Furthermore, he served for two years as judge of third-year medical students at the Medical College of Virginia in their trial presentation exercises.

Cole graduated with a B.A. degree from Richmond College in 1943 and an LL.13. from T.C. Williams in 1947. He played second base on the 1943 Spider baseball team, which won both the state and Southern Conference championships, one of only two UR baseball teams ever to do that.

He says he was proud to be one of Coach Mac Pitt's "boys." He also was a Dean's List student and president of a number of campus organizations. He has "hardly ever missed a football or basketball game" and attends numerous on-campus events. "UR has really been my life," he says.

That his University feels as strongly about him is reflected in the distinguished service award given him in 1984, the highest honor UR alumni can bestow.

One-fourth of Virginia's state court judges come from one law school: the University of Richmond's T.C. Williams School of Law. Of the 313 judges now sitting, 79 are T.C. Williams products. Although the University has produced judges sitting across the nation and the law school's reputation is increasing nationally, the strong suit of its law school traditionally has been in producing Virginia lawyers, legislators and judges.

This article will take a look at just five of the judges the law school has produced. Most of them also hold undergraduate degrees from the University, but the focus here and in the list that follows is on law school alumni only. The judges profiled are representative of all of the excellent judges who went to law school at UR. In Virginia, where the majority of the judges we surveyed reside, none are on the seven-member state Supreme Court. Two of the 10 appellate judges, however, are from T.C. Williams, as are 33 of the 122 circuit judges and 44 of the 174 district judges.

Donald Hall Kent, R'60 and L'63, chief judge of the Circuit Court of Alexandria, Va., hears both civil and criminal cases ranging from condominium suits to divorce and custody to murder.

Since Northern Virginia was one of the first areas of the country to develop condominiums on a large scale, Kent says many of his cases involve condominiumrela ted issues from fraud to questions of whether the developer or homeowner has to pay for common areas and parking. H is longest case lasted for 30 trial days.

When he is not actuallv hearing cases, Kent's other judlcial activities include being one of six judges who, along with UR law professor Michael J. Herbert, are writing a judges' benchbook for the state of Virginia. Such a book will "guide new judges and remind experienced judges" in "the way things should be done" in the courtroom, Kent says. Marvin F. Cole is enjoying his seat on the Court of Appea ls of Virginia, although he misses the action of the trials he presided over for nine years in the Richmond Circuit Court.

As an appeals judge, Cole hears the arguments of lawyers who point out errors made in trial court. The setting is more on "the academic side of things" than in trial court, he says. "It' s a different challenge. I was on one job for a long period of time."

Part of that different challenge is the chance he now has to review criminal cases. His caseload in circuit court was almost all civil, as he was one of the three judges assigned to hear those cases.

Cole says he also now has more personal time. His life is more flexible now that he's not tied to the ever-increasing caseloads of circuit court. He uses some of that spare time as he always has used spare time: working with students. "I've never turned down a request to work with them."

Cole regularly serves as a judge for the YMCA program for high school students in Richmond. He also can be found serving as judge in the trial tactics course at The T.C. Williams School of Law and as a judge for

The Chesapeake home provides delinquent boys with an alternative to traditional Department of Corrections facilities. The home is located on the same site as the public school alternative education site, and the boys from the home attend school there.

They also are given counseling that ties in ¡with their families in such areas as substance abuse.

Grissom says it's been one of the area's success stories.

The Centerville home for non-delinquent boys and girls is located next to Grissom's church, Centerville Baptist. The home is for children who were abused bv parents and who are unable to relate to foster care.

Grissom also directed the establishment of the Court Domestic Counseling Program, the Chesapeake Court Advisory Program and the Court Service Volunteer Program.

Grissom, president of the Virginia Council of Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court Judges, thinks that the state should implement a family court system like ones in South Carolina, Rhode Island and New Jersey. Virginia's system is too fragmented, Grissom says. "It tends

Kent was only 35 when he became a judge, following a tour of duty in the U.S. Army, five years as assistant common¡wealth's attorney and private practice.

Kent is president of the law school alumni association, and his daughter Lisa is a Westhampton College sophomore.

E. Preston Grissom, 13'57 and L'60, chief judge of the 1st District Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court in Chespeake, Va., goes far beyond the courtroom in trying to help young people.

Grissom played an instrumental role in the establishment of the Chesapeake Boys Croup Home

are dealt with in District Court, while divorce proceedings are handled in circuit courts. The system would be more efficient if brought under one umbrella. The court with the help of staff people in some cases could resolve differences rather than grant divorces, Grissom believes.

"It's hard for judges to talk on this issue because someone might infer we want to feather our own nest. But the courts need to handle human beings in a more humane way." Grissom sees that humane way as including counseling and giving instructions about such questions as visitation and support and other matters involving the "most important aspects in divorce: children."

How do we solve America's high divorce rate? ''The good Lord" is the answer, Grissom believes. Selfishness is always involved in divorce, Grissom also believes.

Grissom's ties to T.C. Williams are stronger than those of many alumni. For one thing, his son, Edward Grissom Jr., is completing his first year there. Grissom Sr. remembers his own first year very well. "When I matriculated for law school, my wife [the former Bettie Fentress] learned she was pregnant. I went to Dean Muse and told him I was scared."

The dean assured him he could still make it through law school.

Daughter Cindy was born during Grissom's criminal law exam.

Grissom remembers his daughter playing around the front door of the law school. Last year Cindy Grissom Paige presented Grissom with his first grandchild, Ashlee.

Questions of custody often

William 0. Bivens Jr., L'52, also is a circuit judge in Princeton, W.Va., for the Ninth Judicial Circuit. Bivens has been on the circuit court bench for 10 years-

four years as chief judge-and has six years left on his second eight-year term.

Bivens' legal experience includes being twice elected prosecuting attorney of Mercer County and serving seven years as assistant prosecuting attorney for that county. He also for six years was city attorney for the city of Bluefield, W.Va. From 1965 to 1976 when he was elected judge, Bivens was in private practice.

A native and still resident of Bluefield, Bivens left home to serve as a combat pilot in the European Theater of War in World War II. (He retired from the U.S. Air Force Reserves in 1984 with the rank of lieutenant colonel.)

After active duty, Bivens said he "was just knocking around," was in the Richmond area one day

and stopped by to talk with William T. Muse, then dean of T.C. Williams.

"I liked him so much. We got along so well, I decided to enroll." Bivens had received his undergraduate degree from Concord College in Athens, W.Va., but he had been an engineering student at Virginia Tech and had gone to West Virginia University "to be a fraternity man." He said he graduated "magna cum laude" in that endeavor.

Bivens said he learned after matriculating at T.C. Williams that all West Virginians enrolling

there before him had passed the bar. "That puts an onus on you," he said. Bivens passed both the Virginia and West Virginia bars after graduation.

Bivens said because of his own experience he has recommended a number of people to UR's law school: "I don't believe you could get any better legal education than you can from T.C. Williams. Now, I know there are larger libraries, but I also know that when I was there, you got personal attention from the staff and the faculty. You got to know one another."

Bivens recalls those days fondly. "We attended classes in the old Confederate Hospital [the Columbia Building at the corner of Grace and Lombardy]. I remember one day on the second floor I was sittil1g in Prof. Barnett's class when I looked out the window and saw a tree fly by. I thought, 'that's strange,' but he Uames H. Barnett Jr.] didn't even slow down." The class went on, Bivens said, oblivious to a tornado that "ripped on through town," wiping out a building nearby and "throwing a car in the middle of Byrd Lake."

As a judge of the General District Court in Virginia's 15th District in Hanover and Caroline counties, J. Peyton Farmer, R'56 and L'59, hears civil cases up to 57,000, misdemeanors, and traffic cases, as well as preliminary hearings in felony cases. His caseload runs at about 30,000.

Not all of those actually are heard in court, but he has "a pretty heavy docket" nonetheless.

Farmer has been a judge since 1969 when he was appointed part-time judge, a position he kept for 11 years. Actually, "I was really a full-time judge who was allowed to practice law," Farmer says. From 1980-82 he was a juvenile and domestic relations court judge responsible for

seven counties including Hanover and Caroline. "I spent more time in my car than I did on the bench," he remembers.

In 1982 the Virginia General Assembly elected him for a sixyear term as general district court judge.

Farmer sees education as one of his most important judicial missions. "On the district court level, we deal with a segment of the population, many of whom are seeing the judicial ~ystem for the first time. We need to make them understand how the system works, what the processes are, to make them understand what's happening. So many of them are scared, nervous and need to be put at ease." Such misconceptions about the justice system as "a person is guilty until proven innocent" need to be dispelled, he says.

Farmer is married to the former Jean Anderson, W'58. Thev have four children, Dresden, 22; Anderson, 19; Valerie, 18; and Jacqueline, 15. Valerie, a freshman at the University o! North Carolina, won the Virginia state women's tennis championship in 1984 and 1985.

By University Relations Staff For the Westhampton College Class of 1971, establishing the Catherine Bell Scholarship was a way to pay tribute to the longtime registrar and member of the Class of 1927. For Paul Duke, R' 47 und H'73, the moderator of "Washington Week in Review," heading the campaign to raise funds for the Joseph E. Nettles Scholarship for Journalism was a way to help give something back to his mentor, the long-time journalism professor, alumni director and one-man development office .

For C. Porter Vaughan, R'40, and th e fami ly and friends and former players of Coach Mac Pitt, R'18 and H'74, establishing an athletic scholarship in Pitt's name was a way to help future players long after the "silver fox" was gone. For W. Dortch Oldham, R'41 and 1-1'74, businessman and trustee, giving $2 million for the Oldham Scholars program was a way to attract top students from

around the country to h is alma mater .

For James E. Andrews, the I Lewis D. Andrews Memorial Scholarship in Accounting was not only a w ay to pay tribute to his late brother but also to h elp the University's accounting program.

Scholarships have a way of bringing joy to many people. For the holder, a sch olarship can mean the difference in being able to go to the college of his or h er ch oice. For the college, scholarships often mean being able to attract a better diversity of students and to attain greater academic prestige.

Th e givers otten receive as many benefits as the sch olarship holders, however. For donors and sch olarship campaign leaders like Duke and Vaughan and the Class of '71, creating and contributing to sch olarsh ips give them a way of saying a longstanding and deeply fe lt thanks. For family members, sch olarships serve as

significant memorials to relatives.

For businesses, sch olarships are a way to be involved in community affairs and to help future employees and business leaders get prepared for th e work force .

In the costume design course, students are assigned projects in which they pick a play, do costume research and design ten costumes from the play.

UR TO LAUNCH FIRST GREEK DRAMA FESTIVAL IN JUNE Works of Shakespeare, one of the four greatest writers in the history of world drama, are featured annually at any number of Shakespeare festivals. Yet annual drama festivals that produce the works of the other three great dramatists- Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides- are exceedingly rare.

To address this imbalance, a group of nine faculty at the University of Richmond is launching an annual Greek Drama Festival this June with Sophocles' play Oedipus at Colonus in the Jenkins Greek Theatre on campus.

The Greek Drama Festival June 10-14 will include four performances as well as a symposium led by an internationally renowned classics scholar, who will lecture on Greek drama before the first performance and then will critique it the next day.

UR faculty participating in the festival are Dr. Homer Rudolf, associate professor of music, as managing director; Dr. Jack Welsh, professor of theatre arts,

as artistic director; Dr. Dean Simpson, assistant professor of classics, as dramaturg, responsible for selecting an accurate translation; and Dr. Gene Anderson, assistant professor of music, who serves as music director, composer and arranger of music based on fragments of ancient Greek music.

Also participating are Myra Daleng, inshuctor of dance, as choreographer; Ruth Countryman, inshuctor of theatre arts, as costume designer; Reed West, assistant professor of theatre, as scenic designer; Ruth Salisbury, instructor of theatre arts, as makeup designer; and Dr. John Countryman, assistant professor of theatre, as featured actor.

The Greek Drama Festival will be a community event, according to Rudolf. It is being presented in cooperation with leaders in the Richmond Greek Orthodox Church and the Greek community, and is scheduled for the week following the annual Greek Festival. During the Greek

Festival, actors will present a few scenes from the upcoming play as entertainment, and UR faculty will present the entire series of public lectures for the festival on Greek drama and the production.

"This idea has been developing for years," says Rudolf. "At UR we have the interest, the facilities, the scholarly expertise, the talent and the enthusiasm.

The Greek Drama Festival interests us as faculty because it is a scholarly endeavor, and at the same time it can meet the interests of a large Greek community here in Richmond. Wh.en the festival is established, we hope it will be recognized regionally or even nationally."

The production is planned for June so that it will not interfere with the University Players' season and because it will be performed outdoors. The show will be recreated in the early fall for the UR community.

Guest lecturer at the symposium will be Dr. Gordon M. Kirkwood, the Frederic J. Whiton Pro-

fessor of Classics at Cornell University. Dr. Kirkwood is author of A Study of Sophoclean Drama and A Short Guide to Classical Mythology and is a recipient of fellowships from the National Endowment for t~e Humanities and other agencies.

The play, Oedipus at Co/onus, is one of several Sophocles wrote about the life of the mythical Oedipus. It takes place at the end of Oedipus' life when he is old, blind and outcast, and moves him from the status of a tragic hero to the status of legend as he

resolves his own feelings about his past. Written in the fifth century B.C. when the playwright was in his 90s, Oedipus at Co/onus-Sophocles' last play-was not produced until after his death.

Support for the project comes from a grant from the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities and Public Policy; ticket sales; some University funding; and fund raising from the community.

It should eventually be self-supporting, Rudolf says. DW

f - - - - - - - - - - --+- - - - - - - - - - - - - , FIRST MINORITY STUDENT AFFAIRS DIRECTOR NAMED The new position of assistant to the vice president of student affairs and director of minority student affairs was filled this semester by Or. Tinina Cade.

"We were looking for someone with first-rate credentials in student affairs who clearly would be able to help us attract greater numbers of minority students and also help us provide highquality programs for both minority and majority students," says Dr. John Roush, executive assistant to the president and head of the search committee.

The need for more minority representation on campus was determined at a faculty meeting in the spring of 1985. An appointed minority recruitment committee, after researching the problem, recommended hiring an individual in the student affairs office who would be responsible for minority recruitment.

Dr. Leonard Goldberg, vice president of student affairs, says that Or. Cade initially will have three major responsibilities. The first is the recruitment of minority students, especially from the Richmond area. Because Dr. Cade is from Richmond, she already has numerous contacts in the area's education systems, churches and social agencies, he says.

"She can provide a strong source of support in terms of social, cultural and educational programming .... " he says.

Dr. Cade's third responsibility, Dr. Goldberg says, is to work as his assistant. In this job, she will deal with all students, faculty and administrators and assist with programs such as Working on Wellness.

Dr. Cade came to UR from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, where she was the assistant director of student activities and director of the masters program for social work . At Virginia Union University in Richmond, she was dean of students and the director of allied health. Dr. Cade received her bachelor's degree from the University of Cincinnati, her master's in student personnel from The Ohio State University, and her doctorate in administration from the University of Pittsburgh. CONTEMPORARY ART EXPRESSION HIGHLIGHTED "Contemporary Modes of Expression" was the theme of this year's Tucker-Boatwright Festival, March 9-31, which brought to campus noted art critic Donald Kuspit and telecommunications artist Bruce Breland.

Events during the festival included lectures by Kuspit and Breland; a panel discussion; a tricity image/sound exchange initiated by Breland and UR students; and a performance in mixed musical idioms by pianist/actress Claudia Stevens. Two exhibitions, one of video works and one of work by Virginia and Washington, D.C., artists, were part of the festival.

"We wanted our students to experience both the diversity of what's happening in art today, as well as the blurring of distinctions between different forms of art," said Dr. Charles Johnson, UR Art Department chairman.

In his workshop at the festival, Breland led UR students in a digital art exchange that went from UR to Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pa., and Massachusetts College of Art in Boston, Mass. Breland, who explores telecommunications as an alternative form of expression, is professor of intermedia/video at Carnegie Mellon and editor of Monday Magazine. Lecturer Kuspit, an internationally known writer and critic on contemporary art, is professor of art history and philosophy at the State University of New York at Stony Brook, N.Y., and is editor of Art Criticism.

"Video Transformations," an exhibition of 33 works of video art with a running time of six hours, explored the notion that current video works not only document the performing and visual arts, they "transform" them. An exhibition of work by 32 regional artists in the Marsh Gallery, entitled "Contemporary Modes of Expression: VA/DC Artists," pointed out the diversity of work being done by artists today.

In her performance in mixed musical idioms, Claudia Stevens used piano in combination with vocal and theatrical idioms. She has achieved national acclaim for her performance of 20th-century American music and has recently turned to performance art. She teaches at the College of William and Mary.

SIX SORORITIES COLONIZE WITH 475 PLEDGES Four hundred seventy-five women in Westhampton College and The E. Claiborne Robins School of Business are now pledges of the six national sororities which colonized at the University during rush.

Chi Omega, Delta Delta Delta, Delta Gamma, Kappa Alpha Theta, Kappa Kappa Gamma and Pi Beta Phi are the first sororities to colonize on campus since Westhampton College opened its doors in 1914. The University approved a sorority system last year. The colonization is one of the largest in American college history.

Some 595 women out of a total 1,297 registered to rush sororities from Feb. 7-10. Rush began with an orientation meeting in the Cannon Chapel. There the women received the rules of rush and were divided alphabetically into 12 groups.

Rushees attended two days of open-house parties where they got a chance to look over all six sororities. Then for two more days, the women went to "Get Acquainted" sessions to have half-hour interviews with representatives from each sorority.

On Tuesday, Feb. 12, sororities extended invitations for preference parties. Then on Saturday, Feb. 14, bids were extended.

Each sorority had a base quota of 86 members plus seniors. NC

FIRST FEMALE ROTC COMMANDER AT UR The University of Richmond had never had a female batallion commander in its 34-year history of ROTC until Kathi Lynch, 8'87, was appointed last fall.

Lynch was appointed to her position on the basis of her academic record and her performance at an advanced camp attended at Fort Bragg between her junior and senior years. At camp, Lynch demonstrated skills that placed her in the top one percent of the 4,000 students attending from 113 universities along the East Coast. She said she had accepted the ROTC scholarship because "I saw the potential to get more involved, to develop leadership skills and make decisions."

Lynch's responsibilities include command over a cadet corps of about 250 ROTC students from the University of Richmond, Virginia Commonwealth University, Randolph Macon College, Hampden-Sydney College and Longwood College.

She is the liaison between those students and Lt. Col. Frank Broome, head of that cadet corps.

As the top cadet at UR, she als¡o conducts the ROTC Leadership Lab. Lt. Col. Broome says of Lynch, "She is top drawer in every respect. She has poise, unusual maturity and is extremely dedicated. She contributes much of her own time to the program.

She will be successful at whatever she does, be it the Army or the business world."

Lynch has asked for training in finance during her four years of active duty because she plans to go into accounting after the service. She said, "I have talked with company recruiters who have told me that I will be slightly behind coming out of the Army, but that former army officers advance faster because of their discipline and maturity."

Lynch also is involved in several other activities that complement her career goals. She is one of four elected officers of the Accounting Society. She was the business manager for Homecoming 1986 and handled a $16,000 budget for the week's activities.

As a Theta Chi Little Sister, she was also captain of their intramural sports team which won last year's championship. SR

LAW NEGOTIATION TEAM IN NATIONAL COMPETITION Two third-year students at The T. C. Williams School of Law represented the University in the 1987 national finals of the American Bar Association Law Student Division Negotiation Competition.

Malcolm P. McConnell III and Kirk T. Schroder made up UR's two-man team that participated in the competition held in New Orleans on Valentine's Day. Their performance was the first

ever for the University on the national level.

Rutgers University's law school won the nation?! championship, but the point totals for the other eleven schools were not announced, McConnell said. He said he felt that he and Schroder acquitted themselves well in the competition. "We accomplished what we set out to do" in both morning and afternoon rounds, he said.

The competition began with intra-school rounds across the nation. One team each from roughly 55-60 law schools around the country was selected to go to one of 12 regional competitions.

McConnell and Schroder, the winners at T.C. Williams, went on to win in regional competition with teams from the law schools at the College of William and Mary, Washington and Lee University and the University of South Carolina. That competition was held in the law offices of Kaufman & Canales in Norfolk, Va. For McConnell, the competition was his second in a national championship as a UR student.

As a senior at Richmond College, he had the starring role in "Hiawatha," a UR Players production that won a nomination to compete in the American Theatre Festival. The regional competition was held the next year in Cainsville, Fla., when McConnell was in his first year at T.C. Williams.

McConnell received permission from the law school to perform in Florida, where the UR production took first place, and at the Kennedy Center, where UR and five other college and universities performed as co-national champions.

McConnell then continued his law school studies, and last summer he married his Minnehaha, the former Virginia E. Griffiths, W'84, who co-starred with him in the UR production, and who now is a second-year T.C. Williams student. Both McConnells are third-generation UR students.

Schroder also went to the University as an undergraduate and achieved the distinction of becoming the first UR student to earn concurrent degrees from The E. Claiborne Robins School of Business and Richmond College.

Schroder earned 150 hours for his separate degrees in philosophy and business. The normal one-major degree requires about 120. He also found time to be president of his senior class, to organize the Homecoming Action Committee, to head the Student Athletic Board and to run his own mail-order business. NC,RF

LABRECQUE URGES STREAMLINED BANK SERVICES Thomas C. Labrecque, president and chief operating officer of The Chase Manhattan Bank, told an audience of about 310 people at the sixth annual Winter Business Fcrum in February that allowing banks to offer a fuller range of financial services would increase the efficiency and safety of the financial services industry, with direct benefits to consumers, businesses and government.

The event, held at the Commonwealth Club, is UR's annual forum of free private enterprise for corporate leaders. Past speakers have included Eastern Airlines' Frank Borman and Xerox's David Kearns. Speaking at this year's afternoon session was Dr. Jane H. Hopkins, assistant professor of organization develop¡ ment at UR's Institute for Business and Community Development. Her topic was "In Search of Leadership."

"Consumers, businesses and the entire American economy are

shortchanged under the present Depression-vintage system of bank regulation," Labrecque told his audience.

Consumers, he contended, could realize substantial savings if banks were added to the locations where they could shop around for insurance. Municipal governments could sell their revenue bonds at more favorable rates. And businesses could avoid reliance on "a small coterie of underwriters" to market their commercial paper.

Labrecque concluded by urging prompt Congressional action to streamline and strengthen the financial services system.

Bradbury has written scripts for "The Twilight Zone," "Alfred Hitchcock Presents" and for John Huston's film adaptation of Moby Dick. He helped to design the Spaceship Earth building at Epcot Center in Florida, and in 1986 he

On April 2, the Student Speakers Board presented George Plimpton, author of Paper Lion, a book illustrating his experiences as quarterback for the Detroit Lions . His speech was entitled "Amateur Among Professionals."

Czeslaw Milosz, winner of the 1980 Nobel Prize for Literature and of the 1978 Neustadt International Prize for Literature, presented "The Poet's Voice: A Reading in English and Polish" on March 16. A native of Lithuania, Milosz is a professor of Slavic languages and literatures at the University of California Berkeley .

Some of his works include The Captive Mind, Bells in Winter and

Unattainable Earth.

Milosz's appearance was organized by the Russian and East European Forum which is cosponsored by Virginia Commonwealth University, the Center for

Russian and East European Studies at the University of Virginia, CSX Corp. and UR. Sister Julianne Warnshuis, who spoke on campus Feb. 4, worked at a UNICEF school for handicapped children in Nicaragua from 1976 to 1983. While there, she fell victim to regular attacks on her neighborhood in Managua.

Warnshuis says military intervention is not the solution to the turmoil in Central America, and that more than $4 billion in U.S. military aid has caused destitution and heightened national unrest. Her visit was sponsored

UR'S JOHN NEWMAN NOW AT HOME IN THE NBA For four years he called the Robins Center "home." He could be found in the main arena at all hours of the day working on his jumr. shot and open-floor moves.

He helped lead the Spiders to three consecutive post-season appearances before graduating.

Then the NBA called.

The 29th pick in the 1986 NBA draft, Johnny Newman is one of five rookies on the Cleveland Cavaliers' roster. Now the Richfield Coliseum is home for UR's all-time leading scorer. A 6-7 swingman, Newman is slowly making a name for himself in the play-for-pay league of which most kids only dream.

"Johnny's been gaining confidence," says Cavs General Manager Wayne Embry. "He's )earning his identity and what he can and can't do."

A four-year starter for the Spiders, Newman has been used in a reserve role as a catalyst off the bench for Coach Lenny Wilkins' squad.

The consummate "gym rat," Newman has spent countless hours in the Ohio complex honing both his offensive and defensive skills. A forward at Richmond, Newman has seen increased playing time at the guard position.

"Switching positions was a big thing for me," Newman says.

"I've really been working hard, especially on the defensive end.

Trying to play good defense is getting me into games offensively."

When given the chance to perform, Newman has shown flashes of the form that Spider fans came to know and love during his four-year stint at Richmond.

"I've never had to come off the bench before," says Newman.

"I just have to be patient and wait my tum. When l get the minutes, I produce. I think that's been seen all around the league."

LAW GRADUATE NAMEDV.P. Lawyers Title Insurance Corporation has named Russell W. Jordan Ill, L '69, senior vicepresident, general counsel and secretary at the company's national headquarters in Richmond. He has been with Lawyers Title in Richmond since 1%9.

Jordan is vice-chairman of the condemnation committee of the American Bar Association, chairman of the corporate counsel section of the Richmond Bar Association, and is a member of the forms committee of the American Land Title Association. He is a past president of the Virginia Land Title Association and is a member of the Virginia State Bar and the Virginia Bar Association.

Years Ago Editor's Note: UR Magazine in the fall of1983 sponsored a campus memories contest in which alumni/ae were invited to remember their days on co.mpus. We published the winning entry, "End ofa HomecomingTmdition," by Nancy Day Anderson, W'57, intheSpring1984issue. Weare

pleased to publish in this issue an abbreviated version of Lester E. Tharpe's entry on Dr. Samuel Chiles Mitchell, which won an honorable mention.

Tharpe, a member of the Class of '27, was an outstanding Spider runner during his URcareer,serving/25 captain of the 1927 track le.am. He set South Atlantic track records in the qiuirter-mile, half-mile and mile-and his record in the mile was not broken for some 40 years. After graduation, he trained for the 1928 Olympics. The University recently honored his distinguished athletic record when he was named to the UR Hall of Fame in 1981.

Tharpe retired in 1979 from the Leland Memorial Hospital in Riverdale, Md., after a career that included administrative positions with the central branch of the YMCA and a Maryland refrigerator finn, ten years as a social worker for New York City and a stint teaching high school.

He also holds a master's degree from Columbia University.

Nobody Cut His Classes

By Lester E. Tharpe, R'27 Despite Dr. Mitchell's usual sternness he had a sense of humor, both characteristics which I hope to convey in this article...

I remember one class period which I cut, evidently thinking a few laps around the track would be more beneficial than attending class. Dr. Mitchell always had a list of students he wanted to see at the end of the class. At the next class period my name was included. When my time came, he said, "Mr. Tharpe, where were you last period?"

I sort of threw out my chest and said, "Oh, Dr. Mitchell, I just took one of my cuts," asa University rule allowed three cuts a semester. He bristled; and reaching down to his desk picked up the grade and attendance book. With that little two-inch red pencil he kept sharpened at both ends, he put a big red star at the end of my name. Looking me right in the eye, he said, "Mr. Tharpe, nobody and nobody cuts Dr. Mitchell's classes." Evidently, I never did again ...

In lecturing on George Washington, when he finished, he would lean over his desk, and shaking his hand in that familiar way he had, would say, "George Washington, first in war, first in peace and first in the hearts of his countrymen; but gentlemen, he married a widow."

Dr. Mitchell's interests were so focused on high ideals that he evidently had little interest in anything associated with athletics. I do not know that he ever saw me run [on the track team], but I do know he attended one baseball game against William &

Mary my senior year. As I came into the stadium, I remember seeing Dr. Mitchell and thinking since I had played baseball since my youth I migh t answer any question he might have about the finer points of the game.

There were no questions. In the ninth inning, W&M was leading 2-1. Wegotamanonbasethe last of the ninth with two out and Ashby Cook coming to bat. 1l1e students were screaming and screeching, "Hit a homer, Ashby!

Knock it over the Refectory!" Dr. Mitchell sat there just as calm as if he were to begin a class lecture.

Just when the pitcher was ready to throw the ball to the catcher, he learned over to me and said,

He may not have known much about baseball but he knew the value of a home run in the bottom of the ninth inning.

CLASS NOTES '20s Felix E. Edmunds, L'24, after being a member of the Virginia State Bar for 61 years, and after being in general practice in Waynesboro, Va., for over 58 years, has decided to retire from active practice on or about his 89th birthday, April 25, 1987.

Emanuel Emroch , R'28, L'31, has been inducted into the American College of Trial Lawyers.

'30s William W. Wright, R'34, was honored by the Skipwith Baptist Church of Richmond in October 1986 when a newly completed educational building was named the Wright Fellowship Hall. Rev. Wright is chaplain at the McGuire Veteran's Administration Medical Center in Richmond, where he has been for the past 12 years.

Clyde T. Hardy Jr. , R'38, had a lectureship in health care economics established in his honor at the Bowman-Gray School of Medicine of Wake Forest University.

He delivered the first lecture in November 1986. Hardy retired in 1984 after 42 years at the Bowman Gray School of Medicine where he was director of the Department of Clinics. He recently was presented the Article of the Year Award by the journal, Medical Group Mamigement, for his article, "Surviving Through Dependence."

J. Richard Willis, R'38, retired in 1981. He is now living the good life at Leisure Village at Seven Lakes.

William H. Sanders, R'39, is an assistant professor at Va. Tech. in Blacksburg, Va.

'40s Jesse W. Markham, R'41, along with a group of 60 U.S. businessmen, spent 21 days in South Africa in November. In 1941, he received a master's degree in public health from Johns Hopkins U. He became director of the Northampton County Health Department in 1938 and served the Tidewater area until his retirement in 1974.

Mildred Jones continues to live in the health care center at Westminster-Canterbury in Richmond. Her sister Mary Stevens Jones lives there in an apartment and sees Mildred daily. Rebecca "Becky" Brockenbrough, who says she is doing well, and Eli:i:abeth Butler Arrasmith are also at Westminster-Canterbury Idaline "Mickey" McVeigh Ratcliffe continues in the nursing home near their home in White Stone, Va., where her husband "Rat" continues to live. He secs her daily and twice a week brings her home for the afternoon.

Martha Lipscomb Walsh and her sister manage with help in the house and garden. Martha has some difficulty walking. She drives locally and friends take her to Charlottesville and Richmond.

Estelle Myers Thornhill is well, but

her cane slows her down. This winter she stayed at home rather than going to Florida.

Elizabeth "Bean" Abernathy continues to be active in her retirement residence in Louisville, Ky., but she no longer drives.

Billie Gordon Atwill says, "from my neck up and my ankles down I am in fair shape." She spends much time reading.

I have had my second eye implant and am beginning to see well enough to read. I hope to begin driving soon.

Helen had been paralyzed from her hips down due to polio with which she was striken in 1932 at age 23, and confined to a wheelchair for the remainder of her life. During those years she maintained a radiance of spirit, courage to surmount all adversities, adaptability to all circumstances, an intelligent interest in local and world events and most of all, in people. She had a delightful sense of humor and attracted an ever-widening circle of friends .

A Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Westhampton College, she taught for three years in Virginia's public schools and for 28 years at Collegiate School for Girls where she was head of the English Department. She was faculty adviser to the school's yearbook. A lifelong dream came true when in 1974 she spent two weeks in England, accompanied by her niece, her husband and a friend who knew England well She made her home with her sister, Mrs. George Talcott, and family in Windsor Farms. For the last two years of her life she was a resident of WestminsterCanterbury Retirement Home in her native Richmond where she continued to make new friends and keep up with her old ones. Deeply devoted to her family and church, St. James' Episcopal, Helen will always be an inspiration to those of us who knew her.

As a memorial to her, her college friends decided to make a special contribution to the Class of ]929 Scholarship Fund at Westhampton, which was established at our 50th reunion. Based on academic excellence, with need as one of the requisites, the scholarship fund, we feel,

Billy Rowlett Perkins, Harriet Walton and all fonner Westhampton hockey players were invited to a luncheon honoring the U.S. Field Hockey Team when that team was on campus to work with Westhampton's hockey team. Harriet was given a large red blanket trimmed with blue and with "UR" emblazoned on it because of her participation in hockey matches all over the world as a member of the U.S. Hockey Team. Harriet is the only Westhampton graduate in the UR Hall of Fame.

Gladys Smith Tatum sat by Nan Owen Manning's sister-in-law al a Mayflower Society meeting and !earned that the speaker, a professor at Va. Tech., was Nan's brother.

On a IO-day speaking trip to California Presbyterian churches, Jessie McElroy Junkin and Bill taught mountain tribal music they learned from Taiwan aborigines. Jessie and Bill also helped Bill's sister Nettie compile Bits of Chi11t1, stories uf her wonderful experiences in China and Taiwan. The book was published just before she died at 81 the end of October.

Wilson manages a Weyerhauser door manufacturing plant there. Cindi's four-year-old son makes 10 grandchildren for Garland and Gregg!

Helene Salsman Mellor and husband Ed live in retirement near the ocean on eastern Lung Island. Their three children are in Houston, Texas, where the family spent 12 years; in Portland, Ore; and in Bark River, Mich. About three months each year they are at their camp in the Adirondack Mountains, N.Y. Sally Moore Barnes Link's husband Albert died in December 1986, after a long illness. The Presbyterian church he 8erved for 30 years will name their new administration building for him. The Rev. (Evelyn had an aortic valve implanted in 1982.) Son Charles, minister of instrumental music at First Baptist Church in Roanoke, Va., is music director of the Roanoke Valley Baptist Association.

Ilse Schott Barnhart and husband Bill vacationed in Arizona, New Mexico and Colorado. Ilse went on tu Boston to visit brother Alex and family and from there to Freibrug, Germany, with her sister.

After Jo Ward Franks retired from teaching school, she tutored children with Downs Syndrome and other learning disabilities. She and Mike have opened a new housing development. Jo has her real estate license and Mike is a broker.

Ann Chambliss Surber came to Washington, D.C., in August to be with her son, who had a heart attack. He is all right and back at work.

Effie Proffitt Young wrote from Australia on New Year's Eve that their resort town of Yeppoon was alive with summer holiday makers. Six of the Young children and all five grandchildren live in Virginia; only the youngest is at home.

Virginia Delp Ogg's husband, who had a hip replacement last year, is fine and working part-time. They have four children: Nancy, Dick, and Sam in Northumberland where Virginia and Wade have a summer cottage, and Wade HI in Richmond. The oldest of four grandchildren has been accepted to U.Va. Barbara Lewis Talboti accompanied husband David to the Netherlands in September on the anniversary of the Liberation of Southern Netherlands, "September Days". The Talbotts visited the family in Nieuw Leuscn that had rescued David (through the Dutch Resistance) in March 1944 after his bomber was shot down.

Jane Cleveland Driver and Allan were married 18 years ago after the loss of respective spouses. They are our class version of the "Brady Bunch," with her three sons and Allan's two daughters and a son, and ten grandchildren from the age of24to9months.

In June 1986 the Alumni Council of Princeton University presented Howie Bingham Kiser its Award for Service to Princeton. This award, given annually to only three persons, re<:ognizes special and often otherwise unrecognized work on behalf of the university and its alumni. Most of the award winners have been Princeton alumni; Howie is only the sixth non-alumnus and the second woman to be so honored.

Beulah Johnson Hooper and Dale have returned to Richmond after 27 years as missionaries in Kenya. They resigned so that Dale could become an associate in research at the Baptist Foreign Mission Board. They have bought their first house.

They took a trip to Alaska last summer.

Jane Slaughter Hardenbergh received a doctor of musical arts degree in organ performance and literature in 1982. In 1983 she had by-pass surgery and has re· covered. In 1984 she became a member of the first woman's literary dub in Colorado. She is director of the Woman's Missionary Union in her church. Her husband continues his ophthalmology prac· lice. Daughter Esther Jane, a singer, lives in Boulder; Cordon is at Harvard; Mary Ann is an RN in Birmingham, Ala.; and Firman is a senior at Emory U. Anne has been elected to the National Committee of Women in Ministry Suzanne Holt Bagley is teaching 12 children in a pre-kindergarten class four days a week and tutoring reading two afternoons a week. Oldest son William Jr. is in the tobacco business in Kenbridge.

Steve had a head injury in 1975 and is at Zuni Presbyterian Training Center, Zuni, Va. Anne is at U. of North Carolina in the education program Jane Ellis Babb and Emerson moved to Florida in September 1985 after 25 years at Purdue University. Emerson is on the faculty at the U. of Fla Paula Abernathy Kelton and John spent a weekend in New York City in October with son David who was at IBM school. Paula has three children; 5, 2, and 8months.

Bobbie Brown Yogel has had two books published and has spoken al women's groups across the country, on the radio and television. Meg continues as a Chapter I tutor at an elementary school near their home. Oldest daughter Beth, who graduated from Kent State U., is in Atlanta, Ga., teaching first grade. Blair graduated from U.Va. in 1985 with honors and is in law school there. Wood is a mechanical engineering student at U. of Cincinnati. Brook is on her high school field hockey team which won the state championship in 1986.

Kitty Alford Connor and Gale are still in Lutherville, Md. Gale took early retirement from Bethlehem Steel in April 1986 Son Gale Jr. is in Georgetown U. law school. Kitty and Gale joined the UR alumni tour of Switzerland in fall 1985 Jennie Jo Fyock Tignor and Milt live in North Palm Beach, Fla., where she has been president of the Florida Medical Association Auxiliary. Daughter Kathy attends Middlebury College in Vermont Son John was married in August 1985. He and his wife are students at Mercer U. in Georgia Kakie Parr Jenkins and Dick are still in Wolftown, Va. In Canada, Rosie coaches recreational skiers in between teaching English and history at Lakefield College School.

Mary Lee has opened a gift shop called Light Touch. It originaHy specialized in lighting; they also sell Shaker benches made by her son. Becky started an interior design business last August in her hometown. Her husband is an orthopedic surgeon, her daughter graduated from college and was named teacher of the year her first year of teaching, and her son has graduated from Hampden Sydney and has a scholarship for graduate work in geophysics. Harriet is taking a hospice class and teaches remedial reading; daughter Laura is a freshman at Pfeiffer College and son Mark is at Va. Tech. They took a Christmas trip to California Otho and Jo Barker Campbell, on their way to Kentucky, stopped to see Delano and Margaret Rutherford Compton and had a tour of their new lumber drying plant.

Peggy Dulin Crews' husband Merrill was elected to the Orange Bowl Committee, and they hosted the U. of Oklahoma participants around town. Barbara Dulin Polis works a couple of days a week at a tennis and jazz shop.

Nancy Hopkins Phillips and her family moved to Southfield, Mich., northwest of Detroit, last summer as Bill took a new position with another life insurance company. She is teaching at Wayne State U. in the School of Education and completing a Ph.D. at the U. of Michigan. Their youngest, Linda, is in training in Philadelphia before her company sends her to London for two years. In addition, two more grandchildren arrived last year.

Bev Wine Bowers is teaching in a private school specializing in !earning disabilities and works with tax preparation service during tax season; her twin girls spent last summer with campus ministries.

Marian Gates Breeden's son Eddie was married in August.

Gary Moore Coleman's son David was married last spring, and daughter Page finished at U. of Delaware. Bob's son Rob graduated from West Georgia U. in August and his older son David works out of Charlotte, N.C. They do a lot of

skiing and playing tennis, and she works part-time at a ski shop.

Mary and Noland moved to Memphis this fall. Daughter Marianna is a freshman at Centenary College in Louisiana.

In October, my family and I moved from Blacksburg to Rome, Ga., where Don became Rector of St. Peter's Church Matthew, our oldest, is working in Rome and Edward, 19, is attending the Prep School of the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo.

In September, Margaret Brower Almond, Judy Barlow Bolling, Jean Morris Foster and Kay Koontz Gillette spent a couple of days at Nags Head, N.C., and spent their time playing bridge and catching up on the news Emily Short Eady, her husband and three children had a trip to New England and Canada last summer. She is teaching a course in juvenile law and is supervising a third-year practice program for her students in the juvenile courts of the Ninth Judicial District Rebecca Mills Reichlin was in Virginia for her parents' 50th wedding anniversary in November from Girdwood, Alaska, with husband Jerry and daughter Leah Rebecca, 18 months.
