Junior-FreshmanWedding HE Red Cross Building, transformed into the attractive court of a Spanish dwelliog, was the scene of the picturesque Junior-Freshman wedding on the evening of November 26th. Rose and orange lanterns shed their soft glow upon the white and green altar, the fountain and palms, and made a fitting romantic atmo ~phere fer the affair.

The wedding party descended the balcony steps in their vari--colored costumes and graceful mantillas and gave charm to the a,lready beautiful scene. The bride, Senorita Baker, and the groom, Senor Shipman, and their attendants came slowly down the avenue of palms to the strains of the wedding m,arch and met their two famities and the stately priest. Here, under the lovely altar and soft candle light, the presidents of the Junior and Freshman Classes were pronounced as one in their every hope and undertaking. Then Spanish cavaliers serenaded the happy couple, and songs and dances were given in their honor. The spirited dances were one of the mojt attractive features of the evening, for their costumâ&#x20AC;˘es and gaiety were fitting parts of the wedding. After the ceremony, the immediate relatives and friends of the bride, the "evens," remained to a sumptuous wedding feast, and good luck and happiness were insured to the two young people by \he spilling of "wine" on the banquet table.

Dr. J. HollandRose HE visit of Dr. J. Holland Ros.e, as Thomas lecturer, brought to the students of Westhampton College a very personal sense of international kinship. It was a rare privilege to sit at the feet of this great Cambridge historian and learn of Napoleon, the naval affairs of the World War, and the baffi~ng problems of the Near East. These lectures increased our veneration for his knowledge.

When he talked informally to us as. students and told us of conditions in war-ridden Europe and the hope of the world in the League of Nations, we felt that, with kno,w led ge, he had gained that even more precious jewel, an understanding heart. From the depths of his knowledge and his understanding he quickened our sense of international kinship, esp,ecirJ ly wit h the Anglo-Saxon people of his country, and inspired anew a sense of re:ponsibility for the p~ace and progress of mankind.

Dr. Rose, as guest of honor at a reception given by the Current Events and History Clubs, and that same evening as guest of the student body at dinner, was much interested in American college customs. Ccllege songs were sung for his enterta inment, and then out of appreciatiou of England's scholarly ambas.sado r of good fellowship, fifteen Rahs were given for his country. That they meant much to this man who well knows the story of the rise and fall of nations and yet has faith that there is much in stor e for the world through an understand~ng of the Anglo-Saxon peoples, is revealed in the follo,wing letter. It is given here that each W esthan1pton student may preserve for all time tbe glimpse it gives into the scholar ly mind and the understanding heart of that great Englishman, Dr. Rose : Lynchburg, Va., April 25, 1921.

Just a line to tell you how gratefully I remember the charming hospitality accorded to m.e at Westhampton College. It was a m2morable r:nd moving experience, and I thank the president and you and your colleagues and the students from the bottom of my heart. Those enthu ~iastic shouts of "Eng land, England, England," \\,ill ever live in my thou ghts, as showing the inmost feelings of the best daughters of America.

Classical Studies Association HE C. S. A. was organized only one year ago, but since that time its membership has enjoyed a most healthy growth. The primary aim of the association is to send to the American school at Athens.

It is also our desire to increase the interest of students here in the classics. We have one meeting each month, making three for each term. At one of these meetings we have a classical programme for the club members; the second meeting is devoted entirely to business ; while the third is an open m·eeting, a social entertainment of some kind, at which are present the active and the honorary members and, likewise, the faculty and the wives of the faculty.

Due to the able guidance of Miss Butler, our faculty adviser, who has taken a great interest in all that we have done, we have had a very successful year, and we are hoping for and expecting great things of this organization, which is still in its infancy.

The Student Volunteer Band of Westhampton College is a small unit of the great Student Volunteer Movement for foreign missions. The girls who are members of the organization are preparing themselves for service in some foreign field. Their aim is not only to stimulate a greater interest in winning the ,-vorld for Christ, but also to create within each heart a vision of the world---wide need. From the time college opens in September until it closes in June, "Fanny G" has a prominent place in the liives and thoughts of most of the girls. At first she inspires awe and perhaps a little fear, but soon you realize what a deep interest she takes in Westhampton, athletically speaking, and that even her appalling frankness, which is at timâ&#x20AC;˘es quite disconcerting, is clothed with sincerity and ¡good will. Her own enthusiasm and example put "pep" into even the slowest. Because of her, one has a new and deeper feeling for athletics, and through them for Westhampton.

Because of her insistence upon good sportsmanship, the word sportsmanship has a different meaning for us and becomes a more vital part of that intangible something known as "W ¡esthampton Spirit," in which we all have the greatest pride. Truly Westhampton would not be W es.thampton without ''Fanny G. ''

Hairpin

UST how much of an influence hairpins play in the wo-rld of science is an open question in Biology, but we still recognize the tremendous bearing of those wiry beings which divide the peoples of the earth into sexes.

Now, though his profession is instruction, Mr. Hayden is a connoisseur of hairpins .

His closest friends have always felt that the¡ gods we¡re singularly unkind to him. These friends tell us that mishap after m:ishap befell him in his youthful days and that his life, without a central purposei around which it could revolve, was like a star that has f alien out of its orbit until he literally dodged fate by drafting plans for a picket fence built of hairpins, and now, with a justifiable pride, he pounces upon each of those delicate beings found out of its natural habitat. Finite endurance even seems to have no limits ; nothing can bring him peace but the triumph of finding more hairpins.

"Hark, another!" is the greeting each of these aides de coiffure receives.

Whenever he ventures on the trails frequented by Westhamptonit-es, an inclusive glance and an agility to bending are both part of his make-up.

He believes, wi,th Scott, that "exertion, like virtue, is its own reward," and so, after each bit of energy ,expended he smiles the smile of the victor and journeys on with fresh courage. With "the wisdom of the serpent, the logica l cohere:nce of man, the fearlessness of the child, and the triple intuition of the . woman," he can even ferret them out of places shrouded in a Stygian gloom-to put them into, another, his pocket. But shades of garage-fasteners, when he finds one that is rust consumed!

He flies into an -immeasurable rag:e; his own initiative has given him a hairpin which nothing but rust keeps from being a treasure. After several of the degenerate species have fallen under his observation, he descends the hill wearily, turning his attention to more fruitful fields.

Having arrived at the Science Hall, he first hastes to his Museum of Natural History (in vulgar language, the Laboratory).

Here : he carefully sorts. and classifies his collection. Phylum F errida, Class Crimpoda , Order lnvisidicus goes on the shortest nail; and Phylum Bonopoda, Class Translusca, Order Longiticus on the longest, but not until each is treated with formaldehyde, carefu lly ticketed, and entered in the Museum Register. :to :to :to :to Bioloey I class is filing m. L~ture begins; halfheartedly Mr. Hayden turns to the boai;d to illustrate; but, ah, a glistening gleam from the far corner! In a moment his lanky form, mustache bristling, finds itself hovering ove,r the object.

Dare he believe his eyes ?- four inches long, two inches wide, with a dozen eye spots across its cephalic end! He makes bold to pick it up; it is real. Hilariously he capers up to his beloved museum, class forgotten. Phylum Regissimoda, Class Rara Ornamenta, Order Dazzliba must have a nail of its own! and his one despair, a gatepost for his picket fence , is overcome.

Second Villain : Yes, my .. Neuf Contes." I've simp1y got to gel my lesson. Have you seen it?

What mail did you get ?- I heard from Bob today.

Heroine (grandiosely): That looks like the book in your hand!

Second Villain {confusedly): I-I-Why, so-First Villain {muttering murderous maledictions): That's funny! You must have found it as you ran out.

Heroine: Oh, the fudge! The fudge! (The delectable delicacy discovered to be done.)

First Villain {insisting, though carelessly): But what mail did you get, darling?

Book Revie-ws One of the interesting publications of the year is a small volume by ,Altha Cunningham, "Eat and Grow Fat ." It is a narration of personal experience, and contains many spicy bits of information. It is rumored that Miss Josephine T 'ucker collaborated with Miss Cunningham in the preparation of this volume.

From the pen of a new author comes a very practical treatise, .. The Simplicity of Mathematics:• The treatment is thoroughly scientific, and is so vivd and realistic that we can but think that Miss Madeline Ramsey has prepared it from the wealth of her experience in her mathematical course at college.

A newly edited imaginative sketch, entitled "The Joys of Studying ," is commanding wide spread attention. The author, Miss Bill Phillips, has produced this effective bit of literature amidst all the rush of college life . Interest is heightened by the fact that M ,iss Phillips has put int(?· her work not a bit of personal experience. From observation she has gained all the information re garding studying necessary for the specific details; and for the encouragement of those who labor while she loafs, she has transposed the joys of the blissful state of idleness into that more profitable one of studying.

Since the very popular reception of her book , ••Breakfast in Bed-A Dream Soliloquy ," Miss Margaret White promises the reading public sequel entitled, "A on Everything - Reveries of a Junior .••

..Track as a Lady's Pastime,' ' is the very fitting subject chosen by Miss Cora Curtis for her latest edition , which is a delightful account, in narrative form, of a familiar scene on campus. The author takes us all the way from the choice of track as the only possible form of exercise to the prostra tion which results from fifteen times around the course.

Miss Curtis has hinted that if time permits she will treat her beloved subject from another angle , namely, '"Track as a Successful Method of Re ducing.•• We cannot praise too highly Miss Elizabeth Harden's se·ries of lectures on "Advice to Youth."

The Advantages of Promptness, " The fourth, has just been published, and is now ready for distribution by the author .

Woes of An Editor (Contributed) With the first realization of the fact that you are to get up and annual comes the feeling of honor. You mak e many splend:d plans and have the faith to believe that they will all work out.

You will make it as cheap as possible, and certainly have it come out on time.

You really think it would be fun to ch_ase aro und after "ad3,,. and you are blis sfully sure that every business man will be crazy to advert:se in the annual _you are going to "get up ." Then , comes the actual signing of a contract w1th the So you soar ( or firm who is to do the printing. ride in a taxi fu rnishe-d by Benson Printing Co.), little dreaming of the pitfalls below you. About the first pitfall is the trip after "ads."

You walk many blocks in the business section of town, and are ready to get down on your hand3 and knee s to beg for even a quarter of a page before some bu3ine~s firm decides to favor you w '.th their "ad.' .'

Fall comes; you real1y intend to be systematic, and you make schedule after schedule for the girls to visit ·the photographer with little satisfactory remit . You try lo get ~nap3hots of the senion and their sophomores, of groups and scenes, a::-idit rain:; stead:Iy for two weeks. You be3 the f acu lty, with all your pe-~suasive powers, to have their beauty taken, and find out four months later that only Mr. Doub-Kerr has behaved like a "model child" ( to quote his own words).

And oh! the joy (?) of trying to get the athletic teams to have their pictures mad e. They even shock the soul of "Mi-ss Fanny G." with their non-athletic co iffures.

What ls Research?

UPPOSE that a stove burns too much coal for the amount of heat that it radiates. The manufacturer hires a man familiar with the principles of combustion and heat radiation to make experiments which will indicate desirable changes in design. The stove selected as the most efficient is the result of research.

Suppose that you want to make a ruby in a factory-not a mere imitation, but a real ruby, indistinguishable by any chemical or physical test from the natural stone. You begin by analyzing rubies chemically and physically. Then you try to make rubies just as nature did, with the same chemicals and under similar conditions.

Your rubies are the result of research-research of a different type from that required to improve the stove.

Suppose, as you melted up yot!!" chemicals to produce rubies and experimented with high temperatures, you began to wonder how hot the earth must have been millions of years ago whEn rubies were first crystallized, and what were the forces at play that made this planet what it is. You begin an investigation that leads you far from rubies and causes you to formulate theories to explain how the earth, and, for that matter, how the whole solar system was created.

That would be research of a still different type-pioneering into the unknown to satisfy an insatiable curiosity.

Research of all three types ¡ is conducted in the Laboratories of the General Electric Company.

But it is the third type of researchpioneering into the unknown-that means most, in the long run, even though it is undertaken with no practical benefit in view.

At the present time, for example, the Research Laboratories of the General Electric Company are exploring matter with X-rays in order to discover not only how the atoms in different substances are arranged but how the atoms themselves are built up. The rr~ore you know about a substance, the more you can do with it . Some day this X-ray work will enable scientists to answer mor~ definitely than they can now the question: Why is iron magnetic?

And then the electrical industry will take a great step forward, and more real progress will be made in five years than can be made in a century of experimenting with existing electrical apparatus.

You can add wings and stories to an old house. But to build a new house, you must begin with the foundation .
