Publisher ’s Message Diversity: the condition of having or being composed of differing elements : especially : the inclusion of different types of people (as people of different races or cultures) in a group or organization <programs intended to promote diversity in schools>

How Do You Celebrate Diversity? It has become increasingly popular to speak of racial and ethnic diversity as a civic strength. From multicultural festivals to pronouncements from political leaders, the message is the same: our differences make us stronger.

to solve a vexing problem. Culture clashes can produce a dynamic give-andtake, generating a solution that may have eluded a group of people with more similar backgrounds and approaches. At the same time, though, Putnam's work adds to a growing body of research indicating that more diverse populations seem to extend themselves less on behalf of collective needs and goals.

Harvard political scientist Robert Putnam -famous for "Bowling Alone," his 2000 book on declining civic engagement -- has found that the greater the diversity in a community, the fewer people vote and the less they volunteer, the less they give to charity and work on community projects. In the most diverse communities, neighbors trust one another about half as much as they do in the most homogenous settings. The study, the largest ever on civic engagement in America, found that virtually all measures of civic health are lower in more diverse settings.

This edition of Urban Trendsetters is to partner with Champions of Diversity to recognize the companies and individuals who keep diversity and inclusion in our local corporation and community. Columbus is one of the most diverse cities in the country and I think that I can safely say that this is one of the reasons we have been named on numerous lists as a great place to live, work and raise a family.

Sharon S. Gordon Founder / Publisher sharonsgordon@gmail.com

The study is part of a fascinating new portrait of diversity emerging from recent scholarship. Diversity, it shows, makes us uncomfortable -- but discomfort, it turns out, isn't always a bad thing. Unease with differences helps explain why teams of engineers from different cultures may be ideally suited

There is strength in numbers but I believe also in celebrating our differences. Next month is National Diversity Month. How will you celebrate the month of diversity within your company or business? Let us know of what creative ways your company leaders honors the cultural differences within your workplace. Enjoy this edition of Urban Trendsetters and help us kick off National Diversity Month in style.

COMMUNITY COLUMBUS ACTION NETWORK TO HEAR FROM THE PUBLIC AT TOWN HALL MEETING ON VIOLENCE IN AND AGAINST THE COLUMBUS BLACK COMMUNITY .(Columbus, OH) The Columbus Action Network

Rev, Joel L. King, Jr.

Jonathan Beard

(“CAN”) is hosting a Town Hall Meeting called “Following Ferguson and Beyond Beavercreek – A Plan to Increase the Peace and Reduce the Violence in Columbus’s Black Community.” In announcing the town hall meeting, Rev. Joel L, King, Jr., President of the Columbus Action Network, said: “as was highlighted most recently by the tragic events in Ferguson Missouri and Beavercreek, Ohio, Black communities in most cities have been frustrated for decades by the unaccountable and abusive police presence. We are looking at lessons learned from the needless tragedies in Ferguson and Beavercreek, and applying them to Columbus to build a better community. In addition, we will be talking about violence within our Black community, and developing an agenda designed to increase the peace and reduce the violence we afflict on one another.” Political Awareness Director Jonathan Beard says “during the Ferguson crisis, the National Action Network and the other major civil rights organizations issued a Unified Statement, outlining positive steps that can be taken to curb police abuses. We are taking that next step locally, and will be presenting the local elements of that strategy to the com-

munity in a town hall format, where we can hear from the community on these issues – as well as to explore developing an opportunity agenda to increase the peace and reduce the violence within our community. We urge you to join us for this working meeting on Wednesday, October 1st at 6:00, at the Driving Park Branch Library at 1422 E. Livingston Avenue.” The Columbus Action Network is the Greater Columbus Chapter of Rev. Al Sharpton’s National Action Network – CAN was formed in March of this year to address disparities in economic and justice in Columbus, and to promote and support positive action for the betterment of African American and low income people.

Nexus Academy and the “Blended Learning Difference When you first enter the Nexus Academy of Columbus lobby you get the feeling that you are in a high tech office space not a high school. This is most due to the fact that Nexus is a high school unlike most high schools. Nexus features proprietary interactive web tools, online lesson plans and instruction, their own internal email, secure community message boards, and more. At Nexus Academy, blended learning combines the best parts of online and inperson education. Students attend some courses in person with other students and take others online; small on-site classes let teachers provide targeted,

individual attention and support, while virtual classes give students variety and help them learn the material at their own pace. It all comes together in a serene college-like setting that promotes positive interaction with peers while bringing out the best in every student every day. Nexus Academy will be a featured booth at the Champions of Diversity Career and Opportunity Fair on Thursday, September 25, 2014 at the Aladdin Shrine Temple. Visit their booth and schedule a tour of the facility. For more information contact Nexus Academy at 888-553-6360 or visit their website at nexusacademyschool.com.

BUSINESS

How to Make Contacts, Raise Capital

(NewsUSA) – While the economy struggles to find its way back to some semblance of middle ground between a bull market and a bear, industry conferences can provide a welcome boost for companies looking to raise capital. To this end, Financial Services Exchange, Inc. (FSX) gives companies who need both exposure and funding a way to meet independent broker dealers, investment bankers, fund managers and more who can help a company thrive. “Our quarterly conferences get people together in one place and provide opportunities for networking and one-on-one communication,” said Judy Ensweiler, FSX executive director. “Instead of traveling around the country to meet with individual investors one at a time … presenting companies can spend several days with key decision makers from firms nationwide,” she added. This arrangement, Ensweiler said, saves companies both time and money. In this way, FSX connects companies with a nationwide network of financial investment professionals. Indeed, analysts say these conferences are now a must to gain the contacts needed for financing and publicity. “It is a way to have access to a lot of people who may be useful to your company, a way to connect for success,” said Ensweiler. While it is difficult to say how fast the conference industry has grown from its 1980s roots (at that time, only large investment banks sponsored them), it would appear that FSX’s 29-year history is indicative of an increasingly growing market for small companies and potential investors. To this point, fund managers say the most valuable information is not found during a company’s standard presentation, but rather in the break-out and one-on-one sessions that follow — welcome news to presenters and attendees whose main purpose is to expand visibility, broaden the company’s appeal and increase investor understanding. Underscoring its success rate is that, to date, billions of dollars have been raised for presenting companies through FSX’s network. In this way, FSX believes it is creating relationships, that companies and investors may “come in as strangers but leave as friends.” For more information, visit fsx1.com.

The Women’s Business Center powered by ECDI held its first annual lunch to support women entrepreneurs on Thursday Sept. 11 at the Athletic Club of Columbus. Keynote speaker Karen Hough, entrepreneur and Founder & CEO of ImprovEdge, discussed using improvisation as an engagement and learning tool for powerful presentations, and the WBC honored its members with three awards.

Membership at the WBC gives women access to office space, computers, WiFi, copy and faxing capabilities, conference room space, as well as numerous networking and training resources.

The event celebrated the impressive statistics the WBC has achieved since its inception in January of 2013. The WBC has:

As a video at the event described it, “The WBC gives a hand up to women, to families and to communities.” During her keynote address, Hough provided valuable insights on powerful presentations to a crowd of female business owners. Three unique introductions stressed the importance of a first impression and Hough’s first point that people assess others in about seven to 30 seconds. She discussed perception and the importance of confidence. “We can control our confidence level more than we realize,” Hough said, describing body language and other techniques that can help boost confidence. “Practice is what makes you able to handle anything,” she added. When it comes to the presentation, Hough recommended to keep it straightforward and simple. Present with purpose. What action should people take when the presentation is over? And the answer is not just to inform, Hough says. The WBC also presented three awards. Sharon Gordon of Urban Trendsetters News Magazine and Media was named WBC Member Business of the year. Mayda Sanchez of Unlimited Media was honored as WBC Volunteer of the year, while Accenture was awarded as WBC Corporate Partner of the Year.

FCC Doublespeak: Diversity, African-American Broadcast Ownership Snubbed Recently, the FCC voted to slam the door shut on an important gateway to enhancing localism, viewpoint diversity and opportunities in broadcast television ownership. It did so by ruling for the first time that when a TV station provides sales and marketing support for another station in the same market under a Joint Sales Agreement (“JSA”), that station will be deemed the “owner” of the other station for regulatory purposes. JSAs have been approved by the FCC for more than a decade and were in fact shaped by the FCC and its staff to comply with the ownership (duopoly) rules. JSAs have been an almost ubiquitous facet of the marketplace, as they are used by scores of stations in numerous marArmstrong Williams, Owner Stirk kets. In fact, just two months prior to its latest ruling, in Holdings January 2014 the FCC approved Gannett Co.’s $1.5 billion acquisition of Belo Corp., and Tribune Company’s $2.73 billion purchase of Local TV Holdings LLC. Both of these deals rely heavily on JSAs and other sharing agreements. At the same time, direct competitors of local television — cable, satellite and telecom companies — use their own JSA-like agreements, called “interconnects,” to sell local advertising with no percentage limit. I am the sole owner of Howard Stirk Holdings, which holds the licenses for two broadcast television stations: WEYI-TV in Saginaw, Michigan, and WWMB-TV, in Florence, South Carolina. Without the help of JSAs my company has entered into with Sinclair Television Group, Inc., I would not have been able to fulfill my lifelong dream of being a TV station owner. These agreements allowed me to obtain access to capital that would have otherwise been unavailable to me. Access to capital and financing are without question the single biggest obstacles to new entrant and minority broadcast ownership. Single buyers of a TV station, especially in small-

and medium-size markets, simply cannot get financing without JSAs and similar types of shared services agreements. In my experience, JSAs and shared services arrangements provided the only means over that obstacle, and are thus a critical avenue for addressing the FCC’s goals of serving the public interest in fostering competition, diversity, local programming and minority ownership. Therefore, the FCC’s statement that its recent action banning JSAs is designed to “enhance broadcast diversity and minority ownership” rings hollow. Nevertheless, the FCC also invited parties to seek waivers of this new rule, promised a prompt review and stated it had “an obligation to take a hard look at whether enforcement of a rule in a particular case serves the rule’s purpose or instead frustrates the public interest.” I immediately filed for such a waiver — which costs thousands of dollars in legal fees and costs — to acquire three more station licenses in the hope of doubling from three to six the total number of full-power TV stations in the country owned by African-Americans. My formal request for a waiver of the new JSA attribution rule in connection with the acquisition of the three additional stations was prompted by intense time sensitivity. Sinclair’s acquisition of Allbritton Communications, which would require divesting three stations I intend to acquire, will close by mid-July of this year. Therefore, we requested a ruling on the waivers by the FCC before the end of May. Contrary to its statement that it would act expeditiously with regards to waiver rulings, the FCC has done exactly nothing with my request — essentially letting the clock run out on the opportunity. So much for its self-designated “obligation to take a hard look” at a rule that may in fact “frustrate the public interest.” Juan Williams hit the nail on the head about the FCC’s doublespeak in a recent Wall Street Journal article when he wrote, “Liberals at the FCC who claim to be interested in promoting diverse broadcast ownership lose interest if the owner is a conservative like Armstrong Williams.”

TRENDY PALETTE

Peanut Oil Crisps Your Deep-Fried Turkey For the perfect juicy turkey this holiday or for your next tailgating party, cook a flavorful, deepfried turkey in 100 percent peanut oil in half the time. Roasting a turkey can take many hours, making it hard to get a crispy skin without drying out the meat. Deep-frying a turkey in 100 percent peanut oil produces a delicious, tender and juicy bird with crispy skin in much less time and frees up oven space. Peanut oil has a delicious nutty flavor and because of its high smoke point, foods are cooked quickly at a high temperature and absorb less of the fat and calories from the oil. A 4-ounce serving of roasted turkey has 244 calories and 12 grams of fat while a 4-ounce serving of turkey deep-fried in peanut oil comes in at 255 calories and under 14 grams of fat, a very subtle difference. Peanut oil also doesn’t absorb any of the flavors from foods fried in it and can be reused three to four times before it needs to be replaced. Just let the oil cool completely after use, strain it, and store in a cool place. Or, dish up some mouthwatering sides that can be prepared in the same oil as you fry your turkey, such as hush puppies, fried okra, sweet potato fries, and veggie chips.

As a bonus, peanut oil is very healthy. It is high in good monounsaturated fat. Major studies show peanut oil reduces the risks of heart disease. And, according to the FDA, refined peanut oil is allergen-free. So try one of America’s hottest growing trends, deep-fried turkey. It’s the only way to go! Crispy and Juicy Deep-Fried Turkey 1 whole turkey 1 tablespoon of salt 1 teaspoon of black pepper 1 teaspoon of garlic powder 2 tablespoons of your favorite dry rub 3 to 4 gallons of 100 percent peanut oil (enough to cover the turkey) Directions: 1. Wash bird inside and out and allow it to drain. 2. Rub turkey with the salt, pepper, garlic and dry rub. 3. Allow turkey to sit at room temperature for 1 hour or until completely thawed and dry. 4. Preheat peanut oil in an outdoor or countertop turkey fryer to 350º F. 5. Make sure there is no moisture on the skin and carefully lower turkey into hot oil either in a fryer basket or using a sturdy tool inserted into the chest cavity. Submerge the turkey completely. 6. Fry turkey for 3 minutes per pound plus 5 minutes per bird. Internal temperature should reach 165º F. 7. Remove turkey from the oil and let sit 20 minutes before serving. Visit www.turkeyfrying.net to view recipes from celebrity chefs, instructional videos, and nutritional information on deep-frying your turkey this year.
