CR._ obert CR._y land A.M. , D.D. President (1832-1866) ~HE trustees of the infant institution that was ~ to grow into the Uni-versity of Richmond called as its first president a young Virginian , a graduate of Columbian College and pastor in Lynchburg.

Under his efficient administration the Virginia Baptist Seminary, which opened on July 4, 1832, at "Spring Farm" with one teacher and nine students , was mo-ved in 1834 to the present site of the Law School, was chartered as Richmond College in 1840, and by 1861 had acquired equipment, endowment, a f acuity , a student body and a group of graduates that ga-ve it rank among the better colleges of its time.

After the de-vastation of the War , Dr. Ryland felt that the new beginning should be guided by younger hands, and resigned in 1866 to engage in educational work in Kentucky. A tablet on Ryland Hall records the appreciation of the Trustees of the Uni-versity for " his tireless energy and successful de-votion to Chris tian Education ."

Dr. Jones entered what is now Richmond College in 1839, where he stayed three years; he then went to the University of Virginia and finally to William and Mary College, where he graduated in 1844. From then until his death he served in a religious and educational capacity. Most of his life was dedicated to

preaching the Gospel, serving in Norfolk about twenty-seven years, broken by a short interval in which he held the presidency of Richmond College and a longer period as a pastor in Nash-ville, Tenn.

Dr. Jones was vice-president of the Southern Baptist Convention for several sessions, and at one time vicepresident of the Board of Trustees of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. He took control of Richmond College when the endowment had been wiped out and the buildings practically ruined by the War between the States, and helped develop the College into one of the leading universities of the South.

1849 Bennet Puryear was elected to the chair in Richmond College. He was twenty-three years old, had graduated from RandolphMacon College, and had pursued further studies at the Uni-versity of Virginia. When Richmond College was reorganized after the War between the States, Professor Puryear was the only member of the ante-bell um f acuity who returned.

As Chairman of the Facuity from 1869 he was the administrati-ve officer of the institution, except for an inter-val of three years, until his retirement in 1895.

His -vigorous personality, genial disposition, and gift for teaching made an enduring impression on his students. Dr. Puryear was a pioneer in applying Chemistry to agriculture, and was deeply interested in educational and economic questions. As author of a brilliant series of articles on these subjects he had a large influence throughout Virginia.

This being the Centennial year, Alpha Delta makes this announcement as to its organization, purpose, and aim. There has always been a need for some organization to draw the ministerial students into a closer union, especially at Richmond College, an institution which was founded for the purpose of training ministers. The qualities which are necessary to make a successful minister are in danger of being destroyed in a large un iversity, unless a means of preserving them is provided. Not all who claimed to be ministerial students lived up to the high calling of a minister, and for these reasons in 1922-'23 we were organized into a club, and in 1927-'28 we were recognized as a local fraternity. The purpose is to select from the many the more consecrated and serious-minded and to bring them into a spiritual and social union. When Alpha Delta men go out into the harvest field after college clays are over, they know there are a few loyal, devoted, and consecrated believers in the principles of the Christian faith. The members are urged to take an active part in all college activities and to promote a spirit of fellowship between the ministerial students and the student body at large. It now occupies the home of the late Dr. George ·w. McDaniel, which commands a beautiful view of the lake and college campus. Former members of Alpha Delta are now engaged in graduate study at various feminaries throughout the country, and not a few of them occupy pulpits of prominence.

Dec. 17, 1837; died Feb. 4, 1897. Prof essor Harris graduated from Richmond College in 1856, and after teaching a year he entered the Uni versity of Virginia , where he receiYed the M.A. degree in 1860. He entered the Confederate Army in 1861, after teaching for a year. When Richmond College was reopened after the war he was elected Professor of Greek and German. In a few years he was relieYed of the German and continued as Pro fessor of Greek until his acceptance of the chair of Polemic Theology and Biblical Introduction in the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1895.

He was editor and writer for some religious and educational publications . His life work was prominently that of a teacher. For this he had a special aptitude _. and although an ordained minister he felt that his field was in th e classroom .

Varsity • The 1931 football season is an excell ent exa mple of how a Spider team can fight and never give up if the students loyally support it to the very end.

• When Coac_h Dobson issued a call for fall football practice, seven veterans returned to work hard to be in readiness for the opening game of the season, with Virginia Military Institute.

He made no predictions, but set to work hammering into shape the 1931 Spider football team. The development of excellent school spirit among the students was largely responsible for the magnificent fighting of the Spiders on the gridiron. The fact that Richmond lost five out of nine games presents the statistics of the season, but does not, by any means, give any id ea of the valiant work of the Red and Blue warriors.

• On September 26, the Spider team journeyed to Lexington to meet the Kcydet s of V. M . I., and when the final whistle b'ew Richmond was on the top side of the 7-0 score. It was a hard-fought game, neither team being able to cross their opponent's goal line unti l late in the fourth quarter, when "Turkey" Chaltain snatched a Keydet pass out of the air and ran twenty-fiv e yards through a broken field for a touchdown.

Both teams had several chances to score earlier in the game, but the lines held in the pinches and took the ball on downs. Captain Fugate and Per lowski p layed an excellent game in the forward wall , as did all of the line . Joyce and Chaltain were outstanding in the backfield.

• On the following Saturday, the Wasps of Emory and Henry came to Richmond and handed the Spiders a defeat by the score of 13-7. The Red and B lue team started off in grand style, receiving a punt on their own thirty-six-yard line, and carried the ba ll in six plays to score a touchdown . Henry p lunged for six yards to score this touchdown, and Joyce kicked the extra point. Emory and Henry recovered a punt on the Spider ten-yard line and then made the touchdown.

The final score came in the fourth quarter, when the vVasps completed a pass for thir teen yards to end the scoring.

• Richmond then traveled north to meet the strong Cornell team, which they held to the score of 27-0.

The Spid ers were unable to entirely check the much heavier Red and vVhite team, but prevented them from scoring in the last half. Daley, playing his first varsity game, was outstanding on the offense, but the defensive work of the Richmond line in the last ha lf was responsible for the good showing of the Red and Blue.

• The Spiders, on October 17, went south to play Furman, but Furman easily defeated them by the score 3+-6. The Red and Blue warriors, as in the preceding game, played much better in the last ha lf and he!d Furman to seven points , while Chaltain intercepted a pass and ran sixty yards behind excellent interference for the only Spider score of the day.

Baseball, 1931 With only three lettermen back from the championship team of the previous year, Coach Dobson was faced with the difficult task of building a team around th e nucleus of Sherman, Vial, and Beale.

It was indeed a severe loss to the team and a great disappointment to the student body when it was announced that Henry Dohrman, Captain-elect of the 193 J teeam, would not be able to play because of a football injury. Although the chances for a winning t~;,m looked extremely dark, the fine spirit which is cha,·acteristic of all Spicier teams was not lacking.

Randolph Macon was the first team to be met, and the result was a 9-2 victory for the Spiders. With Darden holding the Yellow Jacket hitters to five hits, the Dobsonites amassed a safe lead. Despite the fact that it was the initial contest for both nines , the game was marked by unusuall y good fielding. The next game on the schedule was with the Medical College of Virginia, from which the Spiders emerged with a I I-5 victory. Darden and Perlowski divided the pitching honors and succeeded in keeping the Medico's hits well scattered.

On April 21 the Richm'.Jnders journeyed to Death Valley and were taken into cam·) by the Hampden Sydney nine to th e tune of 8-2. Although Richmond outhit their ancient rivals, Humphries , the Tiger pitcher, kept the hits well scattered.

William and l\!Iary was the next foe and they handed th e Spiders a 12-3 defeat. White, the Indian pitcher , showed excellent form and was ably backed up by

Captain Bill Scott. Sherman was outstanding for the Richmondites.

The I aval Academy baseball nine evened up matters for their defeat of the previous year by handing the Spiders a I 3-4 defeat. The Sailors showed real strength with the willow and their pitcher , Davenport, allowed Richmond but eight scattered hits.

The Spiders next met the Hampden-Sidney Tigers at Westhampton and won an exciting game from the Death Valley boys by the score of 7-4. Perlowski held the Tigers in check while his team mates amassed a good lead. Gates and Vial were accountable for half of Richmond hits.

On May J 4 the Spiders won from Randolph Macon for the second time , having defeated them in the first game of the season. Darden held the Ashland nine to eight hits and was backed up in fine style by his team mates. Eel Perlowski led the Spiders at bat with three fine hits out of four trips to . the bat.

V. M. I. won a 9-2 victory over Richmond by an extra inning rally after th ~ Spide· shad held the Cadets to two all for nine innings. Perlow ski allowed V. M. I. only nine hits and kept things well under control until the fatal tenth fram e.

Th e last game of the season was with William and Mary, which was won by the Indians by the score of 6-2. Th e cohorts of Coach Kellison amassed an early lead which the fighting Spiders were unable to overcome.

The seas'.Jn, while not so successful from the standpoint of gam~s won and lost, was characterized by the never-say-die spirit of Spider teams.

Track, 1931 With only two letter men returning to the track squad the outlook for the season was the darkest for the Spiders in many years. In spite of this handicap, like true Spiders, the: candidates worked hard to give their best to old Richmond.

The season opened with a meet with Washington and Lee on the home cinder path .

Although Richmond did their utmost , they went down before the General trackmen, 10328. Richmond then journeyed to Hampden-Sydney and defeated the Tigers, 84-42, for their only victory of the year. The Spiders proved too strong for their ancient rivals. As a result of this meet several men on the squad made their first letters.

The Red and Blue tracksters next met th~ strong William and Mary team at Williamsburg. The Indians were more than a match for Richmond and handed her an overwhelming defeat of 109-17. The only first place that Richmond obtained was the result of a beautiful race run by ((Speedy " Vial in the quarter-mile .

The Conference Meet was held in Williamsburg, with four teams, Richmond, William and Mary, Lynchburg, and Hampden-Sydney competing. The Indians had the strongest team, winning first place easily. Lynchburg came second and Richmond scoring eighteen points was third.

The 1931 track season was very disastrous, but the prospects for next year are much better. Losing only four letter men, Captain Onesty, Broaddus, Squire, and Dickerson, we have a strong nucleus to fall back upon. The training and experience obtained during the 1931 season will be very valuable this year. With the addition of some outstanding men from the freshman team , the outlook for a more successful season is considerabl y brighter than in the last few years.

"BOATWRIGHT is an alumnus of Rich~ mond College of the Class of 1888, and has been a member of its f acuity continuously since 1887, as Assistant Professor and Professor of Modern Languages and President. During the sessions 18891890 and 1892 he was a graduate student at the Universities of Halle, Leipsig, and Paris. He assumed his duties as president in January, 1895, at the age of twenty-six, and has since served in that capacity with marked fidelity and distinction.

Perhaps the most outstanding event of his administration was the removal of the College from the city of Richmond to Westhampton and the transf ormation of Richmond College into the modern University of Richmond. To him must be given the credit for the vision which conceived and the wise leadership which accomplished.

AR be it from us to overwork that already trite expression of the vaudeville stage, "Just one big, happy family," but, search as we may, no other words can we find to express adequately the interrelations of the student body at T. C. Williams.

When we of the Senior Class entered the Law School, we had in mind a study which was entirely different from that which we actually did pursue.

Under the kindly guidance of the faculty, whose patience seemed unlimited, we waded through the mazes of our first-year courses in a desperate effort to absorb just a little of that enormous mass of learning.

Deep into the ages we plunged, unearthing Lord Coke and Bracton, Littleton and Blackstone, and making an uncertain and beclouded mental simple, joint tenancies, courtesy attack on the ancient Common Law of property-fee rights-law based on customs and traditions even more ancient-"from a time when the memory of man runneth not to the contrary."

While there have been no cataclysmic changes in policy or student life during our sojourn at T. C. Wililams, we cannot honestly describe the course of events as monotonous. During those three years we have seen our school's standards steadily rise, until now they meet with the approval of the most stringent law associations. Further , at the beginning of our second year, we saw Mr. Doubles take over the reins as Dean.

By this time we had acquired a fair idea of the proper method of studying law.

Then we experienced a great sorrow, shared with us by the whole University-the loss of a great man and a great teacher, a man loved without exception by the entire student body, a man whose absence can never be fully compensated-Dr. Walter Scott McNeil!.

Fortunately, our lives were not wholly untouched by the molding hand of this experienced educator.

Finally, there came the violent upheaval of our minds when we realized that preparations for the taking of the state bar examination were in order. Weeks of intensive study, and coaching by Mr. Chichester , and then the day arrived when, with fear and trembling, we stood in front of the House of Delegates Chamber, waiting to match our wits with the state bar examiners. Two days of desperate writing and thinking and then-another task finished. Afterwards, a social affair in honor of the students who took the exam; extreme nervousness and apprehension, and finally the good news -every senior had passed! What excitement and joy when we realized that we were lawyers at last!

This was the climax to our three years of study in a graduate school-three years which have been highly interesting and satisfying. Numerous socials and dances have made light many of the moments of our careers here, and it is with deep regret that we anticipate leaving our dear old Alma Mater, and face our transition from students to practicing attorneys. . . . . . . . . . . . .

And years hence, when we view our lives retrospectively and remember our days in Law School, we shall let our thoughts linger caressingly over three years which were all too short, and remember this period as one of the brightest spots in our careersthe capstone to that mental edifice which we call-EDUCATION.
