Dear Friends, We tell our students—some of you recall firsthand!—that an Ursuline College education builds a foundation for lifelong learning. In every profession, a liberal arts curriculum teaches thinking, reflecting, and critical inquiry to guide and enrich lives long past graduation.

Nothing could have tried that promise more than this past year. The COVID-19 pandemic has put all our resources to the test. Many have learned lessons of loss, pain, and, we hope, resilience that stretch far beyond the classroom walls.

Of course, Ursuline College is no stranger to life’s challenging lessons. A century ago, we withstood the 1918 pandemic with the same fortitude that marked our response to COVID-19. You can appreciate the massive effort we mounted, an immediate shift to remote instruction in spring, a summer of thorough planning before opening for blended learning in fall, and, just before Thanksgiving, a pivot to largely remote instruction but with library, labs, residence halls, and fitness center open while students completed their classes and field experiences.

Throughout it all, supported by your generosity and the dedication of a remarkable faculty and staff, the work of Ursuline education continues, as these pages attest. Since the 2019-20 year began, we have dedicated a new learning commons in Besse Library, revitalized career services, and inaugurated our Institute for Women, Wellness and Work, offering for-credit and non-credit programming to meet the needs of women in their personal and professional lives. We’ve completed dozens of campus renovation projects, including the Saint Angela Garden in front of the Monsignor Mullen Building (see page 31) and a brand new Exercise Science laboratory (see page 8).

While we had to postpone the celebration of our second “Women Who Light the Way” in March 2020, just after the pandemic took hold, our honoree, Sr. Helen Prejean, CSJ, was undaunted and graced us with a dynamic virtual presentation in November instead.

We are undaunted too. Your own generous donations have been supplemented by federal funding from the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act, which has offset some of our many COVID-related expenses. Amid PPE supplies, enhanced cleaning, upgraded technology, and surveillance testing, the safety of students, faculty, and staff remains our highest priority.

Ursuline, like every college, faces uncertainty as the pandemic continues.

Yet in the midst of it, one sign that our unswerving commitment to students will prevail came in the form of a study reported by Forbes magazine in July 2020, ranking Ursuline the #1 college nationally for student upward mobility (see page 8). Our efforts to provide quality, accessible education are indeed transforming lives.

Alumni from three decades, three states helped push Giving Day over the top As public broadcasting fans know, there’s nothing like a challenge grant to make the fund-drive phones ring.

Supporters are often happy to do their part and help “unlock” an amount that is offered by generous donors but must be matched with other donations.

Last spring, four alumni – from three different decades and three different states – banded together to create a challenge grant that helped the College reach its fundraising goal on our online giving day, #UrsulineCollegeGives.

Donte’ and Me’Chelle Hayes (a married couple both from the Class of 2012), Christine Stevens ’91, and Audrone (Gelazis) Messick ’62 had never met, but together these four grads made a big difference for the College they all love.

We asked each what motivates them to support their alma mater.

Donte’ Hayes ’12 and Me’Chelle Hayes ’12 “We give back to Ursuline for a few reasons. First, Ursuline provided us with a quality education that enabled us to grow both personally and professionally.

Second, without the scholarship assistance provided to the both of us we are certain that we would not have been able to attend college without a much larger amount of debt. We find it important to do our small part to help provide similar opportunities to current and future Ursuline College attendees,” the couple said.

Asked what they value most from their Ursuline experiences, Me’Chelle said, “In hindsight, after attending another higher education institution, I appreciate the Christian values that UC has built its foundation upon.” And Donté replied, “As a ‘non-traditional’ major at Ursuline, what I valued most was that I received a quality education that prepared me for my professional career.”

Christine Stevens ’91 “I believe it is my responsibility to help Ursuline College continue to provide future students with the same excellent education I received,” said Stevens. “Encouraging people interested in attending college to explore Ursuline is one way I have tried to share with others the benefits offered by an Ursuline education.

The other way I support the college is through annual giving. An Ursuline education is well worth the sacrifice of time, energy and the financial challenge.”

Stevens called her Ursuline experience “transformative.”

“I was in my mid-30s, married with three children when I decided to pursue my dream of becoming a nurse. With the support and encouragement of my husband I began to explore my options.

My experience at Ursuline was one of inclusion, all students were treated equally well regardless of their age, previous life experiences or background. The college provided a very well-integrated environment where all students were respected, challenged to explore viewpoints that may differ from their world view, encouraged to find their voice and given the education that would serve as a conduit to their future. My experience at Ursuline College included not only obtaining an excellent foundation for my nursing career but also gave me the tools to become a life-long learner.”

Audrone (“Audrey”) Gelazis Messick ’62 Messick says her Ursuline experience was “a very important part of my life.”

Her family had emigrated from Lithuania. “Having a college education was something my father wished for us and we were able to do it in America.”

Messick’s sisters, Amanda Muliolis ’60 and Kristina Gelazis ’64 also graduated from Ursuline.

“Money was tight, but it was something that, within our family structure, that we all were trying to reach.”

“Educating a human mind is what I value. I received a bachelor of arts (degree) in chemistry, and the art part required me to take courses like philosophy and religion and logic. Lately, logic has been playing a big role in my thinking. The religious studies were very good too because they imprinted ideas of how our soul works and how our intellect works. I enjoy thinking about those quality issues.”

Equally important, she added, “The way the nuns treated us always made us feel like better people. I have wonderful memories of the teachers and the quality of the instruction. I’m truly very grateful, and proud too, that we were able to do it. I know I will always make a point to be a contributor.”

What’s my calling?

Grant funds promotion of vocational exploration Vocation, calling, a sense of purpose or meaning in life… these can be heady, even intimidating concepts for undergraduates. Thanks to a three-year grant from the Council for Independent Colleges (CIC), Ursuline faculty and staff are devising several creative ways to open dialog with students and encourage them to explore ideas of vocation.

Through its Network for Vocation in Undergraduate Education, CIC awarded Ursuline a “Vocation Across the Academy” grant to promote the intellectual and theological exploration of vocation in the liberal arts and applied professional fields.

“This grant has already helped faculty and staff take a more interconnected approach to guiding students in their individual vocational exploration as part of the undergraduate experience,” said Kathryn LaFontana, PhD, Vice President for Academic Affairs. Activities in the first year of the grant included: • enhancement to the core courses • the pilot of a new career coaching program • faculty stipends for developing curriculum • and the beginning of a larger conversation about embedding mentoring and advising in the undergraduate experience Career Coaching in the Core The College has partnered with an outside firm, Future Plans, to offer students a variety of resources to support self-reflection about their career options and to connect them to coaches with real-world experience.

All first-year students are required to take UC-101 First Year Seminar, which has been modified to include an assessment that students take to highlight their aptitudes, interests, and values. After taking the assessment, they meet one-on-one with a career counselor who helps them understand the results, explore potential career matches, and map out an educational plan to get there, including taking new online modules to earn professional skills certifications.

“This model helps students early in their academic career to discern the strengths they bring to the table and to root their academic experience in their personal values and sense of calling,” LaFontana said.

In the 2019-2020 academic year, this “Career Fit” pilot provided assessment, coaching and certification to 160 students.

Building capacity for reflection The “Vocation Across the Academy” grant also provided stipends that enabled faculty to develop these four new initiatives: 1. A collaboration between the English Department and the Ralph M. Besse Library to improve the teaching of research processes to first-year students.

2. A new, one-day TeamSTEPPS® (Team Strategies and Tools to Enhance Performance and Patient Safety) workshop that will provide interprofessional education to bachelor’s degree students in Ursuline’s Breen School of Nursing and Health Professions alongside associate’s degree students from Lakeland Community College. Together they will practice skills in teamwork, communication, leadership, and mutual support – all skills they will need in their health care careers.

3. Another new, one-day TeamSTEPPS® workshop involving Ursuline nursing students and medical students from Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine. Together they will engage in case studies, role playing, and interpreting patient video scenarios, again to gain collaborative skills.

4. A public health course for undergraduates introducing them to population health concepts and incorporating key aspects of Catholic identity in higher education, such as advocating for social justice and exploring leadership strategies to promote a transformation in our society.

Lynn Hunnicutt, assistant director of the Network for Vocation in Undergraduate Education, congratulated LaFontana on Ursuline’s success, saying, “Your project has supported a number of activities, focused around career services, curricular enhancements, and workshops for faculty... the curricular work the grant funds supported appears to have great potential to build student capacity for reflection.”

The idea of building student capacity for reflection appealed to long-time Board of Trustees member George Goudreau, whose generous donation helped the College meet the CIC match.

“When I was growing up, I was fortunate to have exposure to many professions,” Goudreau said. “I appreciate seeing Ursuline students challenged to explore a variety of career possibilities and develop leadership capabilities. Their educational experiences are greatly enriched by these programs.”

Ursuline College Historic Preservation graduate student and adjunct faculty member Gail Peabody and undergraduate Jared Hyams measured and photographed the 1899 Cleveland and Eastern Railway, Chagrin River Bridge in Gates Mills in March 2020 (before the stay-at-home order went into effect) as part of her application to have the bridge included on the Historic American Engineering Record and the National Register of Historic Places.

Emergency fund ensures that minor catastrophes won’t derail education Imagine you are a commuter student in your senior year at Ursuline. You are balancing your studies, a part-time or perhaps full-time job, and family responsibilities. Graduation is in sight when one day you learn that your car won’t budge without a $500 repair. You don’t have the $500.

It’s a catastrophe for you as a student, but a relatively minor expense, given the overall investment in your college education.

Thanks to generous alumni and friends of Ursuline College, hope is in sight. These compassionate supporters last year donated to the Student Emergency Fund.

Established by The Division of Student Affairs and the Women’s Center, this safety net comes with strict guidelines to prevent misuse. “The funds are intended to assist students whose unexpected financial emergencies threaten their ability to stay in school,” explained Amy Lechko, Associate Dean of Student Affairs and Co-Director of the Women’s Center.

The Murphy Family Foundation made a gift to the Student Emergency Fund.

Foundation President Melody Murphy Thomas commented, “The Murphy Family Foundation is pleased to support the important work that Ursuline College is doing. We are grateful to be able to help Ursuline provide individual student support as needed and especially during these challenging times.”

Another donor to the fund is Board member Janet Miller. During a Board and student gathering (before the pandemic), Miller was touched by students’ stories of obstacles to completing their education. “I thought the concept of helping a student now to complete her education and add her skills to the community was important.

Who knows what will one day get paid forward.”

Most American colleges are now offering an emergency aid program, Lechko noted, and most have found this to be a useful tool in retaining students who experience financial hardship due to an unexpected emergency situation.

The market value of the College’s Investment Portfolio, which includes the endowment plus board-designated investment funds, was $46,709,816 on June 30, 2020.

Our alumnae/i and other benefactors contributed $1,037,835 to the Annual Fund, topping $1 million for the third consecutive year. An additional $2.6 million was contributed to restricted funds for specific purposes. Those gifts and grants, combined with investment income, accounted for 10% of the College’s revenue while “other income” added 4%.

Again this year, our students generated more than 80% of all revenue for the College in the form of tuition, fees and room and board (auxiliary enterprises).

The 2019-2020 fiscal year saw strong investment performance, generous philanthropy, shrinking of the College’s debt, and growth in the value of total assets. But, as happened at colleges across the country, those gains were offset somewhat by unforeseen and spiraling expenses related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

On the other side of the balance sheet, 80% of all expenses are spent on our students through instruction, student services, and academic support services.

Fund raising and management and general expenses (14%) remain below industry standards, indicating continued good stewardship. Auxiliary services – mainly the room and board for our students – round out the expenses at 6% of the total.

The outstanding debt of the College is less than $1,750,000 and the college ended the year with total assets of $95,669,215.

Many thanks to our many contributors and to the members of the investment, finance, and development committees of the Board of Trustees for their ongoing stewardship and dedication to the college.

Exercise Science lab outfitted, program launched Among the most ambitious improvement projects completed in summer 2020 was the renovation of a room in the Dauby Science Building into a fully equipped exercise laboratory in time for the fall 2020 launch of a new Exercise Science bachelor’s degree program.

Exercise Science combines basic science (including biology, anatomy, and physiology) with an exploration of human movement and its importance to overall health. Careers can include working in a corporate wellness program, serving as a conditioning coach, certified personal trainer, or athletic trainer.

Ursuline ranked #1 nationally for student mobility A national study on upward mobility of college graduates ranked Ursuline College # 1 for its record of moving low-income students into higher income groups. Titled “Winners and Losers: Universities and the Pursuit of the American Dream,” this research paper published by the American Enterprise Institute looks at data including earnings after graduation and college spending per student from 1,100 four-year institutions.

The authors calculated the percentage of students from low-income households who after graduation entered the upper middle class or better and found that Ursuline beats the odds of demographics, resources, and geography better than any of the other colleges studied. The authors cite Ursuline’s nursing program, “which likely helps students achieve high returns in the labor market.”

Ursuline College President Sister Christine De Vinne, OSU, PhD, said, “Ursuline College is committed to keeping quality education accessible. We have a long tradition of welcoming students who are the first in their family to attend college and providing them with the supports they need to succeed and thrive here, regardless of their major.”

“The content applies to simple life dilemmas and major physical feats alike,” said Assistant Professor G. Scott Willis, DHSc, NASM-PES, NASE-CSS. “For students interested in fitness and performance enhancement, Exercise Science will lead to a greater understanding of how the body moves and how to maximize its success.”

To accommodate the new major, the College invested in state-of-the-art equipment including several cycle ergometers and two unique treadmills with extraordinary upgrades; a non-invasive body composition analyzer used by professional sports organizations; a strength training/rehabilitation system capable of measuring force throughout a range of motion; and portable units allowing classes to examine sport-specific tasks remotely.

Nursing dean chosen for national award The dean of Ursuline’s Breen School of Nursing and Health Professions was selected in May to receive one of the highest awards from the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN).

Patricia A. Sharpnack, DNP, RN, CNE, NEA-BC, ANEF, FAAN, will receive the Elaine Ellibee Award, designated for a current or recent president of a state board of nursing who has demonstrated leadership as a state board president and leadership in making significant contributions to the NCSBN. She was selected from a pool of nominees from all 50 states, Washington D.C. and international boards. She will receive the award at a NCSBN meeting in March 2021.

Dr. Sharpnack was appointed to the Ohio Board of Nursing by Gov. John Kasich in 2014 and is now serving a second appointed term.

$450,000 federal grant will equip future advanced practice nurses to treat opioid addiction A $450,000 federal grant will enable advanced practice registered nurses who graduate from Ursuline’s master’s and post-master’s programs to administer medication-assisted treatment for patients with substance use disorder.

The award from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration is shared by Ursuline’s Graduate Nursing Program and the University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy and enables faculty to integrate medication assisted treatment into the graduate nursing curriculum in response to the opioid epidemic.

Associate Professor Mary Beth Zeni, RN, ScD, is principle investigator. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration is an agency of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

College honors Sister Helen Prejean with Women Who Light the Way award Eight months later than planned, Ursuline College honored author and social justice activist Sister Helen Prejean, CSJ, with its Women Who Light the Way award in a virtual event on Founder’s Day. Originally planned for the end of March at Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse, the event was postponed due to the pandemic. Sister Helen received the award and spoke to guests via Zoom on Nov. 17, the 149th anniversary of the College’s founding by Mother Mary of the Annunciation Beaumont in 1871.

Traditionally, the College hosts a donor appreciation event in celebration of Founder’s Day. “Even with her busy schedule, Sister Helen generously accommodated our time frame and she was certainly worth the wait,” said Richard Konisiewicz, Vice President for Institutional Advancement. “Our supporters loved hearing about her spiritual journey. Her witness of faith, and her honesty, grit, determination, and humor all came through, despite the distance.”

Based in New Orleans, Sister Helen rose to international prominence with the publication of her 1994 book, “Dead Man Walking: An Eyewitness Account of the Death Penalty in the United States,” which was made into an Academy Award winning movie starring Susan Sarandon and Sean Penn (1996). A tireless advocate for human dignity, she last year published a book, “River of Fire: My Spiritual Journey.”

As part of the Founder’s Day event, Crain’s Cleveland Business Editor Elizabeth McIntyre interviewed Sister Helen live. McIntyre is a new member of the Ursuline College Board of Trustees. Master of Ceremonies for the event was Sheronda Peterson ’10, Alumnae Board President, who is an I.T. Associate Project Manager at Progressive.

Ursuline’s Women Who Light the Way award recognizes women who have risen to leadership roles in their field and inspired future generations of women. This biennial award was first presented to the late journalist and author Cokie Roberts in 2018.

RPM International values Ursuline’s educational mission With 14,600 employees worldwide, Medina, Ohiobased RPM International is a company that focuses on attracting and retaining capable, engaged employees.

It is not surprising, then, that Ursuline’s focus on vocation and career readiness was compelling to RPM’s Randell McShepard.

McShepard is Vice President – Public Affairs and Chief Talent Officer for the multinational producer of specialty coatings, sealants, and building materials.

He was pleased to learn about the College’s focus on vocation and approved funding to help Ursuline meet a vocation challenge grant. (see page 4) McShepard explains why he appreciates the partnership.

RPM must receive many requests for philanthropic support. What is it about the Ursuline College mission that aligns with RPM’s giving priorities?

Education is number one among RPM’s corporate giving priorities. Coupled with that, we are a valuesdriven company that cares a lot about the development of young people who will ultimately take on leadership roles not only in our industry but in society… The values taught at Ursuline are in line with our sense of corporate social responsibility.

RPM’s most recent grant helped Ursuline match a challenge grant in support of vocation and career exploration. Did the idea of promoting career exploration resonate with you at RPM?

One of the great things about college is that you do get to see where you are strong and you are able to experiment and chart a course. That’s why initiatives like this are so important to us. It unleashes a pretty exciting energy and clarifies how they should direct their studies and spend their time moving forward.

Why is Ursuline College a good fit for RPM? The administration is doing a good job of re-affirming what the college stands for, including Catholic social teaching, and that makes it a worthy investment. I’ve talked to a number of Ursuline graduates and learned how they got their lives on track because of Ursuline.

Meeting people where they are, as Ursuline does, is a special thing. You transform lives and your graduates thrive! We need more Ursuline Colleges out there to help our entire region thrive.

Accordingly, Ursuline College prohibits harassment and discrimination on the basis of certain characteristics, including race, color, national origin, religion, age, ancestry, sex, pregnancy, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, disability, genetic information, military or veteran status, or any other basis prohibited by federal, state, or local laws. These characteristics are also referred to as a person’s “Protected Status” or “Protected Class.” The College does not tolerate conduct that violates this policy and makes 32

every effort to maintain a work and academic environment free from unlawful harassment and discrimination. The College responds to harassment and discrimination complaints with measures designed to immediately stop and eliminate the prohibited conduct, prevent the recurrence of the prohibited conduct, and remediate any adverse effects of such conduct on campus or in College-related programs or activities. Thus, all forms of prohibited conduct under this policy are considered serious offenses, and violations will result in discipline, up to and including possible suspension, expulsion, dismissal, termination, or removal and exclusion from the College.
