For many of us we will be making our New Year resolutions which we will work hard to keep. During the holidays many families will still be celebrating the holiday season under the social distancing requirements due to the Covid-19 virus and the flu. It is still suggested that we monitor our health to reduce risks of infection and transmission. December ushers in the holiday season in many homes across the globe and with so much to be thankful for, along with the observance of many other causes and honorable mentions this month, we are grateful for the readers that keep our magazine in circulation. This

Christmas

Chestnuts are roasting on an open fire, sleigh bells are ringing and good old St Nick is about to pay us a visit. Jack Frost may even be nipping at our noses! Isn’t it the most wonderful time of the year? It’s Christmas time in the city and floating in the air but was it always this way and where do the traditions come from. I did a little research online and found the following statistics. Some say that there is no Christian church with a tradition that Jesus was really born on December 25th ? In 1687 the Reverend Increase Mather of Boston observed that “the early Christians who first observed the Nativity on December 25 did not do so thinking that Christ was born in that Month, but because the Heathens’ Saturnalia was at that time kept in Rome, and they were willing to have those Pagan Holidays metamorphosed into Christian ones. Because of its known pagan origin, Christmas was banned by the Puritans and its observance was illegal in Massachusetts between 1659 and 1681.

My thoughts are that many who are excitedly preparing for their Christmas celebrations would prefer to not know about the holiday’s real significance. Even the invention of Santa Claus, deriving from St. Nicholas was simply a way of adding a wonderful surprise element to the holiday for children and no one can see the harm in that since it enhances the holiday season. So the music is lovely and lively, folks are smiling, children are excited and as it gets closer we surely forget the reason for the season. And the reason would be the debate of the century. What we should know for sure is that Christmastime should not only be about the decorations, the delicious and often times fattening foods, or the crazy traditions we hold so dear. It should not even be about the gift giving, or even the gift getting. We need to stop looking for the meaning of Christmas 4

outside of ourselves and the ones we love but start embracing our wonderful and wonder filled life. We shouldn’t eat so much that it becomes painful to move or look at ourselves in the mirror in the New Year. And we shouldn’t spend so much that next year’s bills have to take a back seat or we end up lighting candles because the good old electric company came to visit like Santa Claus did in December, but this time and this visitor was not bearing good gifts! Let us remember to shop smart, be safe, and spread love and cheer. My words to you this Christmas season is to enjoy your loved ones and have lots of wholesome fun with the folks that you hold dear. It’s Christmas time in the city and the country so spread the joy of the season to those in need. That is what it is all about. It’s all about that one simple little word. Joy! Spread Joy to all you encounter and allow it to last all year round. Feel joy for being alive. Be thankful for family and friends and instead of worrying about giving them something expensive give them the gift of you. Spend time with your parents that you may be blessed to still have. Share space and lasting memories with your children who think you are better than any celebrity. Catch up and reminisce with your best friend who you long to spend a day with but are often too busy to do so. Give of yourself, freely, with reckless abandon. And love; love one another and hold one another dearly. Watch great movies together, walk in the park, drink lots of eggnog and pray; thank God for giving us yet another wonderful year to reflect on and make grand plans to do it better next year. Merry Christmas to all and a happy, safe holiday season, from me and mine to you and yours! With kind regards, Catherine Tyson, MSW

TEMERIA RIVERS Temeria Rivers is an ambitious, multi-talented, young woman from Tampa, Florida, a Radio Personality and an Entrepreneur, who holds her Bachelor of Arts degree in Broadcasting Mass Communications from South Carolina State University. Rivers graduated from the University in the Spring of 2022, as Magna Cum Laude and served as a member in the Dr. Emily England Clyburn Honors College throughout her undergraduate years. Rivers is a well-rounded young woman in media and values her dreams while aiming for a high pedestal. Currently, Rivers is a PSA radio announcer at a local radio station in Orangeburg, South Carolina, WOCS 93.7 FM, The People’s Station. Her job is to provide local events and news to all listeners in Orangeburg County and its surrounding areas, where she writes her scripts, records and edits her own audios. “Being on the radio happened so unexpectedly in the most blessed way possible. I was presented with the opportunity to intern at WOCS 93.7 FM during my last semester of college and from there, my life has changed. It was one of the best things that have happened to me!” stated Rivers. “In the media industry, you have endless opportunities to grow within your craft and one door opens after another and as soon as you know it, you're skilled in

14

every avenue that there is,” added Rivers. Rivers’ day-to-day tasks do not stop here, though. She wears multiple hats, as she continues to adventure through her media journey postgraduation, as well as executing more business decisions. Rivers is the founder and CEO of Street Posh Collectors – Worlds Collide, LLC, a vintage, pre-loved clothing brand, started by herself and her mother. “The Mission of Street Posh Collectors - Worlds Collide, is for us to gather Vintage Streetwear and Posh wear items that we find and provide for sale for people to buy and style, and then the cycle repeats itself,” stated Rivers. She has a love for thrifted vintage items and wanted to provide that same joy for others, while also giving back to her community through charity. Street Posh will be available via an online store with hundreds of vintage clothing, such as T-shirts, jeans, hats, tote bags, dresses, skirts, heels, etc. Anything vintage can be found at Street Posh. Rivers will be launching the online store for Street Posh Collectors on October 1st of 2022. Rivers has always had an unconditional love for both fashion and media and wants to bridge the gap between

the two. She always wanted to bring fashion to the radio, so starting her own vintage brand was a step closer to doing so, in conjunction with her current knowledge of being On Air. As a child, moving into her teenage years, Rivers took confidence in what she wore as an outlet to express herself. She loves specifically Streetwear & Vintage fashion, with also a large love for sneakers, where she is commonly known amongst her peers for. She started modeling at a young age, taking after her mother who modeled for John Casablanca's, The Modeling Agency, in Florida. Growing up, Rivers went from walking the runway at local fashion shows in Orangeburg, SC, to being on the big screen in movie theaters all over the south of the USA. She landed a role in the movie titled Faith’s Song, of 2017. Her on screen journey continues as she lands another role in a film titled The Last Dime, of 2019. Prior to being on the big screen, Rivers took many acting classes and Drama camps throughout middle and high school, where she attended Orangeburg-Wilkinson High. On stage Play performances interested her as a child, so she took it to another level and entered successfully into the film industry.

to help positively guide each freshman class throughout their college experiences, starting in her sophomore year. She was also Chairman of two different committees on Campus Activities Board, the Promotions and Publications Committee, and the Coffeehouse Committee. Promotions and Publications had a lot to do with flyer making and social media managing, whereas Coffeehouse was to plan events for a more specific group of people like Poetry nights, game nights, and even fashion shows. Rivers had the pleasures of planning, promoting, and executing all major events for the university, which included Back to School Week, Homecoming Week, and Bulldog Fest. Allowing her to use her media skills firsthand, such as digital marketing, graphics, social media managing, and even event hosting. “Having the opportunity to emcee at events at SCSU, I found something else that I truly was good at, which is public speaking and engaging with others on a larger platform, such as a stage. Hosting and radio go hand and hand, so this opened another branch for me to explore, which I knew for certain in college that I wanted to pursue with being a radio personality after graduation which can lead me to other job titles like talk show hostess and TV announcer, and I indeed stuck to my plan,” mentioned Rivers. Rivers even became a talent on Bulldog News Now, the university’s News Broadcasting

When it was time to plan for college, Rivers chose to major in Broadcasting Mass Communications, to give the aspiring actress even more experience behind the camera, besides just being in front on the big screen. Her involvement at her Alma Mater, South Carolina State University, was one she will forever cherish. Rivers was involved in student body leadership all four years of her undergraduate life. Rivers joined The Communications Club, to create media for the University, The Fashion Merchandising Association, to become a model in the Spring 2019 Fashion Show. She also loved to mentor, so she joined Student Orientation Leaders,

crafts which will all lead me back to my first goal one day. This world is competitive, so being efficient in many skillsets in broadcasting is what sets me apart from others. The more you know and can prove, the better. Hard work does pay off and God will still give you the desires of your heart. You must tap into your talents, and he will guide you the whole way through,” stated Rivers, as she lives by her own word of wisdom. She continues to embark on her journey in the media and enjoys every step of the way, to make sure she is doing what she loves in life for a living.

Station, where she anchored, wrote scripts, filmed, operated cameras, edited footage, recorded voiceovers, etc. about news on and off campus. Her involvement did not stop there, along with many other organizations that she got involved in, she also adored community service and women leadership. Rivers became a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. The Twenty-Two-year-old is pursuing her dreams in media through every avenue tangible to her. Rivers is growing her own personal brand via social media, where she reached over 55,000 overall likes on her TikTok account, all by sharing her interests such as fashion and sneakers. She is her own social media manager from day-to-day. She continues to unlock new skills and ways to fulfill her career goals as a Radio/ TV show Hostess, a beginning franchise store owner of her vintage brand, Street Posh Collectors, and pursues bringing fashion to the media in an innovative way than ever. Rivers still wants to continue her journey on the big screen, as well. “The beautiful thing about being a woman in the media is that your goals are forever changing, and opportunities are always around you. You cannot sell yourself short in this industry just to one specific skill because somehow, someway I believe that everything will circle back the way in which you want it to, and you can look at your journey and say wow, I really created a roadmap to my successes. Just because my first goal was to be an actress, I fell in love with all media aspects from creating graphics, social media managing, to script writing, event hosting, the list continues. I am still perfecting my 16

Digging for by Tiffany Graber Groves for urban sentinel Many of us have experienced difficulties in life, difficulties that fill us with questions. When we want to know “Why is this happening to me?” “How much more of this can I take?” or “What could I have done differently?” we can easily feel lost and lonely. The answers to questions like these cannot be satisfied with an online search or by reading a book with relevant keywords in the title. If only we were so lucky. Finding meaning in our struggles is elusive. It requires patience to discover the tools and techniques that are best suited to support your individual journey. You must have the humility to take ownership of your flaws and mistakes and patience to allow yourself time to process your experiences and consider different perspectives. My journey toward peace and acceptance was pretty rocky. Like most, I experienced my fair share of difficulties, brought on by round after round of pain and disappointment. For example, my chosen career path never got off the ground, despite earning a master’s degree and landing my dream job in health communications. Only 10 short months after being hired, I was laid off and became one of the more than 15 million unemployed Americans during the Great Recession. It took 18 long months thereafter to secure permanent employment at a livable wage. Not long before that blow to my finances and burgeoning sense of purpose, I’d endured the loss of both of my parents three years apart while in my 20s. I was old enough to take care of myself but young enough to feel completely illequipped to live life without them. Their sudden deaths left me confused, broken, and full of questions. My mind swirled as I wondered “Why’d they have to go so soon?” “Why didn’t I have a chance to say goodbye?” and “Why wasn’t I a better daughter?” I perceived the answers to those questions to be 20

Joy

buried with them, leaving me with the feeling that they alone were the keepers of the peace I craved. In the midst of grieving over my mother’s passing, my marriage suddenly began to implode. I was heartbroken, abandoned, angry, and afraid. I wondered if God was punishing me. I knew I wasn’t perfect by any means, but my crimes certainly did not warrant this level of punishment. The tears fell, the weight dropped, and my chest literally ached. There was no one there to hold my hand and walk through the valley with me. The years that followed were particularly dark, as I struggled with grief, loneliness, insecurities, anxiety, and depression. I was blessed to remarry and expected to live happily ever after, as my new husband and I built our family. Finally, the puzzle pieces were coming together, and all of that pain would no longer matter. It would all be behind me now because I had my man by my side, and I’d soon have a baby in my belly, fulfilling my dreams of motherhood. All of the questions would stop swirling, and finding answers no longer mattered. Wrong. Biology had worked as it should. Trying to conceive at 39 years old did not lead to a Sarah, Hannah, or Elizabeth type of story for me. If those names do not sound familiar, they are Bible characters who had difficulty conceiving but ultimately gave birth. Since the science and technology did not exist to play a part in their conception stories, their outcomes were 100 percent attributable to a mighty move of God. Surely my faith, doctors, and tens of thousands of dollars of in vitro fertilization (IVF), a procedure whereby an egg is fertilized outside of the body, would yield the desired outcome, right? Wrong again. More questions. These shook up my faith, the very thing that

had kept me afloat throughout all of my previous struggles. I needed answers like I needed air. None of it made sense. I did all the things my faith, values, and Christian community suggested. I prayed, asked for repentance, paid tithes, said affirmations, spoke life into my eggs, picked out baby names, and made an online shopping wish-list of baby items. Anyone who has been through IVF knows how exhaustive and draining the actual process is. I dare not list all of the steps in the procedure or the two additional surgeries I required as part of my trying to conceive journey. While my hunger for understanding did not start with childlessness, it has been the biggest dragon to slay thus far. All of my inquiries have not been answered, but I can breathe now. I’ve dug into the tough stuff. Some holes are plugged and some things are still being worked through. One thing that made itself clear is that the journey of self-discovery is difficult. Finding meaning in my struggles caused much stress and restless nights. I used therapy, self-help books, meditation, and several other tools to support me on my quest for peace and self-awareness, but it did not appear that I was making progress. I was digging into the past with intentions of healing, while trying to live in the present and have hope for the future. Throughout my trials I discovered things that some might consider comforting. Others may find a nugget of wisdom to help one pick when or where to spend time digging into the tough stuff that life throws at us. Or, perhaps readers might receive confirmation that it is simply time for a respite. I invite you to dig into the next few paragraphs with an open mind. Depending on the context, digging can result in good or bad things. For example, when our favorite food is placed before us, and the cook announces, “dig in,” it triggers anticipation as we are seconds away from the first delicious bite. How exciting would it be to dig for long lost treasure? Digging also has negative connotations, mind you. Young men are warned to stay away from gold diggers. We have all seen a mafia movie that featured members of the family digging a hole to bury an enemy who crossed a line. Digging into our pain can be just as duplicitous. It leads to emotional highs, lows, moments of clarity, and further confusion. The point is that context is everything and nuance has its

22

place when one digs into the deeper things of life. Peeling back layers and looking beyond the obvious is not for the faint of heart. The worst part is you could reach what you expected to be the bottom of something only to discover more questions awaiting you. One of the first things to remember about digging into the deep is that you need several tools to get the job done. What’s in Your Toolbox? My toolbox is equipped with therapy, meditation, coaching, exercise, hot baths, Bob Marley and gospel songs, sermons, and good movies. A good toolbox should have items to help you dig as well as help you unwind, so that you’re energized to tackle the work again another day. Identify the resources that work best at keeping you in the game. It could be journaling, establishing boundaries, or reframing narratives, for example. Balance those tools with healthy ways to decompress. Rest and making time for fun are key when pursuing any goal. Be Selective When Choosing Where to Dig As a harsh self-critic, I often found myself preoccupied with how I was perceived and a need to be understood. This preoccupation led to much of my time being wasted overthinking interactions or explaining myself. There was a need to “set the record straight” or feelings of shame if I had not stood up for myself or my perspective on a situation. As I matured, I became more comfortable with being misunderstood. I realized that the people who wanted to understand me would seek clarity. It was a harder truth to accept that, while I had a need to be understood, it was not usually met by someone who genuinely cared to understand. Our time, energy, and peace of mind are precious. Consider the following before digging into a conflict with a family member, friend, or colleague. • Consider the value of the relationship. How important is the person in your life? Not everyone is worth spending your time and energy on to explain yourself to or clear the air. Also, what do you know to be true of the source? Is this just how they are? Have you been here with them before? Will this become just another argument? If so, put your shovel down. Whatever the problem is this time, it’s probably not worth digging into because the outcome will likely be the same as times past. • Consider the person’s language or tone. If emotionally charged or dramatic language is being used, the other party may not be in a position to truly hear

and understand. It may not be the time for a productive conversation that will lead to mutual understanding. • Are you equipped for the job? Remember those tools mentioned earlier? Is your toolbox equipped with the patience, proper words, self-awareness, or boundaries necessary for an effective dialogue? Protecting our peace is paramount. We should be careful not to inadvertently bury ourselves in the process of digging.

question such as “Is it time for us to upgrade our home?” and a real estate agent calls not long after, inquiring if you’re in the market for a new house. God winks are reminders that he’s been listening to you the entire time. We can’t force a God wink. I believe the winks are the answers to our prayers, the fruit of our labor, or the seeds that we have planted taking root. I think God winks come when we’ve done some digging to explore the answers to our “whys.”

Digging in Your Heels When we want something bad enough, our first inclination is to dig in our heels, stand firm, and fight for it. Life certainly takes a degree of tenacity to achieve success. Winning at life also requires wisdom to know when to hold ’em, when to fold ’em, when to walk away, and when to run. Just ask Alexa to play “The Gambler” by Kenny Rogers. The gambler understood that every hand was not a winning one and therefore was not worth betting on: It’s okay to fold sometimes. If you are selfaware, clear on your strengths, weaknesses, limitations, and boundaries, check in with yourself along the journey to assess if what you are pursuing still serves you, given everything you have learned. Has your interest shifted? Should your focus broaden or narrow? Humans are dynamic creatures. Why should we limit ourselves by being anchored to only one version of a goal? For example, while I am not a mother, I give mothering energy to family members, friends, my fur baby, and the students whom I volunteer to teach career success strategies to. Many women pursue IVF or other options that will literally make them mothers until they are successful. That was not right for me. It is okay to adjust to find what suits you, given your current place on your journey. It’s not about quitting or giving up; it’s about reinvesting your energy. There will be times that, despite faith, prayers, or sacrifices, a situation may call for the digging to stop and let go. That doesn’t mean the door is forever shut. It just means that it is time to open your heart and mind to other possibilities.

In the process of our digging, we may have stopped to enjoy some lemonade in the shade, which could have looked like putting our worries aside and living in the moment. Surely, there will be times where we will break our shovels, stump our toes, get rained on, and, out of frustration, decide we are done planting and give up expecting a bountiful harvest.

When the Good Stuff Starts to Show Up Did you know that Mother Earth sometimes gives up her precious resources without any human intervention? Diamonds, gemstones, oil, and gold can all be found on the Earth’s surface. I have experienced moments of clarity where I’ve received a sudden knowing or deep sense of peace about something. I will admit that these are not regular occurrences, but, when they happen, they are powerful. I like to call these “God winks.” A God wink occurs when you asked God a

That is until you’re inspired again by the sight of a beautiful flower and decide to try just one more time. After all of the starts and stops, pain and frustration, imagine birdwatching one day and noticing a sliver of green breaking through the soil. You laugh to yourself because a lot of work went into growing this wispy little sprout. Here it is, almost appearing out of nowhere on a day when we were more intrigued with the beauty of birds than flowers. That’s how it is sometimes. The answers appear when we aren’t looking, when we are making space to enjoy what we have and dancing to the silence. Digging is work. If we are digging, it’s because we believe it will yield results. Once we feel confident in the site of our excavation, we should approach our dig with the proper tool set, listen to our bodies, and take breaks when necessary. If it turns out that we need to shift a few inches to the left or right and start all over, that’s perfectly fine. We can’t lose sight of that original hole, though, because Mother Nature may push forth something special when we least expect it. Here’s to digging, releasing burdens, and finding the treasures it will surely yield in due season. BEY BRIGHT Touching your soul with a nostalgic vibe.

by Tanya Fulford for urban sentinel What’s in the name Bey Bright, “The Bad Boy of Indie Soul “- full name is Ali-Bey (Arab-African origin- meaning Greatest Prince) Bright- born during the peak of the black power movement to parents who must have known he’d live up to his name. Bey acknowledges God has given him various gifts, and he tries to live in that realm of a bold princely mindset. Bey is a creative visionary. Aside from being an artist who writes, sings, and produces, Bey is also an Author and Entrepreneur. He founded Bright Vision Entertainment and independently sold and streamed over 500,000 records worldwide. Bey is an Indie Soul Grammy Award-nominated music executive, record producer, songwriter, artist and entrepreneur. He has charted 11 consecutive Top 10 indie soul hits and two number-one albums in the UK between 2015-2021, with five top 30 hits on The Official Indie Soul Chart in the USA and The DRT Global Independent Chart between 2017 and 2021. His music can be heard on various platforms including BET, Sirius XM, SmoothJazz.com, Yahoo Music, AOL, I-Heart Radio, Live 365, DMX, Pandora, Muzak, Music Choice, WHUR FM 96.3, WPGC 95.5FM, Video Music Box, Voices of America, & NPR among others. Success comes at a cost – “You’ve got to see it through” According to Bey, “Music is in my DNA”. Fueled by his insatiable appetite for music and his fascination with the human mind, love and relationship, Bey has managed to belt out tunes that flow seamlessly with the likes of Johnny Gill and Eric Roberson. Bey’s appetite for music was fostered from infancy. As a child, his mother and father were music enthusiasts. Because of their 5-year age gap, Bey was fortunate enough to be immersed in the melodious tunes

24

from the likes of Frankie Lymon, The Teenagers, The O‘Jays, The Delfonics, The Spinners, Donna Summers, Evelyn “Champagne” King, Cheryl Lynn, and Rick James to name a few. Growing up in New York, Bey was exposed to rap and hip-hop. Bey’s displayed his talents long before he decided to delve into music wholeheartedly. As a child, his father and uncle were poets and performed on the weekends. At age 10, Bey and his cousins graced the stage as a hip-hop group known as “The Fabulous 4.” Bey was far from shy and loved the attention, especially from the ladies. The music bug truly

bit Bey in his early to mid-20s, and he began creating music independently. Bey believes every creative is an ego-driven creature, whether man woman or child. Bey realized he needed to check that ego to succeed, so he began by looking in the mirror and asking himself, "Am I as good as I think I am?" and "Do I have what it takes? ". He admits to being impatient and tired of being rejected. Bey pointed out that you're trying to put it out to the masses anytime you're doing anything creative. You're trying to get it cosigned by people in positions of power who have money to put behind you; you get a lot of no's, a lot of uncertainty, and a lot of people trying to take shots at you. It could be jealousy; it could be that they don't believe in you. It to be many things; they could not see your vision. In that barrage of "No's," Bey persevered and charged himself with taking his ego out of it. He relied on his religious background and the knowledge he garnered from various self-help books to take his ego out of it. Bey reflects on a quote from Wayne Dyer "The ego promotes turmoil because it wants to substantiate your separateness from everyone, including God. It will push you toward judgment and comparison and cause you to insist on being right and best. You know your highest self by listening to the voice that only wants you to be at peace." Bey embraced the idea that he could not do this alone, that collaboration was key and he would not allow his ego to stunt his growth. your highest self by listening to the voice that only wants you to be at peace.” Bey embraced the idea that he could not do this alone, that collaboration was key and he would not allow his ego to stunt his growth. Putting all egos aside, Bey put it all on the table. Through it all, he had his share of glows and grows. From fumbling his life savings and losing his marriage and family to creating a thriving business infrastructure, to which he has shared his blueprint for those striving for the same. After growing through rejection from the major labels who deemed him not good enough and consistently said “no,” Bey decided to bet on himself. He founded Bright Vision Entertainment in 2003 because of rejection. In the beginning years, Bey built what he considered a powerhouse team using his sixfigure budget, which was exhausted with little to no return by 2006. One would think Bey would stop. Can you imagine experiencing an abundance of defeat, pushing through

despite the naysayers, only to be driving down the highway on a beautiful evening in 2008, minding your own business and suddenly hearing a record you wrote and produced playing for the world to hear? It was at that moment Bey realized his sacrifices were not in vain. On the contrary, he persevered, took a step back, grouped and began rebuilding, ultimately leading to his music being streamed on Sirius XM. Couple that with landing an order for 30 CDs from the UK (Soul Brothers Records) for the same project. This was BIG and just the beginning. Having emerged through the fire, Bey birth “The Indie Hustle, A Step By Step Guide To Promote Your Music, Build Your Brand and Get Paid.” The Creative Process 2008 was also a year of revelation for Bey as he coined an acronym for R.E.A.L. (Responsible, Educated, Ambitious, Loving) as a result of various hearing women (family, friends, strangers) state their disdain with men by saying, “I just want a real man.” Intrigued with the psychology of it all, Bey set out to define what a woman meant by a real man. In that journey, he found that women wanted a man who was responsible, educated, ambitious and loving. Bey shared his reasoning in his 2009 publication, ”How to Attract a R.E.A.L. Man” (available on Amazon). The belief that LOVE is the strongest force in the universe and that getting back to love will solve a multitude of problems; inspires Bey to write and produce magic. Bey enjoys taking life experiences (not just his own) and writing about them in a positive light, going beyond the sex and focusing on the intimacy that exists between two people outside of the bedroom. Bey is a spontaneous writer who writes whenever, wherever the spirit moves him. Bey stepped out of the shadows and into the limelight when he performed “Your Love” (Soul Nostalgia Volume 1). Bey deems “Love Zone” his most personal ballot of his vast catalog. It spoke to being in a relationship that put him in a very different zone. This ballot was inspired by his various relationships. When asked about fan favorite “More Than Friends,” Bey shared it was not personal at all (as his belief is… well, we’ll leave it to you, the reader, to dive into his music to find out for yourselves). The project came out of the common conversation, “Can women and men just be friends.” This was not a vibe for Bey; it was a challenge. This ballot challenged him to turn something people may deal with daily into a vibe for many.

Bey, although residing on cloud nine with his many accolades and intercontinental fame is as humble as they come. Preshow he requires very little. Bey, starts off with prayer and meditation, moves on to sound check, back to prayer followed by his spoon of honey followed by a bottle of water, then on to the stage. Although Bey typically predetermines his set, he always leaves room to veer off course a little to give his fans a little more of what they want. For those of you wondering, Bey does prefer performing with a live band and tries to do so whenever the venue permits. As he states “Nothing beats

a live band, having a great band amplifies the set”. Some of his favorites to perform are “Vibe”, “Love Zone” “Body Can’t Lie” (all on Soul Nostalgia 3). Just to note “Body Can't Lie” challenged Bey to step out of his ole’skool comfort zone and connect with the times. With this ballot Bey, decided he would not stop growing, after reading an article that made reference to the notion that men tap out at 30 and tend to not adapt to change and embrace newness while women are forever evolving. When asked what’s on his current playlist and played the most, Bey pulled from his favorites: Marvin

Gaye, “If I Should Die Tonight”, Rick James, “Throwin’ Down”, Bobby Brown “Every Little Step I Take”, Guy, “I Like”, Mary J Blige, “Be Happy”. A few of Bey’s other favs include Jasmine Sullivan, who he loves and he founded Bright Vision Entertainment in a 2003 collaboration on a project with Ari Lennox. What’s Next Bey has a new single dropping January 4, 2023, titled “Just a Little Bit”. It’s a steppers groove, for the grown and sexy. From a company standpoint Bey is really trying to get into his music licensing: Bey is working to get his music heard by more people and through various platforms movies, TV, and streaming platforms. He plans to continue collaborating with various artist but has no desire to sign any artist under his label. He plans to continue building his already massive overseas fan base while tapping into the US market which is a bit more limited than the overseas market. Bey attributes his massive overseas fan based to the open market they have available, that is not bound to the stereo typical boundaries set by the US market regarding what and artist is. Over the years Bey is pleased that he is seeing the industry changing as a result of emerging independent artists.

Music, Beats & Life. 15 consecutive top 20 UK and USA indie soul hits. Two #1 albums on Amazon UK's R&B Best Sellers and Hot New Releases Chart. Bey also has a #1 independent soul album in the West Indies on the Grenada Soul Chart and a #1 record on the USA Urban Influencer R&B Soul Chart. In 2021 & 2022, Bey was an Indie Soul nominee for the "Peoples Choice Award" and Best Male Artist. He’s had two number one books on Amazon’s Independent Book Chart and been a featured guest on regional and national TV and radio programs. Among those who have featured Bey as a guest speaker include Angela Stribling, Bev Smith, Audrey Chapman, The Congressional Black Caucus, Ralph McDainels, Harold Fisher, Bobby Gailes, SiriusXM, WHURFM, and BET.

THE GREATNESS THAT LIES WITHIN:

Joshua Proby SPEAKS ABOUT HOPE AND FOCUS

In the faintest of moments, there is always hope. Without judgement or doubt, everyone deserves a chance to believe, dream, and capture opportunities. Joshua Proby, a North Carolina resident, has broken significant barriers to achieve great measurable success in his life and the life of others. His selfless guide to living is impressive and is a great deed to society. Joshua has made marks in and around North Carolina and other states in America. He has now started a journey to take his message of hope and encouragement to other parts of the world. Recently Joshua traveled to Copenhagen, Denmark. The World Prison Population List, published in December 2021, reports that there is an excess of 11.5 million prisoners worldwide. In 2015 the National Institute of Corrections reported that there were more than 10.35 million people incarcerated throughout the world with the most, approximately 2.2 million) being in the United States. This year, according to the organization ‘Across Walls’, most prisoners are men. Across Walls is an organization that published a public interest analysis on the sex ratio of prisoners across the world. Their April 2022 ortext found at www.acrosswalls. org indicates that as of 2010 about 15 men were in prison for every woman in prison. With this type of data in mind, it is almost impossible to imagine the thoughts, ideas, and in a far stretch of the context here, it is near impossible to relate, or even believe in the goals, aspirations, and dreams that the criminally involved citizens endeavor. But why not believe in them? Although inmates are considered poor, they are vastly

rich in hope. Let’s take a personal look at the success story of Joshua Proby. He is a published author, he is an entrepreneur, he is a public speaker, and he is creating opportunities for others through his company. Joshua’s message to the world is simple: “There will be things that will come against you. During these times we must not focus on what restricts us from being great. Our focus must be on the greatness that lies within us and our ability to not be restricted.” Joshua was incarcerated in 2006 and remained in prison for 12 years. He has been out of prison for four (4) years. He never let go of his focus. He created a plan to become one of the most inspirational people you will ever come to know. He began his work by starting a business that supports and provides for himself and his family. He understands the importance of finding stable work that is judgement free. Therefore, Joshua uses his business to hire and create income for former justice-involved citizens that need to earn a good, consistent living. Joshua holds his employees to high standards and does his best to educate and empower them on making the right choices and being committed to a positive lifestyle. Joshua created a workforce that establishes a sense of pride among his employees. Joshua believes that the justice system and those in a position to help reduce recidivism need to take some bold steps to assist formerly incarcerated citizens as they reenter society. “The credit needs (i.e., credit scores, credit availability, access

100,000 inhabitants – meaning there are approximately 3,635 number of prisoners and just over 3% are female. There are 47 prison facilities. Just like almost every place in the world, Denmark has certain things in place to help improve the lives of newly released inmates that have a desire to make positive changes. Joshua wants to travel to other countries to help people that are being released from prison learn how to become self-sufficient. One area that Joshua emphasizes as a potential platform to success is entrepreneurship. As a self-starter and a successful entrepreneur, Joshua knows how to avoid pitfalls, how to use available resources, and how to chart a path to becoming financially secure while building business and personal credit. Joshua says it all starts with one word: “Focus.” Joshua is a speaker that delivers a message that anyone can relate to. He speaks about survival, confidence, business, societal topics, personal growth, and recidivism. to credit worthy finances) of those that were incarcerated must be addressed. When the credit issues are addressed for each individual, that will help stabilize the three (3) main areas of a former inmate’s life: housing, transportation, and employment”. Every one needs a place to live, a way to get around independently, and a viable source of income. Joshua wants family members to lay aside the stigma and doubt that often accompanies the emotions surrounding their loved ones that come home from prison. For him, embracing his family was key and instrumental in his success. “I embrace relationships with family in a deeper way now,” says Joshua. Joshua visited Copenhagen, Denmark this past fall and found the country to be amazing! He visited a bookstore and donated his book, ‘The 30-Day Journey From Prison to Spiritual Peace’. He spent time learning about the city’s culture and history, and he indulged in the amazing fresh seafood of the city! Copenhagen is the capital city of Denmark and has a population of 5,789,957 (as of 2018) and the prison population incarceration rate is 63 per every
