"Sal." "When "Sal" came to Westhampton we wondered how it happened that such a "tee-niny" person was allowed to leave her mother 's apron string. But as the days rolled around we solved the question, for Sal proved to be just as big inside as she is little outside. Whoever has not heard that short, trotty step of hers coming down the hall, and hasn't seen those eyes just popping with mischief has missed a whole lot. Sal is right there on the hockey field; is the first one to "get a date" for the cotillion s and somehow manages to pu11 through her classes in spite of the fact that her left eye seems doomed.

Her three long suits as we see them are: Making speeches in Y. W., singing in the chapel choir (or anywhere else), and getting off that letter to Wilbur - she's a regular girl. "/

..Miss Bragg."

"Run into her!" loudly implores the captain of the other hockey team; but in vain, for nobody \'/ants her hockey career brought to an untimely end; so when Bragg hits the ball, everybody gets out o.f the way. She's like that off of the field, too; in every aspect of college life, straightforward, hard-hitting, determined, a clean sport, and a good chum. There's something refreshing and "outdoor-ish" about her very looks, though she knows, too, how to floss up and let her dimples fly.

The numerous ladies who call her blessed can't decide which way they like her best. Everybody is Bragg's friend; but certain people who live along "Devil's Den" know what it is to have a voice call, "Sh-motie ," up the length of the hall, and know pretty well where to find her if she has wandered from Miss Kitty's protecting care. Latin and athletics are Miss Bragg's long suits. If there's anybody who does either of 'em better, please apply. But, oh! how she does love French, and with what rapture she approaches speech-making.

To hear her talk you'd be perfectly sure she never could do either, but she always puts over the goods when the right time comes. We've about decided it's that streak of stubbornness in her that makes her do the job in spite of herself .

..Carrie" Carolyn Duncan Broaddus, Carrie, Broaddy, Fatty, Vamp, or any old name will do for her , but right here around college she's just plain Carrie . There's not a thing that happens over here or "acro ss the lake" that she isn't the first one who knows all about it and how it came about and everything -a nd if you are willing to listen (most of us are) she'll tell you the details. We all enevy her for her scientific turn of mind, and the way she can mix H S0 and HCL, etc., without getting an exp losion even from Dr. Ry2 4 land. Carrie has eyes that nearly jump out of her head wh en she's mad, but so far they never have , be cause her frequent bursts of temper are soon over, and with a genuine old smile and a wiggling of thoie shoulders she comes up and asks you for the "next dance" in such a way that you just have to give it to her . Carrie has a perfectly natural liking for good looking men ¡ and lemon pies, and if you've ever run up with her after she's been with either, you will find that the expression on her face spells SATISFIEO !

"Miss Ruff" This is none other than Ruth Carver, the bright, benign, and queer combination from the Blu -~ Grass regions of Kentucky.

There aren't many like her, and from the first l=>hehas won a big place in our hearts.

To begin with, Miss Ruff is a scholar-it's nothing to drop in her room anywhere after 1 A.M. and see her buried in a book, generally some book not pertaining to classes, or, much to the disgust of her roommate , just beginning a term paper due at 9 that same morning.

But Ruth can get by with anything with the profs. -:She seems to be their pet, and to her they send all the poor little Rats lo get coached.

Have you ever been out on the hockey field and seen two little yellow pigtails and a sunset-colored-cloud sweater effect chasing down the field after that ball?

Well, that's Ruth again - the athlete . Or perhaps you have seen her in Y . W. C .. A.. making a speech or leading in prayer-she's great at that-or playing the piano, or singing, or ~caring us all with her very violent taps and "shushes" in the reading room . Despite the distraction s of college life Ruth remains in love.

When she first came to Wes,thampton she was a very energetic memb er of the Man Hater's Club, but since a winter profitably spent in Louisville she declares there isn't much to that kind of thing after all , and we envy the one who gets her.

"Marie" What will W esthampt-on be like without Marie, we wonder?

Marie slipping through the halls with a smile for anybody she meets, and a smile all to herself if nobody is around; l\1ari e with her decided opinion at every contemplated play, party, Annual or what-not, that "we ought to have something cute!" Marie in the middl e of her bed with books pil ed all around her three feet deep, working like the conscientious little sinner she is.

Marie like a rosebud "all dres sed up" with an air of mystery, valiantly refu3ing to divulge "which one it is." Marie with pad and paper, and a solicitious look in her eyes, cha3ing you to know whether you have subscribed, are sub3cribing, or intend to sub~cribe to the _M essenger. We have always wanted to dress Marie up in a gingham pinafore and a sunbonnet.

Not that she look s like a little country girl - those " rag-time" curls forbid!

But there's somethin g naive and friendly about her, something young and trusting, something in short that goes with Riley's "Poems Here at Home."

¡¡cunnie" Cunnie says she used to be prissy in her high school days . We are inclined to disbelieve it, but if it is so, surveying the finished ,product of four years of college, we 'd like to ask with our small brothers, .. How'd you get that way?"

There is absolutely nothing prissy about that magazine-cover swirl she gives to her black hair; and when a girl almost refuses to play hockey on the afternoon before a dance "for fear her legs'll get tired"-we have nothing more to say! And Cunnie ,old girl, how about all these little boys you led astray?

This lady is one of the shining lights in intellectual circles at Westhampton.

She 's one of the nonchalant kind that seems to possess all knowledge without lifting a finger to acquire it.

She might claim to be a linguist of some renown, but the majority of French conver sationalists insist that it is no credit to her that hers is the only French Vera can understand.

She numbers among her accomplishments no small artistic ability, but so far most of her artistic instinct has been expended on that chocolate eclair on the back of her head . We would not seem to admire Cunnie too much, lest she get puffed up, but there's just one thing more about her that compels our admiration - she wrinkles up her nose when she laughs!

"Jenny" Whether's it's her only piece of candy or her last cleao "hanky ," Jenny will hand it over to you and forget it if you want it. Her good disposition and her long hands with their pink and white nails h,lVe made us all admire her. Of course, she has other good traits, too, such as humbly obeying every command of her roommate and never grabbing the biggest saucer of ice cream . And dance?

Jenny can dance all night and never get tired, and even walk around in high heel shoes all the next day and not have that limpy and hobbly look . We couldn't go very far in talking about Jenny without bringing in some slight remark about the men. She has one for every occasion, and we have even heard of two certain gentleman smoking a peace pipe on one very momentous night. She is one of the very few of us who come in to breakfast fully clad and with hair carefully arranged over her ears. Maybe there's a reason for that. Anyway, Jenny is all right, and she can certainly tell you a good way of solving the servant problem . Just ask her .

Ruth, will you and Mary Mac please have that work in by tomo rrow- I've just got to send it in." Such are the remarks she drops sweetly , yet firmly here and there. But all the same they usually have their effect, for when we see her com ing we just naturaHy get to wo rk. Mary has a mind that doesn't seem to work overtime, and yet she can boast of a thousand pages of parallel while the rest of us are thinking of getting to work on the third hundred. \Ve feel sure that whatever she undertak es to do will be a success, for into it goes her h eart and soul, ._:mdthat â&#x20AC;˘s enough said !

When exam time rolls around Blanche has no rival for keeping late hours, and many, many tests have been crammed for by a figure clcid in red, with _ four little curlers sticking dangerously straight out from a head perched up on the radiator in room 210.

She always knows the latest scandal, and nobody can beat Blanche when it comes to dancing , and dressing , and reRding Latin . She has a big heart, and when she's once your friend, she's yours forever.

There's just one thing this lady won't stand for, however, and that's anyone's knowing how to dance better than she does, but this is almost an impossible thing.

Blanche also has some dramatic ability which she displays whenever the spirit moves her, and wherever she goes she will brighten things up for everybody.

The Rats ha iled her at the beginning of this year as one of themselres, but that was before they had seen her in cap and gown, her shoulders very straight under the heavy responsibility of Seniorhood, and the irrepressible curls which the flu so graciously gave her bobbing out all around to mock her in her attempt at dignity.

Mary Mack says she is going lo Vassar next year, and meanwhile must learn to talk properly, but we have no serious fears that her piquant and expressive vocabulary will be lost to the world very soon.

For we have noted that in P . & H. her scintillating and beautifully relegant replies as to the number of bones in "Jimmie's" back, while unconventionally phrased are perfectly proper; and the elegant and expressive words she hurls at Miss Keller in Anglo-Saxon are none the less overwhelming because she assures the Dean that she found it "in the notes.''

We laugh at her, and with her; for who of us doesn't know that Mary Mack has no equal for sunshiny friendliness, casual-mannered thoughtfulness and quiet courage?

The Senior Class knows that it did well in giving her the highest honor.

Her pet expression varies about once a month, but since the minstrel show the answer that is generally hurled at us is "What you know about it, Ole Black Gal?"

''Ruth" H ere's a girl we are proud to know, and one we all go to when we get in a tight place . "Kina" Kina's knowledge is the kind that can be put in pigeon holes and produced at need . She says so herself, and we must needs believe her when we see the amazing ease and rapidity with which she brings forth information on every conceivable subject.

We might outline her striking characteristics after her own favorite note-taking style, as thus: 1. Efficiency .-Methodical; regulates her life by schedule and, marvel of marvels, lives up to it!

Always has her parallel done at least three weeks before the mad final rush of less superior beings begin s.

2. Neatness.i......._Comesnatural to some people, to others it doesn't. She is one of the lucky ones.

3 . Adaptability.-Exemplified (as one among many . ways) by the beautiful South Carolina way she says "poi-fectly .. since her recent removal to that state.

4. Style.-About which more need not be said than is it those little white collars and cuffs that make Kinaâ&#x20AC;˘s clothes look so knowing?

5. Popularity. - Ask the Freshman Class! Ask Miss Lough around -time for hi~tory parallel note s to be marked. Ask Dr. Kuyk, even though she did fail miserably on the last P. & H. Exam., getting only 98 instead of 99.

6. Propensity to Loaf .- People who have seen Kina at work more than twice a term please apply.

7. Partiality to Sunday Evening Suppers.-Smell the appetizing aromas floating through the tran som abo ut vesper time.

To Summarize: This combination of admirable qualities is very much desired around Westhampton.

"Shippie" Far be it from us to wish anybody bad luck , but we certainly are grateful lo the sickness that stole Shippie from '19 and gave her to us. And what we would have done without her we do not know.

Y. W. President has been her most prominent role. Patient and untiring, dauntlessly cheerful in the face of difficulties, she has been an inspiration to her Cabinet, and the quiet moving force back of But she turns her talented hand in other directions also, Fairy Sprite in every Y. W. accomplishment. the "Dance of the Nymphs," efficient "property man" of the famous and repeated "Green Stockings," Chairman of May-Day Committee, Counselor-in-Chief for troubled Rats, she shows her versatility in these and many other roles .

But it's not because of her hard-working (and hard-worked) efficiency that we all acknowledge the absolute necessity of a "Shippie" at Westhampton.

It's because - oh, we don 't know.

Maybe it's because when she comes down to breakfast in her pink or blue gingham dress with the big white collar, she looks exactly like a little girl. Maybe it's because, when you're very blue, if you can find Ship you begin to see a pink lining to the grey clouds immediately.

The girls say, "Shippie is so darling" and that hard -wo rked word must needs express the winsomeness that draws all to her.

"Truitt" When this specimen reached Westhampton in the fall of 1915, she was at once given the name of "Little Truitt."

Gradually the first part of her title has disappeared, and we wonder why, for not one cubit has been added unto her stature in all these years.

She's just "Truitt" now, and with the "little" part gone far into the background, the big part is what we notice most. Her Grant car and her Grand Piano ( which resides in the Dean's drawing room) and her frequent recitals have brought Truitt fame throughout college. Many a time she has rolled out of the hay at 6 :30 a.m. on frosty mornings and has driven folks to station to meet mammas and papas and cousins.

If there are more than five in the crowd, Truitt has absolu tely no use for you. That Grant holds only five passengers.

She's rather "sot in her way" and there's no use begging her to do a thing if she says she won't.

But all the same she knows how to hold down the money in the Senior Class treasury when she sees the members getting reckless. You 're all right, Truitt, and we think you will get there if Mr. Harker doesn't keep you too long at music lessons!

"Philena" Aside from Philena's many abilities which she has shown m college, we have noticed of: late this young lady's soon-to-be-acquired mastery of the art of swimming.

Miss Vaughan shows clearly the application of her major subject, mathematics, to every-day life by curling up in a manner similar to an integration sign when wending her way across the water.

Philena has shown well her extraordinary business ability in chasing after "Ads" and in collecting funds for the Annual.

Her composure is unequalled, and many of us have envied her level-headedness in class recitations and examinations.

Moreover, this Senior always has her shoes shined, even though she never misses the eight o'clock car. So we see that Philena has been efficient in more ways than one. We know, too , that Westhampton will miss her ,although she has taken her place in a quiet and unassuming way.

Vera llitch F all the fascinating Freshmen whom this year has brought to us at Westhampton, the most interesting, perhaps, is Miss Vera Ilitch , from Belgrade , Serbia. From that far country she was sent to us by Dr. Rosalie Morton, whose splendid work in Serbia during the war is so well known, and it is through Vera that we have been given a chance to have a very small part in the reconstruction of that brave little nation .

When a telegram reached us last September, saying that Vera was actually on the way to Westhampton, ,vild curiosity seized us all . What would she do? What would her color scheme be? Could she speak English, or would we have to use our extraordinary flow of foreign language s in talking to her? Or worse still, ,,vould she speak only Serbian, of which we had no idea other than that of vague sneezes and sputterings?

Her arrival, however , put an end to our most excruciating fears. She spoke both French and German, and was sufficiently gifted to understand our efforts along those lines. At first many things see1ned strange to Vera.

Our slang and Fanny Woodson' s broad "A's" were almost too much at times. Gradually, however, she grew used to even such things as that, and began to show a great interest in high-heeled French slippers and evening coats with big fur collars. She became as enthusiastic as any about "going to town," while parties of all descriptions seemed to suit her exactly, and made her for get that she had ever been "Serb sick."

Along with the pleasure and good times which she may find among us, we hope to give to Vera some things of deeper and more lasting value - that is, the ideals and the principles which American girls try to live up to and to express in their college life . When she leaves us we want her ¡ to carry back to Serbia the very highest standards of truth and honesty, with a breadth of vision and a genuine love for humanity.

If we can do this we will not have tried in vajn, and the task is one in which no one who knows of Vera can but take a deep and an abiding interest.

The Student Volunteer Convention : T is not a comm on thing for eight thousand students from all over the world to gather together just to talk over things. In fact, it is so uncommon that it happened fo-r the first time when college men ar.d wom en representing forty different nationalities met in the Student Volunteer Conference at Des Moines, Iowa , during the Christmas holiday.

To this conference Westhampton College had the great privilege of sending four delegates who were to catch the spirit of enthusiasm and inspira .. tion of that great body, and bring back to us the ideals and world ..wid e interests which were emphasized in the meetings.

It was a notable assembly of the w orld ' s youth that which met together to discu ss national and international problems. Under the leadership of John R. Mott, Chairman of the Executive Board of the Student Volunteer Movement, they thought for five days of the world as offering a mighty challenge to every man and to ¡every woman to get into the game and carry on to the fullest completion . Many of those who had the privi lege of hearing the inspiring addresses made the decision to sail beyond the sunset, or the sunrise, as the case might be, to work in the foreign department of the great campaign .

Many more of them determined to remain in the United States, for they realized that the test of what America can do for the world is what she can do for the people within her own boundaries, and that the spirit of Christ is neede:l in industry, comm erce and politics, as well as in the mission fields. All who were fortunate enough to be present at the conference have been convinc ed that whatever work they may choose for themselves must be unc!ertaken only in an unselfish spirit. For then only can it be successful.

The Partheno Systaseis is the literary organization which has grown up in W e:,thampton College , to take the place of the time-honored literary societies as a means of giving expression to this phase of our college life. The Partheno Council is composed of its regular officers, along with the Presidents of the five clubs which have been form ed to present various lines of literary interest and activity. This council makes plans so that the clubs may take up in their meetings during the year the t~1ingswhich are of world-w~de interest and importance . After Christmas each year all the new girls are cotdially invited to join any three <?'fthese clubs whose activities may appeal to them, and through these to be introduced to much that is new in art , literature, history or social movements .

1n the rush and bustle of college life a girl is rather inclined at times to neglect sue\ things, so it has become the purpose and hope of the Partheno Systaseis to lead her into a deeper and more ab :ding interest.

What's In a Name?

The Partheno has an alarming big name; Don't judge it by that, if you pl ease.

To pronounce it you ' ll have to just wriggle around And end in a mighty big sneeze .

What lies in this name we are going to tell To you, and to all of the Misters.

It's Greek, and if you will look at it hard, It means just a "Gathering of Sisters."

There's Sister Gazelle and small Sister Sal , Jeffries and Blanche and Sis Truitt; They think up most marvelous "stunts" for the clubs, Say "Come on, let's all of us do it!"

At full speed Miss May Thompson , a celebrated Greek student, dashed out and precipitated herself violently upon Mr. William Decker, a gentle and well-meaning member of the fa culty , who was peacefully ambling up the hall. Though slightly upset, Mr. Decker maintained his composure and equilibrium in an admirable way.

He is now reported to be recovering from his injuries, and unless above-mentioned process is repeated, w ill be able to meet hi3 classes as usual.

The Staff looked wildly at each other. Their boat had been sunk - how were they going to get back?

While they were debating about this Philena joyfully spied their treasure chest, which had been washed ashore by the waves. She and Maie leaped toward it. After several hours of search they emerged, Philena clutching ¡a crumpled transfer marked " Broad and 25th ,'' while Maie brandished a pink school ticket.

The result was a general confusion, for sud denly the gasoline tank exploded and the Staff was washed into the sea. Fortunately the wind had driven the boat near land, and they were able to swim over to a neighboring cannibal isle. Wild whoopings similar to the dinner bell were heard, and presently a band of cannibals descended eagerly upon them with ferocious looks. Being accustomed to receive these from the faculty for four years, the Staff did not waver. It advanced boldly , while Mary beamed a beatific smile upon the cannibal chief.

"Can we use transfers on sea-voyages? " asked May Lois doubtfully.

LOST-The gallant ship, the Merry Mack, was totally wrecked some time in March, according to reports just received from the scene of the disaster . During a terrific storm which lashed the lake to f.ury, the staunch little craft drifted too near the breakers and was · dashed over the falls. All on bo:ird were lost, despite the noble and desperate altempt3 of two courageous strangers from the country on the other side of the lake to effect a rescue. The wreck is deeply regretted by all, and especially mourned I b3, 1920.

Entranced class mutely objects, casting sorrowful glances at wheels within wheels on board.

Teacher remains finn.

PART TWO Class advances to door in body.

First maiden puts back against door meditatively and reaches hand behind her fbr knob.

Maiden registers amazeme nt; tries again; others rush to help her.

Class registers inquiry, indignation, consternation, and hunger in varying degrees of intensity . Door know will not turn.

Suddenly, THE STAR rises from seat, where she has been abstractly checking up late Reading Room books.

Following words flashed on screen: "Mildred, you alone can save us-" Fair Mildred looks about ber thoughtfully; eyes transome speculatively, then measures her own width with arms, and eyes transom again.

Class casts glances of encouragemen t and entreaty.

Several seize teacher's cha.fr and place it invitingly before door.

Fair Mildr e d hesitatingly mounts chair, climbs on back (it being h eld down by excited class), annd insinuates head t hrough the transom , following it with about half her body.

When her feet are well off the chair back she comes to a paus e; the camera, placed adroitly above, shows us through the transom that there is no chair on the other sideFair Mildred's feet register perplexity, mingled With determination not to land on her head on the other side of the door.

Class eyes each other aghast.

SPIDER'SDELIGHT One Saturday night a few Spiders and Spiderettes had been having an unusually good time in the Blu~ Room. The bell rang aH too soon, it seemed to the gay couples. After the more lawabiding Spiders and departed for their webs across the lake, there was one who seemed exceedingly and unusually loath to part with his Spiderette.

Slowly he made his way lo the door, and there stood by the side of his fair one. Suddenly the door from the hall sprang open. There was silence , then a scream, and a pink komono dashed pass the surprised Spider . In the midst of the parting words of the surprised pair there was heard again the creaking of the door and a piercing scream.

Up the steps flew a belated kimono-clad Freshman.

The Spider this time seemed to enjoy the fright and surprise of the late visitors from the second floor. The Spiderette , realizing that the bell had rung long ago, suggested sweetly that he start on his way across the lake .

"Oh!" he pleaded, "let ' s wait for one more!"

(The exclamation point is used after words to express strong emotion.)

My heart quaked within me. It wasn't that I hadn't studied my Livy. I had, but my feet ran along the cloi ster for fear I might be late, but my spirit lagged lamely behind. For an instant I almost wish that I may sprain my ankle on the step . Unfortunately, luck is not with me, I sink and I reach the class room in safety. into my seat, and that terrible stifling fear closes down upon me. The lesson begins. The girl next to me stabs me with her elbow and points significantly to a word in the text. I shake my head dully.

If I ever knew what it meant I have forgotten now.

I believe my heart has stopped beating. It feels as though it were suspended in mid air at the end of a string.

"Will you please translate , Miss-", the teach er 's eyes travel down the roll; the string is jerked violently, leaving my heart swinging madly. " Jones," finishes the teacher , and I start quilt ily, wondering if the whole room heard my sigh of relief..

Again I feel the stab of my neighbor 's elbow.

"What time is it?" she asks in a hoarse whisper.

I can feel the teacher's eyes boring in to me as I turn my watch toward my neighbor . ..Twenty five more minutes.• · "Construction of locis, Miss B. " Waves of scorching color surge over me. My cheeks burn . "Oat ablative of place," I gasp and am astonished to find that it is right. I try to follow the translation , but someone is yanking the string up and down like a jumping jack. The words dance before me. Their meanings have fled. They seem to be grinning hideously at me.

Five more minutes, three , two. She is assigning the next lesson. It is over, and I have escaped until next time.

Marie Crowder: "I wonder what period of the Hundred Years ' War Miss Lough will ask us on the exam?"

Elizabeth Landon: "She asked us the third period last year on account of Jean d'Arc. Marie: .. Yes, I know she 's crazy about him."

Coach Fannie Graves Crenshaw HEN a new class arrives at W esthan1pton, one of the first and most frequent names that greet their ears is "Fannie G." In due time they meet Fannie G. herself, and are initiated into the mysteries of Hockey, Gym., Track, and Basketball in turn. And then somehow athletics take on a new meaning for them. Those who played well play even better now; those who "never could" find that they can, more, much more than they thought, and find always a new zest and joy in the trying.

Why is this? You would not think that one person, even a person so big with the wholesome bigness of the out-of-doors could so change a whole atmosphere . But "Fannie G ." does it, and we can't even guess how, unless it be partly by her live and whole-souled love of sport, partly by her vivid example, and partly by the warm and true good fellowship that marks her whole attitude, and tinges ever her appalling frankness.

Sportsmanship means more to us because of her, and the spirit of that sportsmanship goes with us into the rest of our college life, into our work and ¡into our play. There are many factors which enter into that sacred possession, the Spirit of Westhampton, but we know that one of the biggest quiet forces that help to make it is Miss Crenshaw!

The National Student Volunteer Movement seeks to establish in all colleges and institutions of higher education organized bands of students who have volunteered for foreign mission work, in order to promote among student s more interest and enlighten-ment in the present world needs. This year finds the first organized band at W esthamp-ton, but ten girls of the right sort can "kindle quite a little flame."
