Announcements The Summer Session of the University of Richmond covers a period of six weeks. Various courses are offered designed to meet the needs of the following: r. Teachers wishing to obtain credit toward the Collegiate Certificate or Special Certificates.

2. Teachers desiring to renew their certificates by the successful completion of two college courses in a summer school.

3. College students wishing to remove conditions on their work of the preceding term , or to gain additional credits toward a degree.

4. Premedical student s, desiring to meet the standard mediical college requirements in General and Organic Chemistry, Physics, and Biology.

High School students wishing special opportunity to complete college entrance requirements.

Entrance Requirements: During the summer session students may be admitted without formal entrance requirements to any course which they are competent to pursue with profit. Each individual entrant must be certified to after consideration by a Committee on Entra nce. Students who wish college credit must present to the registrar at entrance evidence of high school graduation.

Credits: As in the regular session, to obtain credit for any course, examination is necessar y. The elates for these final tests will be July 26th and 27th.

No credit will be given in any course to a student absent from class more than three times. Owing to the shortness of the term, no excuses can be granted for absences.

All courses of college grade are given credit toward the various college degrees. These degrees and the requirements for them .are clearly set forth in the regular sessional bulletin.

Number of Classes: The normal amount of work which a student may take is three courses. In the Pre-medical Department, one science class with the accompanying laboratory constitutes a full session's work.

Registration: Students should register on Friday and Saturday, June 15th and 16th, in Room J of the Admini tration Building. Late registration is a serious hindrance to efficient organization of classes.

After registration has been 'completed, no student is permitted to change from one course to another without the approval of the Director. No such change will be allowed after June 20th.

The first assembling of classes will occur Monday morning, June 18th. Consult bulletin board for schedule and room location. Class rooms will be in the Administration Building.

Room Rent and Board: Section D of Jeter J-fall will be used as the dormitory for women; sections B and C for men. This hall is located just a short distance from the Cafeteria and Administration Building. Each room will be furnished with bed, bureau, table and chairs. Light and janitor service are furnished.

Bed linen, towels, etc., must be supplied by the students. The cost for the session will be: Double Room, $ro.oo each person; Single Room, $20.00. Room may be occupied June 15th.

Board is furnished on the cafeteria plan, as during the regular session. The regu lar management is in charge and the usual meal hours observed.

Post -office and Telegraph Address: The post-office address is University of Richmond, Va. The Telegraph Address is Richmond, Va. Baggage: The University of Richmond has an arrangement with the Richmond Transfer Company by which baggage is delivered to any designated point on the campus at fifty cents per piece. To take advantage of this agreement, it is necessary that one inform the Transfer Company he is to be a student in the U niversity of Richmond.

Have all baggage delivered at Jeter Hall.

Book-Store: The sale of books and conduct of the college post-office are both under the direction of a representative of Hunter & Co. Prompt attention and efficient service are thus assured.

Co111111ittee on AjJpoint111c11ts: There is an established Bureau of Appointments at the University of Richmond.

It is designed to assist graduates to be satisfactorily placed in the school system of this and other States. This committee will freely render assistance to anyone desiring to make use of its knowledge and facilities.

S talc Reading Course: By arrangement with the Certification Department of the State Board of Education, examinations on the Reading Course offered as a means of renewing State Teachers' Certificates may be taken here on the regular examination clays.

Biology Sr and Biology S3, or Biology Sr and Biology S2 will satisfy requirements in this subject for entrance to standard medical schools.

BIOLOGYSr (a) General Zoology. A survey of the animal kingdom. One lecture daily. ·with Biology Sr (b), this course is equivalent to one-half of Biology r as offered in the regular winter session. ECONOMICS PROFESSORGARIS EcoNOMICS SI. The Principles of Economics. This course is designed to give a comprehensive knowledge of some of the underlying principles of Economics. Especial attention will be given to the Economic Development of the United States, Production, Consumption, Value, Price, Monopoly and Business Organization.

Problems explaining the determination of Market and Monoply Price will be required as well as the preparation of a number of business balance sheets. One hour daily. Credit, one hour. r r :oo; Room K, Administration Building.

EcoNoMrcs S2. The Principles of Economics Continued.

This course is a continuation of the work outlined in Economics I. It will be confined mainly to a discussion of Distribution, i. e., Rent, \i\Tages, Interest, Profits. It is expected also to give some time to the study of the iariff and problems involved in International Tracie. One hour daily. Credit, one hour. 12 :oo; Room K, Administration Building. .

EcoNoMrcs S3. M 01ie;yand Ba11h11g. This course is a study of the Monetary and Banking History of the United States, with especial attention given to the National Banking and Federal Reserve Systems. The Quantity Theory of Money will be considered in its application to past and present conditions. The latter part of this course will be devoted to the Principles of Foreign Exchange and causes which have led to the present condition of commercial rates. One hour. daily. Human behavior will be discussed from the point of view of its origin and growth. Capacities, tendencies and instincts of man will be studied in so far as they throw light on some of the problems of educational practice. Lectures, reports and discussions. Strayer and Norsworthy's How to Teach, and Starch's Educational Psychology will be the text-books used. One hour daily. Credit, one hour.

EDUCATIONS4. Teachers' Course in Modern Languages. A discussion of the methods now used in teaching Modern Languages, especially of the direct method and a critical study of some of the most commonly used text-books in

Practice work as much as possible. This course is open to all students with a prerequisite of one year of a modern language and one course in Education. It cannot be counted as a Modern Language requirement for a degree unless the student majors in Modern Languages.

The most recent and useful bibliographical aids are provided, and the best periodicals and reviews, daily and weekly papers are currently received. As a depository of the United States Government, the Library acquires ann uall y hundreds of publications especially valuable for reference in Social and Political Science. WHAT WE OFFER BESIDES CLASSES The University of Richmond Summer School offers exceptional advantages to the student who desires something more than mere class work during the summer months. The student may combine happily the features of a summer school course and a delightful vacation and there are a variety of pastimes to relieve the drudgery of class work ordinarily so trying during the hot weather period. The University is justly proud of this.

In its suburban situation, almost rustic in its seclusion, the Summer School would appear to the casual observer more a summer resort than an educational institution.

The temperature of the campus always is several degrees lower than that of the neighboring city and the buildings, being constructed almost wholly of brick, are delightfully cool and comfortable except in extremely hot weather. The beautiful lake on the campus , the admiration of visitors, offers unusual facilities for boating and swimming.

Picturesque James River nearby ever calls to the student who loves the great outdoors.

There are fishing, camping, and boating parties for those who like to read the poetry of nature's great spaces.

Professors and students mingle freely on the campus after the fashion of a summer colony. Everybody comes to know everybody else and a delightful comradeship and freemasonry is developed that adds a social distinction to the school impossible to institutions where there is a large attendance. The summer school soon becomes as one large family.

The proximity of the school to the city of Richmond affords an education in itself. , The glow of the lights of the ancient capital of the Confederacy ever tint the summer skies to the eastward by night and there a thousand things of interest await the student on Saturdays and in the afternoon.

Every street is fr eighted with the romance of the making of a Nation. There are

the giant industrial plants, the State Library, the Capitol, the penitentiary, the Medical College, the literary shrines-magic with the spirit of a Poe, a Thompson, a Bagby,-the monuments, the museums. All these await students interested in history, business administration, government, sociology, literature, and make a lasting impression upon the student to whom "a thing of beauty is a joy forever."

It is the policy of the director of the summer school to aid students in their efforts to see the things worth while in and about Richmond. Points of interest are discussed in the weekly assemblies and expeditions to the battlefields with members of the faculty are offered. This prevents the hap-hazard and illogical wanderings into which students who are comparative strangers to Richmond, naturally would fall.

A six weeks' residence in the midst of these scenes under the direction of men and women who know Richmond, is worth immeasurably more than the mere transient and hurried sojourn of the tourist.

There is the lure of the wilds, a delightful comradeship upon the campus, the voice of a big city that ever calls, along with class work. The University of Richmond is glad to offer these inducements and believes them well -worth considering when the student comes to select a summer school.
