cleveland.

“Ursuline fits that role very well, especially because it is educating students who are very much sought after for nursing positions in Northeast Ohio, where a nursing shortage continues to grow,” Adams said. “And Ursuline has had a very high success rate, with 100% percent employment post licensure.” Also important to Huntington – and to the Fund that bears his name – was retaining college graduates in Northeast Ohio. Brain gain, as a trend, is always preferable to brain drain.

Highlights of 2018-2019:

Gift from alumna funds new Women’s Center Katherine A. (Lockwood) Allen `55 made a generous gift to fund the new Women’s Center at Ursuline over the next several years. The center opened in Ursuline’s Bishop Anthony M. Pilla Student Learning Center in the fall of 2018 to provide both academic and practical support to students. In its first year, the Women’s Center sponsored

speakers and workshops on campus and brought students to valuable conferences in the community. Above, the Women’s Center also co-sponsored with the Florence O’Donnell Wasmer Gallery “Unity, Empowerment, and Change: A Women’s History Month Student Art Showcase,” that drew near-record-breaking attendance.

Nursing dean, grads recognized by the American Academy of Nursing Three nurse leaders who graduated from Ursuline College were inducted as 2019 fellows of the American Academy of Nursing, one of the highest honors for nursing internationally, in recognition of their extraordinary commitment to the promotion of public health. Honored (and pictured above, from left) were Patricia A. Sharpnack DNP, RN, CNE, NEA-BC, ANEF, dean of Ursuline’s Breen School of Nursing (Class of 1984); Beth Faiman, PhD, CNP, nurse practitioner in the Cleveland Clinic’s Department of Hematologic Oncology and Blood Disorders ( Class of 1996); and 4

K. Kelly Hancock, DNP, RN, NE-BC, executive chief nursing officer, Cleveland Clinic Health System and chief nursing officer, Cleveland Clinic Main Campus (Class of 1994). The Academy comprises more than 2,600 nurse leaders in education, management, practice, policy, and research. A committee of previously elected fellows reviewed hundreds of applications, selecting new fellows based on “their impressive contributions to increase access, reduce cost, and improve quality through nursing theory, practice, and science.”

Local high school students say yes and amen to scholarships The College has committed to awarding full scholarships to 11 high school graduates through two different programs initiated in 2019. Six graduates of Cleveland area Catholic schools will receive Say Amen to College Scholarships starting fall 2020. The schools are Villa Angela-St. Joseph High School, Beaumont School, Saint Joseph Academy, Cleveland Central Catholic High School, Saint Martin de Porres High School, and Trinity High School. This echoes Ursuline’s pledge earlier in the year to the Say Yes to Education Compact, through which the College provided five Cleveland Metropolitan School District graduates full scholarships starting fall 2019. Both Say Yes and Say Amen cover tuition for up to four years of full-time attendance. YWCA Greater Cleveland and Ursuline launch leadership certificate

YWCA Greater Cleveland and Ursuline College now offer a joint leadership certification to professional women looking to further develop their careers. Participants of YWCA’s Momentum leadership development program can earn up to three credits and then enroll in two

additional courses at Ursuline to earn the YWCA Ursuline Leadership Certification. Participants will also be eligible for a Momentum Scholarship providing a 33% tuition reduction for any graduate or certificate program at Ursuline.

Associate professor honored as a Notable Woman in Education Mary Beth Zeni, ScD, MSN, RN, associate professor of nursing at the graduate level, was honored by Crain’s Cleveland Business as a Notable Woman in Education thanks to her innovative and successful curriculum development strategies. Zeni has responded to student requests by developing hybrid teaching methods that combine classroom and online instruction. Her innovations help keep adult learners at Ursuline engaged in order to excel in their careers. Additionally, Zeni uses her decades of experience in analyzing population health data as a member of the Cuyahoga County Board of Health Opioid Taskforce and the Ohio Injury Prevention Partnership’s Prescription Drug Abuse Action Group of the Ohio Department of Health.

Ursuline College’s financial outlook remains strong. During Fiscal Year 2018-2019, our students generated approximately 86% of all revenue for the College from tuition, fees, and room and board (auxiliary enterprises). Our alumnae/i and other benefactors contributed donations to the Annual Fund that superseded the expected $850,000. In fact, for the second consecutive year, over $1 million was contributed, hitting the $1,456,670 mark. Those gifts and grants, combined with investment income, accounted for 10% of the College’s revenue while other income added 4%. In the true tradition of Ursuline College, 80% of all expenses are directly spent on our students through instruction, student services, and academic support services. Fund raising and management and general expenses (15%) remain below industry standards, signaling continued good stewardship. Auxiliary services, which is mainly the room and board for our students, round out the expenses with 5% of the total. The balance sheet also reflects Ursuline’s solid financial position. The endowment fund continues to grow and ended the year with its highest market value ever of $45,940,500. The outstanding debt of the College is less than $3,000,000 and the college ended the year with total assets of $95,114,100. Many thanks to the members of the investment, finance, and development committees of the Board of Trustees for their ongoing stewardship and dedication to the college.
