In the past it has been the custom to dedicate the Grandion to some individual who has done most to aid in the progress of Rio Grande College. This year with the war paramount in our minds we have decided that those who are aiding our country toward victory are those who have aided most in preserving the ideals of our school.
'To the four corners of the earth' a1:e spread the alumni and former students of Rio Grande College, fighting for what they believe is right. Perhaps on the sands of Africa, in the bush lands of Australia, in the Islands of the South Seas, in Asia, in England they l·ememher the lines of a song they used to sing in Community Hall. One line of it, 'she stands for all that's right' may make more real to them that for which they are fighting.
Not all of them are in uniform that are helping in bringing nearer 'Victory Day.' To them as well as th:>se who are now entering the war we dedicate this book.
Respectfully,
TheGrandionStaff.

The Sigma Lambda Tau fraternity has completed another successful year, in spite of the fact that it has not had as many active members as in previous years, due to the conflict in which our country is participating. The fraternity has had several stag parties throughout the year, and the annual banquet was held, hut few alumni were able to attend. The year was ended with a semiformal dance whihc was sponsored by the Sigma Lambda Tau and Alpha Tau Delta fraternities.
1ear the close of the first semester, the following students pledged to the fraternity: Henry Turner, Leonard Smith, Bob Estepp, Jack Stroth, Dick Morgan, Dave Lodwick and Charles Sherlock. Of the seventeen members at the beginning of the second semester, there are fourteen who are either in active service in our armed services, on in the Army or Navy Reserve.
In the fraternity's ranks are the president of the Student Council, Glendon Evans; president of the R Association, Jack Duncan; editor of the Grandion, Don Edington; as well as other officers and leaders on the campus.
The officers of the Sigma Lambda Tau fraternity for this year were: Ed Hall, president; Virgil McNulty, vice-president; Howard Vulgamore, secretary, and Charles Weichsel, treasurer. Mr. Francis Burdell is the Faculty Advisor of the fraternity.
Coach Mendell Beattie was once more confronted with the problem of "manpower shortage" when the date for fall football practice came. Several of the starting lineup for the Redmen in the '41 season did not report but Beattie found a number of hopeful freshmen to take their places.
To fill the back-field spot left empty upon the graduation of Bob McNulty, the new football captain, Birdie McNulty was switched from his usual post at end to half-back. "Cap" Evans, fullback, was the only other experienced man in the backfield but Bill Ball and Dick Morgan, two newcomers, were picked to fill the other half-back and qua1'ter-back positions.
On the line last year's captain, Archie Drago, was missed most. Back again at center was Cecil Cottle. Mike Murray and Heber Corn were other veteran linemen. Jack Stroth and Tommy Lockard, freshmen, filled the other two posts and Jack Duncan returned 'to football as an end. Ed Hall, Howard Vulgamore, Roger Fritz and Dave Lodwick saw action on the line and "Zip" Burnsides in the backfield during the season.
After two weeks practice the Redmen journeyed to Louisville, Ky., where they met the University of Louisville Cardinals on a muddy field. "Chuck" Weichsel, starting guard, was injured in tihe opening minutes. The Cardinals fleet-footed back, Bill Taylor, made three long runs to score and aided in a touchdown drive as the Kentuckians won 25-0.
A wee.k later the Indians went to West Virginia Tech at Montgomery for another game under the lights. The Reds made a poor s'tart and the Mountaineers "'ran them ragged" for two quarters. The half ended 40-0. During the third quarter, however, the invaders settled down to play on even terms. In the last period the Mountain Lions roared again but scored only once - 46-0.
Still undiscouraged, the Rio eleven scheduled a tilt with Ohio U's B team. Played on the Gallia Academy field, the Red and White made up for their bad beginning in the Tech game by threatening to score in the first quarter. During the second quarter the Reds were surprised by the 'subs' who were sent in. Nearly all of them were the Green and White varsity subs and several moved into Ohio U's starting eleven before the end of their successful season. Dick Morgan ran back a kick-off 80 years to cross the goal but the score was not counted because the official ruled he stepped out of bounds. Score 59-0.
