May 6, 1937. Mr. Herbert Allen, Editor of THE WEB, University of Richmond, Virginia.

My dear Mr. Allen: Co1nplying with your request to select the best all-around athlete of the present senior class of Richmond College, I find myself confronted with a most difficult problem. If we should make the choice on the basis of the m.a ximum number of letters won, the honor would go to Alf red Dickinson who has won three in basketball, three in track and three in tennis, amounting to seven majors and two 1ninors since the third minor is equivalent to one major letter. On the basis of the most outstanding performance, the honor undoubtedly goes to William Lumpkin whose achievement in setting a record in the two-mile run in the Southern Conference Meet, in fourteen seconds less than the previous record, is the most outstanding achievement made by any University of Richn1ond athlete for a long period of time. Should we choose performance in the sport which contributes most to the athletic program of the U niversity, honors would be equally divided between Ed Schaaf and Mike West. -Both have served as captain of the football team and have won letters in baseball and boxing respectively, West being captain of the boxing team. He was chosen on the All-South Atlantic Team during his junior year. Thinking in terms of high-class performance in two or more sports, it is my opinion that the best athlete of the present senior class is Newton Jacobs who has been a regular on both the baseball and basketball teams for three years and has served as captain of both teams dut ing his senior year. During his three years of college playing he has pitched seventeen winning games against one loss. He has now completea his senior year pitching three no-hit games, a record that has been rarely achieved in college baseball in any section of the country. In basketball he was honored by' being chosen on the All-State Team. "Bucky" Jacobs is somewhat lacking in physique but_ has a competitive heart and I doubt that there is anyone on the campus, at present, that can come so near doing his best in each and every contest. Very truly yours, GFT:BE

GLENN F. THISTLETHWAITE, Director of Athletics.

9;ooteall THE

University of Richmond 's 5 l st year of Intercollegiate foo tball and its third under the guidance of Glenn Thistlethwaite was outstanding beca use of the fact that it opened its year with great possibilities and then w ent into only a fair season w hen an avalanche of in juries robbed the Spiders of their potentially g reat players. The pre-season practice tilt w ith Duke U niversity showed Richmond to have the makings of a powerful organization when they held W allace W ade's boys to three markers and scored once themselves in a two-hour practice session. As the season progressed the injury list grew, and many times during the year Coach Glenn wlls forced ¡to make ends ou t of tackles, and backs out of linemen. The season ended in a deadlock with four wins, fo ur losses, and two ties . T he traditional rivals of the Williamsburg institution were defeated on Thanksgiving D ay, and individual honors were garnered

by Ton1 Todd, who w on a tackle post on the All-State first team. Captain Mike West, guard, and Ed Schaaf, center, won spots on the econd tean1. Jack Sanford, towering sopho1nore end, tied for an end post on the first eleven . RICHMOND 6--APPRENTICE SCHOOL 0.

Richn10nd ' regular schedule v1as opened in Newport News when the Apprentice School Team played host to the Spiders in the first night ga1ne in the history of the U. of R. Bobby Vaughan registered the first tally of the year as the Spiders managed to down a stubborn, underrated group of shipbuilders, 6-0. The pidcr played only ~ traight football thruout the entire contest, and out-rushed the former college stars 127 yards to 86. Rich1nond imilarly co1npleted three passes for 3 7 yards, while their opponents failed to complete any of eight heaves. Coach Glenn ' t a1n evidenced a great offensive a nine first downs were tallied to Apprentice's two. The Red and Blue exhibited a great downfield march in the first quarter but were set back just when a score seemed inevitable by a bad pa f ron1 center which put an end to the drive. A similar march was started in the third quarter and was halted by a fift en-yard penalty. P ndl ton, in hi. fir t var ity gan1e, and the veteran Bill Robertson looked good for Richmond. RICHl\fOND 7-RANDOLPH-MACON 7

The pider of Rich1nond College, in their first collegiate football encounter of the 1936 season, met the impossible, a 7-7 tic with th Yellow Jackets of Randolph-Macon. Coach Thistlethwaite's backfield men were unable to execute the newly introduced . hift without the official finding fault and so five-yard penalties were inflicted frequently. Many times, great holes were opened for the hard-charging ophomore, Clyde Pendleton, but his gains went for naught when head-linesman Denton called back play after play. Thu penal tie al ng with the heartbreaking punt that traveled past Bill Robertson spelled disaster. Richmond made

their seven points early in the second quarter after a p ower drive that fea tured the hard plunges of Pendleton. The Jackets cored after Bair's atten1pt to catch the pass thrown by Paliscack was ruled good as a result of in terference by Bobby Vaughan. The ball was given to the Jackets on the Spider 1-yard line and on the next p lay Paliscack uncorked another pass to the Sophomore, M cFall, who took the ball standing up behind the goal line. The statistics tell the story better than words. Richmond gaining 12 first downs to the J ackets 2, the Spiders gave up 110 yards in penalties against Randolph-:i\facon's 5 and the Spider back outgained their opponent 15 0 yards to 5 5. The 1'faroon Eleven from Roanoke College invaded Richmond for the Spiders' third game of the season, and managed to outluck Coach Thistlethwaite's charges as the voodoo of penalties crept up when a sustained Spider drive seemed eminent. Richmond registered ten first downs to Roanoke's three, and similarly suffered ten penalties of seventy-five yards to the visitor's fo ur of only twenty yards. Offensive honors of the day went to Bobby Vaughan who carried the ball fifteen times for a net yardage of forty-five yard . V aughan likewise featured in a forty-yard jaunt when he intercepted W roniewicz's pass with three minutes of p lay left in the game. This last scoring threat w ent for naught as W roniewicz re taliated and intercepted Spears' pass on the twenty-five yard line just before the final whistle. "Chuch" Siddall attempted to rival his backfield brethren as he took in Sanford ¡s lateral on a pa f ron1 Robert on . Siddall fought his way for ten yards- Pendleton leading the interference- down to the M aroon thir ty-yard stripe. The usual penalty wac:; again forthcoming and Roanoke was again snatched from the defeat column by the prejudiced hand of fate .

FRANKLIN AND MARSHALL 13-RICHMO ND 0

"J u1nping

Joe" M dwick lived up to all predictions and led two sustained drives into Spider territory and then capitalized on th ir effort . It wa a thirty-two yard return of Sanford's punt early in the second quarter of the game that started Franklin and Marshall on a dri that \Va to go 58 yards and six points. He was aided by his runnjng halfback, Hummer, whose 15-yard slant off right tackl finally put the ball on the one-yard line. Lat in th la t quarter the pider made a real threat when Spears was rushed into the game to try his 1uck on passing when th ball h'1d con1 to re t on the Franklin and Marshall 17-yard line. His pass to Lawless was muft and the ball turned over to ranklin and Mar hall. From here the trong Diplomats staged a drive of eighty yards and seven points. Except for the two touchdown driv by the Diplomat and the one unsuccessful attempt on the part of the Spiders, the game was a hard fought d f n i battl with play centered between the thirty-yard stripes. The Spider line proved without a doubt to be as staunch as th n xt one 'lnd en th brilliant line play of Sponaugle and Santaniello could not lessen the greatness of such stars as the din1inutiv Ed chaff and Captain in place of Mike West who had received a neck injury just prior to the game. Along with haaf, Tom Todd play d a wonderful game. EMORY AND HENRY 6 - RICHMOND 20 With 'ln off n clicking for the fir t time in the current campaign and led by the surprisingly brilliant Sophomore, "Hebe" ~ p ac th pi r o rca1n the Wa p jinx to the tune of 20-6 ting. The boys from the west were never given a chance until th piders had n1arch d o er the1n for thirteen point . Looked upon a. a probabl tarter the night before, Spears not only got the assignment but came through in great style. Early in th fir t quart r, pear pa ed and ran the ball down to the Wa p nineteen-yar d line. From this point, Spears in two sucessi run ¡ carri d th ball o r. iddall n1ade the extra point. The Spiders were unable to make headway until late in the hst quart r wh n one n1ore pear tart d a drive featuring pa ses to Mundy, Marchant, and Sanford. These three boys, althou h Of hornor pro d their ability a real ball-hawk . Sanford taking the last pas over the goal for six more points and th n "' p ar: fail d th try for ~ tra p int. ithin thr play. aft r th kick-off th Wa p had :finally stung. They cored six points after a brilliant forty-yard run by Bark r aft r he and K gley had connected in two other play for perfect passes. Then it remained for the veteran, Bobby

Vaughan, to start the Spiders on their third touchdown drive. Taking the kick-off, he ran fifty-three yards before being halted down on the Wasp's twentyseven. Then Spears unlimbered his arm once more and a perfect strike was scored, Sanford taking the ball on the goal line. Vaughan added the extra point. Thus for the first time, the shift introduced by Coach Thistlethwaite showed to advantage.

V. M. I. 20-RICHMOND 0 The ardor of Homecoming was dampened son1ewhat as V. M. I's Keydets turned the tables after five long years and crashed the Spider's Web to win 2 0-0. Richmond w·as in hot water from the opening whistle. A stiff-blowing north wind carried Ed Schaaf's center pass over the kicker's head, and si1nilarly blackjacked the Blue-clad lads' kicking which aided the Keydets in their first score. The combination of a bad snap back and the wind, caused Pendleton's kick to be partially blocked and Buttingham, V. M. I. end, scooped up the bounding ball on the thirteen-yard line to score unheeded. The Keydets added ·two more in the second half via the air lanes to bring the day's scoring to an end. The Spider forward wall played a great game and

smeared the great Treziach on n1any a running play. The ''Z' ' man carried the ball twelve times for a net gain of only twelve yards. Ironically enough statistics show Richmond to have gained five first downs to V. M. I's four. The game was fierce from the start and Spider followers saw their hopes die as Marchant, Stoneburner, and Mundy were carried off the field in turn. There is no end of praise for the great work of Captain West and Tom Todd in setting back the invading backs. The score is not a just estimate of the game.

V. P. I. 20-RICHMOND 7 On the Spiders ' third trip the Gobblers of V. P. I. proved to be too tough to handle and the proteges of Coach Glenn Thistlethwaite met a 20-7 defeat. Both teams played even in the first quarter and V. P. I. wa not able · to penetrate the Richmond defense until late in the second quarter after some fine running by Sodaro and Mel Henry's passes began to click. It was at this point that the Spiders weakened and the Gobblers scored. Then the Spiders uncorked three beautiful passes, the last one connecting from Spear to Robertson for a beautiful catch on the one-yard line. Robertson then scored when he received another pass in the end zone for a touchdown. These two particular plays brought forth much praise from the Blacksburg Insti tution. V. P. I. predominated in the second half and garnered thirteen more points while the Spiders were held scoreless. 12 -RICHMO D 0 Despite the growing string of inj uri c.:s, the Spid ers MARYLAND

played their b st hall of the sea. on but still Marylan f. great back, Bill uckey. on could not be denied. Twice he brok 路 loos 路 and twice he ran sixty-. ix yards to sore. Ri hmond earned its third victory of the 1ear and showc:d its scoring punch when the Tigers of Death Valley were defeated at ity "tadiu1n. The Red and Blue c.1n1c: from behind a three-point deficit and punched across two touchdowns in the second period as "I- Iebe" 'pears unli1nbered his passing arn1 and running legs to aid n aterially in the pider victory. Th路 Tigers went into an arly lead, as Charnbers rcco <;:red Kiel pinski 's f u1nhle on Richmond's eighteen, and White pla c:-kicked a fi Id goal from the twentytwo-va rd Iinc. Richn1ond mad a con1 back ju t a the fir. t quarter was ending, Schaaf intercepted Berni r's pass an I pears on the next play ca1nper d untouched to s ore. 'iddal l ad i 路d the extra point. The boys from Death Valley didn't stand a chance f ron1 then on during the re t of the ga1ne a. the Richn1ond lin . 1nothered the Tiger ground attack an I ru, bed Bernier and White' passing. RJCHMOND

The Tigers showed a net yardage loss of 12 yards for 31 rushing plays. Spears was easily the outstanding star of the game as his passing and running kept the Spider attack at a rolling peak. RICHMOND 6-WILLIAM AND MARY

0

The final game of the year was featured with the steady play of all the veterans- Captain Mike West, Bill Robertson, The Todd boys, "Hoss" Walton, Neely Godsey and Ed Schaaf-all of whom were 1naking their last bow to Richmond fame. To Bill Robertson goes all the honor of putting the game under the Spider victory column, as the Petersburg boy lent the necessary spark in the last quarter and then scored on Spears' pass. For three quarters both teams tossed away many a scoring opportunity and except for brilliant defensive work of Ed Schaaf and the Spider line, the game showed little else. Toward the middle of the last quarter, Robby was ent in, and an in tant change in the team was to be noticed. Bill signalled for a fair catch on the Indian thirty-two, and f ron1 that point the Spiders drove on to a touchdown. The ball went to the five-yard stripe in an unbroken tnarch where three plays fail ed to get it over. Robert on took the snap from center, reversed it to pears and then went over the goal line to catch the winning touchd()\\'n pas .

T AM, known locally a the "Five Iron Men," played an unusually strong schedule which \\'a climaxed by a Spider win over the strong Washington and Lee combine which later w nt on to win the outhern Conference crown. The Spiders, playing their first season under th outh rn onference literally fought their way to a bid to the tourney in aleioh. aptain Bu ky" Jacob and his brother Pete were honored with berths on the All- tat tea111. '" h Pitt xp rienced difficulty in ecuring a capable running mate for Captain Jacobs. r t at tin1 s he etned to ettle thi question and place a smooth running combination on th floor nd 0111e through with flying color . But probably the most significant develop111 nt wa the va t itnprovement of tate oppo ition. Such teams as V. M. I., Virginia, R,111 i lph-Ma on and V. P. I. how d va t improvement. The Keydets achieved quite a 11

success in upsetting the Spiders, Virginia produced shots that would be ordinarily impossible, and V. P. I. took the Spiders into camp only after the latter had secured a place in the select eight at Raleigh. Without a doubt, the most thrilling play of the season came in the last second of play in the Maryland game. Richmond, trailing by two points, lost the ball to the Old Liners and the game seemed over when Pete Jacobs broke through and took the ball with him for two points. As the ball sank the game ended, sending the game on into an extra period. Richmond won in a walkaway from then on, 51 to 40.
