Marketing 911: Strategically Market Through Crisis
Can a company survive a financial or image crisis? No company or organization is immune to crisis. It strikes every type of business. Workplace violence, destructive acts of nature, disasters such BP’s Deepwater Horizon, the unexpected death of an executive, fire, accidents, and product recalls pose unforeseen threats and business interruptions. Crisis management is a relatively new field of marketing. How a company handles a crisis is more important than the crisis itself. Speed, transparency and commitment to managing a crisis speak volumes about how the crisis company is judged. Many experts agree that bad news, even toxic press, can be survived if organizations are image conscious on an ongoing basis. Using the instructor’s own case studies, real-world examples, and personal experiences, students will gain practical knowledge and implementable strategic skills with the knowledge base needed to immediately implement a crisis communication plan. Working Effectively with Other Interaction Styles
People have natural differences in how they choose to go about doing things. Understanding those differences help you, as a professional, achieve maximum effectiveness in the workplace with others, your peers, support staff, and upper management alike. All four styles - In Charge, Chart-theCourse, Get-Things-Going, and Behind-the-Scenes - have something to contribute. They also all have blind spots and natural sources of misunderstanding. By recognizing the strengths of each style you’ll learn how to maximize the strengths of your own style, identify behaviors that will help you succeed with other styles, and communicate with others based on their own preferences, which will help you and them achieve business goals. Not understanding how others are differently motivated and driven can be at best inconvenient and cumbersome in the workplace; at worst, be career-limiting if not outright derailing. By understanding the differences in temperaments you’ll be able to maximize the strengths of your own temperament, identify your own blind spots and develop workarounds, prevent potential missteps and misunderstandings with other temperaments, and identify behaviors that will help you succeed with other temperaments. What’s the best use of foreshadowing, or descriptive writing, or setting? What are the various narrative points of view, and how does one determine which is best for one’s narrative?

Successful Novel Writing: The Art and Craft of Plot
FYI
Career Development courses marked with a : are online classes.
It’s said that novelists face two challenges regarding plot: how to create it, and how to control it. Agents return manuscripts saying ‘weak plot’, or ‘weak plot pacing.’ But what is plot? Books and magazine articles seldom help as they often contradict one another. In this course we’ll take an in-depth look at what plot is and isn’t (e.g., plot vs. action, plot vs. conflict, plot vs. story), when to introduce plot (and why), why the ‘protagonist’ must have something at stake (and what that looks like), successful plot development and resolution. Writing a Nonfiction Book Proposal that Sells
Literary agents and publishing houses prefer nonfiction books submitted as book proposals rather than finished manuscripts. You will write and submit, for class discussion, a sample of each section of a book proposal. In the last class we’ll discuss the pros and cons of self-publishing and traditional publishing. Included will be handouts of sample book proposals, exercises and a recommended reading list. 06/24-08/05 M 6:00P-8:30P $199 ENG313.05 David Morgan

Yin Yoga Teacher Training
NEW! Dig deeper into your yoga practice with Yin Yoga. This workshop and certification class will focus on the principals and methodology for practicing and teaching Yin Yoga. Yin has the same goals and objectives as any other school of yoga, however it directs the stimulation normally created in the posture position of the practice deeper than the superficial of muscular tissues. Yin Yoga targets the connective tissues, such as the fascia, bones, and the joints of the body that normally are not exercised appropriately by more active styles of yoga practice. Suitable for almost all levels of students, Yin Yoga is a perfect complement to the dynamic and muscular (yang) styles of yoga that emphasize internal heat, and the lengthening and contracting of our muscles. Yin Yoga generally targets the hips, legs, and lower spine. While initially this style of yoga can seem quite passive or soft, Yin practice can be quite challenging due to the long duration of the poses. Yin Yoga is informed by Traditional Chinese Medicine and utilizes suggestions for movements, breathing patterns, and visualizations designed to affect and stimulate the flow of energy in the body. In this workshop you will learn the physical postures, energetics of Qi (prana) and meridians, emotional aspects, meditations for yin, visualizations for yin, how to blend a flowing asana practice with yin, and more. Note: Course is held at 4025 Yoga & Wellness Studio, 4025 MacArthur Avenue. 06/08-06/09 SU FIT313.03 4025 Yoga Instructor Saturday 9:00A-4:00P Sunday 9:00A-4:00P

Massage Therapy - Certification Anatomy, Physiology, Kinesiology Hybrid Course
An essential requirement for the development of excellent palpation skills is a clear mental image of the structure (anatomy) and function (physiology) of the different systems of the human body. These include the integumentary, muscular, skeletal, nervous, respiratory, cardiovascular, lymphatic, endocrine, digestive, reproductive and urinary systems. Special attention is given to the musculoskeletal structures including the location of bony landmarks and joints as well as insertions/origins of muscles. During the in-depth look at neurology, students will be introduced to the pain gate theory. Understanding how the body moves (kinesiology) is imperative in order to treat muscle, tendon, ligament and joint disease. Bodies are not static. One of our major goals as massage therapists is assisting clients to be more comfortably mobile. If we endeavor to improve a person’s movement, we must first observe how that person moves now, and how they should be moving in the future. Lectures are enhanced with the use of skeletons, charts, videos and student interaction. Note: This is a hybrid course. Class meets 3 hours each week in the classroom and 3 hours online. No class May 27, week of July 4.

NEW! A new board chair, new officers, new committee chairs: this transfer of responsibilities happens every year or two for most nonprofits. Some organizations change board chairs every year, each with a new set of rules. What does this mean for the CEO, the organization’s management team, and the organization as a whole? This workshop will discuss the issues of board leadership succession planning, including the impact of a board’s size, composition and term limits. We’ll talk about structure and tools that can help make the transition smoother as well as the thought processes related to leadership roles that should take place even before someone is invited to join a board. This workshop will be geared toward conversations with nonprofit CEOs and anyone in (or soon to be
in) a board leadership position. 06/06 IOP213.11

NONPROFIT MANAGEMENT AND DEVELOPMENT
Big Game Hunting - Planned Giving in the Development Office
Too often development officers try to incorporate planned giving into their efforts by viewing it as a separate tool to assist with fundraising. According to many seasoned practitioners, however, this is not the best approach. Joe Bull, 2005 Chair of the Board of Directors of the National Council on Planned Giving, suggests that planned giving should be an ‘active process.’ Come hear about how Collegiate School implements this process and thereby consistently enjoys $1-3 million every year in deferred giving activity. How does pursuing planned gifts differ from raising outright/ capital gifts? How does a small shop raise these gifts without a dedicated planned giving officer? What can a CEO do to help? What must a governing board do to promote success? Our study will also provide a working knowledge of each of the eight most common gifts in this area, including their main tax features. 05/15&05/22 W 09:00A-12:00P $165 IOP213.16 Stephen A. Hart
