In partnership with the academic program, The Office of Career and Professional Development (CPD) facilitates the transformation of an Ursinus liberal arts education into a framework of knowledge, skills and networks that will enhance a student’s preparation for internships, planning for graduate and professional school, and realization of a lifetime of career and personal success.

STUDENT OUTREACH AND PROGRAMMING FIRST YEAR STUDENT CONNECTIONS

Our office is located on the first floor of Bomberger Hall, Suite 110.

Hours: Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Walk-in daily without an appointment between 2 and 3 p.m.

A major initiative this year was to connect with first year students. We began making our connections by attending the Activities Fair. We shared candy while informally connecting with students on one of the new core curriculum questions, “What will I do?” Students were able to learn a little about what CPD offers and how we can help them in their quest to answer, What will I do?

During fall break in October, CPD placed door hangers on the door knobs of first year student dorm rooms. The hangers with attached Smarties candy were a fun way to remind students of CPD and its’ resources.

In November, first year students were personally invited to attend a first year chat, an individual meeting with a career advisor. Students who attended the first year chat were given an Ursinus water bottle. 21.5% of the first year class met with an advisor, compared to 10.5% the previous year.

Through the 20 #snapchat- What will I do?

Presentations, 40% of the first year class considered goals and steps toward achieving them while learning about Career and Professional Development. The #snapchat program was an interactive presentation to first-year cohort advising groups, developed in collaboration with U-Imagine.

44% of first year students logged into Handshake, our Career Management System for access to CPD resources, internships and job postings.

THE VALUE OF NETWORKING

Conversations About Careers with the Ursinus College Board of Trustees More than 30 students joined the Ursinus Board of Trustees for a special lunch during a board meeting.

Representing a variety of majors and interests, students explored careers and gained helpful advice on topics such as graduate/professional school, the job/internship search and more.

Athlete Career Exploration and Networking Night This event was developed in close partnership with Athletics. Coaches were instrumental in encouraging student-athlete attendance. 27 students attended a night of speed networking with employers and past Ursinus athletes. They learned about career options and how their athletics experience can help them success.

PROGRAMS AND RESOURCES Integration with Academics Academic Department Liaison Program We continue to build on the program designed to increase communication between CPD and faculty to ultimately reach more students and encourage collaborative programming. Updated post-graduate outcomes, internship, and externship reports were provided to departments during the start of the school year.

Partnerships with faculty, staff, and student organizations CPD was invited into 29 academic classrooms for programs customized to the individual department and individual classroom. Information was shared to over 350 students on topics including CPD services and functions, resume writing, job and internship searching, job fair preparation, networking, and LinkedIn. Departments that participated this year included: Biology, Business and Economics, Neuroscience, CIE, English, Environmental Studies, French, Health & Exercise Physiology, History, Media and Communication Studies, Psychology, and Dance.

Einstein Medical CPD partners with Pre-Health Advising in selecting two students each semester to do medical shadowing at Einstein Medical Center Montgomery. For several years now we have been able to advertise this on campus and provide this excellent opportunity for pre-health students.

Biology Alumni Career Panel The biology department, Tri-Beta, and CPD sponsored this panel. 19 students learned about various careers for Biology majors from four returning biology alumni. Applied Economics Majors Meeting 60 students attended the meeting where they learned about opportunities related to their major and the early deadlines often associated. They received guidance on applications and preparation.

History Alumni Speed Networking Night History alumni from varied organizations returned to discuss their careers and “What can I do with a History major?” with 17 students. Attending history alumni were: Kelly Becker ’10 Innovation Partnerships, Under Armour; Andrew Clark ’09, Social Media Supervisor,Planit; Kristen Gray ’11,Senior Tutoring Manager,The Princeton Review; Karen Levandoski ’12, HR and Benefits Administrator, Vanguard Charitable; Nicholas Roberts ’13, Metadata & Taxonomy, HBO; Nathan Schmalhofer ’12, Money Services Compliance Manager, InstaMed; Jennifer Thompkins ’09, Assistant Director of Youth Programs, TriZen, LLC. Post Graduate Service Opportunities: Peace Corps, City Year and Teach for America UCARE co-sponsored this event attended by 24 students.

Teaching in Independent Schools…What’s it like?

The Education Department and CPD co-sponsored this program. Nola-rae Cronan '01, Middle School Director of the Columbus School for Girls, talked to 13 students about her career path from Ursinus to her current role and the independent school experience.

Out in the Workplace: What’s it like being an LGBTQ+ professional?

The Rainbow Resource Center and CPD co-hosted a discussion with 12 students on experience by alumni on being Out in the Workplace. Thank you to our panelists Dr. Gwen Greenberg '72 from Lehigh Valley Health Plan, Loreen Bloodgood '95 from GSK, two representatives from Dow Chemical and LGBT Equality Alliance for participating and sharing your experiences with our students.

How to Forge Your Path in Media & Communication Studies: A Conversation with MCS Alumni Four MCS Alumni discussed their career paths and shared job, internship, and grad school advice with 11 students.

Psychology Alumni Panel This panel was co-sponsored by Psi Chi, the Psychology Department and CPD. 24 students attended this event presented by: Jill Casarella ’17, Student at Thomas R. Kline School of Law at Drexel University, Libby Lannon ’17, Vertex Advance Program at Vertex Inc., Samantha Straughn ’17, PsyD Student at Chestnut Hill College, Kai Hardy ’17, Master of Social Work (MSW) student at Temple University, and Sam Murphy '17, Behavioral Therapist for Progessus Therapy in General George McCall Elementary School.

W.R. Crigler Institute Presentation As a long-standing tradition, CPD met with the Crigler students to welcome them to campus and introduce the services and resources available to them through the Career and Professional Development office.

Admissions Presentation CPD met with the Admissions team to discuss CPD services and statistics.

Prologue to Ursinus CPD staff presented an overview of services to over 100 prospective students and their families.

Philadelphia Experience Orientation The Internship orientation for PhillyX students covered general tips and advice for a successful internship experience.

Inspire with U-Imagine CPD collaborated with U-Imagine on INSPIRE, a field trip with students to visit alumni employers in Philly and attend a networking reception.

Peer Associate Professional Development We held two professional development sessions for our Peer Associates this year. In November, a senior Peer Associate, facilitated a workshop on Methods to Increase Attendance at Events. Our spring event had our Senior Peer Associates share with our new hires the value of writing skills and the similarities between their jobs as Writing Fellows and Peer Associates.

Information Sessions 103 students attended a variety of information sessions hosted by organizations offering full-time, part-time, internship, and gap year opportunities. The 12 organizations included: City Year, Peace Corps, Teach for America, Creative Financial Group, Olympus Corporation of America, PricewaterhouseCoopers, uFinancial Group, Kaleidoscope Family Solutions, JET Programme, and Venture for America.

The Washington Internship Institute held an information session for students interested in interning in Washington, D.C. for a semester.

A program, The Gap Year: Exploring Opportunities after Graduation, was presented by Dawn Lastowka, Senior Regional Recruitment Manager, Mid-Atlantic Region at City Year.

Information Tables CPD reserved space in Wismer Hall for local businesses hiring full-time, seasonal and part-time help or service opportunities. This year we hosted 20 information tables.

Workshops 157 students attended workshops offered by Career and Professional Development. These workshops included Resume Rescue, The Extern Process Made Easy, Teacher Job Search, How to Use Handshake, Resident Advisor Workshop, and Internships for Credit.

Graduate School The Extern Process Made Easy Don Martin, author of the bestselling book, Road Map for Graduate Study: A guide for Prospective Graduate Students, appeared on campus in both the spring and fall semesters to share his knowledge with 39 students and provide details on the process of getting accepted into Graduate School.

Christies Education, Stevens Institute of Technology Manufacturing and Engineering Graduate Program, and Villanova College of Nursing all presented information sessions. Simon School of Business, University of Rochester conducted one-one-one appointments with students.

Post-graduate information tables where set up in Wismer Hall by these graduate schools: Heinz School of Information Systems and Public Policy at Carnegie Mellon University, NC State University Master of Science in Analytics Program, Salus University Health Science Graduate and Professional Programs, and Stillman School of Business at Seton Hall University.

CAREER ADVISING Staff in Career and Professional Development assists students and alumni with academic and career themes including: choosing a major, exploring career options, planning for graduate/professional school, organizing a job/internship search, preparing for interviews and writing resumes.

Through daily interactions with students, our career advisors not only provide help to our students, they see the student perspective on what services and resources are most valuable to them. Career advisors are connecting with faculty on an academic level to find ways we can integrate our services into the core curriculum to provide students with additional resources for success Handshake, our career management system, allows students to schedule online appointments with career advisors, upload resumes and cover letters for review, sign-up for events and workshops, apply for jobs, internships and externships, network, and access additional online resources.

30% of Ursinus students had individual career advising appointments as a result of 950 appointments with Career Advisors. This year First Year student appointments increased by 106%.

The top three appointment types: 1. Resume/Cover Letter Review 2. Internships 3. Job Searching/Interviewing Career Advisors and Peer Associates reviewed 855 documents including resumes and cover letters.

CPD offers students a daily walk-in hour where they can meet with an advisor without first making an appointment. 14% of all appointments were during this walk-in hour.

Staff Continuing Education Three CPD Staff members attended the winter meeting of the Delaware Valley Career Planners where they discussed how to help first generation college students.

The staff visited three organizations to learn more about what those organizations look for when hiring students and how we can help connect Ursinus students to their organization. We visited NBC10/Telemundo in October, where we got to see intern Thalia Garcia ’18, in action. In March, we toured Vertex Inc. at their new King of Prussia facility and had a chance to speak with recent college graduates in the company’s VAP rotational program.

Then in July we visited AREUFIT Health Services, meeting with Ursinus Alumni Jeannine Stuart ’85 and Ralph Aurora ’14.

INTERNSHIPS Quick Facts:     

In the graduate survey for the Class of 2018, 75% of students reported they did an internship. 55% of those students felt that their experiential learning while at Ursinus had a major impact on their postgraduate plans.

To receive credit, student are required to complete the Internship PREP course in Canvas. The Internship PREP curriculum has been specifically designed to support students before they begin their internship. Each year the Internship PREP course content is updated based on employer, faculty, student, and professional staff feedback. This year seven Internship PREP classes helped students prepare for their internships.

Biology major Michael Corrado ’18 spent his summer internship at Cooper University Hospital in Camden, New Jersey, in the operating room. “I helped set up rooms and had direct patient care before and after surgery. I also observed a countless number of surgeries throughout many different specialties.”

“I feel like a completely different person after this internship. Interacting with so many developmentally disabled has led me to question things that I thought were hard-and-fast rules of humans, time and time again. I have seen mental disorders in action, something no paper can hope to fully explain.”

SIFA Thanks to the generosity of Hirtle Callaghan & Co., funding was made available to a student enrolled in an unpaid or low paying summer internship. Rising juniors and seniors with a minimum GPA of 3.0 were encouraged to apply in April for the SIFA award.

The summer 2017 recipient was Alana Lorraine who majored in environmental studies with a biology minor.

Alana was an Environmental Education and Animal Behavior intern with the Philadelphia Zoo.

EXTERNSHIPS The Extern Program has quickly grown to be one of the most successful and popular programs with our students and alumni. An extern is an Ursinus student who spends three to five days at the workplace of an alum, parent, or friend of the College to gain exposure and practical experience in a potential career field.

Quick Facts This year 19% more students were able to participate in this exciting program due to 32% more alumni stepping forward to volunteer to be extern sponsors.    

EMPLOYER RELATIONS CPD’s goal to provide a more diverse experience was deeply considered in the Employer Relations area this year. We have a very diverse Employer Advisory Board who bring us perspectives from different backgrounds, organizations, and industries. Strides were made in bringing more diverse employers for the Employer In Residence program and the Job, Internship, & Networking Fair.

Employer Advisory Board CPD met with our advisory board each semester and engaged in discussions regarding a wide variety of career and employment issues. December’ meeting topics included Core questions, ePortfolios, Career Readiness, and Entrepreneurship. April’s meeting topics included Diversity, Internship preparation, and Networking.

Employer In Residence This program was new this year. It replaces the mock interview program. The program was reimagined to allow the students to meet with the employer for more than just a mock interview. The Employer in Residence is available for 30 minute individual appointments to discuss resume reviews and tips, interview questions and prep, Internship and job search guidance, and sharing information about their career paths. This year 12 students took advantage of this opportunity. The following alumni volunteered their time to be an Employer In Residence:    

On-Campus Interviews 51 students participated in on-campus interviews with 9 organizations. Interviews were conducted by Creative Financial Group, SEI, JPMorgan Chase & Co., TD Bank, Washington Internship Institute, Vertex, Inc., Simon Business School, Aberdeen Asset Management Inc. and Vanguard.

Employer Lunches CPD hosted a lunch for potential employers providing information on how to engage with Ursinus as a source of talent for their organization. This year’s lunch was held in New York, NY. 10 employers attended representing a variety of for-profit and non-profit organizations. Amongst these employers were 5 alumni. We received leads for internships and jobs and also recruited some new Externship sponsors. James Sproule ’08, provided us with the space for the lunch. Professor Heather O’Neill attended to lend support and speak about the Applied Economics major.

2018 Job, Internship & Networking Fair (JIN Fair) Quick Facts:     

327 students attended the fair.

The JIN Fair is one of the highlights of the year for our employers and students. Employers continue to appreciate the luncheon that takes place one hour prior to the fair. Employers were able to network with Ursinus faculty, administration and staff over lunch and learn more about what makes our students exceptional candidates for their organization.

Ursinus Community Career Champions, our program to recognize members of the Ursinus Community who support our events and programs during the academic year, continued in both the fall and spring semesters. We are so grateful for the ongoing support from the Ursinus community.

In the spring, as a way of thanking all our faculty and staff colleagues for the great relationships and partnerships we share, we transitioned this event into a new event, Breakfast of Champions.

CPD Staff Sharon Hansen, Associate Director for Employer Relations, became the Interim Director in July after the retirement of Carla Rinde in the spring. Sharon also oversaw Employer Relations this year.

Larger Community Chambers of Commerce Sharon Hansen represented Ursinus at a number of networking events hosted by the Perkiomen Valley, Main Line and Philadelphia Chambers of Commerce. Sharon also served on the Board of Directors for the Perkiomen Valley Chamber of Commerce.

Partnerships Campus Philly is a non-profit organization that fuels economic growth by encouraging college students to study, explore, live and work in the Greater Philadelphia tri-state region. Ursinus College is a College Partner and our students take advantage of the many events offered through Campus Philly including their popular online Job & Internship Fair. Corey Dulaney from Campus Philly spoke to our students at the Philadelphia Experience orientation event. PhillyX students took part in Campus Philly events around the city.

The Delaware Valley Education Consortium (DVEC) is composed of 24 Philadelphia area institutions of higher education, who sponsor an annual teacher job fair. The Consortium acts as an intermediary in the teacher job search by providing candidates the opportunity to meet education employers from across the United States.

Additionally, the Consortium awards scholarships to students at member institutions, and annually awards up to five $1,500 scholarships to education majors from member schools. Seven Ursinus students attended the 2018 Teacher Job Fair was held at the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center in Oaks, Pa in April. Michele Poruban is currently serving a three year term as Co-Chair of DVEC, working closely with the Program Administrator to coordinate the events of the Consortium.

We joined a consortia of colleges to sponsor an additional Career Fairs. Four graduate schools and 53 organizations were represented at the 2018 Philadelphia Social Impact Fair held at Villanova University in March.
