I’ve been in many demonstrations all across the south, but I can say that I had never seen, even in Mississippi, mobs as hostile and as hate-filled as in Chicago.

Why was Dr. King in Chicago?

In 1962, in response to growing recognition of de facto segregation of public schools and housing availability, the Coordinating Council of Community Organizations (CCCO) was founded in Chicago. This council included the Chicago Urban League, the Chicago NAACP, and the Woodlawn Organization. CCCO elected Albert (Al) Raby, a local teacher, to organize and convene the group.

In 1965, Mr. Raby invited Dr. Martin Luther King Jr and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference

(SCLC) to tour Chicago and witness the spatial segregation of this northern city.

In July of 1965, the SCLC and the CCCO marched together on Chicago’s City Hall, demanding a more open city for African Americans. In September 1965 the SCLC formally announced the intent to target Chicago for their next campaign. Together with the CCCO, the SCLC began the Chicago Freedom Movement.

SCLC staffers, with James Bevel and other Chicago civil rights activists, began organizing in Chicago’s West Side. At this time the West Side was

King believed that nonviolent direct action could work in the North as well as the South.

King and the other movement participants wanted desegregation of housing and schools in Chicago. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr often referred to this as an “opening” of the city.

KING IN CHICAGO: In the mid 1060s, the civil rights movement in the south had scored some major victories. Dr. King and SCLC made a strategic decision to confront the evils of racism, economic injustice and the war in Vietnam that continued to tear at the fabric of American society.

In 1966, the CCCO and SCLC hosted a number of marches through African American neighborhoods, seeking to spread awareness of the horrendous housing discrepancies. In the summer of 1966 CCCO and SCLC organizers decided to increase visibility of the movement, and specifically target housing discrim-

After the rally, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. led a group of approximately 5,000 people to the Chicago City Hall where he posted a list of demands to make Chicago a more open city for African Americans.

His demands included a call to cease discrimination in mortgage and loan assessment, and to invest in improving public housing.

During this time the SCLC and CCCO chose to hold more marches in allwhite neighborhoods. White residents were resistant to protesters and violence ensued. During a march of 200 civil rights protesters in the white community of South Deering on August 21, 1966 some 1,500 white residents lined the streets.

Protesters threw bricks, stones, bottles, and obscenities at protesters. A police force of approximately 450 sought to keep order and arrested some 16 white residents.

Shortly after the South Deering march, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr addressed a group of students and identified Cicero, Chicago as the SCLC and CCCO’s next sight for a march. He announced that “Not only are we going to walk in Cicero, we’re going to work in Cicero and we’re Continued on next page

On a muggy Friday afternoon in July 1966, Martin Luther King Jr. stepped out of the car that had ferried him to Marquette Park on Chicago’s Southwest Side to lead a march of about 700 people. The civil-rights leader and his supporters were in the white ethnic enclave to protest housing segregation. Thousands of jeering, taunting whites had gathered.

As King marched, someone hurled a stone. It struck King on the head. Stunned, he fell to one knee. He stayed on the ground for several seconds. As he rose, aides and bodyguards surrounded him to protect him from the rocks, bottles and firecrackers that rained down on the demonstrators. King was one of 30 people who were injured; the disturbance resulted in 40 arrests.

going to live in Cicero.” Cicero, a community of approximately 70,000 white middle class residents, had been targeted as a march site due to incredible violence that erupted there in 1951 when an African American bus driver attempted to buy an apartment.

Fearing the possibility of violence, Christy S. Berkes, the town attorney of Cicero sent messages to civil rights leaders and legislators with a desire to meet before the planned march.

Though by some accounts King was originally resistant to the meeting, a summit between the mayor, governor, legislators, and civil rights leaders was held on August 26, 1966.

At the August 26, 1966, meeting the civil rights leaders and local politicians

arranged the Summit Agreement. King agreed to halt marches into all-white neighborhoods and to postpone indefinitely the planned march in Cicero.

In exchange, the city agreed to supply far-reaching guarantees for open housing for African Americans. Governor Otto Kerner announced that he had canceled plans to mobilize the Illinois National Guard for the Cicero march.

Despite Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s appeal to cease marching, a group of about 1,000 activists proceeded to march on Cicero over Labor Day Weekend in September 1966. The march was formally led by CORE. White residents again threw debris and attacked protesters. Some protesters responded violently. Governor Kerner called in 2,250 National Guardsmen. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was said to be disgusted by the violence.

In May 1967 the Leadership Council for Metropolitan Open Communities, a product of the August 26 Summit Agreement, launched “Project: Good

Neighbor,” a massive fair housing education campaign. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr declared that no more demonstrations were necessary and the SCLC and CCCO formally ended the Chicago Freedom Movement. This policy had incomplete success, and much spatial housing segregation remained.

Mulholland’s unwavering fight for civil rights as a Freedom Rider brought her face-to-face with the Ku Klux Klan as well as time on death row in Mississippi’s State Penitentiary. She also participated in pivot-

al events in the civil rights movement including the March on Washington, which she helped organize, and the Woolworth’s lunch counter sit-in in Mississippi in 1963.

Mulholland’s experiences were highlighted in the documentary An Ordinary Hero, and Augusta University will host a free screening of the award-winning film at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 14, in the university’s Jaguar Student Activities Center Ballroom. Josey-Murphey merger meeting leaves more questions than answers Five-minute forum frustrates parents

By Ken Makin Special to Urban Pro Weekly AUGUSTA An information meeting held at the Board of Education building Monday evening was designed to answer questions about the pending merger between T.W. Josey High School and Murphey Middle School.

The meeting left residents with more questions than answers after the forum, which set aside an hour’s worth of time from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., was adjourned after five minutes.

“It had been a long time since we had gotten ever yone together and updated them on the progress of the merger,” explained Kaden Jacobs, the Communication and Community Engagement Manager for the Richmond County School System. “The intention was never for the meeting to be an hour. . . At this point, there are a lot of final decisions that haven’t been made.”

The explanation did little to soothe heartburn from residents looking for answers.

“I think it was a joke,” said concerned citizen Gwen Utley in an interview with W RDW News Channel 12. “A lot of people got off their jobs to come here for the meeting. …Right now, they feel the same way they did when they

came.”

According to Jacobs, an important point of reference in regards to the meeting was to address rumors of a “name change” involving the two schools. In a correspondence letter to those concerns sent out last week, the following was explained: “To be clear, T.W. Josey Comprehensive High School will remain T.W. Josey Comprehensive High School, along with its colors, mascot, logos, traditions, and history. Murphey Middle School will remain Murphey Middle School, along with its colors, mascot, logos, traditions, and history. However, Murphey Middle School will relocate to the Josey campus located on 15th Street for the start of the 20172018 school year.”

In that same letter, the times for the meeting were set between 6 p.m. and 7 p.m.

The primary concern of many residents is the merging of a middle school and high school, which could create age-related conflicts.

“Many parents are concerned about 11-year-olds and 18-year-olds being in the same building,” Jacobs said. “The safety of our students is the number one, most important thing for us.”

The merger is a part of RCSS’ “rightsizing” initiative, which has been in the works for two years.

ast week, I received an email from Richmond County School System (RCSS) officials in regards to the pending/proposed merger between T.W. Josey Comprehensive High School and Murphey Middle School: “To be clear, T.W. Josey Comprehensive High School will remain T.W. Josey Comprehensive High School, along with its colors, mascot, logos, traditions, and history. Murphey Middle School will remain Murphey Middle School, along with its colors, mascot, logos, traditions, and history. However, Murphey Middle School will relocate to the Josey campus located on 15th Street for the start of the 2017-2018 school year.”

Now, pay attention to the following quote, because this is important.

“There will be an informational meeting about the Josey/Murphey merger on January 11, 2016 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in the RCBOE Board Room at the Central Office.”

I, like many Augustans, looked at this meeting as an opportunity to receive information about the merger. We also saw this as an opportunity to hear from the community in regards to various concerns, including the fear of potential interactions between 11-year-olds and 18-year-olds (or older).

You can imagine my disappointment, and the disappointment of many others, when we arrived at the meeting around 6:05 p.m., only to hear that the meeting had been adjourned.

My initial response to this obvious chess move by school officials was to vent on social media. Twenty-four hours later, after I researched the merger further and spoke with officials, I understood two things: • The purpose of the meeting was to specifically address concerns about the retention of “colors, mascot, logos, traditions and history.”

• The only “sure” thing about the merger is that Murphey Middle School will relocate to the Josey campus on 15th Street for the start of the 20172018 school year, per the correspondence from the school system.
