Welcome to the UTS 11th Annual Juneteenth Edition The Spirit of Juneteenth
This is Urban Trendsetters 11th Juneteenth Celebration Edition. I have often been asked what is Juneteenth and I am not at all surprised by the question because 11 years ago I didn’t know the answer either.
freedom. Another “story” is that the news was deliberately withheld by the enslavers to maintain the labor force on the plantations. And yet still another “story” is that federal troops actually waited for the slave owners to reap the benefits of one last cotton harvest before going to Texas to enforce the Emancipation Proclamation. All of which, or neither of these version could be true. Certainly, for some, President Lincoln's authority over the rebellious states was in question But the announcement read like this:

Note that ARE FREE! this was two and a half years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation - which had become official January 1, 1863. The Emancipation Proclamation had little impact on the Texans due to the minimal number of Union troops to enforce the new Executive Order. However, with the surrender of General Lee in April of 1865, and the arrival of General Granger’s regiment, the forces were finally strong enough to influence and overcome the resistance. Later attempts to explain this two and a half year delay in the receipt of this important news have yielded several versions that have been handed down through the years. Often told is the story of a messenger who was murdered on his way to Texas with the news of
Sometimes I don’t think we all still quite have the message. My prayer for this Juneteenth is that we come out to support this celebration and give it the respect it deserves based on the reason for the celebration. On more than many occasions our events are not enjoyed by the carelessness of a few. Parents teach your children their history and about our past as a people and maybe they will have more respect for our celebrations and their purpose. More on that in another edition! Join in the celebration of Juneteenth 2014 and be FREE.

JuneteenthOhio has indeed evolved into the 3rd largest celebration in the country, this accomplishment in itself speaks greatness to the City Of Columbus Ohio and it’s surrounding places. Did you know that according to economist Dr. Claude Anderson in the year 1865 African Americans owned one half of one percent of the wealth in the USA? Did you also know that today the African American still owns one half of one percent of the wealth with a buying power of one trillion dollars per year? The fact of the matter is that the wealth gap will continue to widen until we receive appropriate education on how to spend, save, and invest that all mighty dollar. Let us begin to have the discussion on this fact daily, lead focus groups in our communities, start training in our churches, or places of worship, and to re-establish economic principles that will help us harness the one trillion dollar net worth of todays African American.
