ANNOUNCEMENTS The Sunimer Session of the University of Richmond covers a period of six weeks. Various courses are offered designed to meet the needs of the following : 1. Teachers wishing to obtain credii: toward the Collegiate Professional, the Collegiate or Special Certificates.

2. Teachers desiring to renew their certificates by the successful completion of two college courses in a summer school.

3. College students wishing to remove conditions on their work of the preceding session, or to gain additional credits toward a degree.

4. Premedical students, desiring to meet the standard mediical college requirements in General and Organic Chemistry, Physics, and Biology.

5. High School students wishing special opportunity to complete college entrance requirements .

Entrance R equirements-During the summer session students may be admitted without formal entrance requirements to any cour se which they are competent to pursue with profit . Each individual entrant must be certified to after consideration by a Committee on Entrance. Students who wish college credit must present to the registrar at entrance evidence of high school graduation.

Cred·its-As in the regular session , to obtain credit fo11any course, examination is necessary . The dates for these final tests will be July 25th and 26th .

No credit will be given in any course to a student absent from class more than three times. Owing to the shortness of the term, no excuses can be granted for absences.

A ll courses of college grade are given credit toward the various college degrees. These degrees and the requirements for them are clearly set forth in the regulnr sessional bulletin.

Number of Classes-The normal amount of work which a student may take is three courses. By taking lecture and laboratory courses four hours credit may be made in the Science courses.

Registration-Students should register on Monday, June 16th, in Room J of the Administration Building. Late registration is a serious hindrance to efficient organization of classes.

After registration has been completed, no student is permitted to change from one course to another without the approval of the Director. No such change will be allowed after June 19th.

The first 'assembling of classes will occur Tuesday morning, June 17th. Consult bulletin board for schedule and room location. Class rooms will be in the Administration Building.

15.00 Larw Department-The T. C. Williams School of Law is located at 601 N. Lombardy Street, in the city.

Room Rent and Board-Section A of Jeter Hall will be used as the dormitory for women; sections C, D and E for men. This hall is located just a short distance from the Cafeteria and Administration Building. Each room will be furnished with bed, bureau, table and chairs. Light a•nd janitor service are furnished.

Beel linen, towels, etc., must be supplied by the students. The cost for the session will be: Double Room, $10.00 each person; Single Room, $20.00. Rooms may be occupied June 16th. If .clesirecl, rooms and board may be secured in the village near the University campus.

Board is furnished on the cafeteria plan, as during the regular session. The regular management is in charge and the usual meal hours observed.

Baggage-The University of Richmond has an arrangement with the Richmond Transfer Company by which baggage is delivered to any designated point on the campus at fifty cents per piece. To take advantage of this agreement , it is necessary that one inform the Transfer Company he is to be a student in the U niversity of Richmond.

Comm ittee on Appoi ntm ents-There is an established Bureau of Appointments at the University of Richmond. It is designed to assist graduates to be satisfactorily placed in the school system of this and other States. This committee will freely render assistance to anyone desiring to make use of its knowledge and facilities.

S tate R eading Course-By arrangement with the Certification Department of the State Board of Education, examinations on the Reading Course offered as a means of renewing State Teachers' Certificates may be taken here on the regular examination clays.

The right is reserved not to organize any class unless there are as many as six applicants.

The summer . courses in Biology are designed primarily to meet the needs of pre-medical students. Biology Sl and Biology S3, or Biology Sl and Biology S2 will satisfy requirements in this subject for entrance to standard medical schools.

BIOLOGY Sl (a) General Zoology.-A survey of the animal kingdom. One lecture daily. With Biology Sl (b), this course is equivalent to one-half of Biology 1 as offered in the regular winter session. Credit, with Biology Sl (b), two hours. 12 :00; Science Hall. (b) General Zoology Laboratory.-A laborator y study of type animals to accompany Biology Sl (a). Two hours daily.

BIOLOGY S2 (a) Comparative Anatomy of Vertebrates.-An intensive study of the vertebrates, with dissection of examples of the chief classes. One lecture daily. With Biology S2 (b), this course is equivalent to one-half of Biology 2 as offered in the regular winter session. Credit, with Biology S2 (b), two hours. 9 :00; Science Hall. BIOLOGY S3 (a) Botany.-A study of the developmental morphology of a series of twenty-two plant types. One lecture daily.

BIOLOGYS4 (a) Plant Taxononiy.-A study of the wild plants growing in the campus vicinity, together with the characteristics of the principal groups of ferns and flowering plants . ( Field Botany).

With Biology S4 ( b), this course is onehalf of Biology 4, as offered in the regular college year.

Credit, with Biology S4 (b). Two hours. Time by arrangement. (b) Taxonomy Laboratory.-To accompany Biology S4 (a). Two hours daily, spent mainly in the field or woods.

BIOLOGYSS (a) Plant Histology.-A study of the finer internal structures, the cells and tissues of plants, and their arrangement in the plant body. ( Pharmaceutical Botany).

With Biology SS (b) , this course is one-half of Biology 4, as offered in the regular college year. Credit , with Biology SS (b) , two hours. Time by arrangement. (b) Plant Histology Laboratory.-To accompany Biology SS (a). Two hours daily.

BIOLOGYS6 (a) Plant Physiology.-A study of the functions, processes, vital phenomena and behaviour of plants, and of their relation to external influences. One lecture daily. With Biology S6 (b) , this course is one-half of Biology 6, as offered' in the regular college year. Credit with laboratory , two ho11rs; without laboratory, one hour. Time by arrangement. Chemistry PROFESSOR McCRACKAN CHEMISTRYSl (a) General Chemistry.-A review of the fundamental facts, theories and principles with especial emphasi s on the more difficult parts of the subject. For students who have had a course in General Chemistry and who wish to

(b) General Chem,istry Laboratory.-For students needing additional laboratory work in General Chemistry to meet the requirements of professional or technical schools. CHEMISTRY S2 (a) Organic Cheniistry.-The paraffin series.

With Chemistry S2 (b), this course meets the entrance requirements in Organic Chemistry of the standard medical colleges. One lecture daily. Credit, one hour. 8 :00; Science hall. (b) Organic Chemistry Laboratory.-To accompany Chemistry S2 (a).

Two or four hours daily. 9 :00-11 :00, or 9 :00-1 :00; Science Hall. Credit, one or two hours.

CHEMISTRYS3. Anal~)'ticalChem,istry.-Special work in quantitative analysis to meet the purposes of the individual student.

In courses Sl (b), S2 (b), and S3, a contingent deposit of five dollars must be made to cover excessive breakage.

This will be returned at the end of the course after the cost of breakage has been deducted.

Economics PROFESSOR GARIS ECONOMICS Sl. The Principles of Economics.-This course is designed to give a comprehensive knowledge of some of the underlying principles of Economics. Especial attention will be given to the Economic Development of the United States, Production, Consumption, Value, Price, Monopoly and Business Organization.

Problems explaining the determination of Market and Monoply Price will be required as well as the preparation of a number of business balance sheets. One hour daily. Credit, one hour. 11 :00; Room K, Administration Building.

EcoNOMICS S2. The Principles of Econoniics Continued.-This course is a continuation of the work outlined in Economics 1.

It will be confined mainly to a discussion of Distribution, i. e., Rent, ·wages, Interest, Profits. It is expected also to give some time to the study of the Tariff and problems involved in International Trade.

EcoNOMICS S3. Money and Banking.-This course is a study of the Monetary and Banking History of the United States, with especial attention given to the National Banking and Federal Reserve Systems. The Quantity Theory of Money will be considered in its application to past and present conditions.

The latter part of this course will be devoted to the Principles of Foreign Exchange and causes which have led to the present condition of commercial rates. One hour daily. Credit, one hour. 10 :00; Room K, Administration Building.

Education PROFESSORPRINCE PROFESSOR ----EDUCATIONSl. Psychology for Teachers.-An application of the general principles of psychology to education. Human behavior will be discussed from the point of view of its origin and growth. Capacities, tendencies and instincts of man will be studied in so far as they throw light on some of the problems of educational practice. Lectures, reports and discussions. One hour daily. EDUCATIONS2. Principles of Teaching.-A treatment of teaching Methods, with emphasis placed on secondary school problems.

EDUCATIONS4. History of Education.-In this course the history of educational progress and practice in the United States will be presented rather than the development of educational theories. One hour daily. Credit, one hour. 11 :00; Room J, Administration Building.

EDUCATION SS. Teaching English in High Schools.-This course will aim to be equally suggestive to teachers in junior and standard high schools. The teaching of both literature and composition will be treated. One hour daily. Credit, one hour. 12 :00; Room J, Administration Building.

English PROFESSORHANDY PROFESSORGARWOOD E NGLISH SL English Literature.-A general survey of the literature from the beginnings to the present, with emphasis placed upon the literary leaders of the various centuries.

E NGLISH S2. Advanced Composition.-Theme writing based on specimens of exposition, description, and narration.

E NGLISHS4. American Literature.-Studies in the chief American poets, with extensive parallel reading in the prose writers, following a rapid survey of the Colonial and Revolutionary periods. One hour daily; credit, one hour. 9 :00; Room J, Administration Building.

ENGLISH S6. The Modern N ovel.-Beginning with Meredith and Hardy, a survey of the we11known novelists both in England and America will be conducted. At least two typical novels will be fully analysed in class. Lectures and parallel reading .

ENGLISH S7. ·Oral Interpretation of Literature.~Selected portions of prose and poetry will constitute the material for this course, the aim of which is to develop effective expression in reading, in the public address and in dramatics.

Teachers and others interested in anv form of dramatic art will find this course helpful. The work is entirely of a practical nature and, if time permits, scenes from certain plays will be presented by members of the class. Lectures, reports and readings. ENGLISH S8. Modern Drama .- This course will consist of a study of modern plays by both American and Continental dramatists, with special emphasis upon Ibsen, Shaw, Pinero , and Eugene O'Neil. The two reference books most useful are Chandler's Aspects of Modern Drama, and Lewisohn's The Modern Drama. Lectures and parallel reading. College Algebra.-A course designed to follow the work of a good high school, beginning with quadratic equations, and including such subjects as the progressions, permutations and combinations, mathematical induction, binomial theorem, inequalities, logarithms, theory of equations, and infinite series. MATHEMATICSS2. Solid Geometry.-A brief study of certain portions of plane geometry will be made, after which solid geometry will be taken up and completed. One hour daily.

MATHEMATICSS3. Plane Trigonometry.-The subject is approached from the practical side, problems being solved at first by graphical methods, and afterwards computed by means of trigonometrical formulae and mathematical tables.

MATHEMATICS SS. Pharmaceutical Mathematics.-This course is designed to give a thorough and comprehensive knowledge of the mathematics embraced in the curricula of pharmacy schools. Special consideration is given to the different systems of weights and measures used in pharmacy; and to the calculations involved in the compounding of prescriptions. manufacture of pharmaceuticals and assaying of drugs. 9 :0011 :00; Room G, Administration Building.

Physics PROFESSORLOVING PHYSICS SS (a) A Course in General College Physics, Mechanics , Properties of Matter, Heat, Light, Electricity and Magnetism.

With Physics SS (b), this course will satisfy the pre-medical requirements in standard medical schools. The combined course will also give good preparation to prospective teachers of high school Physics.

Embraces quantitative experiments with high grade instruments in the subjects enumerated under SS (a). Open only to persons taking SS (a), or to those who have had its equivalent. The Library occupies the southern wing of Ryland Hall. The interior is panelled in oak, and the bookcases arranged in alcove plan. It contains about twenty-five thousand volumes, not including pamphlets, arranged and catalogued by the Dewey System.

The most recent and useful bibliographical aids are proviclecl, and the best periodicals and reviews, daily and weekly papers are currently received. As a depository of the United States Government, the Library acquires annually hundreds of publications especially valuable for reference in Social and Political Science. the drudgery of class work oramarily so trying during the hot weather period.

In its suburban situation , the Summer School would appear to the casual observer more a summer resort than an educational institution. The temperature of the campus always is several degrees lower than that of the neighboring city and the buildings, being constructed almost wh olly of brick, are cool and comfortable except in extremely hot weather.

The beautiful lake on the campus, offers unusual facilities for boating and swimming, while the picturesque James River nearby calls to the student who loves the great outdoors, offering opportunities for fishing, camping, and boating parties.

Profe ssors and students mingle freely on the campus after the fashion of a summer colony. .Everybody comes to know everybody else and a delightful comradeship and freemasonry is developed that adds a social distinction to the school impossible to instituti ons where there is a large attendance. The summer school soon becomes as one large family.

The proximity of the school to the historic city of Richmond affords an education in itself. Every street is freighted with the romance of the making of a Nation. There are the giant industrial plants, the State Library, the Capital, the Medical College, the literary shrines-magic with the spirit of a Poe, a Thompson, a Bagby,-the monuments, the muesums.

Students interested in history, business administration, government, sociology, literature, will find in Richmond almost unparalleled opportunities for study and observation.

It is the policy of the director of the summer school to aid students in their efforts to see the things worth while in and about Richmond. Points of interest are discussed in the weekly assemblies and expeditions to the battlefields with members of the faculty are offered. This prevents the hap-hazard and illogical wanderings into which students who are comparative strangers to Richmond , naturall y would fall. A six weeks' residence in the midst of these scenes under the direction of men and women who know Richmond, is worth immeasurably more than the mere transient and hurried sojourn of the tourist.
