of all helpless people, the most in need are the homeless people upon this earth .

To be numbered among these would have ~~~~~i been inconceivable to Westhampton College before the spring of nineteen hundred and eighteen . Perhaps there will be no more critical nor more perplexing hour in the college's career than that in which she made her gift to America' s fighting manhood, and knew herself to be a college without an abiding place .

To one who, although having broken hundreds of personal and professional ties to give, yet judged his part not complete until he had succored Westhampton College, who opened a home to the college with a greatness of heart sensitive to the depths of her need, who responded with a greatness of mind willing to take no heed of violence done t<;>the inevitable associations when a building of the marked individuality of St. Luke's Hospital became the shelter of any institution other than that consecrated by the life purposes and labors of its founder, to Dr. Stuart Mc Quire, physician, patriot , and friend, this page is dedicated by the grateful hearts of Westhampton

girls.

Zip !STORY. Prior to September 12, 1918, Mrs. Sallie Black, the good fairy of W -esthampton's larder, in the course of some investigati .ons, happened to discover a wonderful fluid which she christened "Zip." It occurred to her to test this fluid for food value, so she introduced a small quantity into the dining-room.

"Imagine my surprise," s-he said, in speaking of the discovery, "when I found that the girls ravenously devoured what was in sight and clamored for more."

OCCURRENCE: Zip occurs , in Westhampton as a frequent element, and it is possible that it appears as a constituent of some of our dining-room compounds.

It ¡is found most frequently in the center of the table.

In quantity it is practically inexhaustible. It forms practically 1-16 of our daily ration, and in the volumes of two diningrooms there are approximately fourteen pints of Zip. PREPARATION: For human consumption it is only necessary to raise the Zip container The force of gravity does the rest, i. e., causes the Zip about ten inches from the plate. to descend to the level of the plate, \-vhere it may be combined with some hard substance It will be noted that the temperature of the surroundand thus he transferred to the body. ing air affects the speed with which gravitation acts on Zip. PROPERTIES: Under ordinary atmospheric conditions, Zip appears as a goldenbrown liquid, possessing a rare, semi-pungent odor mo.st tantalizing to a hung ¡er-whetted appetite.

Its color is variable. In some cases it is as clear as the mirroring lake, resembling the well-known oil of the Baumachristian or castor bean.

Under low temperatures it approaches the solid state.

CHEMICAi.:-CONDUCT: In chemical conduct Zip is similar to other foods. By its chemical action it readily transforms an appetite into a thing of the past, leaving in its place a well-satisfied feeling around the place of application.

USES: Zip finds increasing uses, based upon its wonderful sweetening properties.

These uses are (a) to eliminate a vacuum; (b) to enhance ice-cream; ( c) as a catalytic agent with rice ( it facilitates the process of swallowing the tasteless seed).

The fertile brain of woman has not conceived of half the wonderful uses of this. twentieth century marvel.

Student Government HE pioneers in our system of national government found that government of the people, by the people, for the people, brought forth law and order such as otherwise c~uld not be established.

In a lesser, yet similar way, the Student Government organization has come to be an important and respected element in collegiate life .

Student government, like our national system of repres.entation, affords. an opportunity for self-expression and selfcontrol and hence self-sa tisfact ion. Every girl on entering college becomes a link in the long, long chain of students . Each is made to realize that she is a custodian of the standards and ideals of her college and that her strength and fidelity makes the chain weak or strong as she wills.

The organization aims to bestir, in the heart of each girl, such a love for her Alma Mater that it and a feeling of responsibility become one and the same. The liberty involved in the Student Government sys~ tern is a far cry from the discipline of the spy system of earlier college days.

This liberty increases one's self-respect and the consciousness of one's obligation to a weaker fellow student. Student government, then, with the girls in loyal co-operation, brings. a new dignity to college life, while participation in its system also provides training which will be of large value in the. days to come¡. At the same time it provides present opportunity for friendly helpfulness and loving¡ comraderie which will continue through all the years.

Blue Ridge LUE is the color symbol commonly linked with joys to be attained.

It has embodiment at Westhampton in the fact that each year many hearts are set on going to Blue Ridge, where, in the lands of the blue sky and the blue mountains of North Carolina, the student Young W oman' s Christi.an Association holds a conference.

There girls, coming together from coileges of ten States, play hard and rest hard, that they may work hard upon their problem of making the most of their opportunity of youth and womanhood.

The close fellowship of girls with many girls, caring about the same issues, m,aking contributions to,ward meeting them with each college group pleasantly asserting its individuality, and responding to the stimulating guidance of Blue Ridge leaders; the beauties of the out-of-doors discovered in happy ¡hours of exploration; the abundant chances of knowing the girls in social gatherings and in sport-these are some of the things which, packed into those ten days, so gladden and hearten girls.

The spirit of the place is as true blue as the mountains.

Those who are climbers attain the mountain tops. All attain to the Blue Ridge spirit, and bring it back with them in such measure that year after year others, seeing, turn their faces toward Blue Ridge.

The Partheno Systaseis ESTHAMPTON began its history with the time-honored, typical literary society. It flourished for a brief time, then started on a decline, and finally seemed to be dying a natural death.

In its place there has arisen a group of s-mall clubs, organized under one society-the Partheno S:ystaseis.

Each of these separate clubs, is designed to meet som,e specific need in the life of the students.

There is Le Club F rancais, to which belong the girls who are especially interested in the French language and the French people.

At their meetings there is n9thing spoken except French, so they say, and soimetimes, as they talk French so glibly, they sew for the little French children whose families have been wiped away -by the great war.

Then there is Die Spinnstube, but this club has suffered a sad relapse in recent times. Some day, perhaps, it will be able to flourish as gloriously as does the French Club.

The Current Events Club strives. to keep its members abreast of the times. The momentous questions of the present day have been discussed on various afternoons over the tea-cups.

Every two weeks the girls particularly interested in things literary come together in a meeting of the English Club. They gather in an informal way and read, and discus,s what they are reading.

There is a rumor around college that the refreshments served play a big part in the large attendance of the English Club, but the loyal supporters of the club claim that some of it is due to Alfred Noyes.

The Music Club strives to deepen the musical appreciation of its memhers. The mission of the Dramatic Club is revealed by its name.

It encourages , dramatics in college, and occasionally there is a glorious play.

The Parl'heno S:ystas,eis is. the mother club of the others. · Each club and its members have membership in this organization.

Once each term _there is a meeting of the P artheno S:ystaseis,in which all of the clubs particip ate. The most important of these is the meeting ' . at which the Partheno S:ystaieis and is clubs . are inroduced to the Freshmen, each club giving a "stunt" characteristic of its particular kind of work. The new girls whose marks have proved them to be goo-d students · are then invited to join the three clubs whose activities appeal to them most.

The Partheno S:y!slaseis provides a way to express those things in life which are most ennobling.

It has played a large part in the building up of that thing we call W esthamp~ ton Spirit.

We welcomed her when she came among us, and down through the years we will cherish her presence .

Coach Fanny Graves Crenshaw ¡ HEN in the fall of 1914, Miss Crenshaw came to Westhampton College athletics were present only in name . With a firm hand, trained mind and body, and a fearless courage that has yet to acknowledge defeat, she bent to her task. And from a most discouraging collection of material, she molded a fighting machine of girls who lived, breathed and played hockey with her spirit surging through them. By struggling against "odds" which would have crushed any other, she slowly but as surely molded the little band into a successful team.

When fall comes and with it a long line of "variations" in the form of human material, one of most calculating observers may be noted as Miss Fanny Graves Crenshaw.

Her keen eye and ca1culating glance at once wander up and down the line, spotting here and there the few possibilities who will be able to weild a hockey stick, to comprehend the complexities of gymnasium, to jump a hurdle, to throw a shot, or to put a ball in the basket, and incidentally she searches their countenances for that courageous look of "battle to death" which is, in her estimation, so essential to a winner.

And woe unto the chosen ones who are to do battle, for verily their s is the lot of aching bones and bruised ligaments!

But in time these drawbacks pass unn9ticed and are replaced by the joy of effort and accomplishment that comes from being one of the team.

And not alone on the athletic field is this team fpirit at work. It permeates every activity of college girls and college life , time offering the greatest proof of its value and worth. ~--..

War Resolutions H EREAS, our F·ederal Government has asked that our campus be given for use as a base hospital for the duration of the war; and, Whereas, we recognize in this our op-portunity for supreme service, in as much as we cannot give ourseloes; Resolved, That we, the resident faculty and students of Westhampton College, gladly uphold any action of the President and Board of Trustees by which the d·emands of the govern•ment may be best met; be it further Resolved, That Westhampton College maintain a reading room for the use of the soldiers in the West-hampfon dormifory.

Back to the Old Campus It was November, and just cool enough to make one feel like playing.

The Westhampton

match games were in prog-

ress; Freshmen and Seniors, Sophomores and Juniors fought for ¡the goal.

As the girls lined up on the hockey field, the

Richmond College boys came out to practice football on their campus across the street; and soon the songs and class yells of the girls across the way mingled with the sterner commands and shouts of the S. A. T. C's.

Then as the sun went down, a bugle sounded, and rows of khaki-clad figures stood at attention as the Stars and Stripes were slowly lowered.

Suddenly a thought came to me, a mem-

ory wafted from by-gone days: Was it thus, on these same grounds, that the boys in gray stood those fifty-seven years ago

A command was given,

and the boys in khaki swung into line, marched from the campus, past old "Columbia,"

and on up the street.

Sauntering slo\vly homeward, I passed Westhampton College, and as the sign, "St. Luke's Hospital," memories again played with fancy.

War,

caught my eye,

In the days of the Civil

Rich1nond College had been used as a hospital for

wounded Confederate

soldiers; and now once again, the col-

lege had become a hospital, but this time a sister institution had be.en effected by the vicissitudes of war. "How queer," thought I, "that the college moving away to make room for a hospital should have occupied a hospital." of it all came to me-twice

Then the greater meaning

a military training camp, and twice

a hospital for wounded soldiers . A war college indeed.

Allied War Relief Fund

President Wilson's letter calling on the people of America to support the seven-fold appeal of the Allied War Work Campaign was accepted by Westhampton girls as personally addressed to them.

Mr. Roy Chamberlain, speaking from the fullness of his own experiences with their tremendous capacities for service lived up to so superbly, closed the campaign at Westhampton.

His strong, vivid sentences helped the girls to appreciate at least a measure of that life in which it is hard for men to keep on believing that there is anything in the whole world except bloodshed, brutality and loathesomeness.

Every girl knew what she would want to do for a service-stained soldier, if he could come straight from the trenches before her that moment, and -every girl , because she felt deeply and understood clearly, resolved to do her utmost for the work of the Y. M. C . A . and its associate organizations.

When Mr. Chamberlain came he found the girls ready for his message.

Real giving that represents sacrifice must have some preparation.

Before college was closed for the Influenza, girls were thinking about, talking about and working for the Campaign. ''Ford'' had purchased a receipt .book and was practicing signing her name with a flourish. When Westhampton suspended classes, a little group stayed in the dormitory still, and, in various ingenious ways, secured short-time employment about the city, and were the means of bringi~ng to pass a complete right-about-face of those who had inclined toward opinions of the ineffectualness of the college girl outside of college halls.

Every morning girls went away to work, and gathered at night around the open fire, and factory experience was matched against office, drug store against bank.

Girls at home , too, were planning and working wherever possible. True to Westhampton standards , the girls faced facts, pledged and paid.

Mr , Chamberlain said that he thought of the pledges not as a certain number of dollars given, but as a certain number of men reached.

The total amount turned in was twenty-three hundred dollars even, but thinking on the campaign today, we think of the pledges not as giving a certain number of .dollars , but as giving girls, for through self-denial and through labor each girl gave herself.

The campaign with the motto , "Every girl knowing, every girl caring, every girl giving, every girl her own judge," brought its own blessing to Westhampton.

VEN as age brings experience, and experience brings wisd,)m, we, the Class of Nineteen Hundred and Nineteen, bring to you, the Class of Nineteen and Twenty-Two, words of counsel and advice on this, our proclamation night.

The custom of having a procl amation night beg nn with the first Senior Class that went out from Westhampton's fold. Even jn so short a time Westhampton beer.me sacred to those girls of '1 5 's class, who before going out, left behind with their youngest sisters, '18, the ideah for which Westhampton had stood to them. With each passing year it has been th,~ privilege of the Senior Class to point out to her Freshmen sisters what college life ha~ meant and how she has profited by every individual phase of life within Westhampton's circle .

It is in this spirit of guidance that we point you to the mileston es of our past, so that your class and e.ach succeeding one may link past with the future, into a never ending, ever increasingly glorious college life .

To our sisters of '16, we give our warmest thanks for the message that they left with us. To you of '22, we give that message, grown larger by our own life in the past thr ee years. May you, likewise, cheri sh the traditions of Westhampton , and when you h&ve come to be Seniors pa~s them on, with your impress, to those coming aft er you.

Just as every little girl thinks her own mother the best in the world, so every girl here thinks her own class the finest in college . And that is the true spirit upon which is built our class spirit. It has been said that "great things have small beginnings ," which saying applies to the growth of class spirit. . At first not existing , later it comes into being as a feeling of comradeship among those who are passing through the ~imilar experiences of adjustm -ent. Then its growth is magical, once started it never stop¡,, but keeps right on to the point of "fight to death" for the glory and honor of your class. Then it is true class spirit!

While love of class comes upon us unaware , there is something else equally as big which must be cultivated.

This is the art of self-government, which we find embodied in our one thorough, inclusive student government organization, of which and for which every girl in school, knowing that a government reflects the true character of its citizens, is justly proud and equally ambitious.

And now that we have in our own hands the responsibility of g<verning ourselves, there is an opportunity offered us all whereby we may cultivate healthy bodies and vigorous, active minds for better meeting this responsibility, this opportunity that is offered on the athletic field in the variety of sports which we have been accustomed to practice .

Aside from its healthful value, athletics offers the. very best opportunity for cultivating

And we in leaving, enJ01n upon you who remain to cultivate this side of college life . and the results which it brings.

A feeling of comradeship of another kind, but equally as great and as far-reaching, is that engendered by being members of a Christian organization during our sojourn in college. The organization which to us has stood for a friend, comforter and guide is the Young Woman's Christian Association.

And to you it is offering an even larger opportunity of comfort through g~eater works.

Of all the ties that bind us into one unbreakable union, the love of Westhampton, our Alma Mater, ¡ is the sum total.

"For Westhampton's Sake," has been our guide in the past four years. But more, it will be our inspiration to achievement, our lamp to fame through the coming years. And in the heart of each of her daughters there burns the zeal to ever glorify and make great the name of Westhampton !

Junior-FreshmanWedding NE of the most notable and picturesque weddings of the season occurred on Saturday evening, November the twenty-third, nineteen hundred and nineteen, in the chapel at Westhampton.

The bride, Miss Gill F .reshman, better known as Miss Valeria Arrington, one of the most charming of the smart set of Westhampton College, wore a French gown of embroidered georgette with a veil of tulle gathered into a coronet of pearls. She carried a shower of bouquet of white rose buds.

The groom was Mr. Jack Spratt, Jr. (Miss Katherine Vaughan.)

He is a member of one of the most prominent families of Westhampton, namely, the Juniors, and lately has attained prestige in the politics of the aforementioned place.

The attendants were a maid of honor, four bridesmaids, four flower girls and ring-bearers. The latter two were the charming little son and daughter of Ors. McD~niel and Clore, respectively. The color scheme was of pink and blue, and the service was conducted in Episcopal form, the rector being Dr. Gazelle Stubbs. The gowned choir of Westhampton College chapel fur-nished the music for the occasion.

A reception followed the ¡nuptial ceremony. The guests of the evening were members of the most prominent families of Westhampton.

The wed-ding was a noteworthy occasion, as it united two of the great estates on the west of the "lake," namely, the Junior and Freshman families. Mr. and Mrs. Jack Spratt, Jr., go from here to the Science Hall, Westhampton campus, for a prolonged wedding tour.

HEY told us when the year began, and down to the tips of tiny toes the heart of every girlie ran-a whole long year without a man ! The flu came for a weary while and bade us fond good-bye and went; and then great joy was spread abroad through all the student government by words of our fair president, "A party on Thanksgiving Eve." The campus gave a joyful shout, and when the time drew on apace we turned Westhampton wrong side out, and last year's par .ty-dress about.

"Too many boys," new trouble came, and grieved us for a little while, but our bright council fixed it up and said we'd do it football style, and have two halves -re-enter smile.

At seven-thirty W edn.esday night all Company A knocked at the door, and smiling lasses took them in and led them to the highest floor, where faculty weJcomed them some m"Ore . By means of numbered cards, the guests were sought as partners - then the fun !

Old "Red and Blue" they all joined in, and then the jazzing band began, and dancing started . Every one was on the floor, or two by two, they promenaded down the hall, or on the roof or down the stairs-it didn't matter where at all. They finally happened to recall a cozy comer, some nice place, and there they had a cosy chat, and made new friends and maybe dates, and had refreshments-I might add that girls "K" to "Z" preferred to chat. Their ice cream in its khaki tints they'd get along wi.th Company B, who waited on the front doorstep until nine-forty-five, you see.

One quarter-hour between the halves-oh, joyful time for powder puff, and racing to the mirrors round to see if she had "just enough." Then back to that reception stuff, and matching cards and walks and chats, and dancing some, and talking more until the

bugle called. The last half of the game was o'er, and and Dr. Loving had the floor.

He shooed them all, so loath to leave, and progress to the door wa~ $low, but soon the time came even when the last lieutenant had to go, and, oh ! his face showed such sacf woe.

Well, when the door clanged to at last, each girl relaxed just where she fell, and hobbled to the nearest one of all the things she had to tell. The chorus was "My Beau"-----Oh~ well! That's all.

The Daisy Chain N our hearts the Daisy Chain cannot be separated from the hills of Westhampton.

It is there that the Daisy Chain of the past has been. It is there that we think of the Daisy Chain of the future. And even in this year of our exile, this year amid the smoke of the city, the Daisy Chain which we see with our inward eye is a resplendent one~ borne across the campus of our college home.

Each Senior Class, at graduation time, bears proudly on its shoulders a part of Westhampton's Daisy Chain, one link in the endless chain which reaches through the years. This individual part of the chain is dear to the heart of each Senior Class. Along with ,the daisies there is woven the memories of college days, the 1

pledges of loyalty to Alma Mater.

T'he Daisy Chain is picturesque always. Even its beginning is SQ. Not far college there is a field of blowing daisies, and knee deep in these daisies under the sun, there are girls hard at work, Sophomores with sunbonnets and ftayed straw They are gathering daisies, and carrying them in great armfuls to the wagon on the

Thus the Daisy Chain begins.

The next morning early, very early, one hears the buzzing and s"!bsequent choking of an alarm clock, the sound of stealthy feet, and some not so stealthy, along the corri ... dors. And there the sleepy-eyed Sophomores stumble out into the fresh, early morning air. They gather in the cloister, where the daisies have been brought, all wet from their dewy night spent in the bathtubs, and they fall to work. It can hardly be called easy work, this lifting heavy bunches of daisies and tying them along the big rope. But the

morning air gets into the girls, and they see the mist on the hill over the river, so they joke with each other, and sing the songs of old Westhampton.

They are loyal Sophomores-loyal to their sister class for whom they are wearing this chain. As . they work they think of that crowning later hour, when each one shall walk proudly by her Senior.

And so the work goes on until, at breakfast time, they have transformed the rope and the flowers into a great living chain of daisies.

Finally the hour for its triumph arrives. The people who have come for class day are gathered by the lake, waiting, looking back towards the college . And, at last, upon the hill the Daisy Chain comes into view. There are the Seniors, standing straight in the caps and gowns to which this day has given new dignity, and by each Senior her l

Sophomore, wearing a dress as white as the daisy petals. Resting upon the shoulders of the Sophomores is the Daisy Chain, a great rope of white, studded with gold. A hush comes over the crowd. They see the long, black line of go,wned Seniors, and the Daisy Chain borne by the Sophomores, wind down the path between the trees. Above on the hill stands Alma Mater, and the pine trees whispering their message.

The Seniors come down to the side of the lake to bid farewell to their college. It is here by the water that they ,vill part from her . Reverently the Sophomores lay the Daisy Chain on the ground.

The parting words have been said, and the Daisy Chain is lifted, this time to be laid upon the shoulders of the Seniors. And thus it is borne slowly up the hill, back in front

of the cloister. Here it stretches out on the grass, and, lo the form which it takes is the name of Alma Mater. A great white "W" lies there upon the green of the grass. West ~ hampton Spirit, that elusive thing, which usually dwells only in the hearts of Alma Mater's daughters, has embodied itself in this chain of flowers, and, for a moment, it lies there, so that each Senior daughter may see, as she goes, the whiteness of its purity and the gold of its fineness.

0 NG night back in the days of old Westhampton was after this fashion: On a certain night after dinner, when everybody has had two or three dances, there is a great scattering into different camps.

The F reshmcn scrambled over into one corner of the dining hall, the Sophomores hie themselves with dignity to that corner f artherest away from the aforementioned Rats, and the Juniors and the Seniors established themselves in the two tema1n1ng corners. This is the night for the song contest, and each class gathers close together so that she may sing well the song which she has written in honor of Alma Mater. The judges, three musically inclined faculty members ., sit in state in the middle of the dining hall. ..

There is a hush, a smothered giggle from the Freshman camp, and then the lusty Rats come forth with their song.

Away down South, in Dixie Land, There's a college we love best; She is dear to all her daughters' hearls , And in their lives impressed.

The F reshinen are there with the pep. The song "goes" and it gains ¡good applause.

Now all eyes are turned toward the Sophomores. Among them there is a great rustling, and then a settling down as if for serious business. What is this that they are plotting?

Then it comes.

A feeling of sadness comes over Song Night. The Seniors have sung into it their sorrow at going. But the sadness is over-mastered by the triumph of answering Alma Mater's call. The judges go out, and the girls, to make the time of their absence pass quickly, sing the good old songs. Somebody starts, "It's the Odd Born in us," and at the san1e time the Evens come in strong with "Even Spirits never dead."

Then there is bedlam.

The judges return, and one of them makes a speech with a very long preamble. His audience is perceptibly restless. Finally he comes to the point, and awards first honor towell, whom do you think got it? Anyway, there is long and loud cheering to the class which has sung best to Alma Mater, and Song Night is over.

Class Days 0nce upon a time som¡e vicious person, a man we ¡ suppose, made the remark that beyond a certain age woman has no more birthdays, or rather does not tell about them even if she has. We do not know whether the aforementioned masculine meant this remark to apply to Westhampton College or not, but being of a disputation frame of mind we defy his statement and continue to have our class birthdays in spite of him. Nor do we mind in the least telling how old we are. When on golden September days hundreds of 'Rats," fresh and otherwise, take Westhampton by storm, the first sight of caps and gowns marching proudly into chapel impresses all with a sense of the Seniors' age and dignity. The impression lasts at least two minutes, or longer, according to the nature of the "Rat"also of the Seniors. At any rate when the caps and gowns are shed, one finds that the Seniors are not exactly antiquated relics. They still cut classes, chew gum and at timei even prefer the movies to history parallel.

Such seemingly childish fault s one must excuse, as these Seniors are really-now listen, Mr. Man-just four years old . In taking up the question of birthdays, our eternal sense, carefully trained by the faculty, of the fitness of things. as well as of Seniors, compels us to give to them the first opportunity to raise their voice.

The birthday of the Class of 1919 falls on T 'welfth Night, a time when one instinctively imagines all sorts of thrilling, romantic tales, though in some cases we have reasons for believing these not purely imaginary . But to return to Twelfth Night.

It comes on the sixth of January and, so far as we have been able to discover, is always enveloped in a cloud of that mysterious , element known around Westhampton as "atmosphere."

This is created and rarified to an unusual degree by the doings and misdoings of the Seniors.

For the uninitiated it is often difficult t' to penetrate the atmo ,sphere sufficiently to find out exactly what takes place.

parlor on Twelfth Night. But what is going on? Is it a. Bolsheviki uproar or just Misses Wyatt, Tompkins and Sydnor giving vocal demonstrations?

We hear distinctly Miss Brown's beseeching lyric tones : ''Just a voice to call me dear, Juliette, you' re divine.''

Then Ford rattling off a joke: "A certain young lady from Georgia was once sitting in a dentist's chair . After extracting a pearly tooth, the dentist blew a stream of air into the cavity with a bicycle pump,

no other instrument being at hand. When the young lady began to jump and flop around , the dentist gently asked, "Do you feel that air?"

"That 'er what?" she asked .

In turning to the ¡Class of 1920, the atmosphere has in some respects be.come less airy.

Try as they will the Juniors cannot long wander among lofty aetherial paths with a larg e snow-white birthday cake reposing in state before their eyes, also before their mouths .

Would it not be a sinful waste in times of war to let that cake get stale? Thus the Jun:iors argue in their logical way as they put on the blue and white class costumes for their hirthday party. These costumes are marvels of style and grace, surpassing the Parisian

creation of "Lucille."

Blue "Buster Brown" suits with white collars and bewildering black ties transform half of the Juniors into beaux for the rest of the girls who, in robes of ;\-\lrhite cheese-cloth, might easily captivate the hearts of all beholders. Miss Broaddus, enshrouded in billowing white folds has been likened to the mist upon the sea. In their hands, as a tribute to May Day, the Juniors carry baskets overflowing with roses and bluebells that grew near Westhampton Lake, or with violets "swiped" from Booty's lawn.

The twenty-third of April is indeed a famous day, being the birthday both of the Sbphomores and of Shakespeare.

Which of the two makes it greater is a matter open, perhaps, to some discussion, though here we think it safer not to argue with the Class of 19 21 . Due to the varying fancies of youth, the performances of the Sophomores on this day are of a somewhat changeable nature. Having dutifully devoted long hours of study

to the works of Shakespeare, the minds of the Sophomores lightly turns to thoughts of (drama as warm spring days come on. Thus they decided upon one of the most famous ~f birthday events-a cabaret dance given in true lyric style upon Westhampton College lawn. The serpentine glides and dizzy plunges of the leading ladies caused ripples of deilrght among the audience, and have since been the envy of all not so accomplished. A charming study in rainbow shades, pink, blue, violet, green and yellow was revealed as the Sophomores flitted lightly around in their "Pajama Dance" until night came on and drove all "Pajamarettes" in.

'The birthday of the Freshman class on the thirteenth of May is in itself a birthday present , given to them by the Senior class which went out from college in the preceding

June. This is the last and perhaps most beautiful of all the class birthdays, falling on a day bright with all the spring flowers and .filled with the rush of approaching Exams., and the excitement of commencement. For the Freshmen, the days of "rathood" are almost over. On this, their .first birthday, they have reached the dignified age of one, and can soon haPrd down their rat-caps and pig-tails to adorn the heads of new Freshmen. Yet before climbing up to take their place as Sophomores, the Class . of 1922 celebrates its last rat days by a picnic in the woods, generously shared with the bugs of the .field. To this picnic Dr. Vick is perhaps indebted for the robust and thriving condition of his subsequent .laboratory specimens. Of course we mean the bugs, not the girls, though in some cases the statement may not be inapplicable.

Lemonade, sandwiches, juicy pickles, cakes and lchewy candy make the Freshmen's birthday a happy one that they will not soon forget.

Thus our class birthdays come and go, and by our performances we hope we have convinced the poor, misled man that we are still young enough to enjoy whatever comes along, and that in the future he wiH refrain from making off-remarks about our ages.

Over the hills and around the .lake where a few weeks before the tenderest spring flowers had put forth their blossoms, the less shy flowers of summer flaunt their charms.

honeysuckles in profusion vie in fragrance with pink azaleas massed on woody slopes .

All things invite us.

Everywhere, too, are girls, smiling giris

in fresh summer frocks and gay ribbons, who light of foot and light of heart hasten over the campus, or loiter in the court.

The ink is

dry on the ¡last examination book, the last term paper is copied, the last page of history parallel read and indexed, and classes are but a memory draped in a sigh.

Surely all things delight us.

body is free to enjoy life at the loveliest spot in the world, in the

society of girls who, take them all in all, know how to be the best pals you could find in a twelve months' searching.

Of course there are the Seniors.

No one wants to miss any

single thing on the program of commencement; for everybody wants to see ( when they are among the invited, to heat about it if they are not) all that the Seniors do to justify the pride of the college in them, and to share their appreciation of them with parents and friends who are always the particular honor guests of all of Westhampton.

This is what makes it true that commencement belongs

to every girl in some degree, and is not the exclusive joy of Seniors.

Every hour is filled to the last second, morning parties, afternoon fetes, evening dances, and yet, if you are careful about tucking them in, and the girls always are, there is time for indulging in long talks, for taking once again some favorite trail, for making a farewell visit to the popular spring to Observatory

"our" wild-strawberry patch.

The swift week passes, until that night comes when you look up at the stars that shine down upon the college beside the lake, and know that the next night when they are shining there with that same calm radiance, you will not be there to see them; every Senior, with her diploma locked in her trunk, every Junior with keen expectancy for what next June will bring her class, every Sophomore with a daisy for her Memory Book, every Freshman with a mind stored full of details of one of the most dramatic scenes of all college, will all be far away, telling the neighbors "all about it."

DR. GAINES: "Shall we bow in prayer?"

(After a lengthy ·prayer Dr. Gain.es produces the often recommended "Modern Reader's Bible.)

Reads a short selection and discourses at length. Broken, however, by several pauses during which Dr. Gaines stares fixedly at some loquacious person and finally says: "Now, we will continue . I hope, young ladies, you will pardon me for using a personal i.Uustration- but when I was in South Carolina I was driving through the country behind the best horse to be found in this section of our great country, which we owned, etc. ' ' (Finally, chapel already overtime, Dr. Gaines heartily recommends for the tenth time the "Modern R.eader's Bible," and closes chapel without giving any notices, by singing all five verses of hymn number 150.)

V. WHO? The whole short, somewhat stolidly built figure was imbued with a kind of nervous energy-an energy that made the idle and lazy quail uncomfortably before it, and which frequently took expression in a pacing · to and fro, to and fro, in quick , decisive steps.

The complexion was of a dark, dull tan; the heavy black hair, mixed with enough gray to make it conform to the dark subdued whole, curled in crisp, nervous., little waves, while the eyes were darker than all, black, oh, so black ! and appearing blacker still because of thick-lensed glasses, through which they pElered at you with alarming pene-tration. And in his dark clothes this mysterious man seemed somehow not to belong to this ag,e of light and materialism, but to the dark age of mystery and alchemy. He was horribly and uncannily clever, exact, and scientific, and expected everyone else to be equally so. He enjoyed immensely having his own way and with a malicious

In fact, after one has had to submit to him for an hour o-r so, during which he walked nervously back and forth, pe-ering at you over and under and through those glasses, shaking at you that finger, stolid and yet remark-able in its "wagging" ability, hastening and ridiculing you in that domineering voice and with that aggressive under lip, one thinks he is the most disagreeable man on earth; and yet-the next minute he makes a remark, so extremely humane, and smiles so heartily as to preclude all possibility of skepticism, and then, one begins to wonder.

Then you have never been down to the wilds of Monroe, where "Tid" lives. However, there is at least one advantage of living in Monroe, for "Tid" is one of the most typically southern and lovable girls that we know.
