Dazzling and intricate reams of fabric are draped over furniture, hinting at the final cut of the designer’s newest haute couture garment. Sewing machines so technically-advanced that they could be mistaken for a launch control display at NASA, glow in anticipation of merging fresh fabric into a new creation. Stacks of fashion magazines dot the environment.

Welcome to the fashion world of Augusta fashion designer Shannon Gregory, the creative genius behind the aspiring couture label — Shush Couture.

Inspired by the likes of Zelda Wynn Valdez (an AfricanAmerican designer who set up shop on NYC’s Broadway in 1948, costuming Dorothy Dandridge and Marian Anderson), Vera Wang and Stephen Burrows (who helped bring ethnic models such as Pat Cleveland to the runway), Gregory attended the Art Institute in Charlotte, graduating with a degree in fashion merchandising and management.

“Fashion is my life’s story, sewn up and hemmed in fabric,” Gregory expressed.

Fashionistas and wardrobe designers in the CSRA face a unique set of challenges in performing and displaying their craft – the lack of high-end fabric shops and the lack of professional modeling agencies are two of the biggest obstacles. Designers need a myriad of distinctive fabrics to sew and professional models to showcase their completed couture designs.

Gregory hasn’t allowed the challenges of living and working in a smaller city deter her from her goals. Challenges have inspired her to work even harder to make Shush Couture a recognizable brand in the industry. “My ultimate goal is to open my own design house where I can create custom pieces for those who dare to be different or who just can’t seem to find what their looking for!”

This week on Saturday evening at the downtown Augusta Marriot, Gregory will be presenting her new fashion line as part of Augusta Fashion Week. The event, known as the Designers Showcase, begins at 7pm. It will be her first runway presentation of her designs.

UPW visited Gregory to take a peek at her latest fashion creations and to find out the behind-the-scenes story behind this young designer.

My earliest fashion memory is visiting JB Whites when it was in the Regency Mall with my grandmother. She found a dress that piqued her interest, and decided that is was the wrong color. She was going to make it the way she wanted. We proceeded

to the fitting room where we turned the garment inside out and took notes. We left the department store and headed straight to the fabric store. She selected the color fabric she wanted and found a pattern Continued on next page

She laid out her newly-purchased fabric and began to piece it together. It later turned out to be a better version of the dress she originally wanted! It was at that moment, I knew that I wanted to do that!

How do you decide on a design concept for a new fashion piece?

I really don’t decide on new design pieces. I feel like the pieces choose me. Most of the time, I never know what I’m going make. Sometimes I get an idea or a look just comes to me and How would you describe your I try my best to recreate it exactly as I saw it. Sometimes it comes out as what fashion design style?

I would describe my fashion design I originally saw; sometime it comes style as “sexy-modern-retro”. I love out as something else. I never force it.

If I get stuck, I work on something else until it becomes clear to me what it is supposed to be.

What inspired you to become a fashion designer?

The inspiration came from watching my grandmother create fashion pieces. However, it wasn’t until after I dropped out of the nursing program at Georgia Military College, that I realized I could actually do it.

Why did you decide to present your work during Augusta Fashion Week (AFW)?

Augusta Fashion Week was brought to my attention by a friend who thought I would be interested. At the time, I was just finding my way back to fashion design. I knew I wanted to create a line and actually start to build a brand. This is a great way to show what I’m capable of creating at the first AFW. Do you think that Augusta has a growing fashion community?

I do think that Augusta has a growing fashion community. The younger generations are gravitating

towards fashion. They are expressing themselves through the clothes that they wear, and they want to capture their looks daily on social media.

They want to look different and they are starting to create the looks that they want. Photography has definitely grown as well, with many styles of photography available here. As far as models are concerned, I know of an Augusta native who appeared on America’s Next Top Model. Augusta is growing. I just hope it continues.

What is the biggest challenge you face as a fashion designer living in Augusta?

The biggest challenge I face is fabric choices. I often have to travel away to find fabrics that inspire me to create. I have the option to order online; however, I like to see and feel my fabric before I make a purchase. I enjoy being in fabric stores. I’m often inspired by the fabric itself.

What’s next on the horizon for Shush Couture?

After AFW, I’m headed to a show in Atlanta. I’m a featured artist for Raw: Natural Born Artist, which is an independent international arts organization. I’m currently planning my new line and hoping to start a new fashion tradition in the Virgin Islands.

Softball sophomore overcomes severe eye injury to return to competition

HILTON HEAD, SC Georgia Regents University sophomore softball player Kristen Mills was presented with the Peach Belt Conference Inspiration Award at the league’s annual meetings in Hilton Head on this week. Mills received the award, only the third ever handed out by the conference, for her extraordinary courage and determination in returning to action after suffering an injury that would have ended the career of most players.

After becoming a finalist for the GRU Freshman StudentAthlete of the Year in her first season in a Jaguar uniform, Mills took the field in January of 2014 to begin preseason practice for her sophomore campaign. The pitcher was throwing in practice when a come-back line drive, struck her in the eye.

Despite the best efforts of doctors and emergency personnel, she lost sight in her left eye.

In most sports — and especially in softball — the ability to hit or catch a moving ball requires two eyes.

Well, for most people.

“When people asked me if I was going to try to play softball again I realized the thought of me not playing had never crossed my mind,” said Mills. “Of course I was going to play softball again, it was my passion. The next question was if I was going to try to continue to pitch. Again my answer was of course I am. I could not let myself continue to play softball half way. If I was going to go back I was going to fully go back; pitching, hitting, fielding and everything. Why do something half way?”

Surgeries and doctors’ appointments followed, yet Mills was unwavering. So she began to work on restoring what sight she could. She work on getting the timing back with a bat in her hand. She worked on her pitches, knowing when the ball would break even without being able to see it clearly.

On Feb. 10, 2015, more than a year after that horrific accident, Kristen Mills stepped into the batter’s box, bat in hand, and began playing once again. “Softball is very much different for me now,” she said. “Things that came second nature to me before such as simply catching a ball or seeing a pitch to hit are now more difficult, but some extra work in order to continue the sport I love was a small price to pay.

She played in 15 games for the Jaguars this season, taking 11 at-bats and getting three hits. She also pitched in seven games, tossing 14.1 innings. But the numbers don’t matter.

The mere fact that she was there was enough. The GRU softball team had their best season in years, reaching the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2012. For inspiration, they needed to look no farther.

“I use my injury as a way to not only encourage athletes to wear the proper safety gear, but also to encourage people to continue reaching for their goals regardless of the obstacles they may face,” said Mills. “I see the world differently now, both literally and figuratively, and for that I am truly blessed.”

Making Proud Choices Workshop The Making Proud Choices Workshop focuses on teen pregnancy prevention and reduction in the risk of becoming infected with STDs and HIV. Male and female students between the ages of 15-19 who reside in Richmond County may participate.

As a self-taught artist, her style incorporates bold vibrant color and African inspired motifs. Her compositions often consist mainly of overlapping and/ or adjacent shapes created with saturated primary and secondary colors and earth tones.

This showing will take place in beautiful downtown Augusta at Humanitree House in the gallery that is named in her honor; 230 8th Street, Augusta, Georgia at 3:00-6:00 p.m. on a beautiful Sunday afternoon. Music and art have been pivotal to her life throughout adulthood, including earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Visual and Performing Arts. Vibrant colors have become her trademark. Her technique incorporates bold colors while often including African inspired motifs.

Augusta’s Turn On The Runway

By Vincent Hobbs Beautiful models, haute couture fashions, a runway, and hair and makeup stylists exhibiting their skills are the key ingredients to a dazzling fashion event. The downtown Augusta Marriot at the Convention Center will host an Augusta version of New York City’s Fashion Week glamour and glitz on Saturday night, May 30, at 7 pm.

Dubbed the “Designer’s Showcase”, the Augusta Fashion Week event will feature a variety of designers and beauty demonstrations.

Augusta Fashion Week (AFW) is the brainchild of men’s accessories fashion designer Zaccheus Miles. Known for his elegant, custom-made neckwear, such as bowties, neckties and ascots, Miles got the idea to create AFW after spending several years producing the ZM Annual Trunk Show. The trunk show, which showcased Miles’ personal designs, also created a platform for other creative individuals to display their talents. According to Miles, “Augusta Fashion Week allows those whom may have a passion for fashion and beauty to experience a wonderful full event. It also provides the opportunity for networking with industry professionals from around the world.”

Miles has tapped into an apparent hunger in the Augusta area for fashion-focused events.

“It was difficult at first to find models, but once word got out, we received many requests from models to participate. As we know, in fash-

ion, selecting models can be very strict. It was simpler to find designers – we made the announcement and the emails poured in!”

A bevy of designers will appear during the Designer’s Showcase, including local designer Shush Couture, the Charity Williamson Collection, Jthreadzzz, Jeakesona, and the Amir and Amira Zaccheus Miles Collection. There is also a hair and beauty segment with AFW’s featured salon, Spice of New York, along with independent hair stylist Eric Abney and makeup artist Cutoria Robinson. A special presentation, “The Dressing Room”, from celebrity makeup artist Kelvin Myers Boutique, is also slated for the event.

Miles is optimistic about Augusta’s potential to become a fashion mecca.

“I absolutely believe in Augusta’s future in the fashion industry! Believe or not, more people from Augusta really want this! With the growth of the city, it’s definitely possible.”

Her paintings have been exhibited at Vassar College, the Medical College of Georgia, Paine College, the Cotton Exchange Museum, Lucy Laney Museum, Empire State College and the Gertrude Herbert Institute of Art. Sala keeps her fingers on the pulse of the current flow of visual arts in Augusta by teaching visual arts to students who are underserved in the arts at the Jessye Norman School of the Arts.

Ray is a young man beloved by the City of Augusta beyond his successes as a professional boxer, due to his major dedication and devotion to the youngsters in the community of Augusta who are training

Some of the accomplishments he brings to the table include: being featured in USA Boxing Magazine; in 2002, he was the recipient of USA Boxing’s Michael Nunnery Character Award; and was the National Golden Gloves Champion. The full amount of deposit for one set will be refunded to each prime contractor who submits a bona fide bid upon return of such set in good condition within ten (10) days after date of opening bids. All other deposits will be refunded with deductions approximating cost of reproduction of documents upon return of same in good condition within ten (10) days after date of opening bid.

Contract, if awarded, will be on a lump sum basis. No bid may be withdrawn for a period of thirty-five (35) days after time has been called on the date of opening.

Bid must be accompanied by a bid bond in an amount not less than 5% of the base bid. Personal checks, certified checks, letters of credit, etc., are not acceptable. The successful bidder will be required to furnish performance and payment bonds in an amount equal to 100% of the contract price.

The Owner reserves the right to reject any and all bids and to waive technicalities and informalities.
