• For our new Global Perspectives speaker series we hosted Olympic silver medalist Nia Ali and the former CEO of Catholic Relief Services Carolyn Woo, two leaders whose very different lives both provided inspiration. These two speakers were featured in the Fall 2018 issue of Voices magazine.

• On a more local level, our new Stars Among Us series brought accomplished women of Northeast Ohio to campus to share their insights with student leaders (please see page 7).

The 2017-2018 fiscal year was the first under a new three-year strategic plan, “Leading a Legacy.”

This plan re-affirms our focus on educating women, commits us to bold new marketing, spurs a comprehensive review of academic programs, and calls for improving retention and graduation rates.

Faculty and staff members had a busy year implementing all four priority areas, most visibly by launching the following new events to promote women’s leadership.

• We presented our new Women Who Light the Way award to Cokie Roberts, honoring her 40 years in journalism and six New York Times bestsellers, most of which celebrate unsung contributions of women in U.S. history. With lead sponsorship from KeyBank 2

In this report you will read about generous grants from Lubrizol Corporation (page 4) and the Elisabeth Severance Prentiss Foundation (page 5) that enabled us to make upgrades in our chemistry and biology departments. We also shine a spotlight on long-time supporter and alumna Katherine A. (Lockwood) Allen ’55 (page 3).

Grateful for Dignified Educators: Katherine (Lockwood) Allen ’55 provides generous support In 1951, Katherine (Lockwood) Allen ’55 was one of only four girls from her high school graduating class to go on to attend college.

I took away from Ursuline was that it was our duty to live, as best we could, an exemplary life. And that’s guided me my whole life.”

Allen graduated with a bachelor’s degree in English in 1955 and raised seven children with her husband, Joseph V. Allen. She earned a master’s degree in library science, served as a high school media specialist for a decade, and later earned her law degree at Cleveland Marshall College of Law in 1991.

“My daughter could not believe that out of my class of 88 at St. Joseph Academy, 10 of us went on to higher education.

Six went to nursing school and four went to college. The others went to work or they got married shortly after high school,” she said.

True to her Ursuline College roots, after moving to Florida with her husband in 1996, Allen volunteered for 15 years as a guardian ad litem for Broward County, Florida children who were under the supervision of the state because of neglect, abuse, or abandonment.

Allen knows she was fortunate to have the enriching experience of attending Ursuline College and she has shown her appreciation by supporting the College consistently and generously in the years since.

“Ursuline College educated me to be an active citizen and member of my community, well prepared for my family and career responsibilities,” she said.

“I believe you should be loyal to your school and support your school in whatever way you can, time or money.”

Allen encourages other graduates to join her in showing gratitude to the College.

Committed to making donations that help cover Ursuline’s general operating expenses, Allen also gave to the rebuilding campaign after the 2013 tornado.

“The teachers I had were outstanding. Not only did they teach the curriculum, they handled themselves in such a dignified way. I really benefitted from their wisdom and example,” Allen said. “They were truly devoted to educating the girls. Not only did they educate you for your profession, which in those days was teaching or social work, but they taught us how to live, how to be compassionate people recognizing Christ in our fellow man. One of the biggest lessons

“I believe you should be loyal to your school and support your school in whatever way you can, time or money. After all, they gave you more than what the tuition could possibly cover. I received a liberal arts education and it has served me so well, my whole life. I really value it and I’m so grateful for it,” Allen said.

The Lubrizol Foundation: Promoting Scientific Discovery and STEM Education The Lubrizol Foundation continued its support of Ursuline College with two grants that made possible the purchase of a nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer (NMR) for the Chemistry Department.

“We are extremely grateful to the Lubrizol Foundation for providing the funds to purchase an NMR,” said Chemistry Department Chair Sarah Courtier Preston, PhD. “We are committed to providing students with learning experiences that are applicable to their future work in graduate school or the professional world.

Thanks to the Lubrizol Foundation, our students get to have hands-on experience with the foremost instrument for elucidating structures in organic chemistry. It gives more information than any other single analytical tool.”

Preston said most chemistry students in the U.S. don’t have access to an NMR at the undergraduate level unless they do research.

“Providing undergraduate students with access 4

to an NMR in the teaching lab sets us apart,” she said. And with small class sizes, students will receive plenty of individualized instruction in its proper use.

When students synthesize a compound in the organic chemistry teaching and research labs, Preston explained, they conduct a series of physical and chemical tests. With the NMR, they have an important means of testing their products as well as unknown compounds.

In fact NMR results are essential for verifying organic chemistry research results, she said.

And while Ursuline is not primarily a research institution, faculty across disciplines strongly encourage students to participate in research, which is showcased in a symposium on campus every spring.

At future symposia, watch for chemistry projects that involve the nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer in analysis.

New Look, New Tech: Elisabeth Severance Prentiss Foundation Grant Enables Biology Lab Renovation One may think the content of anatomy and physiology courses taken by first- and second-year undergraduates hasn’t changed much in a hundred years.

What has changed is the way the content is presented.

Today’s college students have access to technologies which, a generation ago, were just becoming available to researchers in the natural sciences. Electronic white boards and LED projectors have replaced blackboards, overhead projectors and transparencies.

Textbooks, lessons, and even examinations can be found anywhere there is a computer or personal computing device (phone!) and a WiFi connection.

Students and faculty can even explore the wonders of the human body, virtually, without access to cadavers or preserved specimens.

It is because of these endless possibilities that Biology Department faculty members are so delighted with the recent upgrades made possible by generous grant funding from the Elisabeth Severance Prentiss Foundation. In recent months, Prentiss Foundation

funding enabled a complete renovation of the anatomy teaching lab, preparation lab, and office suite.

“We are very grateful to the Elisabeth Severance Prentiss Foundation for generously supporting this much-needed renovation in our Biology Department,” said Ursuline College President Sister Christine De Vinne, OSU, PhD. “Consistent with the Prentiss Foundation’s commitment to healthcare in Northeast Ohio, students in our Breen School of Nursing are benefitting tremendously from this modern learning environment.”

Biology Department Chair Mark A. Kyle, PhD, shares that gratitude. “We are now able to use educational technologies, including the latest audiovisual and computer-based learning applications, in a modern and efficient setting that is comfortable for both students and instructors,” he said.

Equally important, Kyle noted, the renovation improved the physical surroundings significantly. New furniture and seating are designed to optimize comfort and access for the students. A movable teaching podium affords flexibility to accommodate different teaching styles among instructors as well as within a particular classroom exercise. The prep lab supports individual laboratory sessions and includes a much-needed water purification system.

“When students come in to a laboratory that’s fresh and bright, with lighter woods, plenty of natural light, and free of clutter, they are more likely to focus on the content of the lesson,” said Kyle.

A significant number of students taking biology courses are nursing majors, particularly in the yearlong course in Human Anatomy and Physiology. Biology majors also benefit from this renovation, taking courses in Human Anatomy, Animal Physiology, and Developmental Biology. And students in other majors who take one of the biology electives as part of the Ursuline Core Curriculum are equally blessed by this amazing transformation from the 1960’s, when the lab opened.

Highlights of the Year 2017-2018

Tree mandala celebrates Ursuline’s roots in Pepper Pike The Ursuline College community dedicated a Tree Mandala that is planted at the southeast corner of campus in October 2017.

This publicly visible, earthbased art installation was funded through a public grant from Cuyahoga Arts & Culture as one element in a series of events celebrating the 50th anniversary of Ursuline College’s move to Pepper Pike. The trees will grow and be pruned over the decades in celebration of the College’s relationship with Pepper Pike and of human relationships with all of God’s creation. Thus, the installation is titled “All Our Relations.”

Alumna planned significant gift for Ursuline Ursuline received a seven-figure gift from the estate of the late Katherine (Stochmal) Molnar ’43 in summer 2018.

Molnar, a Toledo resident, died in 2017. She earned a bachelor’s degree in chemistry at Ursuline and a degree in library science at Western Reserve University (now Case Western Reserve University). She was a consistent donor to the College over the decades, remaining grateful for her Ursuline education.

Stars Among Us invites women leaders in Northeast Ohio to engage with students Ursuline’s new speaker series, Stars Among Us, brought accomplished women of Northeast Ohio together with high achieving Ursuline students for informal talks about college, careers, life priorities and more. Ursuline alumna Denise San Antonio Zeman ’74, above, former President and CEO of Cleveland’s Saint Luke’s Foundation, came to campus in November; Margaret Mitchell, President and CEO of the YWCA Greater

Cleveland, visited in January; and Kathryn Lavelle, Ph.D., endowed professor of international relations at Case Western Reserve University, joined us in March. The College’s new Women’s Center will continue the series through the 2018-19 academic year as part of its women’s leadership programming.

Art exhibition showcases women artists of Northeast Ohio Ursuline's Florence O’Donnell Wasmer Gallery turned the concept of the “Old Masters” on its head by inviting women artists of Northeast Ohio – the “New Masters” – to submit artworks for a juried exhibition. The New Masters: Women Artists of Northeast Ohio opened in February 2018 and featured 43 works of painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, ceramics, mosaics, fiber, jewelry, and mixed media. More than 100 women artists from 14 Northeast Ohio municipalities submitted works for inclusion and a jury of professional artists and art administrators selected works for the exhibit as well as six award winners.

2017-2018 Financial Summary Ursuline College’s financial outlook remains strong. During FY17-18, our students generated approximately 87% of all revenue for the College from tuition, fees and room and board (auxiliary enterprises). Gifts, grants and investment income contributed 9%, and other income added 4%.

On the expense side, Ursuline continues to support our students. 80% of all expenses are directly spent on our students through instructional expense, student services and academic support services. Fund raising (4%) and management and general expenses

Revenue

(10%) remain below industry standards, signaling continued good stewardship.

Auxiliary services, mainly the room and board for our students, round out the expenses with 6% of the total.

The balance sheet also reflects Ursuline’s solid financial position. The endowment fund continues to grow and ended the year with its highest market value ever of $45,511,300.

The outstanding debt of the College is less than $4,000,000 and the college ended the year with total assets of $96,663,700.
