ack your bag, load the car, and come on back to the beautiful University campus for Homecoming. This year's celebration will be a bigger and better production than any you have ever attended before.

As you can see from the schedule of events, there will be several new activities on tap. The most obvious addition is the full day of action scheduled for the beautiful James River Golf Course of the Country Club of Virginia on Friday. Tee-off time has been set for 10:00 a.m. Green fees are $5.00. The round of golf will be followed by a social hour on the clubhouse lawn courtesy of the Richmond Robins ice hockey team and E. Claiborne Robins, Jr. B'68, tournament chairman. A delicious buffet dinner will be served overlooking the autumn-colored James River Valley to the strains of live music designed for your listening and dancing pleasure during and following dinner. The price of dinner is $7.50 (tax and gratuity included). All alumni are encouraged to bring their wives to this very special affair.

All alumn i and alumnae will want to be in the James L. Camp Memorial Theater at 10: 30 Saturday morning. At that time Dr. E. Bruce Heilman will speak to the assembled graduates about his plans for the future course of the University. This will be the first official opportunity for alumni-ae to meet and hear the dynamic new president.

Among other new activities planned will be the University-wide worship service scheduled for 9:30 Sunday. A perfect way to end a full and memorable week end, the service will feature lovely music by the outstanding University Choir and the magnificent Beckerath pipe organ. Dr. Philip R. Hart, RC'45, University professor of religion will deliver the morning message. The 9:30 starting time was set to enable local alumni-ae to attend their own church services and those who must drive some distance to their hometowns to arrive home by early afternoon.

A hard working Homecoming committee has planned this special weekend of activities for the enjoyment of all alumni-ae. They encourage everyone to make a special effort to be on hand for all the fun. The committee members are: Mrs. Louise Thompson Chewning, WC'31, Samuel B. Cutchins, B'57, and Robert G. Watts , RC'59.

lumni and faculty will join hundreds of representatives from colleges and universities across the country October 30 for the inauguration of Dr. E. Bruce Heilman as fifth president of the University of Richmond.

The ceremonies will begin at 10:30 a.m. in the Luther H. Jenkins Greek Theater.

Representatives of higher education, the community, the State, the Baptist denomination, university faculty, students and alumni will give welcoming remarks preceeding the inaugural address by Dr. Heilman. . Rector Robert T. Marsh, Jr. will confer a new medallion of office upon Dr. Heilman as part of the ceremonies. A reception on the Westhampton Green will follow the inaugural ceremony. Following the reception, guests will dine at the inaugural luncheon.

In the event of rain, the inaugural ceremonies will be held in the George M. Modlin Fine Arts Center.

Dr. Heilman, a specialist in long range planning for colleges and universities, took office September 1. He succeeded Dr. George M. Modlin, who served as president for 25 years before retiring June 30 to become Chancellor.

Dr. Heilman had served six years as president of Meredith College in Raleigh, N. C. before accepting the position of president of the University of Richmond.

Prior to that, he had served as administrative vice president of Peabody College, vice president and dean of Kentucky Southern College and in administrative and teaching positions at other private institutions. He was at one time coordinator of higher education for the State of Tennessee.

He holds a Ph.D. degree in Educational Administration and several honorary degrees. He is a lay leader in the Baptist denomination. He is married to the former Betty June Dobbins of Louisville, Kentucky, and they have four daughters and a son.

HEILMAN BIDS FAREWELL TO MEREDITH AND TELLS OF UNIVERSITY CHALLENGE e=::'here are so many reasons why I '--ff

should not leave Meredith that I've --1/ spent many nights pondering the options. I have thought about fairness and responsibility to myself, my family, and, most of all, to Meredith and the people who have been so meaningful to Meredith and to me. I have treated the matter as objectively as I know how and after every consideration , I am convinced that I must move to a new field of service and assume the Presidency of The University of Richmond.

You have treated me well. In fact, Meredith has done all I could ever wish for in regard to my personal welfare and that of my family. I have from the beginning appreciated all that has been done, and I cannot give you an adequate expression of thanks.

I am not ready to leave Meredith, but feel that this opportunity will not come to me again, and it is as nearly suited to my experience, philosophy, and interest as anything I can conceive of for the future. This is a situation unlike any of some eight or ten serious contacts for positions of leadership I have received since coming to Meredith. Nothing else has inspired my interest beyond initial curiosity. As you know, I came with a commitment for an unlimited period of time, willing to spend my life here, but realizing that a larger challenge could come at some time.

Unfortunately, opportunities don't knock when you are looking for them, but when they are looking for you.

Among other reasons I choose to accept the Presidency of The University of Richmond, are these:

( a) It includes a college for women (Westhampton) separate and distinct, offering much the same kind of program afforded by Meredith. (b) It has a men's college (Richmond College) and the two are on the same campus so that full efficiency can be achieved through inter-change of all facilities and resources-human as well as financial. ( c) There is a school of business.

My major area of study in college was business, and I appreciate the role of this program in the total University. ( d) Attached to these other elements are a School of Law and a University College serving the community of Richmond in a unique way. ( e) Everyone has assured me that the University will remain small, will provide only limited graduate programs, will not try to finance major adjuncts such as medical education, and that there is no desire to grow in numbersonly in quality. ( f) Finance is the big issue for private institutions in the years ahead.

This University has an endowment fund in the top 50 in the Nation. One gift of $50 million was contributed two years ago which, with its challenge portion, will be $60 million. I believe many millions more are in the offing and have reason to believe that much more will be forthcoming . (g) Not only will my daughters be well served by Westhampton (Woman's) College as they are at Meredith, but my son can be educated at the undergraduate level and attend law or business school. (h) Richmond is a Christian institution, perhaps financially the strongest university affiliated with

Baptists. It is located in a capital city, as is Meredith, and as was Peabody.

It is the largest private university or college in Virginia, and is highly respected as one of the leaders. (i) I believe this university needs what I can give to it at this point in history, as I would succeed a man in office 25 years who has maintained a highly respected institution much as Dr. Campbell did at Meredith in his 27 years of service.

While I believe I could continue to be successful for some while to come, I may have given the best I have to cffer and I may have rendered my best service for Meredith. I think I am a builder of a sort, content to see things moving from where they are to where they ought to be. With your help and the great service of the whole Meredith Family, we have made some significant advances in these five years.

There is no better time to make a change than when you are still welcome.

Everyone has continued to make me feel wanted. I believe that providence is in this decision, and while I submit my resignation to you with deep regret and with the feeling of tearing out a part of myself, I know that the Lord does work in mysterious ways and because of that, Meredith will in the longer run be best served, and I hope, so will Richmond.

Leaving Meredith is not easy for me. I feel a part of the college. I believe in it. I am indebted personally to those who have helped me succeed in doing some things for it. I want Meredith to succeed even more because I think North Carolina needs this grand college. She can continue to do well with men and women like you.

''I Should Have Done Twice As Much!''

Editor's note: This warm and interesting profile of the distinguished and oldest living University of Richmond alumnus, Dr. E. Emmet Reid, '92, was written by Victoria B. Obrecht and appeared in the Maryland Baptist, March 25, 1971.

his is the vehement opinion of Dr. E. Emmet Reid, professor emeritus of Johns Hopkins University, author, holder of patents, consultant to industry, and much loved charter member and deacon of University Baptist Church.

This is one man's opinion. Dr. Reid's.

On J1me 27 Dr. Reid was ninety-nine years old. Right now, he is having his autobiography read to him, page by page, while he makes an occasional addition. It will be illustrated by nostalgic pictures of places he lived while growing up, such as the fishing village of Beaufort, N. C. Known as the "father of Sulphur Chemistry," his books are sold all over the world. Japanese libraries are using 95 sets of his six-volume work Organic Chemistry of Bivalent Sulphur . In a recent book Chemistry Through the Language Barriers, he presents a new and fast way to scan chemical articles in other languages, making use of 400 key words.

Born in Fincastle, Virginia, the son of a former missionary to Nigeria, E. Emmet Reid grew up in a succession of Baptist parsonages in the Carolinas and Kentucky.

He received his masters from Richmond College, a school where, he says, he flunked an advanced course in Latin "because I was lazy," a school which later conferred an honorary degree on him. At Hopkins he began his sulphur research, earned a doctorate, and headed the graduate Chemistry Department. He also taught at the College of Charleston and at Baylor University.

"Would you believe that a big company like duPont would pay me to come there and discuss their problems with them? And they kept it up for 40 years!"

Besides consulting for many companies, he is responsible for the chief compound in tear gas. To stimulate interest in chemical research he has visited colleges without pay and forfeited royalties on patents and books.

With his wife, the late Margaret Kendall Reid, he always enjoyed music.

The holder of two patents on electronic organs, he can hear a tone and tell you the size, shape, and length of the pipe that made it. As chairman of the music committee at University Church, he led in the selection of the church's first organ. "The real purpose of a church organ," he believes, "is to support congregational singing."

In February he was guest of honor at a dinner given jointly by the American Chemical Society, Johns Hopkins University, the University of Richmond, where a new chemical library has been named for him, and former associates from industry.

Dr. Reid lives in a house purchased in 1917, works at a roll-top desk, and sits in a floppy chair. Recently, his doctor advised him to get a cane and to sit in a straight backed chair. He got the cane.

He writes on the typewriter and by hand, and listens as the students he employs read to him. He has only peripheral vision and one good ear.

Dr. E. Emmet Reid loves company and, if you come to see him, will give you keen competition in a game of dominoes which he plays by "feel." â&#x20AC;˘

tion. I've got my prothesis ( artificial legs) and am walking about 700 yards a day on crutches. Also learning to go up steps. It's not easy but I'll make it .

"The doctors all tell me I'll make a good walker and have good balance and coordination. See what athletics did for me, physically and mentally with a little of the spiritual thrown in for good measure .

"I've never felt sorry for myself; Jots of others are a lot worse off than I am, especially those youngsters I see coming back from Vietnam without arms 'Or legs.

"It was hard to take, particularly when I lost the second leg, but Uncle Sam has taken good care of me and I've adjusted. Guess I'm just too mean to kick the bucket."

His was the poet's "unconquerable soul," but Dave was lonely in the veterans hospital in East Orange , N .J. His plea for "a few lines" from "some of the old boys" was carried here and he received hundreds of letters and cards.

n returning to the office from the NCAA East Regional basketball playoffs in Raleigh, one began the rather formidable task of winnowing the "real" mail from the handouts and publicity blurbs. One envelope popped up, much in the fashion of "the" card a magician causes to rise from a full pack. Addressed to "Sportview," The Times-Dispatch, it was from the Veterans Administration Center, Bath, N.Y. One knew the contents before opening the letter which was from Edgar W. Guilford, Chief, Social Work Service.

It read: "I have your column , dated Friday, Nov. 15, 1968, in regard to Col. David Morris Miller. David died March 10, 1971, at the VA Center at Bath, N.Y., and was buried this morning (March 15) by Rabbi Zielonka of Elmira, N.Y ., and will rest at the Veterans cemetery at our center."

After four years of agony, death came as a friend to Dave Miller, but the 12letter athlete at the University of Richmond, the highly successful coach of three sports at John Marshall High School and the "doer" who rose from second lieutenant to Air Force colonel in World War II fought the Dark Angel as bravely as any man has .

With both legs amputated and nearly blind from numerous operations on both eyes, Dave wrote, in large handwriting, cheerful letters. His voice fairly boomed over the wire when he called long distance. "I'll be in Richmond within two months," he'd always say.

WITHOUT SELF-PITY

We last saw Dave in the mid-fifties when he was in robust health . He had remained in Europe after World War II and became a dealer in surplus war material. He said he sold the first planes to Israel. When he returned to Europe after his visit to Virginia in the mid-fifties he became afflicted with circulatory trouble in his legs. When it became evident that he was an ill man, he returned to his homeland and care in veterans hospitals.

In early 1967, one of his legs had to be amputated. A second amputation cost him the other leg in December of '67.

In Nov., 1968, came a lonely but brave letter from him.

"As you probably know," he wrote, "I lost both legs and had two other operations to try and get better circula-

Following operations on both eyes in Washington, Dave was transferred to the Veterans Center in Bath. His biggest worry was that his many friends wouldn't understand his not acknowledging their letters . He had to use a magnifying glass for reading and writing, and there were times when he could do neither. But when he wrote his letters were Jong and cheery. The nearer the end came the cheerier his letters.

He called early this month to say he was being placed in the coronary ward of the hospital.

"I don't have any coronary trouble," his voice boomed, "but a stupid doctor says I have and insists on placing me in the coronary ward. I've been over-doing it a bit walking and maybe I was shortwinded as a result of walking too much.

But I know I haven't any coronary condition. But you can't tell a smart doctor anything .

"Now I've been coming along in shape and I'll get to Richmond sometime this summer. When I get there I've got a lot of things to tell you. Tell all my friends hello ."

One knew then that Dave's strong fight had soon to come to a finish. A coronary condition, on top of everything else he'd endured, would be too â&#x20AC;˘ much for his strong will.

ow many times have you heard it said that "the University really doesn't care about its alumni except their giving of money?" "No one is going to do anything at the University to change." "The alumni activities at the University really are nonexistent." "Of course, we don't have a voice in the University affairs."

This is a new day and I can assure you that the statements you have heard in the past are not representative of the University of Richmond. We will and can be heard, that much I can assure you. For the first time in the history of the University the alumni organizations are preparing a detailed report for submission to the administration and Board of Trustees of this great University on where we would like to see the University go and what we would like to see it become.

Those of us who feel a part of the University and are, in fact, her product , should have a part in charting her future course .

To be sure that this proposed report reflects the feelings and views of the University's thousands of alumni, we are asking you to take part of your valuable time to give us your personal views using the questionnaire in this magazine . A small return by alumni will indicate that we don't particularly care what happens to the University. We need the viewpoints and reactions of every graduate who feels a part of this University. And what about the new president? Is he really interested in our comments? Even before he assumed the administrative responsibility at the University, he expressed to us his desire to have the guidance and input of loyal alumni and alumnae .

Our questionnaire is a formidable thing at

first glance, with some 56 questions covering a wide range of subjects . It would be quite easy to put it aside with the thought that it is too long and too detailed. If you give in to that temptation, then you will have failed to take advantage of the very first opportunity we have ever had as alumni to express our views on what we would like to see the University become. Your ideas and suggestions will be of value to Alma Mater at a time when change is inevitable. This, in essence, is a once-in-a-life time opportunity for the University in its planning and for the alumni in their opportunity to be heard .

As you prepare to answer the questionnaire, keep in mind this important factwhile the questionnaire may not be professionally prepared, it was labored over by 60 alumni and alumnae putting over five thousand man hours into its development. Many more hours will have to be spent in analyzing the results. After the questionnaire has been tabulated and the various alumni and alumnae subcommittees have studied the results, the contents will become part of the report that is being prepared for submission to the University's administration and Board of Trustees. It is our plan to publish the results of the questionnaire, along with the committee reports, in future magazine issues.

DO YOUR PART I urge you to do your part to make this project successful. Take advantage of this opportunity to have your say. Just complete it, seal it and mail it-the postage is already paid.

HeilmanNames PattersonAide Charles W. Patterson, III of Raleigh, N. C., a development officer at Meredith College, has been appointed Assistant to President E. Bruce Heilman and Director of Estate Planning.

Patterson, who was highly successful in estate Charles W. Patterson, Ill planning at Meredith, will have as his major responsibility the development and maintenance of the University's estate planning program . He will work with H. Gerald Quigg, the University's Executive Director of Development, in the overall development program.

Also, he will assist President Heilman in a variety of activities including long-range planning, and organization and implementation of routine administrative matters. He will represent the president in special activities and serve as liaison staff assistant to the president.

Patterson had been a member of the staff of the office of development of Meredith College since 1968. Prior to that, he was employed by Duke Power Company in Charlottee, N.C. for five years.

Patterson has completed special study with Kennedy Sinclaire, Inc ., a consulting firm in the field of trust accounts for banks and their correlation with the financial needs of colleges and universities . His study included key principles of federal estate gift and income tax law, as well as extensive investigation of the fundamentals of various trust instruments and life insurance plans.

During the past two years, Patterson directed the Meredith Estate Planning Program; formed a 26 member Meredith Advisory Council composed of attorneys, trust officers, certified public accountants and certified life underwriters; conducted an educational estate planning seminar for the general public, and spoke at numerous church and civic meetings about charitable giving through estate planning .

He is a native of High Point, N. C., and is married to the former Eleanor Wood of High Point.

They have three children. He attended High Point city schools and is a graduate of Davidson College, 10

where he received the A.B. degree in psychology in 1961.

In Raleigh, Patterson was a member of Forest Hills Baptist Church where he was active in youth work. A member of the Raleigh Kiwanis Club, he served as chairman of the Reception Committee .

He also held membership in the Raleigh Optimist Club and the Raleigh Sports Club . â&#x20AC;˘

Boykinto Head Parents,Friends J. Wesley Boykin, '38, has accepted the position of president of the newly organized University of Richmond Parents Association.

Boykin, who makes his home in Alexandria, is vice president, secretary and treasurer of The J. Wesley Boykin Chesapeake & Potomac Telephone Companies, Washington, D.C. The Association of Parents and Friends was established by the University Board of Trustees to "provide an opportunity for expanded representation in the University's activities and programs.

Through this new organization, effective communication of information and the opportunity to be involved in the improved programs will be provided to parents of students at all colleges of the university."

Boykin's responsibilities will include serving a one-year term; approving plans and programs for the Parents Association, the Parents Fund and Parents Day, and working in cooperation with the Alumni and Development staff to implement these plans.

Boykin is married to the former Fannie Mae Putney, and the couple has two children: Nancy Jo, a Westhampton College senior and Betty Lynn, who attends St. Andrews Presbyterian College in Laurinburg, N . C.

Formerly rector of Immanuel-on-the Hill Episcopal Church in Alexandria, Va ., McGehee's new post will be in Detroit. He served in the Virginia attorney general's office from 1951 until 1954 when he began seminary study. Traditionally, a bishop coadjutor automatically succeeds the bishop of his diocese.

FACTS: In President Madlin's 1970 Annual Report, the proportion of students attending the University who are residents from out of state were: Richmond College, 17%; Westhampton College, 15%; School of Business Administration, 23%; Graduate School, 7%. The T. C. Williams School of Law has students from 12 states but does not report the proportion from out of state. University College serves chiefly residents of the Richmond Metropolitan area. Each college has its own admissions requirements. Richmond College and Westham!{ton College have separate admissions personnel. Some believe a false impression of our campus is created in high schools when girls report to be seen by a Westhampton recruiter and the boys report to a separate room to be seen by a Richmond College representative. Not all, but most classes on the campus are now coeducational.

ALUMNI TEAM STRENGTHENS ALTOONA HOSPITAL SERVICES Rev. Kenneth A. Burnette & Lawrence G. Flannagan

Three years ago two 1958 graduates unexpectedly joined forces to develop a still uniqwe hospital program, the hospital chaplaincy . 1n addition to introducing the program to the Altoona, Pa. area, Larry Flannagan and Ken Burnette came to appreciate the strengths and talents of one another. Their letters describe a management "mutual admiration society".

Flannagan has recently become senior associate di11ectorof the South Miami Florida Hospital.

The University of Richmond provided the business education for my postgraduate degree in Hospital Administration. The University, however, was to have a much greater influence than I could imagine. The arrival of Rev. Ken Burnette ('58) at the Altoona Hospital in August of 1968 set in motion a sphere of influence that still hasn't been fully realized. Pastoral Care is still in its infancy or is non-existent in most hospitals in this country. Rev. Burnette has guided its maturity at The Altoona Hospital.

Having had no previous experience with a full time hospital chaplain I was at a total loss as to how I could assist the program or what I could expect from the program . Today, three years later I can reflect on why a hospital cannot be without a service of this type.

The quality of the program is a direct result of Ken Burnette's efforts.

The initial public announcement of his appointment caused a negative reaction from some conservative elements of the community ; but, now even formerly antagonistic clergymen will stop by to thank Chaplain Burnette for his emergency counseling with their patients , and the patient's profound gratitude for the comfort he or she received.

The counseling service which this program brings to patients and employees has demonstrated significant benefits and many times administrative counseling assists in personnel policy planning and organizational planning. After three years it is difficult to think of not having Chaplain Burnette and his counseling strength available to the management team.

The impact on the Altoona area by the University of Richmond is far greater than could ever have been imagined when two young men gradu-

ated from two different educational programs, business and religion, and ten years later found themselves working shoulder to shoulder in helping to provide the best in hospital patient care to a community .

Cooperation from the hospital administration has been the key to the successful establishment of the Department of Pastoral Care at The Altoona Hospital.

The chaplain's relationship to the hospital administration is a complex one.

He is dependent upon the administration for support of his program and for selling it to those who consider a chaplaincy service to be an unnecessary expenditure in the hospital's budget. At the same time, he must be allowed autonomy and freedom to move throughout the many departments and to minister to employees at all levels in the hospital structure. If his ministry is to be effective, his role must not be interpreted as being exclusively related to either management or labor.

Larry Flannagan 's philosophy of management by objectives and his insight into the overall internal operation of the hospital has been of inestimable assistance in integrating the chaplaincy service into the hospital structure.

Though we did not know each other at the University where we both graduated in 1958; though we graduated from different schools, Flannagan from the School of Business and Burnette from Richmond College; and though from diverse religious backgrounds, Flannagan , a Roman Catholic, and Burnette, a Southern Baptist; we both now recognize the influence of The University of Richmond in the establishment of a unique ecumenical program not in a church, but in a hospital.

1922 Rev. V. Carney Hargraves, president of the Baptist World Alliance, has recently retired from the pastorate of the Germantown Baptist Church , Philadelphia .

1926 Dr. J. Chester Swanson retired from the School of Education, U. of Cal. in June.

He had been professor of educational administration for 14 years and will retain an office there to direct field studies for the university in assisting local school districts.

1927 Henry L. Seale reports that he has been retired for a year from the Kaiser Steel Corporation in Fontana, Cal. 1929 Dr. Joseph H. Cosby, retired president of Hargrave Military Academy in Chatham, Va. was named the Outstanding Citizen of 1971 by the Chamber of Commerce in Chatham. In addition to continuing service to Hargrave, Cosby is serving as president of the Piedmont TB and Respiratory Association, chairman of the Public Library Board of Pittsylvania County , vicechairman of the Chatham Rescue Squad and is active in the local Lions Club. He is president of the Virginia Baptist Historical Society.

1935 Beverley L. Britton has been named president of the Richmond Council, Navy League of the U.S. The Richmond Council of the Navy League, made up of about 1,400 members, is the nation's largest. Mr. Britton is an employee of the A. H. Robins Co. and an aide-de-camp to Virginia's Governor Holton .

A memorial plaque and portrait of the late Rev. Vernon Britt Richardson has been placed in the sanctuary of River Road Baptist Church , Richmond . Dr . Richardson served as pastor of the church from 1964 until his death last December. During that time the sanctuary was completed at a cost of $1,700,000.

1936 Dr. Woodrow W. Clark has been named first vice president by the American Baptist Convention at its 64th annual meeting. Dr . Clark is pastor of the Fifth Avenue Baptist Church in Huntington , W. Va. 1938 Elmer Miller was awarded the M .S. degree at George Washington University in June. He is a Special Agent with the FBI assigned to its laboratory in Washington, D.C. Dr. Joseph M. Straughan is a member of the Wise, Virginia Town Council.

1940 Rawley F. Daniel has been named vice president of commercial marketing services at United Virginia Bank/State Planters in Richmond. ¡ Dr. David Dexter of Hempstead, N.Y. gave a special lecture to the dermatology

staff o.f the U. of Freiburg, Germany on May 19. He also spoke at the International Dermatology Meeting in Barcelona, Spain on May 22. On Nov. 15, he will conduct a dermatology session in Rome.

1942 William H. Bingham is a salesman with Bingham GMC Trucks, Inc. in Richmond.

1943 Warren M. Pace, president and chief executive officer. of Richmond Corp. was elected to the board of directors of Thalhimer Brothers, Inc. Mr. Pace is a trustee of the U. of R. 1945 Mrs. Madge A. Henderson, G '45, is president of the Richmond Area Retired Teachers Association. She has traveled in many parts of the world and last year visited Japan, Hong Kong and Taiwan.

1947 Jack Null recently opened a new realty office in the Richmond area.

Fred Booth Uzzle has returned to radio announcing-engineering work at WPDQ-FM in Jacksonville, Fla. after seven years in theatre projection assignments. He reports that WPDQ-FM is Florida's most powerful stereo FM station.

1948 A . P. Gates will represent the U. of R. at the inauguration of Dr. Norman Hackerman as president of William Marsh Rice University on Sept. 24.

F. Carlyle Tiller has been elected chief executive officer of Wheat & Co., Inc. in Richmond. He remains president, also.

Dr. William H. Warren is director of labor relations at the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Co. and also teaches in William & Mary's Master of Business Administration program.

1950 Dr . Arnold B. Fleshood, dean of the School of Education at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, became assistant vice president for academic affairs in July.

1960 Joseph Gross was recently promoted to director of marketing services of Bancroft Licensing. He will supervise all advertising, sales promotions, and public relations, while retaining his prior responsibilities as manager of retail marketing.

1961 Dr. L. Hugh Litchfield has assumed the pastorate of Azalea Church, Norfolk, Va. 1962 Rev. William E. Russell is the staff supervisor, Penninsula Family Service & Travelers' Aid, Inc., Newport News, Va. while maintaining a small practice in marital and family counseling .

1963 Larry L. Brown has been appointed executive secretary of National Candy Wholesalers Association, Inc. in Washington, D.C. Jerry F. Emanuel has been appointed assistant music librarian at Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill. He received a masters degree in music and library science from Indiana U., is a member of Phi Beta Kappa and former chairman o.f the New York State chapter of the Music Library Association.

Lt. Garland W. Poarch has been ordered to duty aboard the USS Hancock out oi San Francisco. He has completed two years at the Pacific Missile Range in Calif.

John W. Vaughan, Jr., his wife and two daughters have moved to Ashville, Ohio where he is personnel director at a new Reynolds Metals Co. plant.

G. Curtis Womble, Jr. is serving with the U.S. Navy in Vietnam He recently completed a one year non-degree technical course at the Naval Post-graduate school in Monterey, Calif.

1955 Dr. Lawrence B. Bond, professor of music at Catawba College in North Carolina, has been chosen an Outstanding Educator of America for 1971 and will be included in a national awards volume.

Rev. Park P. Dickerson was called to serve as pastor of the Church of Christ at Dartmouth College.

Major Paul L. Dvorak has received his second award of the U.S. Air Force Commendation Medal at Bien Hoa AB, Vietnam. He was cited for his outstanding professional skill and initiative as flight commander while assigned to the 350th Pilot Training Squadron, Reese AFB, Texas . He is now serving as an air liaison officer in a unit of the Pacific Air Forces in Vietnam.

1964 Irving L. Brittle has been elected an executive vice president of Wheat & Co., Inc. in Richmond. He was formerly a senior vice president.

CPT. J. Thomas Burch, Jr has received a Master of Laws degree from George Washington U. He has been assigned to the Pentagon as Army Trial Counsel to the Armed Services Board of Contract Appeals.

Dr . J. Floyd Clingenpeel and his wife are living in Bremerhaven, Germany. He is working in OB-Gyn at the 2nd Army Field Hospital and will not return to the states until August, 1973.

Rev. Wesley R. Monfalcone, after serving three years as associate pastor of First Baptist Church, Annandale, Va., will be leaving in August to begin work on a Doctor of Theology degree at Southern Baptist Seminary in Louisville, Ky. John N. Moreau received a Master of Education degree from U. of R. in June.

He is Assistant Principal of Brookland Jr. H.S., Richmond and also president of IAABO Board No. 90, local basketball officials organization.

Barry S. Eden reports he is practicing law in both New York City and Miami, Fla. Rev. Glenn T. Miller was awarded the Th.D. degree at Union Theological Seminary in New York in May He will teach at Union during the 1971-72 session.

Robert M. Turner was ordained to the Gospel Ministry on March 14 at First Baptist Church, Waynesboro, Va. and has been called as minister of education and youth at Trinity Church, Norfolk, Va. He was graduated in May from Southeastern Seminary. His wife, Carol, is a graduate of Westhampton College.

Daniel D. Wright was accepted for membership in Sigma Iota Epsilon, an honorary and professional management fraternity at Georgia State U. where he is studying for an MBA. 1966 Douglas H. Carper has recently completed his first year in the Initial Management Development Program with the Washington office of the C. & P Telephone Companies.

L. Wayne Creasman has recently been promoted to regional sales manager for Deering Milliken in Detroit.

Richard C. Gordon, a Staunton , Va. principal, has won a runoff election by a 2-1 margin and will become president of the Virginia Education Association in 1973. He is currently a member of the VEA's Board of Directors and president of the VEA's District G. CPT Frederick A. Hodnett, Jr. is serving a one-year tour in Danang RVN as the interrogation advisor to the Interrogation Corps, Combined Interrogation Center. He is due back in the U.S. in mid-October when he will be discharged from the service.

1967 C. Creed Caldwell, Jr. of Alexandria, Va. was the recipient of the Graduate Specialist in Religious Education degree from Southern Seminary in June.

George W. Todd, Jr. is now in his fourth year teaching special education to the inmates at the Virginia State Penitentiary.

Kenneth W. Webb is associate minister of Walnut Grove Church, Mechanicsville, Va. He was formerly associated with the Connelly Memmial and Ridgewood Churches in Roanoke, Va. 1968 Richard C. Chittum recently joined the municipal bond sales staff of First Wisconsin National Bank of Milwaukee in New York.

J. Donald Harris is in his fourth year at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, pursuing his Master of Divinity degree. He is pastor of Richland Baptist Church, Falmouth, Ky. and plans to be ordained soon at Columbia Baptist Church, Falls Church, Va. Richard B. Nichols, III has returned from a one-year tour of duty in Vietnam and presently is assigned to the U.S. Army Infantry School at Ft. Benning, Ga. as an instructor for the Ranger Departments Patrolling Committee.

Peter L. Wythe has returned from Vietnam, been separated from the service and has accepted a position with the Mellon Na. tional Bank in Pittsburgh, Pa. as a manage ment trainee. ¡

Hal I. "Supey" Hayes started a venture six years ago that has gro,wn into a very busy business for him. Swimming Pool Consultants , Inc. provided lifeguards for three pools in the summer of '65, in the Richmond area. The next year he took on a dozen pools and found he had taken on more work than he could manage. The business has changed slightly . "We have gradually moved more and more into the maintenance area which is now our biggest thrust" , he said.

1911 E. Ross Millh iser, retired president of the Gulf Red Cedar Company, died July 8.

1916 Philip M. Flanagan, former Bristol , Va. Attorney , died September 13, 1970. A former athlete , he once wrote of himself, "Known at Richmond College as "Hoss" Flanagan . If the fly ball stayed in the park, it did not get over my head-unless it hit the fence too high up."

1928 Ira Ashby McCary, retired division chief of the North Carolina State Board of Health , died March 5. Winner of the Outstanding Service Award of the State Board of Health in 1968, he had served in the division for 23 years .

1937 Milton Rosenstein , former vice president of the Philadelphia Enamel Works, died in July, 1971.

1943 Meredith Watkins Rhodes, former assistant to the executive vice president of the Virginia Manufacturers Association, died July 26, 1971. Prior to joining the Association in 1961, he had served as director of research for the Virginia State Chamber of Commerce .

ever underestimate the power of a at Westhampwoman-especially ton College! On our campus we see each year the continuing fulfillment of the vision of our graduates and the administration working together. Contributions to Keller Hall, the Tea Room, the Fanny G. Crenshaw Swimming Pool, the Emily Gardner Room, to mention only a few, are the tangible evidence of the generosity and dedication of Westhampton women. Perseverance has accomplished our goals, sometimes brick by brick and spoonful by spoonful of water for the swimming pool , it has seemed . Academic excellence and interest in the current student body as well as concern for the physical facilities have had top priority with the Alumnae Association.

Involvement in the college community has come naturally to most of us as a result of the contacts of our student days. At Westhampton College a real source of strength is the close personal relationship of the faculty to the individual . Also the alumnae have been receptive to student opinions and have encouraged them to translate their undergraduate enthusiasms into action as alumnae.

Despite these ties to Alma Mater , our alumnae , like others throughout the country, need to know more about what is going on in the University in order to understand what is happening , The college experience has changed dramatically on all campuses in the last decade. Though ours has not been as drastic as some, it nonetheless seems radical to many. Correct information at the right time can clear up many misunderstandings. New channels of communication are necessary.

As a move in this direction , Mildred Harrell Clinkscales , our former president , appointed an Ad Hoc Committee to study "Westhampton College within Its the University of Richmond Strengths and Weaknesses ." This committee, under the chairmanship of May Thompson Evans, has done a monumental job of research and writing to complete its report. The sharing and interpretation of this information by members of the committee will be an invaluable contribution to each member of our association. The method of accomplishing this and the furthering of the work begun by the Ad Hoc Committee will be the charge of the Continuing Committee I will appoint with the approval of the Governing Board.

Because of the amazingly high percentage of response from both alumnae and students to the questionnaire of the Ad Hoc Committee and the testimony

to the warmth and loyalty of feeling for Westhampton evidenced in the replies, communication will be my main emphasis as president. It is necessary that we keep constantly informed and work out some means to aid in understanding each other, student life, University goals, and the identification of areas where we can assist Westhampton College to develop further as an educational leader.

Dr . E. Bruce Heilman becomes president at a unique time in our history .

Seldom has a university had such an opportunity for greatness . Because of the

leadership of Dr. Modlin and the faculty, we have been spared the chaos and confusion of other campuses. Change has taken place without breakdown. The impetus of the Robins gift has inspired alumnae to greater financial giving. Increased communication will develop an awareness that will enable us to function more effectively as alumnae.

It is an honor to be president of the Westhampton College Alumnae Association, and I am proud of the tradition of service that links us to the University of Richmond. Friendships made within the university community are a bonus of our association as alumnae. Odd or even, Half Century Club member or recent

graduate, we are bound together by a common goal. Its achievement requires no great talent but rather a heart for commitment.

From the Secretary's Desk Homecoming Weekend will be October 22-24! Mark this date on your calendars. I know you will want to be on hand to meet our President, Dr. E. Bruce Heilman, and enjoy the activities planned. Louise Thompson Chewning, '37, will serve as Westhampton Homecoming Chairman. class news will be Westhampton carried now as part of each issue of the U of R Magazine. Starting with this issue, we shall go on the Odd-Even system for reporting class news. Other colleges and universities use this or a similar means of class reporting when the number of classes becomes too large to include all in each issue. Our 1970-71 Fund Drive was most successful. To all who had a partour general chairman, Mildred Gustafson Donohue, the class chairmen, class our agents and all who contributed-go sincere thanks and appreciation. It is this "working together" which has always marked the Westhampton alumnae throughout our history.

After operating expenses, we were able to help meet needs in the following areas: new carpeting with pad, and draperies for the Reception Room of Keller Hall (replacing those in use since the thirties), 100 chairs for large meetings in the Reception Room or whereever needed (all will rejoice that the old splintered ones will gradually be replaced!) , a contribution to the Catherine Bell Scholarship Fund, which was started as the senior gift of the class of 1971, and a continuance of the Dean's Discretionary Fund (two projects already sefurnishlected from this Fund-special ings for a much needed seminar room, and audio equipment for the Reading Room.

Waverly Anderson (Elsie Morgan, '23) 2108 Villa Drive, Greensborn, North Carolina 27403 On April 17, 1971, Westhampton alumnae of the North Carolina Triad Area (Greensboro, Winston-Salem, High Point) held their annual spring luncheon meeting at the King's Inn in Greensboro. Thirteen attended: 7 from Greensboro and 6 from Winston-Salem. The chairman held a short business meeting, followed by a discussion of W. C. news: the retirement of Dr. Modlin, the selection of the new president, and the impact of the discontinuance of Westhampton alumnae notes in the Bulletin.

RICHMOND CLUB President: Mrs. Gerald Van Ausdall, Jr. (Rebecca Grissom '60), 4516 Southampton Road, Richmond, Virginia 23235 About 90 alumnae and their guests enjoyed our spring luncheon at the Country Club of Virginia. Three new officers were¡ elected to serve two-year terms. They are: Suzanne DuPuy Black, '61, 2nd vice president; Quita Tansey Collins, '66, recording secretary; and Joyce Still Gibson, '56, treasurer. President, Rebecca Grissom Van Ausdall, '60, 1st vice president, Julia Jett Shepherd, '59, and corresponding secretary, Joan Hoch Yowell, '64, will continue to serve the second year of their terms.

Richmond Club members were hostesses for the exam teas for the students in May. Board members enjoyed a buffet supper at Becky Van Ausdall's on May 11 before the final board meeting to evaluate this year's activities and to plan for those for next year.

The 1971-72 calendars are now available and co-chairmen Cary Bell Harris, '61, and Em St. Clair Kay, '60, will gladly fill your orders.

At our February 10 meeting we were honored to have as guest speaker, one of our own members, Mrs. Hugo Wermuth (Hallie Attkisson, class of 1910), Women's College Richmond. Mrs. Wermuth presented a most informative talk on the Book of Remembrance. This book contains authentic information from the College's beginning to its present time. The Richmond Female Institute dated from 1854 to 1894; the Woman's College Richmond from 1894 to 1916, at which time it became Westhampton College. As Mrs. Wermuth said , "the Book of Remembrance has brought alumnae closer together and opened doors to many things we had forgotten."

On May 6th our club welcomed as guest speaker the Reverend C. P. Minnick, Jr., minister of the Williamsburg United Methodist Church. Reverend Minnick is a dynamic speaker and reviewed the thoughtprovoking book , "The Greening of America"

by Charles A. Reich, Professor of Law at Yale. A stimulating discussion followed the review.

Our next meeting will be in October at which time prospective Westhampton students from Williamsburg, James City, and York counties will be invited.

Woman's College Richmond Alumnae gathered for a luncheon at Commonwealth Club on May 6th to honor Dr. and Mrs .

Modlin and to express our appreciation of what Dr. Modlin, in 25 years of dedicated service, had done for the University of Richmond and for our Association.

A gift of antique silver was a symbol of our admiration and love. Guests were Dr. and Mrs. Charles Wheeler, Deans ot Westhampton, Miss Mary Louise Gehring and Miss Clara Keith, Alumnae Secretary, Mrs . Louise Long and former Secretary, Mrs. Leslie Booker . Attention was called to the presence of the three Herring sisters, Zelia '12, Frances '12, Edwina '14. Also present were Louise '13 and Elizabeth '14 Ellyson, sisters and their sister-in-law Belle Gayle Ellyson, Vice-president of W. C. R. Alumnae and sponsor of our Nostrae Filiae .

Louise Ellyson Wiley '43 Westhampton, is the daughter o.f Elizabeth Ellyson. Mary Morris Ellyson '37 Westhampton, is the daughter of Belle Gayle, and Edie Graves, '60 Westhampton, is the daughter of Mary Morris. The mother of Louise and Elizabeth Ellyson attended R. F. I. Four generations are thus a part of the history of R. F. I., W. C. R. and Westhampton College.

Our members were guests for a luncheon on the day of the Carver Lecture program, an annual memorial to Margaret E. Councill, mother of Hally Councill '05, (Mrs. D. J. Carver.)

Annie Kate Barnes '02, now in her 89th year, a patient in a nursing home, recalls a minstral show given by the students. In light vein reference is made to Dr. J. A. C. Chandler, dean of W. C. R. and acting president, and his romance resulting in marriage to Lenore Duke of the faculty.

Dr. Chandler was Supt. of Richmond Public Schools , and President of William & Mary. Their son, Admiral Alvin Duke, was also President of W & M from 1951 to 1960, when he became Chancellor.

From Rhodesia Africa, Ruth Gilliam '07, Mrs. R. F. Simmons, writes "Many of the News Bulletins of U. of R. have found their way to me and read with pride and pleasure. I am happy that in a small way my personal history fits into that of thig magnificent university."

A letter from Edwina Jones , daughter of Henrietta Ankers '03, Mrs. Campbell Jones, tells of finding in her mother's possessions, an article of several pages title,d "Concerning the Faculty of W. C. R. 1902-03."

We shall miss a loyal member from our midst, Elizabeth Willingham Ward, one of four sisters, alumnae of W. C. R., Caroline, widow of T. Justin Moore , former member of the Board of Trustees of tJ. of R., (their son, T. Justin Moore Jr., presently a member), Belle '00, Mrs. Ralph Ferrell, their two sons, alumnae of U. of R., and Corneille (Mrs. Downer) of Texas. The father of the Willingham sisters was Dr. R. J. Willingham, member of the Board ot Trustees of Richmond College.

In answer to ours of condolence, a Jetter of appreciation from Mr. Walter H. Hall, husband of Nancy Coffer Allen '06, expresses that Nancy made frequent reference to the Alumnae Association and its work.

Alice Bohmer Rudd, genealogist, graduate of W. C. R., author of several published family histories and of the two-volume Shockoe Hill (Richmond) Cemetery Records, gave copies to the U. of R. Library through our alumnae. She was past president of the District of Columbia and the Fort Myers Fla. chapters of the United Daughters of the Confederacy , a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the American Pen Women, the National Genealogical and the Florida Historical Societies.

Recent contributions to the "Book of Remembrance" are from the children of Etta Ankers Jones '03 artd from the children of Lucy Fogg Ball '05.

A gift from the sisters and brothers of Emily Ryland Moore '01 and Florence Ryland 'Ol is in memory of them. The three Ryland brothers are alumni of Richmond College. The great uncle of the nieces and nephews mentioned was Robert Temple Ryland, first president of Richmond Col-

lege 1840-1866 and later member of the faculty of R. F. I. Cornelia Scott (Mrs. Parham F. Tuck) honors her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Carrington Scott. Mrs. Scott's son, Richard Cabell, attended Richmond College before receiv" ing his appointment to U. S. Military Academy .

A brief history concerning the Carver Room was prepared for the hostess of the Fine Arts Building.

A suggestion was made by a Richmonder, a collector, that art pupils in the Richmond schools might have the advantage of seeing the exhibits at the George M. Modlin Fine Arts Center if the School Board desired. A schedule of date and time could be arranged for supervised tours if the University approved of the idea.

Shortly after reunion, Frances Vaughan Faglie finished her work with the American Foundation for Work with Autistic Children in Washington, D . C., and immediately set up a travel schedule which included Cape May , N. J., a Faglie reunion in Waco, Tex., followed by visits with former work students in Mississippi and Kentucky; Nova Scotia; and Vancouver and British Columbia.

guests, Elizabeth Hill Schenk and Dorothy Sadler Corprew , met at the Virginia Museum. After lunch Kent told us about her trip, showing snapshots, postcards and mementoes which brought the life of that area, especially New Guinea, vividly close.

In April, at the spring luncheon meeting of the Richmond Alumnae Club, at the Country Club, 1923 had a fair representation with Altha Cunningham, Rosa Sanders Thomas, Ethney Selden Headlee, Josephine Tucker and Dorothy Sadler Corprew. The good fellowship and musical program were enjoyed.

Rosa is glad that her husband, Robert, is relaxing in his retirement.

Elmira Ruffin Bowen has had successful operations for cataracts recently.

Camilla Wimbish Lacy and Evan are also in good health at last reports.

One of the Richmond newspapers carried a fine profile of Hannah Coker in June. It covered her . "green thumb", acquired from her grandfather, as well as the musical talent of her mother; her study with Casadeseus, her interest in her church and the youth of today. Her contributions to Westhampton are manifest in the landscaping projects and the music library, which consists of 2500 records and about an equal number of scores. It is really the work of a lifetime.

Hannah's present plans are a trip to Europe to see how the people there really live, and gardening, both at college and her own home.

Dora Ransone Hartz and Dennis are traveling in Europe with the University of Richmond group this summer.

The splendid gift from Garland Gray, a dormitory for two hundred fifty girls, dedicated to and named in honor of Agnes Taylor Gray, will be a fine addition to Westhampton. Agnes was a member of . 1923, so our special thanks are in order.

Mildred Campbell Broome writes from England that she plans to spend next Christ mas here with dau ghter, Barbara, and to become a permanent resident of the U .S.A. in 1974. We hope she can also work in our 1973 reunion.

News travels in roundabout ways, for Mildred writes that Sarah Lee Atkins and Clyde were to be in Los Angeles this summer.

He will preach there for three months, as he has retired from his Baltimore church. One of their granddaughters attends Goucher and another Mary Washington .

In May, Alumnae Week-end was properly devoted to recognition of Dr. Modlin on his retirement. You have seen the program and enjoyed this memorable occasion in person or vicariously, as I did. Only five from 1923 attended the luncheon. They were Hannah Coker, Elizabeth Hill Schenk, Mildred Pulliam Stone, Dora Ransone Hartz and Ethney Selden Headlee . Hannah was recognized on her retirement after thirty-six years of remarkable service.

Had we given a prize for the one who came the farthest to attend our reunion last year, it would have gone to Billy Spangler Rogers who flew in from Las Vegas. As the school where she teaches was in session she could only stay the week-end, but she said at that time she'd come back in '71 when she could stay longer, and she did. She was

in Virginia several weeks in June and July, visiting Gladys Wright Cocke in Fredericksburg, Micky McVeigh Ratcliffe near White Stone, and Martha Lipscomb Walsh in Fork Union. She also saw Buck Ashton while visiting friends in Alexandria. While she was here Gladys drove the two of us to Richmond, stopping in Doswell to pick up Wilhemina. She had also invited Cathryn and Jeanette Henna to meet us at Miller and Rhoads for lunch. The six of us had a delightful time-good food and good conversation. Cathryn and Jeanette told us about the exciting trip they're taking in August - Warsaw, Moscow , Leningrad, Prague, and other cities behind the "Iron Curtain." Through A.A.U.W., meetings were being arranged with university women in the various places.

At the time of the reunion last year, we decidedâ&#x20AC;˘ that we would like for the money our class contributed ( over and above the $7.00 per person to cover expenses of the Alumnae Association) to be used towards erecting permanent signs to designate the various buildings on the Westhampton campus. This idea was presented to the proper authorities in the University Administration.

Although we have not received official word, we understand that they are considering erecting a permanent brick background on which will be placed a bronze plaque with the names of the buildings with directional arrows, similar to the one on the Richmond College campus at the bus stop.

Signs have already been placed in front of each building giving the name of the building.

As news for Odd-numbered classes will appear only in the fall and spring issues of the University of Richmond Magazine , you will have the rest of the year to write me before my next manuscript goes to the Alumnae Office around February 1. I should think each of you might manage to mail me one letter in that length of time , but if you don't , send me a Christmas card and write some news on the back. Our fiftieth reunion is less than four years away, so let's keep in touch!

Luncheon on Saturday found Leone Cooper and Margaret Leake joining the group. We topped it off with the play put on by the University Players on Saturday evening.

in Urbanna. Lauretta stays "as busy as she wants to." She and Gene have a first floor apartment in a condominium on a canal at Ft. Lauderdale. Lo-ts of travelling, blue ribbons in creative dress design, children and grandchildren. Can you believe that our class baby is mother of a 15 year old?

Johnnie's note showed a picture of her attractive house , Minnetree Hill, at Providence Forge, Va . Family events were keeping her too busy to attend. Dorothy Pulliam Dysart and her husband are involved in the fun and work in restoring and maintaining their home and land near Morganton, N. C. Virginia High Begore is enjoying the children of her three married daughters, two of whom live in Wilmington. She comes to Fairfax to visit another daughter and really should stop by sometimes .

Gertrude Murrell DuPont is enjoying an entirely new career-in archaeology . Teaches a class here at Virginia Commonwealth University and goes to sites of the ancient world for digs.

Even our retired members keep busy so our 45th should produce Jots of new directions. To get ready for that we will have as chairman, Selma Rothschild Mann; Alumnae Fund Chairman. Laura Thornhill ; and myself for the Bulletin news.

Elizabeth Gill Minor has added to her busy life the presidency of King and Queen Historical Society .

You will all be saddened by the news of the death of Amelia Ullman on Tuesday , June 29. In spite of her illness she had remained aotive and in 1970 was cited as Volunteer of the Year by the Richmond Section of the National Council of Jewish Women . Many projects claimed her time and interest, but one which gave her special satisfaction was a cultural enrichment program for underprivileged children .

Rhea Tallev Stewart is in the midst ot cutting her book, 'The Fire in Afghanistan," to be published next year. A party which Rhea and Arthur gave at their shore cottage to honor relatives of the subject of her book, Amanullah , the late ex-king of Afghanistan, was publicized in the Hartford,

Connecticut, newspaper with almost a full page of pictures and story .

Ruth Hiller Johnson writes-why is it we never really appreciate anything until it is taken away from us? I always enjoyed reading the news of my classmates , but just never could seem to find the time to sit down and write about myself. To begin with I have been happily married to Harry Lee 'Johnson since I 957. Still no children, but oodles of nieces and nephews. Ruth is working as technical librarian for ~he Pigments Division of American Cynamtd Com pany. The J ohnsons live on "a very beautiful beef cattle farm just outside the town of Amherst . . . about six miles north of Sweet Briar. Our great rivalry notwithstanding, the campus at Sweet Briar is almost as lovely as Westhampton' s." Harr y is also assistant to the golf greens superintendent at the local country club .

Anne Fisher Keppler-We bought a small house and moved from our Faculty House last summer after Philip's death. Lisa , 16, and Peter , 9, and I have plenty of space and can accommodate Tod ( 4th year at Antioch) and John (livin g in Colorado) and thei r friend s when they turn up . I'm in the Admis sions Office at Smith .

Liz Parker Cone 's daughter Frances made her debut in June , followed by a "Sundowner" Party at the Cones ' lovely home. As you might guess, the color theme was tobacco gold! The dance floor beside the pool was covered and decorated like a tobacco barn . Two bands played and the meal of country food included fried chicken and ham hoe cakes . . . A picture of Frances appeared in the June issue of Town and Country along with America's top debs.

Alice Rawlings Johnson's husband , Rick, is in real estate in Fredericksburg . One son, Fitz , is in the last semester at Randolph-Macon while tennis star, Ginnie , is a sophomore at Mary Baldwin. The youngest, Bill, is a high school senior and ardent golfer.

Mary Campbell Paulson is a member of the School Board and is doing independent writing for a NASA publication. The whole family went to Florida for the Apollo launching last January. John is now a senior at Georgia Tech . Lyn is a senior at William and Mary .

Dor is Mills Harrell will continue teaching Spanish in Fairfax County . Louis is still under treatment at Walter Reed Research

Center, but the whole family visited Texas this summer and made a short trip to Mexico as well.

Ruth Wicker Lynch was in Mexico, too, this summer. She spent her vacation with a family in Guadalajara brushing up on her Spanish.

Frances Crowder Laird and Doug plan to drive through Ireland, Scotland and England in September. This past spring Doug attended the Advanced Management Seminar for Executives at Harvard. Randy, a senior, has been elected president of Student Government at Hampden-Sydney for the coming year.

Kathy Mumma Atkinson's family spent two weeks in Nova Scotia during July and loved driving through the beautiful countryside. They returned by way of Erie for Kathy's grandmother's 95th birthday! John has gone to Japan for the International Boy Scout Jamboree and will tour Tokyo and Kyoto before camping near Mt. Fugi.

Ruth Maris Wicker has returned to Richmond after two years in North Carolina, preceded by two years in Samoa. Tivis is an administrator for the Community Colleges and Ruth is teaching Spanish and French. After a year of college, Maris, 19, is traveling for a while. Jay, 17, starts a Marine Science course this fall as the ocean is his first love.

Jean Motter Dempsey writes-we've had a very quiet year which is good considering that we live next door to Berkeley! Had one lovely trip to Las Vegas-two nights and three days of sheer debauchery ... It was nice h4ving Kathy Mumma for lunch last summer, but I scored zero in recognizing faces in the latest class picture. ~faybe I'd better stay away from reunions.

Anne Twombley Leland sent a card in the midst of packing for an August vacation on the Cape. Jim was Harold Hill in the spring production of THE MUSIC MAN. Melissa graduated from Smith and Deirdre receives her master's from Syracuse in August.

Lottie Blanton Applewhite and husband, Warren, took a "See America" tour with another couple in May and June. They flew to Las Vegas and rented a car; drove to the Grand Canyon, Mesa Verde and the Rocky Mountain National Park. Later they saw Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse, and spent several days in the Old Faithful Inn at Yellowstone. They continued on to the Grand Tetons and Salt Lake City where they turned in their car and flew home. A final thrill was the helicopter trip across San Francisco's Bay. Lottie reports that this was a marvelous way to travel ... We have seen the great plains of America and the salt flats and the deserts. We are glad we have and know that those are a part of America also. We met lots of college kids in the National parks. They really were wonderful models of American youth and were doing a super job in the park facilities.

Betty Clement Adair deserves the thanks of all for the letter she sent each of us since none of her material was printed last year.

As to the Youells, we wound up a memorable tour in Puerto Rico by renting an Aquaminium (houseboat) in St. Thomas and cruising through the Virgin Islands. The Laird family joined our family and we all agreed it was the most relaxed family vacation we'd ever had. Mac retired from the Navy in February and John graduated from

VMI in May. Bill is now a first classman there. Our new home is located on a small fresh water lake and we can fish from our backyard. The ocean is only a short drive away. After five years overseas, it is fun seeing old friends in our beloved Virginia.

Darrell majored in political science. and was Phi Beta Kappa and ODK. He is married and will enter the University of Virginia Law School.

We extend our deepest sympathy to Jean Waldrop in the loss of her sister, Mrs. Emma B. Cruickshanks, after a short illness, and to Dottie Hughes Freitag in the loss ot her father, Mr. Steven Hughes.

Mary Lou Coghill Poland's daughter is married.

Betty Brown Parsons' son, Shep, 16, topped all other contestants in the nation in one division of a French aptitude test with a grade of 94.3. There were 41,000 finalists.

Sara Frances and Sam Derieux and their daughter, Justin, went on a European vacation this summer. Justin remained in England with a study group from high school, and Sam and Sara Frances had an unexpected stay at Shannon Airport in Ireland when their flight was the victim of a bomb hoax.

Our 20th Reunion was every bit as grand as the others. Not so many of us came, and we truly missed those of you who didn't make it, but we really had two days of wonderful fun and "togetherness". We are grateful to those Richmond girls who made the arrangements and did all the work that goes into making such a gathering the success it was. Among those there to enjoy the weekend were: Frances Arrighi Tonacci, Betsy Bethune Langhorne, Rita Bross, Martha Carpenter, Maryglyn Cooper McGraw, Suzanne Gibson Madden. Rene Groves Howland, Shirley Hall Murphy, Charlotte Houchins Decker, Jo Hyche Baulch, Liz Latimer Kcikiko, Jane Lawson Willis, Jean Lowe Bradley, Jean Love Hanson, Bookie Maroney Oberle, Marilyn Montague Harper, Mary Lee Moore Vinson, Ann Plunkett Rosser, Ann Rogers Crittenden, Norma Streever Doss , and Lea Thompson Osborn.

Of course I was there or I wouldn't have this job that Ann Rogers Crittenden said she would do with me.

Friday night we dressed up, even had one of our members in "hot pants", and enjoyed a gourmet dinner at the James River Country Club. Saturday night we went informal to a picnic at Jane Lawson Willis' and David's house. They got more than they bargained for in that we had to move our crowd of nearly fifty from their lovely yard into their equally lovely house.

After looking ourselves over for two days we came to the conclusion that time had been good to us and in 1971 we look as well as we did in 1951. Ann Rogers Crittenden is the skinniest; Liz Latimer Kokiko had come the greatest distance; Martha Carpenter has furthered her education the most; Shirley Hall Murphy has the most children; and I have changed the least, and I didn't even get my hair "touched up".

I don't know whether the Class of '51 doesn't do much or just doesn't write much, but we do need and want news of you and your families. So please take a few minutes twice a year and drop me a line. Our news goes in the Fall and Spring issues.

Nancy Johnson White attended the PTA Summer Conference at Randolph Macon College. She was president of the Mechanicsville Elementary School PT A last year and will be president again this year.

Arnett Kizzia Neuville and family have moved to Virginia Beach. Their address is: 2504 San Miguel Court, 23456. Bob is Division Traffic Manager of Eastern Virginia for C and P. Joy Winstead Propert said that the whole family enjoyed Dave's four weeks of active duty with the Navy this summer at the Naval Air Space Institute in Pensacola,

Florida. Fishing, surfing, and snorkeling took up much of their time.

Martha Jordan Chukinas and Warren have long been active in their local Association for Retarded Children. Warren was recently elected president of the Virginia association. They both enjoy tennis and have had an active summer with Georne's Babe Ruth baseball and summer band-; kindercamp for Mary ; and camp for John.

Nancy Kipps Hughey and Ray enjoyed fishing and a trip down to the Chesapeake Bay on their new 27-foot cabin cruiser.

Their Jo-Anne is recovering from a bad break in her leg in the spring .

Beverly Eubank Evans was recently honored by being chosen to represent her junior woman 's club as hostess candidate for the Tobacco Festival. Julia Jett Shepherd and Sue Kaufman Wilson are returning to the classroom this fall. Both will be teaching at the Richmond Day School.

She has received a Master of Education degree in the field of guidance from U. Va. and plans to substitute in the fall.

Dave and Becky Leber Crookshanks moved to 120 Janney Ct., Fredericksburg 22401, in March, in order to be closer to Dave's job. Dave now has his own grocery Becky reAND SHOP-and store-STOP ports it has been quite exciting starting out on their own.

Jim and Louise Inman Chandler have moved to their new home at 613 Westwood Drive, Richard son , Texas 75080-a northern suburb of Dallas . Jim has begun his plastic surgery residency at Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dalla s, though he will rotate at Baylor University Hospital first. Louise , Jimmy and Matthew have already joined the city pools, rec center and tennis courts.

They even have library cards! Louise invites all visitors from near or far.

Baxter and Linda Taylor Carter are combining the joys of parenthood with fixing up 2. new home at Rt. 1, Box 474, Hardy, outside Roanoke. Baxter is Virginia-just with Equitable of Iowa.

Suzanne Dupuy Black wrote that she and her family have been in Sewanee, Tennessee, at the University of the South where Don has been in school for five weeks.

Suzanne Foster Thomas will spend the month of August at Rehoboth Beach . Bill has been very busy recently in his position as chairman of the State Democratic Party and because of the upcoming convention in Hampton will be unable to vacation with Suzanne and the children. classmates include Other vacationing Mary Catherine Sellers Dunn and family who are spending five weeks in Maine, and Martha Hinkle Fleer and family who decided to try the European scene this summer.

Barbara Spiers Causey and family vacationed a month in Virginia visiting families and other WC classmates. She reports that the beach was a great place for her children 3½, and to run _ off their energy-Bonnie, the twms, 2½ , have plenty!!

Mary Lee Chilton Bullock has moved to Gloucester Point where her husband is pastor of Gloucester Point Baptist Church.

They have enjoyed touring historic Yorktown and Colonial Williamsburg.

Ebb and Gayle Gowdey Williams attended

the Virginia Bar Association meeting at the Greenbrier in July . Ebb was elected a member of the Executive Committee of the Young Law yers Section of the Association from the South side Distri ct. They enjoyed seeing Norman and Joyce Slavin Scher and Sam and Anne Abbitt Kerr. Ebb and Gayle will vacation in Williamsburg and Jamestown in August.

Hobby and Kitty Thorburn Neale are leaving the children with grandparents and are flying to California for two weeks in August . Missed seeing Kitty at the reunion but a very young man in her life just wouldn't wait!

Margaret Denman , probably our most traveled classmate , wrote a fascinating letter of her work and travels. She is approaching her fourth year teaching sixth grade social studie s in a suburb of Boston. She has been abroad ever y year since graduation and will go to Nova Scotia this summer.

Carol Chapman received her master 's degree in education from U . Va. at the termination of the session in August.

Nancy Adams Booker reports an active life taking care of her two girls-Anne , 2½ , and Sarah Elizabeth, 4 months-doing church work , and working in the Junior Woman's Club.

Jennie Stokes Howe still enjoys life by the the summer programs Carillon-attending there. Her boys also have a tendency to keep her "on the go."

Mary Evans writes she is "dean-ing" (as she puts it) at Miami Uni versity in Oxford , Ohio-13 ,000 students! Her job involves training and supervising the work of the graduate assistants in colle ge personnel , and coordinating the academic advising of the freshman class-in addition to serving as the Mortar Board adviser. She is also active in both the national and state associations of deans in the fields of professional development and program planning .

Betty Wade Blanton Jones and I had lunch with M ary Catherine Sellers Dunn earlier in the summer. Betty Wade, Jerry and Sara Elizabeth were up for our club's Member-Guest weekend in July. Monty and Sara-both 3½ -had a great time trying to outdo each other!

I'm sure all of us were saddened upon hearing of the death of Kathryn (Kitty) Haller. Kitty died as the result o.f an automobile accident on Friday , April 2. A memorial was sent to the Renal Unit of the University of Virginia Hospital from our class.

Carol Damerel Newton and Joe are in Bluefield, Virginia. Carol is in public health nursing in West Virginia. She writes that Barbara Gardner Cook and Richard are in Vineland, New Jersey, where he is working in migrant workers ministry. They have two children, Sarah and Matt.

Pam Myers completed her masters in French at the University of Massachusetts, June 11. She is continuing to teach at the University.

Lynda Beran Murray and Frank both teach in the psychology department at Randolph Macon Woman's College in Lynchburg. Frank is an associate professor in the department. They have three children.

Susan Darden Schneider is a registered patent agent. She does some work for Colgate in her own home. Larry is still with the F.B.I. and flew as an armed guard for Pan American for several months.

Susan wrote that Carol Baldwin is married (Mrs . William F. Rentz), and living in Evanston, Illinois.

Janet Renshaw Carnighan and Bob hav(! moved to Shaw Air Force Base, Columbia, South Carolina for 2 years.

Ann Carter has been elected president of the Washington Metropolitan Area Alumnae Club.

Carolyn Owen vacationed in New England stopping to visit with Peggy Saunders who has moved to Boston where she is with the Record American and Boston Sunday Advertiser. Peggy has been to New York City on several assignments. She covered the men's fashion previews in Buck Hill Falls and the women's shows in NYC. Linda Holt Lilly has been elected president of the Richmond Chapter of Mortar Board Alumnae. Eddie is chief resident in the department of medicine at MCV. Brenda Netherwood Gibrall and George have bought a home on Hampshire Road in Richmond.

Nancy Curtis Wood is now Computer Support Manager with C & P Telephone Company in Richmond.

Diana Ryan Stivison and Jim will be going to Korea where Jim reports for duty in October.

Nancy Ussery Karam and husband, Al, are moving to Venezuela in August. Al has received a teaching position at the university, having completed work on his PhD in math. Nancy says they are taking with them only that which they can carry on the plane!

And she doesn't speak Spanish yet!

Maureen Goode now holds the title of Eligibility Supervisor with the Chesterfield Welfare Department. From Maureen I received the following news concerning two of our classmates. Astra Swingle Thornton and husband, Clay, are now living in Rochester, New York (address: 95 Lowden Lane). Clay continues his seminary training there. Jill Jones and her husband are now living in Boston. Her husband works for General Electric and was transferred from Phoenix. (Address: 52 Main Street, Apt. 4-L, Stoneham, Mass.).

Christa Merz is finishing up work on her masters in biology at U. of R. She plans to return to teaching in Henrico County in the fall.

Pat Rainwater Whitfield plans to teach kindergarten at Grove Avenue Church in the fall. She and Bill continue to sing in CAFUR (the local choral society under the direction of Dr. Erb.).

My husband and I spent two weeks camping in New England in July. I have also been taking a course in drug education in order to improve my teaching of this badly needed area of instruction. Suzanne Ivey and I will return to Brookland Junior High School in the fall, she in history and I in physical education.

I saw Lee Coleman at the tennis courts this summer. She is pleased with her banking position in Richmond and has travelled in the Caribbean. Lee reported that Maude Williams is still living in Northern Virginia and is fine.

This fall finds Gale Burrow, Judy Strauser and Pat Burton sharing an apartment in Charlottesville while all three attend graduate school. Gale will be in the School of Arts and Sciences studying for an M.A. in English, Judy in medical technology at the University of Virginia Hospital, and Pat in the School of Education in guidance working for an M. Ed. Graduate school appears to be popular with our class. Mary Lee Watson is at Clemson in math, Carole Waite is at the University of South Carolina in psychology, Alice Presson is at Penn State in Spanish, and Kathy Neal is in graduate school in Chapel Hill.

I ran into Frances Fowler at a Sunday matinee at the Mill Mountain Playhouse here. She'll be teaching at Huguenot Academy in Powhatan and will share an apartment with Marsha Carl in Richmond.

Several other members of our class are teaching in the Richmond area. Cheryl Blankenship teaches at Skipwith Elementary.

Nancy Bain teaches French at St. Catherine's, Linda Noell teaches English at Varina High School and Anne Allport is teaching physical education. Anne and Linda share an apartment.

Vickie Bowman is teaching high school math in Danville and says that she is pleased to have two geometry classes.

Nancy (Jarvis) Inge and husband, Cliff, are stationed at Fort Bragg, N. C., with orders to leave for Korea in December.

Lindsay Struthers stayed in Virginia after graduation to be in Nancye Caskey's wedding. Nancye and Joel are living in Washington state where Joel is in the army.

Lindsay is in graduate school in WinstonSalem, N. C. Sara Bridges Metz and Jerry are now living in Yokota, Japan, stationed with the Air Force. They plan to return to the states in 1973 after his tour of duty.

My summer was very busy. Carole Waite, Mary Lee Watson and I were bridesmaids in Betty Deans' wedding on June 19. Betty is now Mrs. Larry Witter and will be living in Ithaca, N. Y., for two years while Larry finishes vet school at Cornell. The day after the wedding I met Anne Allport at Dulles Airport, and we flew to Paris to join Ann Hodges, Mary Stuart Kinsey, Anne Green and about forty others for a month's tour of Europe. We had a fantastic time, but I don't think any of us want to see bread for a long while!

Ann Hodges and I have been in the process of hunting for jobs. Ann plans to be in Charlottesville, and I hope to be in Winston-Salem, N. C. Let me hear from all of you so that we can have more news in the Spring issue!

Editor's Comment his issue of your alumni magazine is perhaps the most important one you have ever received. The reason for that statement should be obvious. The questionnaire around which this issue is built is an impressive example of what can be accomplished by a group of alumni with a worthwhile goal in sight.

The more than 60 alumni and alumnae who have worked to make the questionnaire a reality have done so at considerable personal inconvenience. No less than 40 meetings have been held by subcommittees composed of representatives from each of the University's five major divisions. Many Saturdays have been devoted to the project and several evening meetings which began at 7 p.m. have continued until midnight.

Although much has been accomplished since the study began in January, the work is far from complete . Now the time has come for the majority to be heard. The questionnaire was designed to let you speak up about the University of Richmond and its alumni programs. As Otis Brown, the chairman of the alumni study group, has said elsewhere in this magazine, you now have an opportunity to formally present your opinions on many different aspects of the University. The results of the questionnaire will become the heart of an extensive report to be presented to Dr. Heilman.

All this activity is occurring because many alumni feel strongly that the alumni body (all 17,000 of us) can contribute a great deal to the planning for future greatness which is presently occurring at the University. Students and faculty have submitted lengthy reports in which they suggest ways in which the University can be improved. If alumni do not take advantage of this opportunity they will have missed a perfect chance to be heard when the University's leaders want to listen.

If you haven't already done so, please take the time necessary to answer the questions and mail them. What you have to say is important. Let us hear from you.
