Celebrating Juneteenth, Father’s Day and Black Music Month It has often been said that in general, Father’s get cheated out of their “Father’s Day Props” when compared to that of mom on Mother’s Day. So, I want to start off with a grand “shout out” to all of the father’s out there for all that you do. I have been blessed to have two father’s in my life, my biological father the late, great Earl Gordon and my wonderful step-father Clyde E. Wright. I am equally blessed to still have my grandfather with me, Mr. Norman Rhodes of Whitesville, TN. “Grand-daddy”, will turn 102 years young this coming August and yes he is still kicking up dust! (SMILE) June is also Black Music Month. There is no denying the critical impact and contribution that African American musicians, composers and artists have made to this nation through our music. If you are looking for the definition of an Urban Trendsetter, you can begin looking into the history of not just our music but American MUSIC. The titles, categories or genres of “our” music, black music, have changed over the decades. From the cotton fields we gave the country Negro spirituals and from the urban and inner streets we gave you Hip-Hop and all that in between. The “Urban Trendsetters” of music changed the game and music has built more bridges than our ancestors could have ever imagined. From Soul Music, R & B, New Jack Swing, GO-GO and Gospel, black music has continued to give us the ability to re-create our self over and over again. So take a day this month to kick back and pull out some of your favorite “ole skool “music and just relax and let it take you back in time. You have to do this every once in awhile because they don’t make music like that anymore. Timeless best describe those songs, which is why the best have been remixed and sampled and still relevant today. When I was growing up old school music days in my house was every Saturday. I called it cleaning music because that is what my mother would play when it was cleaning time. It actually seemed as though it made the chore list shorter and time go by faster. Those were the days that I discovered the music of Etta James, Aretha Franklin, James Brown, Motown and many other great artists of our time. And even though I may not have known all the words and what they were singing about, I knew that I was hearing some “goooood SANGIN”! We salute Black Music Month this month and every month of the year. Last but not least I know that many of you will be joining your families at graduations, weddings and many other family get-togethers this month. One of the annual events that we here at Urban Trendsetters have proudly been a media sponsor of is the Juneteenth Festival. As a media print sponsor of Juneteenth Ohio we have provided you with the entire event schedule as well as the history of this celebration. This one weekend of the month will give the opportunity to enjoy a combo-platter of all the celebrations in one. So, bring your father and family out to Franklin Park on Father’s Day Weekend, sit back and listen to some great black folks music, eat some good old soul food and celebrate Juneteenth, the day the last of us got the message that we were FREE. By the way, if you know of some people that are still acting as though they are in bondage; bring them with you. I hope you enjoy this month’s special edition and look forward to our July Summer Sizzler edition that will showcase all of the upcoming festivals, concerts and cultural events scheduled throughout Ohio. Until that time have a blessed and safe summer.

Mayor Coleman Announces Neighborhood Pride’s 13th Season Four Neighborhoods in 2012

A new season is gearing up for Neighborhood Pride, the city’s initiative to engage residents, businesses and volunteers to clean-up, fix-up, beautify and strengthen residential areas. Mayor Michael B. Coleman announced the four Neighborhood Pride areas of 2012 at Shady Lane Elementary to a crowd of elementary school students, neighborhood leaders and business partners. The announcement occurred at the first Neighborhood Pride Bicycle Safety Festival of 2012, in which the 900 students of Shady Lane Elementary and Olde Orchards

Elementary enjoyed a day of safety training and received a free, fitted bicycle safety helmet thanks to partners Nationwide Children’s Hospital and the Columbus Blue Jackets Foundation. “I want to thank all the neighborhoods who have asked to be part of this great program and the great residents and city employees who make it successful,” Mayor Coleman said. “This is our bicentennial, and it is going to be a particularly great year for Neighborhood Pride.” In addition to the streets being swept, potholes filled, catch basins inspected and

repaired, Neighborhood Pride week hosts a variety of community events including a Neighborhood Safety Academy on Tuesday night, Mayor’s Community Bike Ride on Wednesday night and Mayor Coleman’s Community Night on Thursday Night. A Bicycle Safety Festival will be held at the neighborhood Elementary school and select students will be chosen to participate in the Neighborhood Pride Talent Search. New this year to Neighborhood Pride week is Healthy Wednesdays. The 2012 Neighborhood Pride Areas are: May 21-25: City crews have already started work in the first Neighborhood Pride area of 2012, Willis Park. Working with the Willis Park Civic Association and Block Watch, Pride week activities Monday

through Thursday will occur at the Big Walnut Shelter House, 5000 E. Livingston and on Friday the neighborhood will host the neighborhood cookout at Willis Park. The Pride area boundaries are E. Main Street to E. Livingston Avenue, Big Walnut Park to Country Club Road. June 18 – 22: The Cross Creek Village Civic Association and Block Watch is excited to bring Pride to their neighborhood. All activities will take place at the Resurrection Evangelical Lutheran Church, 3500 E. Main Street in Hilliard, with the exception of the Mayor’s Bike Ride on Wednesday June 20th that will begin from Hilliard Crossing Elementary. The Pride area boundaries are Ivywild Ave, Walcutt Rd and Hilliard Rome Rd. July 23-27: The Sharon Heights Community Association, Clintonville Area Commission District 9 and a section of CAC district 8 have joined forces to bring Pride to their area. The North Columbus Baptist Church at 76 Charleston Avenue will be the host for Pride week activities. Pride area boundaries are the Worthington Border, Morse Road, Indianola Avenue, and Graceland Shopping Center. September 17 – 21: The Marion Franklin Civic Association welcomes back Neighborhood Pride. Pride week activities will occur at the Church of Hope Methodist Church, 2935 Bulen. Boundaries are Refugee, Watkins Rd., Cassady Ave., Lockbourne Rd. Neighborhood Pride is a partnership between residents and the City of Columbus, created by Mayor Coleman in 2000, spurring City Departments to bring a wide variety of coordinated neighborhood services into specific areas for a week. In Pride’s first twelve years, more than 2,007 streetlights have been repaired, 1,238 tons of bulk trash has been picked up, 25,924 catch basins inspected, and 7,009 fire hydrants painted during Pride weeks. Since 2003, the Neighborhood Pride Bicycle Safety Festival has fitted over 18,000 free bicycle safety helmets. ODOT Launches Program Aimed at Generating Millions in New Revenue

Columbus, Ohio – The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) is hoping to generate millions of dollars in new money by launching a program that will permit advertising and sponsorship opportunities at interstate rest areas and welcome centers throughout Ohio. Currently, the department is seeking competitive bids for the Sponsorship, Maintenance,

and Advertising Revenue Tartgeted (SMART) program. Money generated from the SMART program will help ODOT offset a portion of the $30 to $50 million the agency spends each year to maintain the state’s 101 rest areas. Annual rest area maintenance costs include paying gas, water, electric and sewage bills, as well as mowing grass, resurfacing parking lots, improving buildings and paying for janitorial and housekeeping services. “This new program will help do two

things: reduce the amount of money ODOT spends on rest area maintenance and generate new money we can use to pay for some of the major construction projects communities have told us they want,” said ODOT Director Jerry Wray. “Launching the SMART program demonstrates that ODOT is serious about thinking outside the box and seeking innovative and alternative funding sources to pay for road construction in Ohio.” This is the first major initiative ODOT has announced since it launched the Division of Innovative Delivery earlier this year. The department is exploring options to unlock the revenue potential of the Ohio Turnpike and non-interstate rest areas, in addition to developing a program to generate millions of dollars for the sponsorship and naming rights of certain state-owned assets such as bridges, interchanges and sections of highway.

The division is also exploring publicprivate partnerships (P3’s) to expedite the construction of some of the state’s largest construction projects, including: • The second Innerbelt Bridge in Cleveland • The Brent Spence Bridge in Cincinnati • The Portsmouth Bypass in Scioto County • An interchange for U.S. Route 36 and SR 37 on I-71 in Delaware County In January, ODOT announced a $1.6 billion budget hole that forced the department to push back by decades some of the state’s largest construction projects. Since then, the agency has initiated a complete review of all current and future transportation projects to identify those that could be excellent candidates for P3’s, and has sought to identify additional sources of revenue to aid in the funding of major transportation projects throughout the state. Details of the review are expected later this year.

STATE NEWS

Ohioans Can Now Access Child Support Information Online

Columbus, Ohio – The Ohio Department of Job and Family Services (ODJFS) has announced a new website that will give families 24-hour access to their child support case information online, so they can look up information about their cases themselves, without having to call or visit a local office. “Our new Child Support Customer Service Web Portal gives families a quick, easy and secure way to

n o s r a C e n e l r a M A WOMAN ON A MISSION

OUTREACH

find out information about their cases, and it also will help reduce administrative work at our county offices,” said ODJFS Director Michael Colbert. “We are extremely excited to be able to offer this service, and think families will find it to be very helpful.” The portal allows families to access their recent payment activity, as well as their payment information for the previous two years. It also

provides a link to frequently asked questions about Ohio’s child support program, such as how to establish paternity, how to establish a child support order, and options for making and receiving payments. Future enhancements to the site will provide a way for families to communicate directly with their county child support enforcement agencies, and also a way for them to apply for services online, such as paternity establishment, support enforcement, or a request for a review and adjustment of a child support order.

In Ohio, child support orders can be reviewed and possibly adjusted every 36 months. The amount owed could be reduced if the parent responsible for paying it becomes unemployed through no fault of his or her own for at least 30 days or experiences a 30 percent reduction in gross income. For more information about Ohio’s child support program or to access the new Child Support Customer Service Web Portal, visit www.jfs. ohio.gov/ocs or call or visit your county child support enforcement agency (CSEA). (PDF) The ODJFS Office of Child Support collects and disburses nearly $2 billion annually to more than 1 million Ohio children.

“Hey would you like to go on a New York Shopping Spree?” That was the question asked to then 15 year old Marlene Carson on the day that would change her life forever because as most 15 year old teenage girls would do; she said yes! CNN has joined the fight to end modern-day slavery and shine a spotlight on the horrors slavery today, amplify the voices of victims, highlight success stories and help unravel the complicated tangle of criminal enterprises trading in human life. In a recent special investigation report called The CNN Freedom Project, and in the world premiere of the documentary, “Nepal’s Stolen Children.” In the program, actress Demi Moore, a passionate advocate for victims of human trafficking herself, Moore travels to Nepal to meet 2010 CNN Hero of the Year Anuradha Koirala and some of the thousands of women and girls Koirala’s organization has rescued from forced prostitution. How were they taken and where were they sent? Among community activists against Human Trafficking interviewed for the special series was Columbus’ own, Marlene Carson, founder and CEO of Rehab’s Hideaway (A prostitute in the Bible) as well

8 Urban Trendsetters June, 2012

as a former victim of Human Trafficking. In the interview Carson was asked the following question: You spent 20 years running an escort service, as you have said, selling everything but your own soul. For those who may not understand, why is that life considered modern-day slavery? To understand, let me tell you my story first. There was a pimp in Columbus. I was 15 years old. There was this guy who moved into his neighborhood with his wife–who we later found out was his first victim. They courted our neighborhood for a year and one half. They knew the parents. They went to the PTA meetings. Their house was the hang-out house for the kids in the neighborhood. They gained our trust. They

asked four girls if they could take us to New York for Labor Day weekend. They took us to New York and we get there and we found out, instead of going to a Broadway show, we were being sold. And over the next four days—-well this gentlemen had set up dates. Three of us were virgins, including myself. So I had no idea about what they were talking about. They brought three of us back to Columbus. Four left, three came back. The fourth, in her attempt to escape, was taken in a car took her to Connecticut with two men. They beat and raped her, but she did not die. Back in Columbus—I lived 800 feet from my junior high school–two weeks later, the guy pulls up and says: get in the car. I won’t. They snatched me and kept me for 8 months. They had me all over the country—in prostitution, going from state to state.” I think many people would be shocked

to realize that modern-day slavery exists in the United States. In your view, how widespread is the problem? I don’t think it can be measured—it’s such an underground industry. It’s in every state, in every neighborhood. I lived in one of the most affluent neighborhoods in Columbus when I was in prostitution. I think it’s important to understand that human trafficking is a $39 to 44 billiondollar-a-year industry. But these are not guys roaming the streets looking for a good time. These are men who can pay $200, $300, $500 an hour. So these are the people you see on the TV selling cars, people you think you can go to, and some of them are buying kids. Who are these victims? These are girls who are vulnerable youth. These girls come from various kinds of homes and economic backgrounds and ethnicities. A trafficker does not care if you are rich or poor. But what a real trafficker wants is a product. They want a trophy that a man can put on his arm and pay top dollar for. The myth is that these girls –Continued on pg 24

African-American elders growing in numbers, but who will tend to them? By Kimberly N. Alleyne African-Americans are living longer, and the number of individuals age 65 and older will triple by 2050. This population boom has deep implications for longterm medical care and the needs for aging elders. The demand for caregivers is also expected to swell. Despite the availability of nursing and assisted living facilities, historically, African-Americans have not been quick to rely on them. Some say that is changing. “Caregiving remains an essential part of the African-American family, but as our families have become more transit and dislocated from each other, so has our need for nursing and assisted living facilities,” says Karyne Jones, president of the National Caucus and Center on Black Aged. “However, the problems lie with affordability and access.” The NCBA is a Washington, D.C.-based organization that addresses the needs of elderly African-Americans in the areas of affordable housing, health and wellness, and employment. “At one time, more often black women were the obvious caregivers for senior parents and relatives,” Jones continues, “Now, with the majority of African-American women completing higher education and being

HAPPY FATHERS DAY

employed, there has been a cultural shift in the role of automatic caregivers in the family -- and we see an increased need for facilities and home-health assistance more than before.” According to the Census Bureau, there were 3.2 million African-American elders 65 and older in 2008. By 2050, that number will total 9.9 million. According to the Administration on Aging, however, the number of family members who can act as caregivers will not grow by the same bounds. That is a huge issue for families where caregiving is, or will be. the only option. The Family Caregiver Alliance defines a caregiver as “anyone who provides assistance to someone else who is, to some degree, incapacitated and needs help performing the daily tasks essential to living a normal life.” Beverly Budd of Longmeadow, Mass., is caregiver to her mother, Oneida Frisby, who is 88. Budd tends to her needs such as grocery shopping and cooking meals. “She had surgery a couple of years ago and my siblings and I felt like we should put her in an assisted living medical facility,” says Budd, who is the youngest of her three siblings. “I drove her around and found one that she seemed to like, but I could tell she wasn’t happy about it, and I wanted her to be happy.” Now Frisby lives in a facility for seniors and –Continued on pg. 14

The caregiver role that Budd plays is a crucial one in many African-American families because acute-care costs often hinder them from utilizing assisted living facilities. “Because long-term care is expensive, Medicare does not cover it, and an asset like homeownership prohibits participation in Medicaid, once again, affordability and accessibility are the major obstacles. With many families in the sandwich generation, it becomes a challenge for the entire family,” Jones said. Cost is not always a factor, though. There are those for whom caregiving is not a choice because of the complexity of an illness that requires constant medical attention. That was the case for Bishop Garland Hunt. Hunt’s father died in 2001 at age 75, from complications of dementia. Prior to that though, Hunt says, he and his wife decided to place his father in a nursing facility. “He did live with us for a while, but it became clear that he needed 24-hour supervision,” says Hunt, who is a pastor, and president of a national prison ministry called Prison Fellowship, “He got out a few times, and in one of those instances he was found near a creek. That could have been a tragic situation.” Budd and her siblings are fortunate in that, other than osteoarthritis, their mother has no major ailments and is exceptionally alert and spry for an octogenarian. “Mom is an amazing woman,” Budd gushes. For families who are not as fortunate as Budd’s, however, the true test will be finding an affordable and feasible course of care as their loved ones age. Bounce TV launched in September 2011 as the nation’s first over-the-air broadcast television network for AfricanAmericans. GTN (Guardian Television Network) in Columbus, has partnered with Bounce TV to bring an exciting line-up of movies and music to Columbus. Tune in to GTN/Bounce to watch Family Feud, Judge Hatchett, Tyler Perry’s House of Payne and Meet the Browns, classic episodes of Soul Train and a variety of high quality movies. National programming will include the launch its first original series “Family Time.” The half-hour situation comedy was created by Bentley Kyle Evans (The Jamie Foxx Show, Martin, Love That Girl) and produced by Evans and partner Trenten Gumbs. Family Time centers around the life and times of The Stallworths, a working class African American family who scratches off a lottery ticket and jumps to middle class overnight. They’re an authentic picture of an African American family working to live the dream. This family-next-door consists of two loving parents: Anthony (Omar Gooding) and Lisa (Angell Conwell) Stallworth and their children Ebony (Jayla Calhoun) and Devin (Bentley Kyle Evans, Jr.) The Stallworths move to a middle class community in sunny southern California and both Anthony and Lisa bring baggage and other family

series development has been accelerated by the network’s skyrocketing distribution growth,” said Bounce TV Chief Operating Officer Jonathan Katz. “Family Time is the perfect way to launch Bounce TV’s originals, as Bentley Kyle Evans and Trenten Gumbs boast an amazing track record producing successful series for Fox, The WB and others and they’ve developed an irreverent sitcom in Family Time that addresses contemporary issues in a way that all parents can relate.” Bounce TV has teamed up with the creators of the hit film Think Like a Man to launch a second original comedy series. Bounce TV Uptown Comic Bounce plans to debut Uptown Comic, a half-hour series featuring standup performances and skits, on June 18 at 8:30 p.m. ET, following its new original sitcom Family Time. Uptown Comic is produced by Rainforest Films, founded by Rob Hardy and Will Packer, who will be executive producers. “We envision Uptown Comic combining the best elements of Def Comedy Jam and In Living Color,” said Packer, producer with Hardy of the movies Stomp the Yard, Obsessed and Takers, as well as Think Like a Man. “We think the

series is a great jumping-off point as we develop and produce more content for Bounce TV.” “Bounce TV is fast becoming a major entertainment force in the African American community and I’m honored to have Family Time become Bounce TV’s firstever original series,” commented Evans. “Family Time is truly unique in today’s television landscape as programming focused on the African American family is virtually nonexistent at the other broadcast networks,” said Gumbs. Evans and Gumbs are the producers of Love That Girl currently running on the TV One network. Evans has been in the unique position of executive producing two hit shows simultaneously, serving as the show-runner of FOX-TV’s smash hit Martin starring Martin Lawrence and The Jamie Foxx Show for The WB. As an actor Evans has appeared in such theatricals as Robert Townsend’s Hollywood Shuffle, Keenan Ivory Wayans’ I’m Gonna Get U Sucka, and House Party and guest appearances on such television series as Family Matters, Head of the Class, and Doogie Howser MD. Gooding is best known for appearing in television shows such as Hangin’ with Mr. Cooper, Smart Guy, Deadwood, Barbershop: The Series and Playmakers and also the films Ghost Dad and Baby Boy. What is JUNETEENTH? Juneteenth, or June 19th, 1865, is considered the date when the last slaves in America were freed. Although the rumors of freedom were widespread before this, actual emancipation did not come until General Gordon Granger rode into Galveston, Texas and issued General Order No. 3, on June 19th, almost two and a half years after President

Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation. But Didn’t the Emancipation Proclamation Free Us? President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on September 22nd, 1862, notifying the states in rebellion against the Union that if they did not cease their rebellion and return to the Union by January 1st, 1863, he would declare their slaves forever free. Needless to say, the proclamation was ignored by those states that seceded from the Union. Furthermore, the proclamation did not apply to those slave-holding states that did not rebel against the Union. As a result, about 800,000 slaves were unaffected by the provisions of the proclamation. It would take a civil war to enforce the Emancipation

Proclamation and the 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution to formally outlaw slavery in the United States. When is Juneteenth Celebrated? Juneteenth is celebrated annually, on June 19th, in more than 200 cities in the United States. Some cities sponsor week-long celebrations, culminating on June 19th, while others hold shorter celebrations. Why is Juneteenth Celebrated? It symbolizes the end of slavery. Juneteenth has come to symbolize for many African-Americans what the fourth of July symbolizes for all Americans -- Freedom. It serves as a historical milestone reminding Americans of the triumph of the human spirit over the cruelty of slavery. It honors those African-American ancestors who survived the inhumane institution of bondage, as well as demonstrating pride in the marvelous legacy of resistance and perseverance they left us. Why Not Just Celebrate the Fourth of July Like Other Americans? Blacks do celebrate the Fourth of July in honor of American Independence Day, but history reminds us that blacks were still enslaved when the United States obtained its independence. Why Were Slaves in Texas the Last to Know that They Were Free? During the Civil War, Texas did not experience any significant invasion by Union forces. Although the Union army made several attempts to invade Texas, they were thwarted by Confederate troops. As a result, slavery in Texas continued to thrive. In fact, because slavery in Texas experienced such a minor interruption in its operation, many slave owners from other slave-holding states brought their slaves to Texas to wait out the war. News of the emancipation was suppressed due to the overwhelming influence of slave owners.

Juneteenth commemorates President Lincoln’s signing of the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863, an act that began to free African Americans and Black indigenous natives of the northern continent. Almost two and a half years later, General Gordon Granger rode into Galveston Texas and read order number three freeing the remaining blacks of the union. This is the date recognized by 35 million African Americans throughout the nation as their Independence Day. and I came out with four children. And so: no education—no real job skills, and you got to feed your kids. You have to be willing to go through process and it’s not an easy one. And then at some level, you have to be able to trust somebody. If there’s one person who has a sincere desire to trust you, you have to trust that help.

About Human Trafficking

are inner city and on dru gs and homeless is a lie. I have a client who is 18 years old, was sold by her mother from the age of 6. She had four pregnancies before she was 13, and she has one living 7-yearold child now. She’s been been with us for over a year and we have her in a treatment program now. Even with her, when I seen the long-tem effects–because there was a parent who sold her—there is deep psycholigcal damage. And she still loves her mother. It’s her mother. How does someone put her or his life together again? Time. Oh, my gosh, it literally takes time. You have to begin to trust yourself. When I came out of prostitution, I went in a virgin

Human trafficking is a modern day form of slavery and is the second largest criminal industry in the world after drug dealing. In fact, many of the drug dealers have given up their routes in favor of the sex trade because it can be more lucrative. However, trafficking does not only include sex. Besides prostitution, pornography and exotic dancing, trafficking also involves labor exploitation such as domestic service, restaurant work, sweatshop factor work, or migrant agricultural work. The tools used are force, fraud and coercion. Overseas, the impoverished girls (and boys) are given hope and promise for new lives as actresses, models, marriage, or just a better life as American citizens. Domestically, it happens not only to runaways who get caught up in the sex slave trade because they are desperate for love and family, but young girls who are sold by family members or boyfriends

who turn on them. Not all end up as sex slaves. They might end up as workers in “sweat shops” forced to work for free to avoid repercussions against their family members or to “repay the people who have funded their way.” The mission of RAHAB’S HIDEAWAY is to comprehensively address the needs of teens and young adult female victims of Human Trafficking/prostitution, to provide them with the opportunity to envision a positive and productive future and to empower them to reach their goals. Today, Marlene runs six shelters in the Columbus, Ohio area. Each house holds only 14 girls – only a drop in the water compared to the victims that are out there. She also has a drop in house where the girls can come for a shower or a meal. “It’s a process getting them out because they see no other life and they are afraid. A lot of the girls suffer from Stockholm syndrome, where they fall in love with and start to excuse the actions of their captors. It can take years for the girls to understand that they are victims. Like victims of domestic violence, they are given to believe that everything is their fault. Carson’s desires is to develop appropriate responses to meet the needs of these victims; including, but not limited

to, the development of a model facility that can provide refuge and facilitate recovery. Such a facility could meet the needs of our community and provide a template, which if followed by others could extend the benefits of our good efforts across our country and around the world. On Thursday June 14, 2012 Rahab will partner with Rosemont to provide additional shelter for young girls who are a victim of human trafficking.

Questions to ask yourself if you are suspicious? How do you know a victim of trafficking? The answer is to look beneath the surface. Many victims do not speak English and do not understand the American culture. They seldom know what city they are in because they are force moved to avoid authorities. Most have a distrust of people not only because of what they have suffered, but because they fear deportation. Lastly, most do not see themselves as victims and do not realize that what is being done to them is wrong. Ask yourself, is the person accompanied by another person who seems to control the victim? (This is possibly the handler.) Is the person rarely allowed in public except for work? Do they have trouble – Continued on page 27

By adding a touch of color, your home can be transformed into a beautiful oasis—and you can achieve it all by yourself. To help master the art of interior painting, Ace Hardware’s Home Expert Lou Manfredini offers these easy-to-do painting tips: Color Matters: Finding the right color can oftentimes be the most difficult part of the painting process. Manfredini recommends you select colors that you are drawn to and compare them at different times of the day, under different lighting conditions. This will allow homeowners to get a good feel for how each color will look in the home. Also, consider bringing home a paint sample to validate how it looks with the lighting and tones of the room. The Art Is in the Tools: Invest in high-quality roller covers and brushes. Look for “woven” on the packaging, which provides superior, smooth coverage. For professional-grade paintbrushes, Manfredini recommends synthetic brushes high in polyester, such as Ace Supreme or Wooster’s Ultra Pro, because they are durable and hold their shape better. The Right Paint Is Key: For years, professional painters have advised homeowners to use a primer. Now, new premium paint technology means there are paint and primers in one that provide the same professional look but in half the time. One of these new paints, Clark+Kensington is specially formulated to deliver a smooth, professional finish and superior stain resistance that saves homeowners time and money. Available exclusively

at Ace Hardware, this paint line offers homeowners a sophisticated color palette of 120 colors that perfectly harmonize to create a cohesive flow throughout the home. Preparation Is Everything: Preparation is 90 percent of a successful paint job. Cover and protect furniture and floors with drop cloths, take some time to fill holes and cracks with spackle and then sand the area smooth. Make sure to spot prime the spackled areas with paint+primer in one and allow to dry. Next, wipe down all the surfaces with a damp cloth and apply painter’s tape, such as Scotch-Blue Painter’s Tape, to prevent paint from bleeding onto windows, doors and trim. Paint Like a Pro: After prepping the space properly, you’re ready to paint. Start by giving your paint a good stir with a stirring stick until the paint is uniform in thickness and appearance. When using a paintbrush, start by holding the metal band around the brush securely. Dip the brush about a third into the paint. Next, paint the wall with horizontal and vertical strokes. For a roller, fill a tray with about one-half inch of paint and dip the roller into the paint using short strokes to ensure all areas of the roller are covered. Then, in three- to four-foot sections, apply the paint in a “W” pattern. Always finish with light vertical strokes. Four Easy Ways Drivers Can Save Hundreds In Vehicle Ownership Cost

– Cont. from page 26

—Caring for your car can put you on the road to savings. In fact, a savvy consumer can save hundreds of dollars a year on automotive expenses without buying a new car or changing his or her lifestyle. All it takes is a little time and research, and the good sense to choose better-performing products.

The U.S. Department of Energy reports that underinflated tires can increase fuel consumption by up to 3 percent. One study estimates that 50−80 percent of the tires traveling on U.S. roads are underinflated. Surprisingly, car owners could save up to 2 billion gallons of gas each year by properly inflating their tires.

Here are some easy ways to save money and have your current car last longer: Spend More to Save More Upgrading to one of today’s modern high-performance motor oils can make a meaningful improvement to your car’s fuel economy and engine life. For instance, independent studies have documented that Royal Purple motor oil improves fuel economy by as much as 5 percent and can significantly reduce engine wear. Using high-performance synthetic motor oil, as opposed to conventional oils, also allows for more miles between oil changes, reducing maintenance costs and the amount of time spent out of service. You’ll pay a little more for premium motor oil, but the savings in fuel and reduced maintenance costs more than make up for the higher price. Find out more at www.royalpurple.com. Shop for the Best Rate One of the easiest ways to reduce the costs associated with your car is to shop around for insurance. Prices vary from company to company, so it pays to

do your homework. Get at least three price quotes. You can call companies directly or access information on the Internet. Your state’s insurance regulator may also provide price comparisons.

Other ways to reduce insurance costs can be found by visiting the Insurance Information Institute’s website at www2.iii.org/individuals/ autoinsurance/. –Continued on Next page

Properly Inflate

Keep it Clean A clogged air filter can increase fuel consumption by as much as 10 percent. Air filters keep impurities from damaging the interior of the engine, so replacing dirty filters will save gas and protect your engine. More tips to save money on fuel are available at www.fueleconomy. gov
