The clothes may be for men, but this boutique is for mankind

By Vincent Hobbs Libra Miller had seen the young homeless man before – sleeping in the doorway of an abandoned downtown building in broad daylight. What really struck her was the fact that he was young and could have easily been her peer. How could she help? Anybody could be in that situation, she thought.

Miller, owner of Fresco Men’s Boutique, would get her chance to help a short time later.

While walking into The Metro Market on Broad, Miller noticed the same young man looking at the display of cold drinks on a particularly hot day. She asked if he wanted something to eat. He quietly nodded his head, almost ashamed to receive the offer of help. Miller paid for a meal and tipped the clerk to make sure the young man was well-taken care of.

“Anybody could be in that situation. I never had a lot when I was growing up,” Miller shared. “I feel that anything we do in our community to help will inspire the next person to do something as well.”

Miller turned out to be a guardian angel of sorts for the

young man. She would see him again walking near the Eighth Street block where her business is located. It was a gloomy day and a rainstorm was imminent, based on the darkening skies and rumbling thunder. She called him over and asked him to try on a few hoodies, and gave him one that fit, as well as some other clothing items. A search for a pair of sneakers in the proper size (10 ½) was unsuccessful, but it’s next on the list for Miller.

Miller’s entire business philosophy can be summed up in this story of the homeless man.

“We should treat people, the way we want to be treated.

My main goal is to use this business to help people,” she said.

Entrepreneur Libra Miller bears the distinction of being one of the youngest Black female business owners in downtown Augusta. In business for six months, the 29-year-old has created a trend-setting men’s accessories and clothing shop that is part of the Eighth Street business renaissance, which has seen several new businesses open along the corridor between Ellis Street and Reynolds Street in recent months. Most are minority-owned.

Tell us about your background and education.

I was born in Monterey, California and raised in Augusta. I am an only child, raised by a single mother who joined the military at age 19. My mom had me at age 27 while she was stationed in California. My father is from Brooklyn, New York. I loved to play sports in school – basketball, soccer and softball, at both Butler and Westside High Schools. I also attended Augusta State University for two years as a Biology major.

Why did you decide to open a men’s fashion boutique in downtown Augusta?

I have always loved fashion! And it seems that men are more comfortable getting advice from a female when it comes to wardrobe choices.

Southside group vows to fight against any ‘business-as-usual’ SPLOST effort

By Frederick Benjamin Sr. UrbanProWeekly Political Analyst AUGUSTA A Southside citizens’ group vows that it won’t support any special-local-option-sales-tax (SPLOST) referendum that is too heavily weighted with downtown projects at the expense of infrastructure projects for the residents living in South Augusta.

Southside resident Les Morton is a representative of Communities First a citizens’ group whose purpose is to examine policies and procedures that affect communities and neighborhoods in South Augusta.

“People need to understand that South Richmond County pays the

most in taxes, but South Augusta is the last to get paid,” Morton said.

Morton, you might remember, was the concerned citizen who mounted a court challenge against the county for its past handling of SPLOST projects and in particular SPLOST 7 that was rejected by the voters over a year ago.

That rare SPLOST rejection threw the city’s finance’s into a free fall since the city had relied on those projected SPLOST revenues to complete funding the municipal building renovation.

That SPLOST rejection, on the heels of the ice storm cleanup costs, led to the city imposing a 1.75 millage increase last fall just to make ends meet.

But while the tax-increase enabled the city to pay some bills this year, it

wasn’t nearly enough.

An outcry from the business community prevented the commissioners from imposing a manufacturer’s excise tax in addition to the millage increase.

Instead, they passed the 2015 budget with the understanding that they could raise over $10 million from imposing a storm-water fee. Now, however, the commissioners have yet to pull the trigger on implementing the stormwater fee and some commissioners want the idea abandoned altogether in favor of rolling the storm water projects into the next SPLOST package.

Not so fast, says Morton. He has not heard enough talk about infrastructure projects for South Augusta in SPLOST 7, but he has heard about a

very expensive item being floated by the Coliseum Authority.

“It doesn’t make any sense to put $100 million into an entertainment complex when the infrastructure is screwed up. I’m going to fight this again,” Morton told UPW this week.

Besides tying his support for SPLOST 7 to significant South Augusta improvement projects, Morton says his group will soon be making proposals to the county commissioners about how to get the city’s DBE department a set of policies and procedures.

“Does the city really think that if they don’t adopt a new set of policies and procedures for DBE that the citizens are going to support SPLOST 7?”

Solutions to Augusta’s age-old problems

The issue of flooding is one of the ageold questions facing Augusta, along with public transit. I will mention clear and concise solutions for both:

TRANSIT I see transit as the lifeblood of any city. Transit and providing transportation to individuals without vehicles is not only viable to enticing business, but also promotes the spirit of providing city services.

It is past the time that commissioners stop kicking the can down the street and become VERY serious about improving transit. Firstly, the service needs to be brought in-house.

The heart and soul of the service exists with the city employees and bus drivers, not the revolving-door private companies that have made up the service over the past few years. There is also a city report that proves that it would be CHEAPER to bring the service in-house.

Secondly, the city needs to do all it can to promote transit. How often have you heard or read about transit in the newspaper or on TV? We want this city to grow, but it hasn’t because of apathy. If we’re going to solve Augusta’s age-old questions, we must approach them with an active, open mind and the BELIEF that the officials we elect will represent our concerns and interests.

If we don’t, our city and its residents will continue to experience another 40-year biblical phenomenon – wandering in the wilderness.

With the help of the CSRA, we are working on a concert for everyone - “Fresco Fest”. Maybe.

Do you face any unique challenges as a new business owner?

I’m green to the business world. It’s more of a passion. I’m not aware of all of the support channels available for small businesses owners, despite being business savvy. Overall, it’s a learning process. My faith and the community helps keep me fueled for the journey. You are only as strong as your foundation of people and community.

In 2008, a group of friends and I started a clothing brand named “Fortune Fly Hundred”. We wanted to focus on the individual who made a fashionable impression with simplicity. I quickly wanted to learn more about the fashion industry and I worked as an assistant manager at Deluxe Men’s Boutique, which closed roughly in 2012. I continued to be a sponge, soaking it all in by attending fashion events in Atlanta. I learned from individuals such as Frank Cooker, who was the buyer and creative force for Wish Atlanta Men’s Boutique.

While going down this path, I would hear people say “Augusta isn’t a big city” or “Augusta didn’t have this or that”. I felt that we embody a lot of what Atlanta or any other major city has to offer, because in fact we are a major city ourselves! Fresco is more than a boutique. We want to show our youth that the possibilities are endless. They are empowered to become their dreams.

Growth through grief

T

he recent tragic losses of Beau Biden and Dave Goldberg have brought grief and the grieving process into the public discourse over the past few weeks. That conversation has been heightened locally following the recent deaths of three young boys in a horrific car accident. How does one properly mourn so great a loss?

How does one go on?

June 7th marked the ninth anniversary of the sudden passing of my mother. I always feel a certain sad kinship with others who have lost their loved ones during this time of the year. The beginning of the summer is supposed to be met with childlike expectancy, filled with dreams of savoring the ocean breeze and days not anchored by responsibility and to-do lists.

Longer days and shorter nights bring about this unexplainable, but very palpable gladness. Brides plan their weddings. We celebrate moms, dads, graduates, and our nation’s independence. It just seems unnatural to lay someone to rest, especially

a young person, at such a naturally beautiful time. Their summers, our summers, will be forever darkened by loss.

My great-grandmother always proclaimed that “death is simply a part of living.”

She was right. What she did not share was that it would be the hardest part of living. I’m nobody’s grief counselor, but I’ve had the tremendously terrible task of burying both my mother and my father, and a number of other close family members.

Some would find it depressing to be so acquainted with death, but there are powerful lessons that come with mourning loved ones.

You come to learn that the dash in between the dates on your obituary is incredibly precious, important, and short. You learn that life is less about answers and more about experiences. You learn to make most of that brief dash. And with any luck, you will witness the kindness of strangers and learn what it really means to lean on a shoulder.

True friends are exposed with

great clarity and tears become an unlikely balm. You find that grief is as much about letting go as it is about holding on and, in time, you’ll find your way through it.

Death will visit each of us. When you think about it, it’s ironic that the thing that connects us the most as humans is the very thing that disconnects us from the one’s we love the most. There is no single universal piece of advice that one can give to survivors, but to those still dealing with the loss of someone so close, I’d offer the following: This thing that you are experiencing will feel unjust and you will feel slighted. You’ll get sick of that casket and visiting the funeral home.

You’ll become weary of well-wishers and their sympathy food. And in the quietest moment of your night as

you lay your head on your pillow, just before you close your puffy, somber eyes, the pain will hit you hardest. Let it hurt, cry yourself to sleep and pray to see your loved one again in your dreams. It doesn’t get better, because they are never coming back; but it does get easier as time passes.

Waking gets easier and before you know it, you get strong enough to mention their name without crying.

Don’t bother asking “why?” It’s a useless endeavor and your time is too precious. The best parting gift that you can give to the dead is to live the remainder of your life fearlessly, challenging every doubt, and reaching for your wildest dreams.

Our leaders need support American citizens ought to be more encouraging and less critical of local and national leaders. Increasingly, the majority of criticisms directed at those in positions of leadership have not been constructive, but destructive. Most are rooted in ignorance, jealousy, envy, hatred, phobias, and many types of isms. To the proud originators of destructive criticism the words of President Theodore Roosevelt are most applicable.

In a speech titled, Citizenship in a Republic, Roosevelt said, “It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood;
