From the Headmaster

T

here has been much coverage in the national press in recent months about the poor performance of boys relative to girls in our schools. Data collated from the plethora of summer examinations taken up and down the country every year by 7, 11, 16 and 18 year-old pupils tell us that the boys are lagging behind. Whilst it is a well known fact that boys are on a slower developmental path than girls, the imbalance can be ironed out by the time a boy reaches the top of his prep school at the age of 13. Indeed, I would suggest that the boys-only prep schools achieve this in many instances much sooner still because everything we do is part of the tried and tested formula that has been proven to work so well for boys down the years.

This edition of the Arnold House School magazine will tell you all you need to know about the busy and inspirational Arnold

House environment within which the boys are encouraged to participate and contribute towards. It is said that ‘variety is the spice of life’ and this is certainly true for Arnold House boys, as I hope you will see in

the pages that follow.

Academic and Scholarship Success

W

e can feel justly proud of our Year 8 boys who have successfully negotiated their way through the rigours of their final exams to secure places at the most sought-after independent schools in the country.

Of the 257 Common Entrance papers taken in English, Maths, Science, French, Latin, Ancient Greek, History, Geography and Religious Studies, 83% were graded A or B and 51% graded A – a record that stands comparison with the outstanding achievements of leavers in recent years.

The competition for places in the leading independent schools grows fiercer by the year. These results confirm, however, that Arnold House boys not only win their places but do so in some style and gain inclusion in higher sets when they arrive.

The key to this success is threefold: the commitment of the boys, the support from parents, and the expertise and guidance of the teaching staff as the boys progress through the school.

Particular congratulations must go to the five boys who had the honour of being entered for scholarships: - - - - - - (Music), - - - - - - (Sports and All-rounder), and - - - - - - (Music) all performed strongly and will have benefited greatly from their experiences. To the delight of us all, - - - - (Cricket) and - - - - - (English) were recognised for their talent and potential by St Edward’s, Oxford, and Mill Hill respectively. - - - - - - - was also rewarded by Harrow with the Clay Prize for his outstanding set of Common Entrance results.

Staff News George Lester I first met George in 1982 when he joined the staff of Arnold House as a General Subjects teacher in the Middle School. A fresh faced and very tanned young father of two small boys and the son of a high ranking Cleric in the Church of England was welcomed into the community. George had come back to the UK after a period of teaching and Missionary work in Kenya. We, as a small staff in those days, welcomed his

youth, drive and enthusiasm and his ability to coach games.

George immediately made his mark and was hugely respected by the boys. Many of the male staff were fairly “mature” and it must have been very refreshing for the boys to have a young master to teach them. Such was his skill, that the late Johnnie Clegg, the Headmaster at the time, encouraged him to teach a multiplicity of subjects including Latin, which was Johnnie’s area of expertise.

George rose to the challenge but freely admitted that having looked at the text book he could only take the Latin course up to Page 37!

When one teaches a variety of subjects every morning and then coaches Hockey in the afternoons, life can never be boring, but there are huge drawbacks too – namely reports! Poor George had more reports to write than anyone else on the staff and he laboured over these term by term. They were all handwritten in those days and George’s report writing was admired by all. I have often known members of staff

“crib” some of his phrases and incorporate them into their own reports. When JC reprimanded the staff for their “rather thin” reports, they were always encouraged to take the lead from Mr Lester and try to follow his example!

Chere Hunter Ex Head of Junior School and RS Teacher (1980 – 2008)

George was always the life and soul of every party we had – and there were many in those days, both at school and at Johnnie and Gillie’s house in Hampstead. He was warm, witty, and rather naughty but a great conversationalist and also a good listener who kept everyone amused until the wine had been flowing for too long and then he would go very quiet indeed! Even after a “heavy” night, George would be bounding up the stairs to the staff room the next morning. George was always in charge of the bar at school plays and concerts and it’s not surprising that even to this day the staff corkscrew is kept in his pigeon hole!

Laura Hutchings ‘How did your initiation day at your new school go, Laura?’ ‘Actually, it was pretty scary. They seem to expect me to be Deputy Head, Director of Studies, Head of English and, er - Headmaster’s wife.’ All which roles she will doubtless discharge with aplomb, with time enough for a sliver of Deep Space Nine before twilight.

Laura, with her background in state education, was the first to admit that she rather defied the stereotypes. Not one for the snug conservatism that can permeate English prep schools, nor a bulwark of the ‘let’s take executive decisions over a pint

George was always proud of his Hockey boys and took them all over London and the Home Counties to play matches. Sadly, following a serious back operation he was unable to continue with this and his days of bounding up the stairs were also over.

George is probably the most unambitious man I have ever met. He never wanted to be a Deputy Head or a Headmaster, all he wanted was to do what he had been trained for – to teach children in a classroom. I suspect that Viv Thomas had a huge task on his hands getting George to agree to cover for Elena Gregoriou-Ostojic’s maternity leave some years ago and to head up the Middle school. Viv was successful and what a great job George did. He was firm, fair, organised and compassionate and I know how much the boys benefited from his excellent pastoral care.

George has decided to retire from full time teaching, but has agreed to come back to assist on a part time basis. We wish him and his beautiful wife Diane a very happy and blessed semi – retirement and I hope for

by Laura is a testament to the universality of her appeal. The boys knew she would champion their cause, but never defend the indefensible. She would bat away the silly or 5

Staff News importunate with a wave or disapproving smile: majesty without hauteur. (And this wasn’t reserved merely for the boys, I can testify). She has the wit to be mildly subversive, but the sense to exercise it with propriety.

Recognising that the ambitions of all staff cannot be satisfied in a small institution, Laura has left us to pursue them at Dorset House. Her leaving was engineered with typical grace; rejoicing in the cause of it, while commiserating in the fact. Boys and parents rose as one at Prize Giving. The standing ovation has become a ghastly cliché, Hollywood rhetoric. For once, hyperbole was not misapplied.

Mark Maddocks Dayne Matthews It hardly seems as if a day has passed since Dayne Matthews started at Arnold House. Despite arriving with a certain air of mystery and intrigue, (rumours of his previous employment in an Australian meat processing factory caused a few raised eyebrows!) it was clear from day one that Dayne is a very talented individual. Both staff and boys have been very lucky to have had the opportunity to work with him.

His diffident and unassuming approach conceals the many strings that he has to his bow, but you don’t have to spend long in his company to realise that this rugbyplaying, guitar-strumming, easy-going Kiwi can pretty much turn his hand to anything.

Despite the relatively short time that he has been with us, he will leave a lasting legacy.

It has been an enormous pleasure and privilege to have Dayne as part of our Arnold House team; we are sorry to see him go but of course wish him all the very best in Qatar where he will continue his international career. E haere rā, ka kite anō!

Lizzie Jones Sam Gibson Sam Gibson, PE and Games Teacher, became a popular member of the Arnold House School community during his eighteen month stay, because of his friendly personality, his engaging lessons and his desire to immerse himself into life at Arnold House. Sam made many contributions across the board. He coached the 1st XV rugby side with great enthusiasm and he also ran a wide range of clubs including the very popular ‘Strength and Conditioning Club’. Sam also led the school ski trip and

accompanied the Year 8’s on their Activity Week to the Lake District. He will be missed by everyone at Arnold House. We all wish him well for the next chapter of his life in Vietnam where he will be teaching in an International School.

Chris Kerr Lorna Wint-Boydon Lorna joined Arnold House in 1999 with a wealth of experience in catering and hospitality. She brought new direction and menus to the school whilst driving us forward into the new millennium.

She greatly enjoyed thinking up menus for our themed days and managed to make the

food interesting whilst introducing the boys to different cultures and cuisines. Lorna was a true team player and encouraged her staff to join in with costumes, flags and music for these special events. She took care of

the catering at all evening functions, Prize Givings, Sports Days, Concerts, Governors meetings, to name but a few. Part of her job was also to supervise the cleaners and to make sure Arnold House was spick and span at all times.

Even though she was officially employed

by Sodexo, Lorna was truly valued as an honorary member of the Arnold House staff.

Testament to this was her big leaving party, where many past and present members of staff came to wish her well. Lorna has left us to go to Notting Hill Prep, where I hear she is making a big impact. Her presence was indeed felt in all areas of the school and we wish her well and know that we will remain in touch.

Penny Williams Jackie Ravden Jackie Ravden started Arnold House in the Spring Term of 2009, working as a Teaching Assistant in Year 2. The boys warmed to her immediately. Her bubbly but caring nature shone through and she took to the job effortlessly. As the academic year progressed, Jackie continued to support the boys on a one to one basis, helping them to achieve more independence in all areas of the curriculum. She was a great asset to the Year 2 teachers with whom she worked closely, especially during the

Staff News to her family in Prague. As both a colleague and a friend she has been an absolute pleasure to work with. Petra is an enormous loss to Arnold House but we all wish her every success and happiness in her next challenge whatever it may be!

recent Inspection. In September 2009 Jackie moved across to Year 1 where she continued working with the younger boys and supporting the teachers in all areas of school life. Jackie left Arnold House at Christmas to support her own family more.

She has been a great teaching assistant and we all wish her the best of luck in the future.

Sarah Ramsbottom Petra Chomoutova Petra arrived at Arnold House in January 2008 and quickly became popular with both the staff and the boys. She worked tirelessly in Year 4 under the guidance of Annabel Batty until I was able to steal her away to the Pre-Prep! Again she quickly established herself as a committed member of the team, whether using her enormous artistic flair around the classroom or working with the boys. Petra always maintained the same level of patience, kindness, encouragement and praise with everyone that she worked with and instinctively knew how to help the boys realise their potential. Petra had been in England for over 5 years so it was no real surprise to me that although it was a hard decision, she felt it was time to return home

Ieva Jauna From the moment she arrived at Arnold House, Ieva’s infectious enthusiasm was apparent in all she did, from putting up new displays on corridor walls, to working with groups of children within the classroom. Her immensely warm and

Alex Clubb Alex Clubb was with us in the Spring, having been a pupil at Colfe’s School in South East London, where he developed his rugby skills. He is now pursuing a career in medicine. We wish him every success for the future. friendly personality meant that it took no time at all for her to develop close and successful working relationships with both staff and boys – all of whom were very sad to see her move on to New Zealand to be with Ryan, her Kiwi partner. Despite being at Arnold House for a relatively short time, Ieva definitely made her mark and set an enormously high standard for future assistants; she is greatly missed but news on the grapevine is that she is loving life down under!

This twist of fate, however, allowed the staff and boys to enjoy Jamie’s company in the summer term. He too, plans to travel.

Salvete New staff As always, this year we welcomed a number of new staff. Paul Swinden, who replaced Kate Davies as Director of Music, soon put his stamp on the Music Department by introducing a bank of Apple Macs in order to make music technology an integral part of the curriculum for the boys. He has also worked hard with the Chapel Choir, even composing his own anthem for the St Michael’s Day service.

Ed Arghebant came to us as a Teaching Assistant in Year 4 and his calm and highly professional manner with both boys and staff was soon noticed. He is someone who will be a great asset to the teaching profession in the future and he will be given some classes of his own in the new academic year. We also welcomed two other teaching assistants.

In the Admin Department, Deborah Sedler has been of great value as Administration Officer, always willing to turn her hand to anything and to help out. In addition she is a highly gifted viola player and has supported the playing of boys in the School orchestra and other music groups.

Jenny Lyons, who replaced Edward Harrison as Head of Science, quickly settled into the role with great enthusiasm and energy. She has introduced a greater range of experimental work. Her love of the subject is clear for all to see and she is keen that boys too share her passion for Science.

Lucy Kettlewell is working as a teaching assistant in Year 1. She has a lovely manner with the boys and is a great help in the Pre-Prep; she is also a talented artist and this skill is invaluable in display and other work in the classrooms.

Weddings and babies David Marks married his long term partner, Jackie Moss, in Marylebone Town Hall and had a reception at The Orrery at the end of December, returning to start the new term as Mr Moss-Marks.

Sarah Ramsbottom married Michael Mackay at the end of August in the Berkshire church where her mother is the rector; the Bishop of Reading took the ceremony, which was followed by a reception in The Elcot Park Hotel, Hungerford.

Congratulations to Stephanie Miller and her husband, Nick, on the birth of their son Raphael (known as Rafi) at the Hospital of St John and St Elizabeth on June 26th.

WELCOME

Development The Arnold House Bursary Scheme Bursaries are now available to new entrants to the School in Years 5, 6 or 7. Such awards are intended to extend the benefits of an Arnold House education to boys whose families would not otherwise be able to afford the School fees. A comprehensive process for bursary applications has now been set up including specific open evenings, assessment exams, interviews and taster days.

From September 2010 we will provide three bursary places to boys with sound academic potential and strong personal qualities who will contribute fully to the wider life of the School. All bursaries are means-tested and can be awarded to supplement the contribution made by parents or to cover the full cost of fees, uniform and extras each term.

Bursaries are funded through a combination of the School’s fee income and donations from current and former parents, old boys and friends of the School. By September 2015, it is hoped that the number of bursary places available at any one time in the senior years at Arnold House will increase to eight.

Throughout the coming year, the Arnold House Board of Friends aims to develop a number of fund raising initiatives needed to engage support from the wider Arnold House community towards the bursary scheme’s long-term success.

The George Smart Society The George Smart Society is for people who have committed to remember the School in their wills. Supporters who provide the School with a bequest automatically become members of the society, named after former Headmaster, George Smart (1939-69), who was instrumental in turning the School into an educational charitable trust. Starting in the new year, the School aims to honour the members of the George Smart Society at an annual lunch.

The Annual Fund The Annual Fund is a key part of the School’s development effort and was created as an immediate source of finance for small projects and specific items which directly enhance the teaching and learning environment. The Parents’ Association

T

he Arnold House Parents’ Association aims to provide a link between the School and each and every Arnold House family. The school community prides itself on welcoming all parents, and the Parents’ Association, by running a number of social events throughout the year, aims to promote friendship, support and harmony throughout the school. Whilst the main focus is a social one, the Parents’ Association also works hard to support and organise fundraising for the various charities chosen annually.

The Autumn Term The main focal point of the year is the event which the Parents’ Association organises during the autumn term. Following the success of the Autumn Festival two years ago, we now alternate each year between an Autumn Festival and a Christmas Bazaar.

Last November was the turn of the Autumn Festival, which once again gave us the opportunity to utilise the wonderful facilities that we are so lucky to have at Canons Park. This event offers both the boys and their parents the chance to catch up with their friends and enjoy an array of activities and delicious food.

Entertainment this year included a mystical Aladdin’s Den, with our very own resident Aladdin, handing out gifts to the younger children. In the classrooms parents organised a variety of activities for the younger boys, such as Arts and Crafts and cupcake decorating. A magician entertained and mystified the crowds and a Face Painter transformed the children - beautiful fairy and princess adornments for the girls and the usual array of horrific looking war wounds for our boys! Attractions in the main hall included a tombola, a variety of fairground 12

attractions such as Tin Can Alley and Crossbow Shooting, Guess the Exotic Food, and Crazy Cola Hoopla. There was plenty of good food and mulled wine to warm us all up on such a cold November afternoon, with light snacks provided by Year 7 and a BBQ organised by Year 8. As usual, the boys in Years 5 to 8 set up their own stalls, organising activities such as mini golf, buzz wire and lucky dip, remote control cars and gliders, treasure map, Krispy Kremes and Popcorn stalls. The boys’ stalls raised just over £2,750, which was donated to the boys’ chosen International Charity this year, The Homestead in South Africa.

Unfortunately the weather was against us.

Although the outdoor activities had to be abandoned, due to gale force winds and teeming rain, it is at times like this that we realise how fortunate we are to have the help of Rick Martin and his team at Canons Park who sagely suggested in advance that we have a “ wet weather plan”. His calm planning kept us all from despair and ensured the day ended in a bang, literally, with a fantastic fireworks display. A wonderful ending to a truly great day.

The autumn term is always a busy one for the Parents’ Association and this year was no exception. We organised a Gift Wrap Sale through Northbrook Wrapping in the lead up to Christmas, giving parents the opportunity to stock up on their wrapping paper and cards and we raised £550 for The Homestead.

Parents baked an amazing selection of cakes in October for a mid morning tuck shop in the Undercroft to support the school on Charity Day in October. Whilst the boys avidly filled their plates with cupcakes, doughnuts and biscuits, the teachers looked on anxiously, worrying how they would survive the rest of the day following the inevitable sugar rush! All for a good cause, however and, together with a collection on the day, a further £2500 was raised for The Homestead.

The Spring Term The spring term is generally a quieter one for the Parents’ Association, except for the Disco Committee who organise the annual disco for the boys in Years 6, 7 and 8. The Arnold House disco, now famous in the girls’ schools of North London, sees the school gym transformed for just one night into a nightclub, complete with disco ball, fabulous decorations, plenty of refreshments for adults and children alike, and most importantly, an abundance of girls. It is always truly amazing to see the metamorphosis of our boys before our very eyes - teeth brushed, shirts tucked in, hair combed and even shoes cleaned! The boys talk of nothing else in the lead up to the event and spend the week afterwards comparing how many phone numbers they have managed to collect. Everybody always has a wonderful time and tickets sell out in a flash.

We were also involved in another Charity Day, in February, this time to support a UK based charity which Arnold House supports, St. John’s Hospice. The Parents’ Association organised a Freddo Chocolate raffle, with one prize for the boys in the lower school and another for the boys in the upper school. Tickets sold very well, as not only was the chocolate in demand but boys were given the chance to win a portable DVD player donated by the Parents’ Association.

The Freddo sale raised just under £800.

The Summer Term During the summer term the Parents’ Association organised an Internet Safety talk for the boys in Years 5 to 8. This followed on from a very success Internet Safety talk which we organised for the parents of older boys last year.

The summer term is generally a busy time not just for the boys but also for the parents. For the Parents’ Association this is a social time with end of year class dinners, organised by the class reps, alongside school events such as Sports Day, end of year concerts and gymnastics displays.

The Parents’ Association Throughout the year the Parents’ Association gives gifts to teachers who are leaving, or who are getting married or have had a baby.

They also organise a Teacher Appreciation gift for a longstanding member of the school community. This year was the turn of Mr Cuthbertson who has nurtured the musical talents of many of our sons for so many years.

As with all committees it is very much a team effort, and I would like to thank all the class reps for their help and support over this past year. Everything that we do on the Parents’ Association is only made successful by the parent body and the community spirit that is so strong at Arnold House. I feel very privileged to have been involved and I shall certainly miss the buzz and excitement of organising so many varied and fun filled

events. I wish the incoming team the very best of luck; I know that Tessa Laws as Chair, together with Candice Cresswell at her side as Deputy Chair, will do a wonderful job. I also thank those who are moving on and have been so helpful, especially Samantha Wainstein and Claire Lipman.

I had many enjoyable visits to the School during the year but two stand out in my mind. The first was when I went up to Canons Park and saw the First XI cruise to victory over Notting Hill Prep. To my untutored eye, the standard of play was remarkable with Arnold House outplaying the opposition in all departments with some excellent bowling from Guy Bouchier and skipper - - - - - wonderful wicketkeeping by - - - - - - and some stylish batting from all three of them. The second was when I happened to appear on the day that the Verse Speaking Competition was taking place in the ASL auditorium. What an occasion! It was an hour or so of pure entertainment as the winning entry from each class stepped forward to recite his chosen piece...everything from William

Shakespeare to Lewis Carroll. There were some fantastic feats of memory.... unimaginable when you get past a certain age! And then the solo performances were followed by an eclectic offering of form recitals – if there was a common denominator, enthusiasm apart, it was a healthy dose of good old school boy humour. I thoroughly enjoyed it all as did fellow Governor, Jo Hearnden, who was one of the judges. We were just left thinking.... wouldn’t lots of parents enjoy the occasion as much as we did? Who knows, if the Headmaster reads this, he might open the doors to a wider audience!

A

fter the school inspection last year, it was a relatively uneventful year for the Governors. One of our main objectives remained to press ahead with bursaries – both financing them and identifying suitable candidates. We made good progress on both fronts, with generous support from parents and some very helpful input from one of our Governors, Ken Durham, Headmaster of UCS. Who would have thought that one of the best ways of attracting candidates was to advertise in local libraries and doctors’ surgeries? That is what he recommended and that is what worked. Two new bursary candidates join us in September so we are gradually building up our population of bursary pupils, an essential requirement to meet the Charity Commission’s public benefit rules.

ince starting my role as Chef Manager at Arnold House in November I have thoroughly enjoyed myself.

I was glad to be involved in the school’s Haiti appeal, for which we spent a busy morning baking biscuits to sell at break time.

We also were able to experiment with some

more exciting food for the South Africanthemed charity day and Chinese New Year.

Over my years of cooking I have prepared food for all sorts of people including the Queen, Maggie Thatcher and numerous film stars. In terms of job satisfaction, however, the boys at Arnold House beat them all as my top customers just with the looks on their faces when they realise they’ve been

served one of their favourite meals.

I’ve had the opportunity to work with a diverse and lively team without whom I would not have enjoyed the same success.

I’d like to thank them all, as well as the staff, parents and especially the boys for making me feel so welcome at Arnold House.

Canons Park Activity Centre

I

t is Monday morning of the final week of the summer term and I have been prompted to write a review of the year at Canons Park. I am finding it difficult to make a start and to do something different. My job must be unique. I really do have to wear many hats. Already this morning I have been a caretaker (putting tables and chairs away in the hall left over from the cricket and tennis festival on Saturday), a groundsman (helping Paul getting the ground ready for house matches this afternoon) and a secretary (setting up a first aid course at Canons Park for a group of students from university who are studying acupuncture).

This afternoon I may even teach!

This is the third full year at Canons Park and we have found a rhythm that is governed by the needs of the school, the local community and the weather. In the depths of this winter, except for trying to clear snow, all was on hold but as spring approached and we had cricket squares, bowling greens, the outfield and a whole host of events to manage and cater for, our working week has become like that of an express train approaching its final station.

We will get to the end of term, but it is a roller coaster ride on the way with little time to pause. This morning I do feel we have arrived!

The summer holidays have a tempo of their own and we can wind down and take our time preparing for the football season in September.

It is a small team of individuals at Canons Park but I am very grateful for all their help and dedicated approach. I think I should give a special mention to our groundsman, Paul, who has done such a wonderful job over the last year. I know just how hard he has worked, not only keep the grounds in such good condition but also always being on the lookout to improve things still further wherever possible.

From the Library Head Librarian’s Column Over the years there are several things that one gets used to in the library: the inevitable stampede for the new sequel; the constant bickering about the daily ‘word mixer’ and the understanding that ‘Chess for Beginners 2.5 – Opening Gambits’ will never be borrowed. The library is not just a place for reading but a very social area, for when the quiet area just isn’t quiet enough (not that the library will be), it’s a place to have a talk about Plato or simply to ponder why Shabby left the Big Brother House. I have loved every minute of being Head Librarian; finding the little ones books and talking to the older boys about how Toy Story revolutionised the world!

However the person who has made the library such a enjoyable and lively place is the wonderful librarian, Leonie, who deserves all the praise she gets and more. Of all the things at Arnold House the Library is the one I am going to miss the most and I only hope that future Years take full advantage of it and make it into everything it deserves to be. I’m sure that - - - - - - will have an enjoyable and plentiful time as Head Librarian and be as helpful as he normally is – I wish him lots of luck!

From the Library One of the most useful skills in the world is that of being able to read; after all, life would be tricky without being able to decode road signs, read cereal packets and interpret instruction manuals. Everyone should be able to read a newspaper – broadsheet as well as tabloid – and read how and when to take medicines. These are essential skills, useful for keeping us alive, both physically and mentally. Then there are the other things reading is handy for, such as understanding sub-titled movies, sighing over love letters, laughing at cartoons, reading birthday cards and all those notes left on the fridge.

Reading is delight, education, exhilaration, understanding, laughter, tears and connection with the wide world around us.

For me, and for anyone else who has ever curled up with a book and disappeared into another world, reading is simply one of life’s most enduring pleasures.

It is that one belief – that reading is fun – which underpins everything the Arnold House Library does. Through classes, breaks and extra-curricular activities such as the Kids’ Lit Quiz and Booked Up, reading is shown to be smart, fun and very cool.

Throughout their time at Arnold House, boys are helped, guided, pushed, cajoled and, hopefully, inspired to read as much and as widely as possible.

If any parent asks me for advice about reading, there are a few basics that I offer as standard: take an interest in your child’s reading; be seen to read yourself; have

books around the house; join a library (public libraries are great for holiday activities and reading groups as well as borrowing); set aside time for reading as a family activity; don’t push your child into too sophisticated choices; don’t be scornful of their choices (the choices are theirs, not yours!) and listen if your child wants to talk enthusiastically about whatever book they are in the middle of.

Lastly – and most importantly - read to your child. It is never too early to start and there is never a time to finish. Read when they only understand the rhythm in the language and the joy you imbue the words with. Read when they are puzzling out the words for themselves. Read when they are keen, happy readers in their own right.

Read them books that are too hard for them to read on their own, or books that are simply ones they want to share with you – easy or not. Once again, your enthusiasm works wonders. A child seeing their parent enjoying words, laughing at funny situations in books, being moved by sad ones, will take on board that reading is a pleasure.

Something grown-ups do. Something people they love and respect do. As the people they love and respect most in the world, your influence is unbounded – use it!

There are few things more delightful than seeing a child glowing with enthusiasm over a just-finished book. It is even better when they then share that excitement with their peers. If that happens? Well, the library considers its job well done.

Visit from Guy Bass

n Monday 5th October, an author called Guy Bass came to visit Years 3 and 4. Guy told us all about his Dinkin Dings and Gormy Ruckles books.

Dinkin is scared of everything except Arthur the Ghost, Edgar the Skeleton and Herbert the Monster. Dinkin is very good at inventing things. One day a new neighbour moves in. The new girl is a Zombalien (Dinkin is scared of Zombalians) so Dinkin makes a Zombertron 2000 to suck off the

Guy bought the Zombertron 2000 in to show us – a saucepan with holes in with a camera on the top with mirrors and a sink plunger. - - - - volunteered to take part in a demonstration. He de-masked the Zombalien with the plunger, took a picture of it and then scared it off with its own reflection - - - - - and - - - also went to the front and dressed up as Herbert, Edgar and Arthur. It was so funny.

Guy’s other character Gormy Ruckles is a cute fluffy two foot monster who tries to be a real monster, like his dad.

Kids’ Lit Quiz

n Wednesday 18th November the Year 7 and Year 8 teams went up to Broxbourne High School to take part in the annual ‘Kid’s Lit. Quiz’. The coach was so huge that Leonie and the Year 7 team up at the front of the coach needed to phone

Ms. Hutchings if we wanted to speak to her! Before in class we had heats of forty questions to see who would be in the team.

--- -- --- ---- --- --- - - and their sub - - - - - - - When we got to the school and sat down at our tables some authors came over and gave us pens and cool postcards about their books. We also met the founder of the quiz – Wayne Mills! Soon after we were asked which category we were going to play our joker on (a joker doubles your points on the round you play it on.) Both teams chose Harry Potter, and so did most of the teams.

Categories included Harry Potter, Metals and Pigs – which we had actually practised on the coach! Both teams did especially well on Metals with the Year 8 team winning that round! The Year 7 team didn’t do that well on Fairy Tales with our team only getting one point! The subs had a mini competition between themselves and - - from Year 7 won! Altogether City of London School for Girls came first but we all did pretty well and had a great time! Thanks so much to Miss Hutchings and Leonie for organising an amazing afternoon out!

Grandparents’ Open Day

n Friday 14th May, Arnold House opened its doors to grandparents and close relatives of boys in Years 1 – 6.

Visitors were given the opportunity to look round the School guided by some of the older boys and then join their grandson in class before enjoying tea and cake in

Verse Speaking

O

n Friday 20th March the Arnold House boys hurried into the American School’s magnificent theatre for the annual Verse Speaking competition. There was a real sense of occasion with the young Year 3 boys experiencing the event for the first time and the Year 8’s enjoying their last Verse-Speaking competition.

The judges for this year’s competition were The Headmeaster, Mrs Jo Hearden (a longserving governor of Arnold House) and - - - - - - an old Head Boy of the school and co-Editor on Leonie Flynn’s ‘Ultimate Book Guides’.

The proceedings started, as always, with the individual entries. In the Lower School, - - - - - - - had the tough task of opening the competition with ‘When Frankenstein was Just a Kid’ by Kenn Nesbitt.

Other entries came from - - - - - - and ‘The Aliens Have Landed’ again by Kenn Nesbitt; ‘The School Goalie’s Reasons Why’ by Brian Moss; sadly Kiran Weston was unwell on the day, so couldn’t give us his version of ‘I’m the Dog who Didn’t Win a Prize’ by Pam Ayres. The standard was high but the judges decided in favour of - - - - - - for his initial entry.

In Years 5 and 6 the entries came from: - - - - - - - with ‘Crocodile Farm’ by Roger McGough; All My Great Excuses’by Kenn Nesbitt, read by - - - - - - - ‘The Horrible Headmonster’ by Wes Magee, delivered by - - - - - - - - - and ‘My Weird Family’ by Roger McGough, - - - - - entry. In the end, the judges had the invidious task of deciding between the - - - brothers, so although - - - - came out as the winner, the - - - family would

have been a divided camp on that particular Friday evening.

The competition between Years 7 and 8 was begun by - - - - - - - - - with his roller-coaster reading of ‘The Highwayman’

by Alfred Noyes. This set a high standard but the other entries managed to sustain - - - brilliance: he was followed by - - - - - - - - with Lewis Carroll’s ‘Jabberwocky’; - - - - - - reading ‘This be the Verse’ by Philip Larkin; and finally, the ultimate winner, with a haunting version of ‘Drummer Hodge’ by Thomas Hardy, read by

--- --The second half of the competition saw some interesting and highly entertaining entries. Here, each form from 3L to 8M had the chance to show us the full range of their talents. First, from the Lower School, came 3L with ‘Please, Sir’ by Peter Dixon; they were followed by 3J with ‘The Monster that Ate the Universe’ by Roger Stevens; 4B’s entry was ‘Mrs Batty’s in a Mood Today’ by Jez Alborough (adapted by Mrs Batty). Finally, and with the winning entry, came 4C and ‘The Whoopee Cushion Waiting’ by Paul Cookson (adapted by David Cox).

and the judges took a while over their deliberations. The winners in this group were 5B, although 6S deserved a special mention.

As ever, Years 7 and 8 tackled some difficult poems and managed to produce a surprisingly varied set of performances.

8H offered a dark, threatening recitation, hoodies-and-all, of ‘Education for Leisure’

by Carol Anne Duffy. Other entries in the Upper School were 7K with ‘Kubla Khan’ by Samuel Taylor Coleridge; the anonymous‘It’s Up to You’ performed by 7H; and the technically complex ‘Technologic’ by Daft Punk/Anon performed by 8M. Prizes were awarded: flowers were presented, and then it was time to return to Arnold House for a well-deserved break.

Many thanks to the judges and all the boys who took part. This is a valuable and recognised occasion in the school calendar.

In the Middle School, there were some idiosyncratic offerings, none more so than the poem delivered by 6S, ‘The Lambton Worm’ by CM Leumane. They were joined in this category by 5B who performed (it was far more than a ‘reading’) ‘Cakes in the Staffroom’ by Brian Moses; 5M with ‘All the World’s a Stage’ by William Shakespeare; and 6F’s soldierly ‘Proud Boys of AH’ by Paul Greedus. T

he boys at Arnold House have been as busy as ever this year producing an array of ICT projects from graphics to word processing and spreadsheet modelling to desk-top publishing.

This year, we have introduced touch typing in Year 4 using the BBC Schools’ Dance Mat Typing web site. The online course was enthusiastically completed by all the boys and will now become a permanent part of the ICT curriculum in Year 4. The following programs are highly recommended for further developing touch typing skills from the age of 8: Englishtype Junior, Englishtype Senior, Typing Instructor for Kids and Typing Instructor Deluxe.

The most exciting addition to the ICT curriculum has been the introduction of Dell Netbooks in the senior school. We rolled out 57 Netbooks set up to log on to the new AHS wireless network. The Netbooks are stored in recharging trolleys in the Years 7 and 8 form rooms where the boys collect them during registration and return them at the end of the day. The Netbooks have been used across a range of subjects but have proved particularly valuable in supporting learning in Geography, History, Religious Studies, Maths and Science. We will be extending the use of the Netbooks into the Compass Course next year for Years 5 and 6.

ell done to all the members of the ICT Club this year who worked incredibly hard on putting together three more successful issues of the Whizz Kidz! magazine. A total of over £40 raised from sales goes to our international charity for this year, ‘The Homestead’.

We hope that continued interest in the club and the magazine means that Whizz Kidz! can go on to produce its 8th issue next year!

T

hroughout the 2009-2010 school year, Arnold House continued to support a variety of worthy causes through various activities and events at the School.

In addition to the local, national and international charities supported the School also decided to focus it’s attention on the plight of Haiti following the devastating earthquake.

Locally, we have continued to develop our relationships with the St John’s Hospice, the Barbara Brosnan Centre and Father Rob Wickham’s parish in Hackney. Through the sale of the SJH Easter and Christmas toys, a Hats and Wigs themed charity day and a number of church collections, the School has made a contribution towards the purchase of much needed new equipment for the hospice. The School choir entertained residents of the Barbara Brosnan Centre with a varied musical recital during the summer term and

they look forward to visiting them again at Christmas.

As in previous years, the boys also filled shoe boxes with presents that were distributed to the homeless in Hackney for Christmas.

‘Hope and Homes for Children’ work together with children, their families and communities across Central and Eastern Europe and Africa to ensure that children grow up in an environment where they have the opportunity to fulfill their potential. They move children out of institutions into family-based care, help keep together families at risk of breakdown – due to the pressures of poverty, disease or conflict – and work to prevent child abandonment.

On an international level, the boys chose to support The Homestead (Projects for Street Children based in South Africa).

In addition to a number of activities and events at the School including a South African themed day and a Rugby 6 Nations Cup competition, a number of families visited The Homestead whilst in South Africa at Christmas. The Parents Association also made a significant donation to The Homestead following a very successful Autumn Festival at Canons Park in November. As a result of our fundraising, the Homestead have been able to start building a new childrens’ home.

At the end of the summer term, the Year 6 boys researched a number of international charities as part of the Compass Course. The best presentations were presented to the whole school and boys in Years 3 to 7 voted

Drama Years 1 - 2 e have had a busy and exciting year in the Pre-Prep Drama Department, starting off with the Harvest Festival with some beautiful singing from the boys. This was closely followed by the Nativity Play at the end of the autumn term, when the boys demonstrated their natural talent for performance.

In the spring term we had a chance to work with some professional actors, who helped the boys to brush up on their performing skills.

During the summer term everyone in the Pre-Prep had to work extremely hard in preparation for the summer concert.

We chose “Alex in Wonderland” for the production based on Lewis Carroll’s infamous story. The hard work paid off and we thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The boys had a chance to show what they are really capable of. We have had the pleasure of witnessing some truly stunning acting over the year.

Well done, boys, a very successful year! A big thank you to Aneta Struzik Mazur and Lucy Kettlewell for all their hard work!

Sarah Ramsbottom and Yuliya Boyarin 1R and 2B Form Teachers Years 3-8 Years 3-5 have now had a year of drama, one lesson per week in which they have worked on drama skills, involving games and activities aimed at honing their group work and ability to use their bodies in

creative, controlled ways. Working on themes ranging from Dinosaurs to the Sutton Hoo discoveries; from Boudicca to Physical Theatre, the boys have developed the ability to work successfully out of the classroom and to use space effectively.

Running independently of the drama lessons, Years 5 and 6 Drama Club has run throughout the year. This has been an opportunity once a week for the boys (usually a core group of 10) to perform in front of each other, work on storylines, develop games and exercises that are fun and stretch their drama skills and understanding. Group work is the main focus: boys have worked in pairs and in small groups.

For the second year running, the Year 6 Compass / Drama focus in the spring term has been a big success. Half of the boys in Year 6 worked for half of the Compass session on writing short plays and developing their ideas based on creation myths from around the world, with Mrs Bahra and Mrs Ruda. Meanwhile in the gym, with Mr Moss-Marks and Mr Maddocks, the other half of the year group worked on drama skills and on rehearsals of two short plays based on Greek myths. Half way through the afternoon, the boys swapped over.

Last year they produced ‘Pandora’s Box’ and ‘The Race to Live’ while this year the plays were ‘For the Sake of Love’ and ‘The Riddle of the Sphinx’. At the Compass Presentation afternoon, the parents were treated to a showing of the plays and a chance to browse through the completed playscripts. The boys practised their parts with great energy and managed to keep their nerves in spite of the lack of time available for rehearsal and preparation for the performance day.

they have worked with theatre practitioner and actress, Wendy Windle, alongside Mr Moss-Marks. They discovered many new and exciting drama skills including object manipulation and LeCoq acting techniques. They then began to prepare for a performance of a devised piece of theatre, based on Aesop’s Fables. Finally, the boys performed in front of parents in late June, to much acclaim.

Towards the end of the summer term, the boys in Year 7 were given the chance to audition for the Shakespeare Schools Festival production of ‘Julius Caesar’. Last November, the Year 8 boys all took part in a production of ‘Macbeth’ at the Unicorn Theatre in Southwark, in front of 300 people (made up of parents, friends and members of the public). This current Year 7 are entering the Festival in a slightly different way: a small group of about 12 boys will perform in November, again at the Unicorn Theatre; they will be supported by a ‘Technical Team’ who will help with costumes, props, lighting and marketing of the play.

Overall, it has been an eventful year for this fledgling department, taking small but significant steps. Given the amount of drama previously on offer, this year’s progress has represented a quantum leap for the school. It has been an exciting year for Arnold House drama and one of tremendous achievement for the boys.

Activities Review

T

he activities programme at Arnold House continues to go from strength to strength. I counted forty sessions of clubs, activities and music groups that were listed in the summer term calendar, which for a small school is quite amazing.

The boys are presented with a wide range of opportunities to enjoy and learn about activities that do not fall within the traditional curriculum. Every member of staff contributes to the activity programme.

Ju Jitsu under the expert supervision of Steven Nichols is now well established and many of the boys passed their tests to receive new belts in July. Chess is very popular and now takes place three evenings

hess Club was a great success last year, with so many boys displaying their enthusiasm each week to learn strategy and tactics as well as sportsmanship.

In the first half of the year - - - - - - won the School Championship, breaking - - - - - - impressive run of victories.

- - impressed all with his competitive and yet easy going nature. Last term saw a three way tie for first place between - - - - - - - - - - - and - - - - - - - With lots of boys signed up for both junior and senior clubs we are looking forward to another year of chess!

a week with Grand Master, John-Paul Wallace. This year the boys took on the staff in a ‘friendly’ match. No quarter was given by the boys who won with ease. Watch out though, boys – we have sharpening our game in the staff room in preparation for the next showdown! Mr Martin and Miss Kettlewell have been running Gym this year and this has proved very popular.

Many parents have enjoyed the gymnastic displays and the Arnold House team are the London Gymnastics Champions. A special mention for Mr Lester’s News Board. The board displays boys’ informative articles about a range of current affairs. This has be kept up to date on a regular basis, keeps me abreast of what’s going on in the world and provides Mr Kerr with last minute questions for his Thursday morning Quiz Club!

Well done to the early Running Club boys who never-ever seem to tire of turning up at 8.00 am in all weathers! Thank you, boys. You know that it is the highlight of my week!

Thank you also to Madame Stones, Miss Coveney, Mr Arghebant and Mrs Dart who are equally keen runners.

Global location league took place throughout the year and was eventually won in by - - - - - in a thrilling final against - - - - - - - - Miss Rawlinson continues to run very popular Junior and Senior Art clubs and other ‘hands on’ activities have been Construction Club, Maths is Fun Club and Drama. ICT club with Mrs Ruda remain as popular as ever, and it’s great to see the Year 8 boys are learning how to play Bridge.

Well done to all the boys who contributed to the activities program this year. Although I can’t name all the staff, I am sure that the boys and parents will join me in thanking you all for your ongoing enthusiasm, time and expertise.

Gymnastics

F

or two hours every Thursday since last November thirty plus boys from Years 2 to 5 have enjoyed gymnastics club. They have made great progress over the year and a number of boys have shown they have some real gymnastic ability.

The final event of the school year was a display by all the boys in the club for parents and pupils. The gymnasts rose to the occasion in magnificent style with an exhibition of human pyramids and daredevil vaulting.

Running Club Years 3 & 4 The enthusiasm for Years 3 and 4 Running Club this year has been overwhelming and all the boys who have been coming every week should all be congratulated for their commitment. The boys began in September based in the school playground; engaging in a variety of running games, races and obstacle courses. It was amazing to see how quickly the stamina, technique and fitness of the boys improved over a term.

Due to cold, dark nights Running Club was suspended during the spring term, but it was fantastic to see all the familiar faces back at the beginning of the summer term, keen and ready to go. Since then, the boys have been running a variety of small runs around the local area in St. John’s Wood.

A special mention must go to - - - - - - - - - - - - - - and - - - - - - for their dedication to the club not to mention the teachers; Madame Stones and Mr. Arghebant.

Years 5 & 6 Every Thursday morning the Year 5 and 6 boys accompanied by Mr. Stones, Madame Stones, Mr. Arghebant and Mrs. Dart have braved the streets of St. John’s Wood. Pounding for miles and miles, never deterred and showing resilience to all weather extremes.

All the hard work of the club members has paid off as it is clear to see that the running fitness of the boys has improved over the year as the runs have become longer and more demanding.

It has been a fun year for Running Club, all who have been involved should be commended for their dedication to the club and the art of running.

Compass Course

W

e have had another fantastic year in the Compass Course. Year 5 started their first term of Compass researching Global Hazards and confidently presented their first group PowerPoint. In the second half of the autumn term, different groups used Publisher to design leaflets comparing new European Union countries. In the spring term, they researched different art movements and used Dazzle to create art works inspired by selected artists in each movement. Under the supervision and guidance of Leonie Flynn, the groups then researched literary genre and designed information posters for the library. A new and inventive project was introduced as an extension to this unit where the boys produced a front cover for an invented book in their genre.

Year 6 groups started the year with PowerPoint presentations on different sources of energy. They then changed groups and used Publisher to design websites on one of the main world religions, where Rekha Ruda taught them to use hyperlinks and moving GIFs. This year in the drama unit the boys rehearsed two different Greek myths, ‘For the Sake of Love’ and ‘Riddle of the Sphinx’ and performed the plays to parents at the Compass presentation afternoon. In the summer term, both Years 5 and 6 were given a choice of charities to research.

Each group chose one international charity within a particular theme and produced a PowerPoint presentation in order to persuade the school to choose their charity for fundraising. A large number of different charities were represented but only four were chosen to be shown to the rest of

Congratulations to Hope and Homes for Children who won by a significant margin due to presenting their creative fundraising ideas in an imaginative way. The Fairtrade Foundation also did well, educating us on the importance of buying Fairtrade products regularly thereby enabling the producers to work their way out of poverty and take control over their lives. We hope to incorporate their ideas by having a charity tuck shop selling Fairtrade products to raise funds in the future.

Learning Support The Learning Support Department has had a fantastic year. With the addition of several new members to the team the extra support available to the boys has once more grown in strength and expertise.

In September we welcomed an Occupational Therapist called Rachel Trudigan to the Learning Support Department. Since her arrival, Rachel has been working with a number of boys throughout the school to help improve their fine and gross motor skills. This work has had a dramatic impact upon their handwriting and ability at sports, not to mention their self-esteem. At the beginning of the summer term we welcomed Juliet Clement, a new Speech and Language Therapist to the school. Juliet comes from a well established and renowned speech and language therapy clinic called Ruth Jacobs. She has been working on a weekly basis with a variety of boys throughout the school. Her work with the boys ranges from very specific targeted support on speech sounds to work which helps to improve understanding and use of expressive and

receptive language. During the summer term we also welcomed a new Specialist Dyslexia Teacher, Jennifer Donovan to the team. Jennifer has a wealth of experience working for The British Dyslexia Association and her targeted support for the boys that she has been working with has seen excellent results.

At Arnold House we believe that having a strong specialist team to provide targeted one to one support is essential. However, it is also important for learning support to be available to all the boys throughout the School within the classroom. This support is provided by our dedicated team of Teaching Assistants. The support that is provided by the Teaching Assistants is essential to the Class Teachers as they help to support the boys in class, in small groups and on a one to one basis. Sadly this year the Learning Support Department had to say good bye to Miss Chomutova, Miss Jauna and Mrs Ravden. Nevertheless, we were quick to appoint three outstanding Teaching Assistants; Miss Kettlewell and Mrs. Mortazavi whose support and artistic

expertise in the Pre-Prep have been invaluable and Mr Arghebant in Year 4 whose skills and hard work have a made a difference to all the boys that he has worked with.

This academic year classroom support has also been extended to the Upper School.

Support has been available to Years 5, 6 and 7 for two English and two Maths lessons a week. Here, teachers have been available to work with individual boys and small groups of identified boys, supporting the subject teacher and ensuring that the boys are able successfully to access the curriculum.

The Learning Support Department is an invaluable and integral part of the school in which all staff members are involved. Due to this the hard work and efforts of all the staff and boys works well to ensure that everyone is given the individual support that they require to be able to reach their full potential.

T

he usual round of services was conducted again this year, but with some change of personnel and venues.

Mr Paul Swinden has taken over from Mrs Kate Davies as Director of Music and he put his stamp on the Chapel Choir from the start, composing his own anthem for the St Michael’s Day Service, “Send Thy Archangel Michael to our Succour”. The quality of singing and performance from the choir has risen as the year progressed.

The singing of the choir added much to the services, especially Armistice Day, Christmas and the Leavers’ Service. Mr Nicholas Allen, Headmaster of Newton Prep (and formerly of Arnold House) gave the address on Armistice Day at St Cyprian’s, focussing

on the story of the Unknown Warrior. Fr Rob Wickham, the Vicar of Hackney, was already well known to the boys through his Christmas Box campaign for the homeless, but he also took two services for us this year, when Fr Anders was away. Fr Rob certainly has his own style of preaching and this is very much enjoyed by the boys, especially on St George’s Day, when, a few days before the General Election, he quizzed three volunteer candidates (boys) from the congregation on the quality of leadership.

We had “wet church” once, when the gym was transformed into a church, with the aid of the projection system and a small altar and crucifix that was “sourced” by Mrs Penny Williams from her vicar husband. We

have since made arrangements to use the beautiful Baroque chapel at our neighbours, the Hospital of St John and St Elizabeth, when the weather is too inclement to walk to St John’s Wood Church. The year ended with a moving service for the leavers, during which the old Head Boys ceremonially handed over the “Holy Books” to the newly chosen ones. Fr Anders preached on the importance of learning from our own experience as well as the wisdom of those around us – wise words for boys moving on to their next schools.

Prize Giving The splendid venue of the theatre at The American School in London was the setting for the two prizes givings. Both events went very well, with boys looking smart and the organisation and distribution of prizes was carried out with great efficiency.

The Guest of Honour at the Junior Prize Giving was Mr Nick Gandon, a former teacher and house master at Uppingham and lates Registrar at Haileybury, who was since gone on to work for a charity called “Chance to Shine”, which has raised over £30 million to fund, among other things, programmes for cricket in state schools. Mr Gandon spoke to great effect about the need to have a goal in life and quoted the American Civil Rights leader, Benjamin Mays: “It must be borne in mind that the tragedy of life doesn’t lie in not reaching your goal. The tragedy lies in having no goal to

reach. It isn’t a calamity to die with dreams unfulfilled, but it is a calamity not to dream.

It is not a disaster to be unable to capture your ideal, but it is a disaster to have no ideal to capture. It is not a disgrace not to reach the stars, but it is a disgrace to have no stars to reach for. Not failure, but low aim is a sin”.

Wanderers were coming and had arranged a fixture against a local professional team.

Needless to say the English team were beaten, but they played with good grace and enjoyed the experience of a game in a well equipped stadium full of supporters.

The Germans fans, recognising the spirit of the English team, gave them an excellent post match reception. The moral of story being face up to challenges and enjoy experiences; you will become a better person for it. Mr Derham also quoted the Gospel story of the Parable of the Talents as a warning against those who fail to develop the talents that they have.

At the Senior Prize Giving, the Guest of Honour was the Headmaster of Rugby, Mr Patrick Derham. He is familiar with Arnold House, since we send a few boys to his school every year. His speech, which he promised would not last more than five minutes (a promise he kept) was focussed on a message to enjoy learning and to make the most of the talents that we have. He told the tale of an English pub football team from Wolverhampton, who went to Germany, thinking they were playing another pub team, only to discover the Germans thought Wolverhampton

Two very good speeches that reminded boys, parents and staff of the underlying purpose of education: to bring out and develop the abilities we have within us.

Dads Come to Year 1 Over the course of the year we have been delighted to welcome four dads into Year 1 to share their expertise: Andrew Heller (father of - - talked about coal mining in South Africa discussing the processes which bring coal from underground and transport it all over the world. The boys were fascinated to find out how boats carrying such a heavy cargo did not sink, they got to handle parts of the cutting machine, coal and various other materials that are mined.

Having Native American roots Peter Arndt talked to the boys about his and Jake’s ancestors, showing us what life was like for his grandfather. The boys were lucky enough to be able to try an actual headdress and discover what life was like living in a Teepee.

Andrew Altman (father of - - - complimented our topic about Homes and Buildings showing us the development of the Olympic site and the variety of structures being constructed. The boys were particularly fascinated to see the time lapse photography showing the aquatic centre being built and the machinery moving at great speed.

Finally Nigel Hunt (father of - - - - came to talk about looking after your teeth. He used shock tactics showing the boys how black and rotten a tooth which had been in Cola for two days had gone. I think there was some very good brushing that evening!

The boys thoroughly enjoyed all these talks and we would like to thank these gentlemen for giving so generously of their time.

Patricia Legan Year 1 Form Teacher Tractor Day From the moment they left the bus at Canons Park Year 1 were determined to have fun. Tractor day provides the boys with an opportunity of learning outdoors, enjoying the space that this facility provides.

Here are a few of the boy’s highlights; “Mr Martin showed us his beanstalk and then we got to plant one of our own, I wonder how tall mine will grow.”

“First we got to play football and rugby on the playing fields. I scored a goal. Then Miss Ramsbottom taught us some other games I liked Duck, Duck Goose the best.”

“After lunch we went for a walk in the woods. We found wild garlic. It is very smelly!”

“My favourite part was getting to see all the machinery Mr Martin uses at Canons Park.

We got to sit on the tractors and rollers. I would like to have driven them for real.”

“We got to put some seeds in ladies’ socks with sawdust to make ‘Grass Heads’. We are going to take them back to school to school and water them and watch them grow.”

The boys all had a wonderful time at Canons Park which was evident by the tired but happy faces boarding the coach on the way home.

Patricia Legan Year 1 Form Teacher Geffrye Museum On 3rd March Year 1 went on a trip to visit the Geffrye Museum. The Museum has lots of different rooms: first we looked at the Victorian room. We learnt that there was no electricity in Victorian times and that they liked to decorate their rooms with flowery patterns. Then we went to look at the modern room. The modern apartment had a bedroom above the kitchen and a television and video player. We all enjoyed our first school trip at Arnold House and had lots of fun.

Trip to the Museum of London On Tuesday 26th January, we went to the Museum of London. We went by coach which took seventy minutes. At the museum we did a workshop with a man who pretended to be Samuel Pepys. A number of us pretended to be houses and others pretended to be wind which pushed fire away. After the workshop, we watched a film and then looked around the galleries where we saw lots of swords, one of which was made out of gold. Then we had lunch and made our way back to School.

- - - - (Year 2) Victorian Day On Friday 7th November, we went to Canons Park for our Victorian Day. Firstly, we had a drill with Mr Martin and we had to take instructions from him such as ‘Attention’ and ‘At ease’ which was lots of fun. Then we went to the classroom and our teacher, Mrs Boyarin, told us all about Victorian punishments such as the dunce cap, which pupils would wear whilst sitting in the corner, and the cane. For the final part of the day, we went to see Mrs Brown the housekeeper who gave us jobs to do such as cleaning a carpet with a beater and polishing silver!

Year 3 Trips & Activities Science Museum The Science Museum trip is the day that Year 3 look forward to the most all year!

The boys have always come back from the trip in high spirits after a day full of fantastic activities. Of course, this year was no exception. The day started with the boys

can be applied in everyday life. Highlights included hearing music through our teeth, trying to complete electrical circuits and seeing how a burst of air can shoot a ball skywards. All the boys (and teachers!) had a fantastic day out and will be very jealous when next year’s Year 3 boys have their turn.

watching a film on the IMAX screen called “Deep Sea”. Everyone learnt how each living creature in the ocean (no matter how big or small) plays a vital part in keeping the ecosystem balanced. Of course, it was the big, commanding marine life such as the Humboldt squid and killer whales that everyone got most excited about. It didn’t stop there either! Next up was an interactive show about explosions. A number of the Arnold House boys were lucky enough to go up on stage and help out with some experiments. Most people’s favourite part of the day though, was the “Launchpad”.

Here, everyone had the opportunity to try different experiments, and to see how they

----- --Visiting Theatre Group On 26th November 2009, we had an Egyptian show in the gym. We were in the inner chamber of Pharaoh Mentuhotep.

We were the ‘chums’ of Daphne, who had been here and failed the first two tasks that Mentuhotep set for people before. In the first two tasks we had the countess of the tomb to help us. The first task was ‘time’ and Daphne had brought a washing line/ time line with her and we all held it. She had also brought some dates with her and we ate them – WAIT, no, not the fruits, they were pieces of paper with DATES on them like 2009AD. The second task was ‘landscape’. Some people held the River Nile and other people held other things like

crocodiles. The third task: we summoned the phantom of the tomb and it got all sorts of amazing things out. First, out came Sepu, a craftsman who had carved a beautiful statue and was carving another for the pharaoh. His sons wanted to be priests or farmers and he was mad about it. Then we met Anubis, god of the dead. He did a kind of show of what happened when someone died. The third bit was when we met Tutankhamun who had a tug of war with - - - - - - - - and - - won.

Tutankhamun said that he would have a tug of war tournament every year called the - - - In the fourth bit we met Nefertari who had just become a priestess and set all her slaves free. She was going to have a big party and she had no slaves so we helped her get the food and jewels ready. I loved all of it, and if you want to see me, I won’t knock, I’ll just Toot-and-come-in!

- - - - - - - - - - (Year 3) Egyptian Art Day On 25th November we went to Canons Park for our Year 3 Egyptian Art Day where we made fantastic pop-up pyramids. They were only made out of paper and glue! There we met an artist called Madi Boyd who helped us with our work. First, we got two pieces of card with a flap in one and in the other was a hole. Secondly, we had to stick lots of little blocks onto the pyramid that we had cut out of paper earlier. This was to make the pyramid look like it had been made of bricks. After that we had to make our own treasure and a little door, then the river Nile with some reeds. It was really good because we could open and close the pyramid, which is why it was a pop-up pyramid! We also had to make a sarcophagus out of paper too.

Later on we had to carve our name in hieroglyphics in clay. It was very hard!

Everyone loved their day. Thank you to Miss Rawlinson and the teachers for helping us to have such a great day.

London Zoo Once again, Year 3’s trip to the zoo turned out to be a great success. Fortunately the weather gods smiled on us and we were able to see and do everything that we had set out to. Highlights included getting up close and personal with the giraffes, who were in a particularly friendly mood, and the excellent presentation by the Education Centre on animal adaptations in desert and rainforest habitats. My personal favourites were the baby meerkats (aaah!), the lion cubs and the fantastic rainforest lookout.

Thanks must go to all the adults involved, and specially to the accompanying parents.

Year 4 Trips & Activities West Stow On Wednesday 11th March, Year 4 went on a School trip to West Stow. When I got to School I went on the coach and started chatting to my friends and sat down on my seat. We started leaving the School to go to West Stow and the journey was about two hours long.

When we arrived we had a small snack and waited for a bit. Then a man called Lance came and took us to a room. In the room we met up with another school and watched a little movie about the Anglo-Saxons. After that we went to check out some AngloSaxon villas and that was exciting because we had never seen one before. Then we had our lunches and sat down on some benches.

After we had lunch we went to the playground to play around and have a rest from archaeology. Then we went to a

museum and tried on clothes and helmets and saw some very interesting sights. All in all the day could not have been better and I couldn’t ask for more because that was one of the best trips I have ever been on.

- - - - - (Year 3) Verulamium Before I knew it, another year had flown by and Year 4 were returning to their annual destination of visiting the Roman remains at Verulamium.

It was, as ever, a most successful trip. The weather was yet again kind to us, as we trooped across the open parkland up to the excavations of a Roman villa. The boys observed first hand a hypocaust (central heating) system and some amazing mosaics. After that, we were treated to a fascinating handling session where the boys had to examine Roman artefacts, some being original, and to guess their use. Many

ideas caused much amusement! The hour ended with a few boys entering role play in Roman costume. After lunch the children wandered around the small museum at their leisure. Yet again, this trip was a real success and no doubt Arnold House will be venturing there again in the Autumn Term 2010.

he end of the spring term saw the 3rd incarnation of the Years 3 and 4 Arts Festival. Rehearsals started in French, Music, English and Drama lessons early in the term and gradually intensified; a few days spent at Canons Park putting everything together, with dress and technical rehearsals, culminated in two energetic and exciting performances in the closing week of term.

The performances took a similar shape to those of previous years, starting with Year 4’s ear- and eye-opening haka and continuing with French songs, complete with some very entertaining actions and props. The shows continued with the extremely enjoyable form poems, which were followed by enormously brave solo poem performances – a mixture of the humorous and more serious. The grand finale was a rousing rendition of the singing cantata ‘Holy Moses’.

Maths Day Maths day was really fun. We went in a very luxurious bus and arrived at Canons Park at about 09:30. First we went into the hall and Mr Keal put us into groups. Then my group went into the changing room to make quizzes. After that we went to Mr Lester to measure certain things and measure the capacity of the jugs. Then we did speed with Mr Matthews. I ran 100 meters in 19.7seconds. At last we did charts with Mr Martin. We had lunch and after that we built the bridges. I thought it was really good.

--After lunch we went on to build bridges.

We all split into groups of four and then the special visitor told us how to build the bridges. We then tested how strong they were. Sadly our group didn’t win.

-While the Year 6’s were on the activity ‘Building bridges’ (for two hours) we, Year 5’s did four activities: First was measuring speed, then we made surveys on the computer, then we made a quiz on multiplying and dividing in the changing room and finally, we measured things in the other changing room.

---France in Hornchurch Our annual trip to the Europa Centre – the French ‘mock’ town in Hornchurch was, as ever, a great success. We were greeted by a team of lively ladies representing seven different Francophone countries including Martinique and Morocco, Togo and Burkina Faso – Hornchurch is clearly a very multicultural district!

The boys were divided into groups, given their mock credit cards and mock money and set out for a hard afternoon of ‘le shopping’ in the mock village of ‘Haricotville’.

Much ’parlering the lingo’ ensued as our teams of eager linguists worked their way round the town mock buying giant saucisson, plastic pamplemousses, les drogues from the Pharmacie and dashing outfits from the ‘magasin de mode’ – Oh là là!

After an exhausting afternoon ‘en ville’ it was time for ‘le goûter’ –‘les crêpes au chocolat avec un chocolat chaud’– ummmm! Our eager team of ‘touristes’ were also treated to a fine rendition of the puppet show about ‘Guignole’ – the French ‘Punch and Judy’ equivalent, to add to the general excitement of the afternoon.

A wonderful time was had by all with masses of French spoken; next stop Paris in Year 7.

Year 6 Trips & Activities Imperial War Museum In January, Year 6 were taken to the Imperial War Museum as part of their study of World War One. We are fortunate in London to have so many wonderful places to visit which can supplement the boys’ learning outside of the classroom. As part of their study of World War One, all boys are given an opportunity to research a member of their family who may have fought in the Great War or in World War Two and are then expected to deliver it to the rest of the class. At the IWM the boys were able to track the war from the assassination of Franz Ferdinand to the Treaty of Versailles. The highlight for many of the boys was the ‘Terrible Trenches’ exhibition which gave them an insight into the conditions that our soldiers faced in northern France and Belgium.

Many thanks to Mr Hill for organising the trip, and the many Year 6 mothers without whom such trips would not be possible.

Year 6 Trips & Activities Leadership Week, Devon On Wednesday 5th May we woke up to our first morning in Devon and our first activity: Jacob’s Ladder. Jacob’s Ladder is made up of six logs of wood held together by strong pieces of wire. As you go up the gaps get wider, making it harder to reach the next log.

We managed to get to the second log without a fuss. Then it started to get harder and we had to help each other up. When we got to the fourth log the gap was higher than our heads but luckily there were some ropes tied to the logs, which we used to get to the very top where we were about 50 feet in the air!

The next day, we went to Black Rock beach in Cornwall.

The next day, we went mountain biking on the moors.

First we walked up a hill because we weren’t allowed to cycle on it. Then we got on our bikes and began cycling along a track. We passed some sheep bleating and cycled over a cattle grid. Soon we arrived at a hill with a sharp right turn at the bottom. The instructors let us go one at a time. The air whipped past our faces as we cycled down the hill. At the bottom, the instructors set us a challenge. We had to cycle up a very steep hill without putting our feet down. If we did we would get a Mars bar. They called it Mars Bar Hill. Mars Bar Hill was covered in rocks which made it really difficult to cycle up.

Nobody got to the top but - - - - - - went the furthest up the hill.

Jane Darcy, a former Head of English), no research had been undertaken into the fifty plus pupils of the School who died between 1939 and 1945. Year 6 worked in pairs, using the Commonwealth War Graves Commission website, armed with the name and year of death of these former pupils.

Sometimes it was easy to find information; but sometimes very hard. By the end of the morning the boys had managed to find out about almost all of the World War Two old boys. The details they found gave us the age of the servicemen, as well as the campaign they died in. Sometimes extra details were also given. Year 6 can be very proud to have added so much extra information to the School’s history and to allow us to honour more appropriately in years to come those who paid the ultimate sacrifice over sixty years ago.

One night on the trip we went camping.

Kitted out in our wetsuits, we started by having a bodyboarding lesson on the beach. Then we got into the water and we were ready to go. After we had got over the fact that the water was so cold that our feet went numb, we started to enjoy it. We loved jumping onto the waves and being dragged onto the sand by them. After half an hour it was time to get out. Everyone caught one more wave together, which was by far the best wave. The walk from the sea in our wet wetsuits was not so nice!

Once we got changed we went to the beach shop for some hot chocolate and chips before going down to the beach for a sandcastle building competition.

Unfortunately the trophy (a rock) went ‘missing’. Suspicious!

When it got to about two o’clock and we were all warm and in normal clothes it was time to go to another beach where we had a rock statue competition and a barbecue. It was sad when we left because it would be the last time that we ever saw that beach!

First of all we made sure that the tents were safe enough and would not collapse on us in the night. Then we formed groups of four or five and appointed one torch monitor for each tent. We collected firewood for the campsite and when we had enough we made a fire. We cooked sugary bread and marshmallows on sticks over the fire and then got ready for bed. We wore lots of clothes as we had been told that it would be very cold.

We woke up quite early and told jokes to each other until 7.30am when we got up, played football and fed the chickens.

It was GREAT!!!

Among the information that Year 6 discovered were the following facts: John Macalister, a member of staff who died in June 1940, was an officer in the RAF and his brother, Donald, was also killed on active service; Richard Symes-Thompson was a civilian killed in the Blitz in May 1941; Stewart Engert died in June 1941 and is buried at the British cemetery at Basra in Iraq, where British forces again saw action in the more recent Iraq War; Conrad Cherry, died at sea in February 1943, but before the war had been an Oxford Blue at rowing and represented Great Britain at that sport in the 1936 Berlin Olympics; Patrick Ritchie, an RAF pilot was shot down over Holland in June 1943, and was buried by German officials at Texel cemetery; Rowley Musson, died in August 1943, before the war he had been a well known cricketer; his brother, George Musson, also an old boy of Arnold House, had been killed the year before; Gerald Toft, was killed in June 1944, in Normandy, the day after D-Day. Two old boys died after the war had officially ended: Miles WilliamsonNoble (in Norway in December 1945) and Paul Bunting (a musician in July 1946). We do not know the causes of these two deaths

Year 6 Trips & Activities and clearly there is room for more research, but what Year 6 achieved on this Canons Park Day is a tremendously valuable start and a store of precious information for the School.

John Hill Head of History Design Day On Wednesday the 24th the whole of Year 6 experienced a fantastic design day. First we met the two designers, Paul and Danielle from ‘this & that’ design studios. They showed us a PowerPoint presentation on brands with lots of examples such as ‘Juliette has a gun’, a perfume shop and, ‘One of a kind’ boutique, which turned out to be Miss Rawlinson’s brand!

After that they showed us 10 steps on how to create our own brands, which was our topic for the day. We were shown different parts of letters and letter fonts. Afterwards, we were all given a letter in special fonts to copy.

Cabinet War Rooms and Churchill Museum In June as part of their study of World War Two, Year 6 were taken to visit the Cabinet War Rooms and Churchill Museum in central London. The trip gave them an insight into how the country was run during the War. The boys were able to see the rooms that the then Prime Minister, Winston Churchill, was using to make the decisions that would shape our country’s future. A big favourite was visiting the toilet that was actually a room where private phone calls could be made to President Roosevelt. The boys certainly found it interesting that, seventy years previously, the surrounding area was under daily attack from the Germans during the Blitz. As part of the trip, the boys were able to walk around the corner to visit 10 Downing Street, and see David Cameron’s new abode. Many thanks to Mrs

Then we were ready to start creating our own brands in pairs. Each pair was given a big sticky note to write down their ideas and we were off!

There were many good brands created from modern watches to electric cars.

About an hour later we were told to put together a presentation on our brands, (it felt like being on Dragons Den). There were some terrific brands! Everyone was very sad when it was time to leave because it was such an interesting day!

Year 7 Trips & Activities Paris Day 1 On Thursday 28th January 2010, the whole of Year 7 got out of bed at 5:15am. and drove through London to St. Pancras station. The excitement was raging and the atmosphere was intense as we all met at the Lover’s Statue. We left London on the Eurostar at just before 7:00am. We were all in pairs listening to music and talking about what the next two days would be like. A few hours later we arrived in Gare du Nord, Paris! When we arrived, a coach collected us and drove us to Montmartre. On the way we saw the Eiffel Tower and the River Seine. Once we had arrived at Montmartre we ate our lunch in the gardens and stared in awe at the most incredible view of Paris!

Our tour guide, Madi, pointed out all the monuments from the top of the highest point in Paris. Soon after we drove back down Montmartre towards the Stade de France! We completely underestimated

how big it was! We went all around the stadium including the changing rooms, the pitch and the players’ tunnel. We even went underground through a network of tunnels surrounding the pitch.

After the stadium we drove back to our hotel, unpacked and relaxed for half an

hour. Soon we were off again and we were going to the Eiffel Tower! As we were driving from place to place we were filling in a quiz all about Paris which was really interesting. As we got to the Eiffel Tower, we were shocked at just how big it was! It was almost 1000 feet tall! We went up in the cable car to the second floor where the view was stunning. We saw everywhere we had been to and where we were going to as well! We went back down and we went straight back to Montmartre which took a bit longer than expected as there was heavy traffic. We eventually arrived at Café Montmartre and we settled down for dinner.

Year 7 Trips & Activities There was a band and we all sang along especially to ‘Beat It’! Unfortunately dinner ended and we went up Montmartre to the Sacre Coeur church, which has the world’s biggest mosaic ceiling! Then we went souvenir shopping and we all bought cool hats and mini Eiffel Towers for our families.

Day 2 The next morning we woke up very excited about the day ahead. Firstly, we went down for breakfast which was really nice, especially the hot chocolate. Then we got back on the coach and headed to the Musée D’Orsay. As we arrived we were amazed at how brilliant some of the artwork was. We found out that it used to be a railway station and that the massive clock on the wall was extremely old. We all had sketchbooks, pens and pencils and we were asked by Miss Rawlinson to sketch some of the artwork we found interesting. When we had finished sketching we went over and saw the Van Gogh exhibition including his self-portrait.

Next we went to the Notre Dame to have lunch. We went to a café nearby and we all got crêpes which were delicious, especially on a cold day. After lunch we went inside the Notre Dame to do some more sketching. The decorations were unbelievable, especially the gargoyles. We saw statues triple the size of adults, which were amazing, and rose windows made out of stained glass. After we had finished our trip to the Notre Dame we drove to a port on the River Seine just under the Eiffel Tower. We boarded a ferry and went up the river Seine. We completed our quizzes and found out some amazing facts such as walking around the entire Louvre would take six months! We saw other interesting buildings such as L’Assemblee Nationale and the Pont des Invalides. Unfortunately the river trip soon ended and we were driving back to the Gare du Nord. We all bought dinner and headed back to the Eurostar which would take us back to London.

It was an amazing and awesome experience and thank you so, so much to Mme Ferhaoui, Miss Rawlinson, Mr Matthews and Madi for organising and taking us on the trip!

- - - - - (Year 7) Science Day On Friday 16th October Year 7 went up to Canons Park for a Science Day on Ecology.

When we got there we split into our two forms (7H and 7K) and we all read a sheet about quadrants which are forms of measurements to calculate how many different plants are in the fifty by fifty quadrant. We then measured how many weeds were in the square and calculated the area of it. After that, everyone put on huge white suits and played a game called Predator/Prey. In the game all the Prey had to run away from the Predators. After the Game we all went inside and researched our fingerprints. Then took our own fingerprints and put them on a fingerprint database page. A bit later on Mr. Martin came and showed us some insects he had caught in these special pots hidden under the ground.

After this we then went onto the science museum website and played some fun science interactive games. All in all it was a great day and a big thank you to Mrs Lyons, Mr Bagnall, Mr Martin and the entire Canons Park staff for setting up the whole day.

- - - - (Year 7)

Next we made a machine out of boys! Our task was to make a machine that showed how school works. Which of course led to some crazy parts such as - - - - - - part as a small child wailing, “oo-oo” while poking his arm to the sky. Now it was time to make monsters made up of boys; my team made great monsters by using body language. By that time we were getting tired but fortunately it was time for lunch.

So we relaxed while eating turkey burgers.

With everybody re-energized we got back to work. Wendy showed us how to be clowns like in the Cirque du Soleil. She taught us trips - the trip with fast ninja, the trip with slow reaction and the trip with slow ninja. Finally we finished off by re-enacting Aesop’s fables. The fables chosen were: The Hare and the Tortoise; The Frogs King and The Stag at the Pool. Among the best plays was my team’s production of the Hare and the Tortoise. As we introduced John and Edward as commentators of the race (I played John and I was the funnier) and - - - - - - - - played Edward. When we had all shown our plays we got dressed into our games kit and Wendy and Mr Marks went back to school. Drama Day was over and we all warmed up for our football match.

Drama Day On Friday the 13th of November, Year 7 went to Canons Park for Drama Day with Mr Marks and Wendy, our drama teacher for that day. As soon as we arrived we were rushed to the hall to start warming up. We started by doing crazy dances such as The Can Can or pushing the wall away.

Then we tried group counting, which is a game where you try and count to a certain number as a group while trying not to say a number at the same time as someone else.

Our goal was 26 but we only made it to 10.

Year 7 Trips & Activities Geography Fieldtrip to Dorset Sunny, warm conditions, blue sky and people on our beach!

Not what we were used to on the Geography fieldtrip to Dorset. Usually, we visit the beautiful ‘Jurassic’ Coast coastline in late April when there is a high likelihood of rain and driving wind. This year, however, in order to accommodate other activities we set off in June.

Studland Bay was like a picture postcard, with the sea almost looking inviting. It was a little awkward finding a clear spot to carry out our survey of the beach gradient, though, without treading on a sunbather’s towel or dropping our clinometers into someone’s picnic basket. ‘Let’s walk up the beach’ I announced with confidence, spotting that to the north there was an area that seemed sparsely populated by tourists.

The reason for the apparent lull in numbers became all too apparent as I spotted a few middle aged gentlemen rapidly pulling up their shorts on spotting thirty twelve year olds, armed with metre rules and measuring poles marching towards them. ‘Let’s walk back down the beach,’ I cried with alarm,

tempered only by gratification that our boys were so absorbed by the geographical landforms on view that they had failed to spot that we had wandered into the naturist area!

Having successfully circumnavigated our way out of Studland Bay beach and survived the precipitous cliffs at Old Harry’s Rock we descended into Swanage and enjoyed ice cream.

Having installed ourselves at the youth hostel at Lulworth Cove, we set off for the traditional Headmaster’s Games. This activity seems to get more outrageous every year and this time, Mr Thomas proclaimed, involved a frisbee as well as a football being battled over simultaneously. The pitch was high above Lulworth Cove on heather moorland which, as I discovered when I returned to the Youth Hostel, had recently been visited by a herd of grazing cows.

Shattered by their exertions, the boys went to their rooms and fell instantly to sleep.

Well, instantly at four in the morning!

Year 8 Trips & Activities Fishbourne Villa We waited at the school gates on a cold English morning, ready to embark on a two-hour coach trip to Fishbourne Villa, West Sussex, where we would spend the best part of the day. When we arrived there, we were to be taught about the lives of the people who would have lived there.

Fishbourne Villa is the remains of a large Roman mansion, made into a museum to educate whoever is fortunate enough to go there, of the every day lives of the roman people.

Globe Theatre The trip to the Globe came early in the autumn term, before the boys had started preparing for their Shakespeare Schools’ Festival performance of Macbeth at The Unicorn Theatre later in the term.

It was a great tour of the Globe Theatre, given by an actress who has worked on many productions. She gave the boys an intimate view of the building of the new Globe and how the materials used were essentially the same, including horse hair and wooden nails allowing the young oak timbers to expand and strengthen with time. The boys were fascinated by the minor details of the stage, the heavens above and the groundlings standing below the stage.

The boys then proceeded to an acting space where they had the chance to practise a scene from late in Macbeth, where Macbeth (puffed up with power) turns to his servant and accuses him of cowardice, “Go prick thy face and over-red thy fear, Thou lily-livered boy.” The boys performed with gusto and good humour.

We then had a break and returned, snaking alongside the Thames, to Southwark tube station and the short trip home to St John’s Wood. The boys had spent the morning at the home of Shakespeare, a vivid reminder of what lay in store as they readied themselves for half a term of all-action rehearsals, preparing for their big night in November.

LAMDA On Thursday 8th December, Year 8 made their way to the theatre belonging to the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts, where we saw a production of ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’. The theatre was very small and the play was performed in the round – and above us! Suspended above the stage were a number of walkways and characters had to climb ladders to reach this space which was used to great effect.

The play had been cut so that it lasted two hours without an interval and it was thoroughly entertaining. All the actors were final year students at LAMDA. They performed with great energy and made Shakespeare’s somewhat complicated plot quite easy to follow. The actors playing Helena, Hermia and Puck were particularly impressive – surely professional careers beckon!

We thoroughly enjoyed the production of ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ and were glued to our seats throughout. Many thanks must go to Mr Fry for organising this trip for us.

- - - - & - - - - - - - - (Year 8)

We entered, and were immediately one of these fortunate. For an hour we sat, astounded, as we heard about some of the amazing things that had been going on in the place under our very feet. We also found ourselves lucky enough to have a look at some of the original Roman household items of the site and, after many failed attempts, we finally managed to guess correctly what the items would have been used for!

- - - - - - and - - - later found themselves dressing up in an authentic re-enactment of the household routine of the Villa’s original residents! After lunch we looked around and saw for ourselves the villa’s fascinating history. Following a short film highlighting the main points on the lives of the people that lived there we realized that our time at Fishbourne was drawing to a close.

Our fun, however, was just beginning. Back on the coach and to our new destination, Brighton Pier. We spent one of the best hours of our lives, having a go on the arcade or trying not to be sick on one of the amazing roller coasters! After some delicious seaside fish and chips and fun on the beach, night time arrived, and we began our journey back home, having had a day to remember. Thank you to Mr Maddocks and Miss Hutchings for organising such a great trip.

Year 8 Trips & Activities Burgundy It all started one Tuesday afternoon when twenty six boys arrived at Paddington station with their bags and packed lunches, ready for an adventure. Then finally when the teachers showed up (late), we boarded the Eurostar and we were off. The Eurostar was great with chatting and playing (Stones Scorer 8/10) and after hours of travelling we finally reached Paris and left the Eurostar very messy (Stones Scorer 2/10). Then we boarded a coach with Simon the fearless bus driver and we were off...again. This was until we stopped and went on a walk to the Sacré Coeur where a miracle happened.

There was a band warming up on the stairs and - - - - - - and - - - - - - decided that they wanted a go. So they went up and with ‘2’ French guitarists started singing ‘Hey Jude’ with everyone cheering along (and by the end there a was a crowd of thirty people singing ‘Na, na, na, na-na-na-na’_ Finally they stopped and we headed off back to the coach where we set off for Boulogne (Burgundy). And after even more hours (and a lot of gaming) we reached Maison Claire Fontaine, an incredibly beautiful house in the middle of the countryside. The property has three dorms, a kitchen, classrooms and a giant football pitch. But everyone was tired so we went to sleep.

The next day we were ready and full of energy and completely unprepared for the week ahead.

We had French lessons, archery (exhilarating), canoeing (full of spiders), restaurants (funny), tree adventure (scary), hikes (tiring), sculpturing (interesting), football (fouling), breakfast (filling), lunch (more filling), dinner (ultra filling) and it was all rounded up by an insane talent competition, which literally had everything!

and - - - with ‘Ice Ice Baby’ written on their stomachs and - - - doing a stage dive off a table. But the real highlight had to be Mr Bagnall dressed up as a hot dog: nobody knows why he was a hot dog, he just was.

Then after five days (which felt like five months), we boarded the Eurostar once again and this time we got a 10/10 Stones Scorer rating. Then everybody just went back to their normal lives as if it had never happened except i’m sure that when we go to sleep we will dream of Mr Bagnall as walking, talking hot dog!

Year 8 Trips & Activities Flanders Battlefields On Monday 14th June Arnold House went on a trip to the WW1 battlefields in Flanders.

As soon as we arrived in Flanders we went to visit Essex farm where we saw the old sick rooms where John McCrae used to work. We read his poem and silently acknowledged all the dead. This was the beginning of a truly moving and emotional trip.

After visiting Essex farm we checked into a lovely rustic hotel. The accommodation was fantastic and we all enjoyed a good night’s sleep.

and also we visited Talbot house a house for English soldiers to relax in the town of Poperinge. Finally we visited the grave of Jack Chevalier Tayler in Dunkirk an old boy of Arnold House.

The whole trip was both memorable and cathartic and a time we will never forget.

Our Guide is definitely worth a mention; his knowledge of the period was astounding and added to the whole experience.

A special thanks to Mr Moss-Marks ,Mr Hill and Mr Cox for taking us. We were a little excitable after completing our CE.....

On the second day we visited a museum that showed what life was like in the trenches and also a recreation of the trenches.

We followed the story of - - - - - - great uncle and visited his grave and we also visited the grave of - - - - - - - relative.

At 8 o’clock we visited the Menin Gate and as head boys, we had the honour of taking part in the ceremony by laying a wreath in memory of those who lost their lives – this tradition has taken place every day since 1927.

The following day we woke up and saw numerous sites including the Tunnellers’ Experience, where we saw the British mining routes and the German bunkers. However the most memorable and emotive was Tyne Cot, one of the largest Commonwealth War Cemeteries just outside Ypres. As soon as we walked through the gates we were flooded with the sight of 11,000 graves. It really hit home about the scale of the war and how many lives it took.

On the last day we visited a place where the British executed deserters, people who were thought to have run away from the army, 55

Ski Trip to Switzerland

W

e arrived in Gstaad in darkness and were immediately whisked up to our hotel, the wonderful Loft, in 4 wheel drive vehicles, negotiating some windy narrow paths on the way!

We were greeted by the news that snow, snow and more snow was on the menu so all augured well for the week. We were not left disappointed, with the conditions as good as on any ski trip that I have been on. Lots of excited voices could be heard each morning well before the wake up call, with all the boys itching to get on the slopes. The boys were generally well organised with only the odd ski sock and ski glove going astray! The days were as action packed as ever. A busy day on the slopes with committed and enthusiastic instructors was followed by an evening activities programme including the very popular Casino night but the highlight was the talent show, judged by Arnold House’s X factor panel. We were entertained by a melée of talent, some well rehearsed, some totally impromptu - but very enjoyable all the same. The week was rounded off beautifully with the awards ceremony where we were all able to celebrate the considerable progress that all had made. We had an excellent week and it was yet another fabulous ski trip. I know that there are a lot of boys and staff already counting the days until next year’s trip!

Head Boys’ Review

O

ur experience at Arnold House will be one which we will never forget.

Throughout our eight years we have built solid bridges and relationships with our wonderful teachers and had fantastic experiences with our friends. We have grown as people and spent these years nurturing and growing these friendships .

As this year began it was a sudden shock for us to get used to the responsibility and the pressure of being in Year 8. We worked progressively and intensely throughout the year to prepare and write our final CE exams, but prepared we were! In fact most of us felt ready at the beginning of the final term and the last few weeks leading up to them really seemed to drag.

However, despite the pressure this year has been the most challenging and the most rewarding year of Arnold House.

The beginning of Year 8 felt different.

You could feel the pressure beginning to

bubble as the intensity of studying and the sudden realisation of what was required became clear. Like a flash, the November mock exams were upon us. These proved incredibly useful as it gave us an indication and taste of things to come.

The spring term brought the last set of exams before the real thing! The syllabus fell into place, and our goals were clear. All senior schools were decided and bets were on. The Easter holidays were pure revision and the thought of our final exams at Arnold House was daunting and looming.

We could think of nothing else. At half term we were literally counting the hours away as we put finishing touches to our final studying offerings. It felt so intense. We could now almost feel them.

The difference between the trips before and after the exams were chalk and cheese.

During the French trip we had a great deal of fun, but our minds just couldn’t escape from CE, which was just

looming over the horizon. In the trips after CE, the mood was electric and ecstatic and we felt like we had not a care in the world.

What a relief! The hard work had been done.

The job of being Head Boy has been truly unforgettable. It has been an honour getting to know the teachers and performing various responsibilities from showing prospective parents around the school, to - what was a personal honour -laying a wreath at the Menin Gate Service.

We have learnt a lot about ourselves and have especially enjoyed the spirit and attitude among friends and teachers alike.

As we finish this report, our penultimate duty as Head Boys before handing over to our successors, we would like to thank everybody on behalf of the Year for a truly fantastic experience. We shall miss you.

Review

I

t has been another exciting year in the Art and Design department with many of our boys excelling themselves with their vibrant and expressive creative work. Following the success of my trip to New York last year it has been wonderful to implement some of the ideas and inspiration that I gathered during my visits to galleries in some new schemes of work and project ideas.

In the autumn term Madi Boyd, paper artist, revisited Arnold House and this time worked with boys in Year 3 on their Egyptian Art project. The boys spent a day learning about paper construction techniques and produced exquisite paper pyramids complete with pop-ups and moving parts.

We all had a great day and hope that Madi will continue to work closely with the Art department.

Cathy from the children’s magazine ‘Anorak’ came to see us again and this time wanted the boys’ help to judge their front cover competition. She showed the boys a shortlist of designs and 4B had the difficult decision of choosing a winner. It was very exciting for all involved and even more so when the magazine was printed later on in the year.

in all it was a very worthwhile experience for all involved.

In the spring term the Arts Festival was a major focus in the Art department. All boys in Years 3 & 4 worked hard on two schemes of work to exhibit at the festival at Canons Park. Year 3 focused on Egyptian Art and produced their own hieroglyphic alphabet that they embossed on metal to tell a story.

They also worked in groups on Monetinspired paper collages. Year 4 immersed themselves in the fantasy underwater world of jellyfish and produced a raft of creative work, experimenting with glass paint, papier mache, three dimensional marbling techniques and mixed media fibres. The results were impressive and it was wonderful to see the boys so proud of their achievements.

Later on in the spring term designers Danielle and Paul from Studio This & That led a Design Day for Year 6 at Canons Park.

They introduced the boys to the concept of branding and briefed them on a design project. The boys then worked in small teams to create their own brand and present a number of creative applications.

The designers returned two months later to watch the boys pitch their ideas and present a joint exhibition. I was thrilled with the boys’ enthusiastic response to all aspects of the projects and the way in which they embraced the design process.

A highlight of the year was Arnold House’s first foray into the world of ‘Young Art’.

All boys in Year 2 and Year 5 submitted a painting into the competition and we were thrilled that eleven boys were short-listed and nine highly commended. I really enjoyed going to see the exhibition at the Royal College of Art along with many boys and parents. This will definitely become a yearly tradition and we have a big challenge to equal this year’s success.

To finish off the year in a creative fashion we were very lucky that Clarrie Wallis, curator of contemporary British Art at the Tate, came to visit us. She hosted a question and answer session with Year 5 boys and showed them an inspirational presentation of her current work. The boys asked lots of questions and left the session buzzing with plans to visit the Tate over the summer.

The new school year holds many exciting challenges for the Art and Design department and I am looking forward to introducing the boys to some new artists and designers as well as some new projects including architecture and mixed media weaving.

C

oming into a school with a wellestablished and flourishing music department is always an eye-opening and somewhat daunting experience for any teacher, but what impressed me very quickly was the sheer range of talent, enthusiasm and willingness to succeed from the boys – a great tonic for soothing the slightly furrowed brow of the incoming Director of Music!

The musical schedule for the autumn term commenced with the Year 7 Informal Concert. The setting of the school gym provided a relaxed environment for the boys to showcase their musical abilities, and there was a commendable variety of pieces performed in different styles. A conspicuously bravura solo was given by - - - - - - - - who played Vivaldi on the violin with a panache and flawless technique rare in someone of his age.

Barely given time to emerge from the frothing wake of the Year 7 Informal Concert, Year 8 offered us their enticing and varied mixture of musical offerings at their evening the week before October half-term.

A poignancy attached itself to the occasion, as this would signify one of many farewell musical performances from Year 8 boys in their final year at Arnold House. In the midst of frenetic Common Entrance revision and Shakespeare festival preparations, they did not disappoint and treated the assembled audience to beautifully played solo and ensemble items. This occasion also marked the Arnold House debut of ‘Small Man Complex’ – the intriguingly named Year 8

band, from whom more is promised during the year.

The emotional resonance and affecting nature of Armistice Day at St Cyprian’s Church afforded the Chapel Choir the opportunity to sing Geoffrey Burgon’s ‘Nunc Dimittis’ with organ and trumpet accompaniment. The unison setting gave the music an ethereal and penetrating quality, and I was impressed with the quality of sound and breath control the boys produced in their singing.

At this juncture in the term, it was difficult to envisage plans for the Christmas Concert at Canons Park, yet the event was soon upon us, and thanks to the dedication of the boys and the magnificent expertise and assured tutelage of the peripatetic staff, this was a musical highlight. With a packed house in attendance, the concert was a very fine musical display from nearly all the ensemble groups in the school – a dynamic showcase providing an appropriate atmosphere for the festive season.

The final day of the term saw the Arnold House Carol Service – the traditional festival of lessons and carols celebrating the birth of Christ. Interspersed amongst the readings and carols were anthems conveying the message of Christmas, ably sung by the junior and chapel choirs. This was a lovely culmination to an hectic and thoroughly enjoyable musical term at Arnold House.

Spring Term

A

lthough the spring term did not quite pack in the same number of musical events and concerts as the autumn term, we enjoyed two very successful Informal Concerts, a jazz band showcase and the Years 3 & 4 Arts Festival at Canons Park.

The Informal Concerts were given by boys in Years 5 & 6, with both events showcasing a very high standard of musicianship.

Nearly two thirds of the year group were represented in the Year 5 concert, and this was a great testament to the enthusiasm and willingness of the boys to involve themselves in music at Arnold House.

The Year 6 concert seemed to set a new standard for musical excellence, and the boys in this year group demonstrated not only a very high level of preparation for each solo that they performed, but also a vivid sense of musicality and artistry.

The term culminated with the Years 3 & 4 Arts Festival at Canons Park. Boys had spent the best part of the term industriously learning their words to the cantata ‘Holy Moses’, written by Chris Hazell. Over two nights, they sang tremendously well and this was all the more impressive a feat when one remembers that many of them had poems to learn and art work to submit for the festival.

As a final note, I was very fortunate to have the excellent teaching of Miss Lesley Ralphs in the music department during much of the spring term. She did a superb job covering for Mr Cuthbertson while he was absent, and her calm, relaxed and highly competent manner shone through each day. My sincere thanks to Miss Ralphs.

Mr Clewlow’s jazz band performed impressively to both the junior and senior boys in a Friday assembly towards the end of the spring term. Under his assured direction, the horns and rhythm section coalesced beautifully to play some well-

Summer Term

A

s I write, the beginning of the summer term in the music department seems but a distant memory, such is the speed with which the days pass in a busy school.

However, we could not have heralded the onset of summer in a better fashion than by taking the boys in the chapel choir to Stowe School’s Choral Day in Buckinghamshire.

This has long been a well-established fixture in their calendar and after many practices during the spring term learning the music for the day, the boys were ready to participate in a full scale Evensong in the school’s magnificent chapel. With its spectacular landscaped gardens and famous Palladian bridge, Stowe could not have advertised itself better, resplendently bathed in early summer sunshine. The boys gained much from the experience, worked assiduously throughout the day of rehearsals there, and sang very well in the service.

In week 4 of the summer term, our two guitar teachers, Jason Little and Clive Carroll

assembled the amassed forces of pluckers and strummers from Years 3 to 8 to perform in the guitar concert, held in the school gym. This was a very popular event and was well attended by supportive parents of the boys. The diverse range of music enthralled the listener throughout, and in each performance, boys could be seen living out their various guitar heroes with some very stylish and accomplished playing. The assured teaching and inspirational guidance from Mr Little and Mr Carroll continues to see the guitar in rude health at Arnold House.

Our senior summer concert in May gave our Year 8 leavers the opportunity to shine in musical valediction. They did not disappoint, and the audience was treated to some first rate solo playing and ensemble performances. Particular highlights of the evening were - - - - - - - sax solo and - - - - - - - playing the Weber Clarinet Concertino. - - - - - - - - on the drums and - - - - on the piano also provided excellent performances. The senior orchestra have certainly come into their

own this year and the tightness in their playing and growing sense of musicality has impressed me greatly. Their sparkling performance of the ‘Can Can’ at the summer concert and the festive ‘Troika’ at the Christmas event was a fitting culmination to a year of hard work and practice in the Tuesday after school rehearsals.

The Years 1 and 2 summer concerts, held over two afternoons in late June, enchanted the audience in the school gym.

In addition to some excellent recorder playing and other instrumental items, the boys had learnt through song the story of ‘Alex in Wonderland’ with Mrs. Sadler in their Thursday afternoon music lessons.

Summer Term The quality of the singing was excellent, whetting the appetite for the Junior Summer Concert at Canons Park held in the same week.

The quality of the performances in this concert was outstanding throughout for boys of such a young age. Many junior ensemble groups performed, including Junior Strings, Junior Choir, the recently formed Training Clarinet Group and Cello Group. Additionally, there were excellent solo items from - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - and - - - - - On one of the hottest evenings of the summer term, the junior boys provided a musical treat and displayed a talent and resolve for performance which were truly impressive. There is much potential here for the future.

The school chapel choir has matured and grown as a unit this year. Taking the boys’ singing back to basics has helped them to focus on the importance of diction, breathing, listening to each other and nurturing the discipline of watching the conductor at all times. They have sung well this year, with some memorable performances on Armistice Day and at the various services at St John’s Wood Church.

Looking forward to next term, the boys will

be performing in their first choral concert at the chapel of the Hospital of St John and St Elizabeth.

The year has also seen another set of excellent Associated Board examination results. Although you will find details of the results on a separate page of the magazine, a special mention needs to be made of Mrs Carol Antoniou, who worked so hard with Mr Cuthbertson’s piano exam pupils in his absence to produce some super results for these boys.

Musically, this has been another tremendous year for Arnold House; with the dedication and enthusiasm of the boys and the expertise and professionalism of all the instrumental teachers, the department continues to flourish vibrantly and with great strength.

Music Technology

F

ollowing the success of the 2010 Annual Fund, ten Apple iMacs were installed in the music room over February half-term. To date, they have been used predominantly by boys in Years 7 & 8 for project work involving the pre-installed ‘Garage Band’ programme. This is a virtual music studio which has replaced the previous Windows-based Sequel and O-Generator programmes, offering the boys a much wider canvas to mix, record and multi-track their own compositions in digital quality sound. Thus far, topic work has comprised composing music and synchronising this to a television advert, remixing tracks to a well-known pop song, designing music for a whacky product, radio and TV jingles, musical clichés and 12-bar blues pieces.

Using a line microphone, boys also have the option in future projects of recording live instruments, or combining iMovie with Garage Band to create a multi-media presentation.

With the connection of the existing Yamaha keyboards to the iMacs, boys have been able to compose their own pieces, send them complete to iTunes or burn them onto a CD, and then listen to what they have created on their iPods only a few hours later.

With such an enviable facility in place at Arnold House, there is now the scope to include younger boys in occasional music technology lessons as an extra dimension to their learning.

t was a very busy football term. The eighty two school fixtures that were played equated to an average of a game every day during the term! This extensive fixture list meant that every boy in Years 3-8 had the chance to represent the school in at least one competitive match with another school. I was impressed by the skill, enthusiasm, determination and sportsmanship on display and the progress that every boy made over the season.

Following some breathtaking play, Arnold House became the first team to retain the Cup in event’s fifteen year history.

my memory. Wins were recorded against Wetherby, Newton Prep, City of London School, Hereward House, Durston House, Chelsea Academy, Northbridge House, The Hall and Aldenham.

Player Profiles - - - - (goalkeeper) - A towering presence in goal he always looked likely to keep a clean sheet.

- - - - - (goalkeeper -2nd half of season) Grew into the role and by his final game looked a safe pair of hands.

- - - - - - - (right back) – Fabulous ball control and able to pass with both feet.

His last ditch goal-saving tackles became a trade mark!

- - - - - (centre back) – An excellent passer of the ball, deceptively strong in the tackle, he even found the energy to score a memorable goal.

- - - (centre back and captain) - led the team superbly, tackled hard, passed well and even hit the bar with a shot from the half way line!

- - - (left back) Had a great season despite some niggling injuries, always likely to score with a left foot pile-driver!

- - - - (right midfield) An absolute wizard with the ball at his feet with more tricks up his sleeve than Paul Daniels!

- - - - - (centre midfield) He was the heartbeat of the team. His match-

winning display against Aldenham summed up his season.

- - - - - - (centre midfield) - Tough tackling, holding midfielder who got better and better as the season unfolded.

- - - - - - (left midfield) Arnold House’s Gary Lineker but with more skill!

- - - - (centre forward) - Arnold House’s most creative player, with the best ball control in the team.

- - - - - (centre forward) Pace, power, skill and agility made him unplayable when on song.

Football A very positive start to the season saw the 2nd XI win their first three matches, including a 5-0 win over the Devonshire House 2nd XI and a 1-0 victory over their 1st XI. The boys played attractive and skilful football and were always trying to pass the ball on the ground. Their style of play suited the excellent Canons Park turf, though I was equally pleased with the determination the Arnold House players showed when faced with less favourable conditions at away venues.

The 2nd XI ran onto the field to play St Anthony’s with a spring in their step. A series of wins had given them heart and they fully expected to continue their unbeaten run.

Their optimism was well placed as a fine passing move was added to by an adept flick from - - - - - - with the outside of his boot and rounded off by a super 20 yard finish from - - - - Shortly afterwards, - - - himself doubled Arnold House’s advantage with a crisp finish. Even when St. Anthony’s pulled a goal back, morale and expectations were high. However, St Anthony’s equalised and instead of remaining calm, the 2nd XI charged forward, even the defenders, leaving our own goal exposed. Although - - - - - - - and - - - - - - - remained solid and disciplined in the back four, the inevitable happened and soon the game was out of touch as St Anthony’s added to their score.

Unfortunately two early goals for Aldenham were of our own making, as we lost possession on the edge of the penalty area.

In the second half, however, it was oneway traffic. - - - - - - and - - - - both hit the post and - - - - - - had what seemed to be a certain goal brilliantly tipped over by the bar by the Aldenham goal keeper. - - - - - - was orchestrating play in midfield and the back four of

-- ------ ---- --- ---- - - - - and Captain - - - - - - - were brilliant. - - - - - - - was always secure in goal and his very effective long kick set up Arnold House attacks. With time running out - - - - - - - - received a pass from - - - - - - and hit a good shot across the excellent Aldenham keeper. Unfortunately there was not time for an equaliser. Man of the Match was - - - - - - - who was combative yet composed in defence and led the side with calm authority.

Well done to all players. A very good performance and a super season. I am sure that some of the Year 7 players will have benefited from their experiences this year and will progress to the 1st XI next season.

-----------------------------------------Awards: Player of the Season: - - - - - Most Improved Player: - - - - - - The season started in positive fashion with a fine victory over a big Durston House side. The second win should have occurred in our fixture against St Anthony’s, a game we dominated but where we could not put the ball in the back of the net.

Some of our football was exemplary and the season looked to be full of promise.

Unfortunately we stuttered against The Hall, City of London and Aldenham but wins against Newton Prep and a thrilling draw at Westminster restored our confidence.

Durston House inflicted a narrow defeat when we should have put the game to bed in the return encounter.

I continually emphasise to all boys that it is a passing game and that they have adapted and improved throughout every match.

They have been a joy to coach. Well done everyone.

Richard Bagnall Games

Perhaps the most thrilling match of the season was the 6-6 draw against Durston House. Fantastic and very late volleys from - - - - and - - - - - - - gave us a well deserved draw. In this game, - - - - skilfully created most of our goals and showed his worth.

The last match of the season ended with a disappointing result, yet I was delighted by the team’s performance which was testament to the progress they had made.

On a huge pitch in the driving rain, the 2nd XI played attractive and measured football.

The highlight of the season was the thumping victory over St. Anthony’s, where all the boys played out of their skins to record a good number of goals as well as keeping the opposition scoreless.

Draws against Hereward House and St Anthony’s did not reflect the dominance we demonstrated. The narrow losses to The Hall were disappointing as the boys played the better football: poor finishing and 108

crucial mistakes cost us dearly. A splendid victory against Devonshire House was unfortunately followed by a heavy defeat at Westminster, a sloppy performance from our lads. The fixture against Burbage School from Hackney was very entertaining.

We squandered so many chances and the game finished with honours even. Success against Lyndhurst: our performance was outstanding.

boys improved over the season, with some sublime football being played in a 4-1 victory over Lyndhurst, which included the goal of the season from - - - - - - - - - It was a joy to coach this team over the term, and hopefully the boys can continue with their progress in future years! ---------The Colts B team had a fantastic run of results this season, but what was perhaps even more pleasing was the manner in which they came about. The “goals scored” column reads 22 over a mere 7 matches, which indicates the thirst for goals that was running through this team. The squad also showed their inner desire to win despite tight, nervous encounters. This was evident by their winning three matches by the crowd-pleasing score line of 4-3, and one 3-2 when the scores were level or even when Arnold House was trailing in the last few moments. The final match summed up how much each and every one of the

I really felt for the boys when the whistle went in our last game of the season, because they gave me everything. They did their school proud, their team mates proud and they made me proud, and as a coach that is all I could ask from them. I hope they see their season as one full of positives, because giving your all in anything goes a long way in helping you to achieve things. Football is all about desire, and this team had it in abundance.

The midfield saw great performances from - - - - - - - - and - - - - - with - - - - - - showing great tenacity upfront.

Our two draws came in our games against Northbridge House. The boys have now given themselves an excellent foundation to go on and do well as they move into the Under 11A team.

The boys can be very proud of their efforts, and it was so pleasing to see all of them improve in all parts of their game.

The results show that the Under 9 A team achieved only one victory in their season, but this does not tell the whole story.

Despite suffering five defeats, every game except The Hall at home (1-4) was extremely tight and had the boys shown better finishing, then their season might have been a different story. - - - - - - led from the front as captain, and finished the season as top goal scorer with five goals. His best effort coming in the solitary victory at home to Northbridge House (4-1) when he went on a mazy run which saw him finish with aplomb with a little dink over the keeper.

There were other excellent performances from - - - - - - - Sacha - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - and - - - - - - - who all formed the bedrock of the Arnold House defence throughout the season. Special praise must be reserved for - - - - - who

Every boy who pulled on the Arnold House jersey gave of their best and played with spirit, determination and a good degree of sportsmanship. Over the season the team recorded some memorable victories over Lyndhurst, Northbridge House and Durston House. Every boy’s skill level increased and the team became a more cohesive unit as the season unfolded.

Every player showed dramatic improvement, and the sense of them playing as a team and giving 100% grew throughout the season. Overall the team won the majority of their games, but the highlight of the season was a close loss against The Hall, the last game of the season. During this game all of the players showed that they were capable of competing at a high level, and the ‘neversay-die’ attitude and will to win that grew in each individual is something that they will take to any other sporting endeavour.

Another highlight was the trip to Bisham Abbey, where the boys got stuck into each other over a game of paintball before some training and a game against Maidenhead RFC. All season - - - - - - was outstanding, leading the try-scoring table as well as

leading the team with a great passion.

------The side travelled to Durston House for our first outing of the term. We were on the back foot early in the contest, then we

gradually started to assert ourselves with - - - - - scoring the first points and - converting. In the end Durston proved too strong to contain.

St Anthony’s provided a big side in opposition. - - had an outstanding match and opened the scoring, - - - - [3], - - - - - - - - and - - again wrested the contest in our favour the home outfit played some very gratifying rugby, for a deserved win, 43-12.

The boys from Chelsea Academy visited Canons Park, - - - - - [2] and - - - - [2] gave us the ascendancy in a tight game, 29-28, a home victory. The Hall was a tough final game with - - - - - - - and - - providing a superb performance throughout despite a heartbreaking loss.

A great effort from all who pulled on the school colours.

The Under 11 team had a very successful season only losing one game which was against local rivals, The Hall. Excellent victories were secured against St. Anthony’s and Keble. The boys saved their best performance of the season until the last game against Keble, when a last-minute try was taken to secure a very close 20-17 victory.

always superb and on attack they always looked to threaten the try line.

The most valuable back award went to - - - - - - - - - who always marshalled his troops and tackled relentlessly. Against Wetherby the team were courageous and never took a backward step, - - - [2], - - and - - - provided an epic performance and a superb 20-5 win. The Festival at Edge Grove was hugely enjoyable and we performed extremely well.

Hockey Under 13 Hockey continues to grow in popularity at Arnold House. Twenty boys in Years 7 & 8 elected to play the sport in the spring term and the overall standard of play was very high. Once again Mr Stones and Mr Kerr were assisted in their coaching by a specialist hockey coach, Mr Matt Wells. Matt has represented England at youth team level and currently plays in the Premier league of English hockey for Southgate H.C.

The standard of play in the 2nd team improved markedly as the term unfolded and in other years many of the players could have found themselves playing at 1st team level. They also triumphed in the Arnold House School Invitation Hockey tournament to make it an Arnold House clean sweep at this event.

Sebastian Stones Senior Master

Under 11 The 1st team, captained by - - - - - - had a very successful season. Of the eight matches played the As won six. This included memorable victories over The Hall, Durston House, Keble, St Anthony’s and WUS. The two defeats came at the hands of St Paul’s Cathedral School and Newton Prep schools who concentrate solely on hockey in the spring term. The highlight of the term for the 1st team was beating five other schools to win the Arnold House School Invitation 7-a-side hockey tournament.

Hockey also proved popular at Colts level, with twenty-two boys electing to develop their skills in Games sessions. Over the course of the term, seven matches were played. Arnold House ran out victorious in four of them, the match with St Paul’s Cathedral School ended in a draw and two matches were lost. The standard of individual and team play improved over the season and I was impressed with boys’ ability at hitting, pushing, trapping and dribbling. Tennis Under 13 The Arnold House Tennis Club had another successful season during the summer term of 2010. At Under 13 level, twenty four boys opted to focus on tennis during Games afternoons and these boys were easily accommodated at The Canons Park Activity Centre, thanks to the six courts we have at our disposal.

Over the course of the season, eight matches were played with other local schools. Games were arranged to suit every standard and so during the season every one of the twenty four boys who opted for tennis had at least one opportunity to represent the school in a competitive match.

The schools that we played matches against included Bishop’s Stortford College, Devonshire House, Durston House, City of London, The Hall, St Anthony’s, Westminster Under School and Wetherby Prep School.

Every boy who represented the School gave their best and conducted themselves in an appropriate manner. In terms of results, the team won six matches and were defeated

Under 11 The interest in tennis is not confined to the senior boys at Arnold House and in 2010 the Under 11 Tennis Squad numbered twenty two eager and enthusiastic Years 5 & 6 boys. Over the course of the season boys had the chance to play three fixtures with other schools. Our opposition included St Anthony’s, Durston House and The Hall.

Selected Years 5 & 6 boys also had the chance to play in the Mill Hill Invitational singles championships which involved boys from over fifteen schools. Every boy made progress over the season and I was pleased with the high standard of play and sportsmanship that every player showed at all times. Swimming City of London Swimming Gala Fifteen boys from Years 5 to 8 made the short journey over to the City of London School to participate in a swimming gala during the spring term. For most of Arnold House’s fledgling swimming squad it was their first opportunity to compete in such an event and every boy seemed really to enjoy the afternoon. Despite the inexperience of the Arnold House team the boys acquitted themselves with credit. - - - - - - - - was Arnold House’s most successful swimmer in the Under 11 category and over the course of the gala he finished 3rd twice and 4th on a further two occasions in the

A Race. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

--- ------ ---- --- --- - - - - - - - - - and - - - - - - - were the other Under 11 members of the squad and each boy gave his all in races covering backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly. In the Under 12 category - - - - - - - who finished third twice and fourth on two other occasions in the A Race, was Arnold House’s most successful swimmer. Who knows, if he had traded in his Bermuda shorts for something a little more streamlined he may have finished even higher! - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - and - - - - - were the other Year 7 members of the

squad and they also had a busy afternoon with each boy competing in four races. The Year 8 team comprised - - - - - - - - - and - - - - - and both boys deserve credit for their endeavours, especially given the strength of the other competitors. In the final analysis Westminster came first and Arnold House tied for second place with the hosts, City of London.

After a successful and enjoyable ten week winter net session at Lord’s, the first competitive game against a strong Westminster side was eagerly anticipated.

In an exciting victory by five runs, - - scored 50 and Skipper - 36, - - - - and - - - - - took four wickets between them.

We had a resounding success against Owens: - [55 no], - - - - - [36], - - - [27no] posting 149-3 on the scoreboard, with our visitors dismissed for 80, - - - [2-5] and - - - - - 2-7] were the pick of the bowlers. Success breeds confidence, and we were too strong for Haileybury, winning by ten wickets. Defeats at Latymer, - - - - - [34], - - - - - 21] and Orley Farm were victories snatched from our grasp.

A second defeat over Owen’s with a win by 22 runs, - - - [57], an exciting game against Belmont, [ - - - 52] and - - - [28no] rewarded us with 112 on the board.

- - - - 4-12], - - - - [3-20] uprooted the stumps with regularity, accomplishing a win by 14 runs.

The final game would witness us welcoming The Hall; a stunning knock by - [55] in partnership with - - - - [30 no] provided us with a 30 run win.

If asked how the results and performances would develop through the term I would happily accept our tally of playing twelve and winning nine.

Under the mature and intelligent captaincy of - - - - the boys progressed in every department. Over the year they grew into being a dignified advertisement for Arnold House, and a really excellent First Eleven Cricketing team.

I wish our Year 8 boys good luck and best wishes as they go on to represent their respective senior schools.

2nd XI

Boxhill gave us another triumph, restricting our guests to 73, - - [1-7], - - - - [2-3].

In reply we got home by five wickets, - - - [23]. Chasing 58 for victory against Wetherby, - [24] and - - - [25] were in no trouble. Edge Grove is the benchmark for us; they are well coached and were the current Prep School Cup Holders. A century from their opener was the difference; our boys were competitive throughout, unfortunately slipping to defeat.

We bounced back with a superb win at Bishop’s Stortford College, - - - - [43 no], edging us to 107. The bowlers were excellent, - - - - [2-14], - [4-10] and - - - [4-12] dismissing the hosts for 68.

The Arnold House 2nd XI cricket team played a number of fixtures throughout 2010, and showed pleasing improvement as the season drew to a close. The bowling was the strong point for this team, as players such as - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

There were some solid batting displays, no more so than from the inspirational captain, - - - - who hit a season high [34 no] in the last game of the season. ----------------------------------------------Skipper - - - - - starred with a blistering 98 against visitors St Anthony’s in the first Under 12 contest of the term. His innings consisted of eighteen fours, including a towering six, off only sixty balls.

Assisted by a lively knock by - - - [17] our innings closed on 129-5 using the allotted twenty overs. The visitors lost early wickets in the run chase; however a solid middleorder partnership of eighty always had them in with a chance. Thankfully we edged home by three runs.

The second contest against Durston was an entertaining affair; our bowlers restricted the guests to 103, - - - [2-21], - - [2-23], - - - - - [1-6] - - - [1-8] and - - - - - - [1-22] were all successful. In reply - - - - - scorched the boundary rope with regularity. His 64 no [3x6, 8x4] was impeccable, - - - - - - chipped in with 13 no, resulting in a win by 9 wickets.

A super effort by all!

The Under 11A team had a very encouraging season, and showed great promise in preparation for senior cricket next year. They can take great pride in the improvement they have made. The team was led by - - - - - - - who led by example and was ably assisted by senior players - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - and - - - - - The real highlight of the team was seeing so many Year 5s in the side, which bodes well for next year. A special mention goes to - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - and - - - - - - Highlights of the season were the victories against Wetherby and Durston House, plus a last ball defeat against Westminster which, as a game, had absolutely everything. I really felt we could have held on for victory. I look forward to working with many of the boys in the winter nets, and I am very confident that they will all have a very successful future in the sport.

The highlight was the win against St Anthony’s, but the most pleasing aspect of the season was the improvement that all of the players showed throughout the season. In terms of batting, there were some great performances from - - - - - - - - - - - - - - and - - - - - - - whilst - - - - - - - - - and - - - - - - both showed glimpses of brilliance with the ball.

In our final match a comfortable win against Wetherby.

These boys will develop and improve as cricket is such a passion for them.

The team also showed great improvement throughout the season, so much so that they managed to score an amazing 100 runs from 10 overs in the last game of the season, eventually winning the game by 51 runs. In the batting department - -

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -- -- -- -- - - - - - - - and - - - - - - Metha all played some great innings. The bowling from the whole team was also phenomenal, with - - - - - - - -- -- -- -- leading the way with a skillful leg-spin that defies his age. What made this team even more incredible was the fact that the majority of the players were Year 3, and thus still have a season to play in this team next year.

Twenty/20 Cricket Match at Lord’s

A

s the boys entered the England dressing room to prepare for the annual memorial match on the Nursery Ground; the atmosphere was electric. They absorbed the fact that they were in a room that has been graced by all the all-time cricketing greats. The excellent pre-match tea in the Indoor School was well attended by families before everyone assembled in the Nursery Ground stand. Mr Clegg’s side elected to bat first. Unfortunately the top four struggled against some accurate bowling. - - - - [2-9], - - - - [2-19], - - - - [1-26], - [1-18] were all successful; however the nagging line and length of - - - [0-9] was instrumental in containing the opposition batsmen. - - - - [26 no] resurrected the innings with some glorious shots and positive running: - - - - [12], - - - [12] and - - - - [7] all contributed to a final total of 116-8 off the allotted twenty overs.

Once again the boys provided some excellent cricket whilst embracing the ethos of good sportsmanship and cordial team spirit: something that Messrs. Clegg and Allain would have commended.

In reply captain - - - [25 no] looked in complete control as he stroked the ball to all parts with grace and timing. - - - - [10], - - - - [10] supported their skipper, - [1-27], - - - [1-11], - - - - [2-11] and - - - - - - [1-8] were meticulous with the ball. Nevertheless Mr Allain’s side edged to an exciting victory by two wickets.

Cricket Tour to Jersey On the 25th June a party of fourteen Arnold House cricketers headed to Gatwick for our journey to the beautiful island of Jersey.

Victoria College was the stunning venue for our opening match.

- - - [44] and - [60] caressed the ball to all parts and gave us the perfect opening partnership, and - - - - - [15], - - - - [15] and - - - - [19] all contributed to a total of 171-9 off the allotted 30 overs. In response, the hosts edged to victory in the final over, the difference between the sides being in the extras: our bowlers at times were harshly judged!

Next came two entertaining games against the County side. Chasing a mammoth 216 to win we fell short. However a superb knock by - - - - - [49] in tandem with his skipper - [35] gave the opposition concern as at one point we were ahead of the asking rate. Sadly we lost out in the end.

For the return fixture, with fatigue setting in, we could only post 76. - - - - [20] was the pick of the batsmen. We eventually succumbed to defeat, but battled to the end of the contest. The boys represented the school with their customary sportsmanship in all games.

With superb weather, excellent hotel accommodation and a fun day on the beach, the tour was a huge success.

I wish to thank the Bursar, Mr Richard Fletcher, for his unstinting support, both for the boys and myself, throughout our visit.

Sports Day & Athletics Championships

he annual Arnold House Sports Day was, as always, an enjoyable feast of athletic endeavour. Over the course of the day boys from every section of the school ran, jumped and threw in the hope of bringing glory to themselves and their house team.

The morning session provided boys in Years 1 to 4 with the opportunity to win silverware and medals. During two and a half hours of activities boys competed for individual honours and House points as they rotated around four themed zones.

These zones included the Power Zone, the Strength Zone, the Agility Zone and the Track Zone. relay which formed the centrepiece of the Strength Zone and proved to be a real hit with competitors. There was still room in the schedule for the old favourites like the egg and spoon and sack race. The Track Zone, where every boy competed in a sprint race, a middle distance event and a marathon, saw many quick times and as always threw up some very exciting races.

The man of the Track Zone in Year 1 was - - - - - - - - - - - - won the prize in Year 2. In Year 3 - - - - - - received the award and the fastest man on the track in Year 4 was - - - At the end of the morning session the Sports Day House Point Board showed Nelson in the lead closely followed by Pitt, Wellington and Brunel.

With the Sports Day House Point Board looking very tight after the morning session, it was proving very difficult for anyone to predict which team might eventually walk away with the coveted Sports Day House Trophy. With this in mind the senior boys took to their events with palpable vigour. In earlier heats, boys had been seeded into A, B and sometimes C races for 50 metre, 100 metre, 200 metre and 400 metre disciplines.

Each race was keenly fought, given that House points were made available for every race. The table below shows the results for the various ‘A’ races and events.

Sports Day & Athletics Championships On completion of all the events the ‘Victor Ludorum’ was awarded in each age group.

In Year 5 the award was won by - - - - - - - - - - - - - received the award in Year 6. - - - - - - - won in Year 7 and for the first time in recent history, the Year 8 award was shared. The joint winners being - - - - - - - and - - - - - - Shortly afterwards, the 250 anxious competitors and their parents, representing the four school houses; Pitt, Nelson, Wellington and Nelson were told, that Nelson were the champions. The Nelson House Captain, - - - - - proudly lifted the Sports Day House Trophy above his head to a cacophony of appreciative applause.

The ‘42 Club Dinner

W

ell, I certainly thought I had the best seat in the room. At my first Arnold House Old Boys’ Dinner I sat opposite my former teachers, Chere Hunter and John Prosser. Both looked extremely well, and it was a pleasure to catch up on all their news since I left in 1992.

42 Club’s activities and then introduced the headmaster.

The headmaster noted the school’s achievements on the playing field, in the arts and in academia and true to form Arnold House seemed to be gliding along and over achieving well in all areas.

The In & Out Club in St James’ once again hosted the annual dinner. About fifty old boys turned out for the event on 24th May and the guests of honour included Arnold House Headmaster, Vivian Thomas, Deputy Headmaster, John Hill, Bursar, Richard Fletcher, and teachers George Lester, Chere Hunter and John Prosser.

Next came a bombshell. The headmaster listed the leavers’ destinations. Nine of the previous year’s leavers had gone on to St Pauls’ school, where, as everybody now knows, the current Chancellor of the Exchequer was educated.

The food was excellent, the wine and port flowed freely and, judging by the noise, so did the conversation around the tables.

Did I detect a note of bewilderment from the old boys educated at other London schools, notably St Paul’s main rival (and the Deputy Prime Minister’s old school), Westminster? Possibly.

There was also an impressive range of ages: from the Chairman of the 42 Club, Colin Winser, who left in 1944 to Henry Armes and Arthur Fokschaner who left in 2005 and Charlie Williams who left in 2004.

Not that age mattered much that evening - everybody was in the Arnold House Old Boys gang and made to feel very welcome.

Halfway through the dinner, Colin gave a rundown of the

School rivalries aside, the evening seemed a genuine success and if the In & Out club hadn’t resisted heavy pressure to keep its bar open, I’m sure the evening would have continued until the small hours of the next day.

The Arnold House Old Boys’ Dinner was a relaxed and happy affair - a fitting annual celebration of a wonderful shared start in life.

Christmas Catch Up

O

n the first Saturday after the end of the Autumn term there took place what has now become an Arnold House tradition – the annual Christmas Catch Up. Every December boys who have left in the two preceding years are invited to gather at the Abbey Road Pizza Express for a meal.

This year, as before, we had a great turnout and it was fantastic to be able to find out what everyone was up to.

We look forward to this year’s event, which will be held on Saturday 11th December 2010. Details will be sent out nearer the time but please keep that date free!

Twenty Years of First XI Cricket at Arnold House

T

he success of the present 1st XI got me thinking about cricket at Arnold House since I started in 1989. - - - - and - - - - - - who both scored 364 runs this season would certainly get into my all time XI. I then started to trawl the memory banks and old score books in an attempt to pick out the highlights and best players over the last twenty years.

My first season was 1990 when John Faulkner and I ran the XI. I am not sure whether it was that season or 1991 that we played Berkhamsted at Canons Park. They made 134 and at the end of the first over, in reply we were 0 – 2. Charlie Parker and Nicky Harrison then put on 135 to win the game.

Charlie went on to play for the first XI at Harrow and Nicky at Milfield.

In the early years Jamie Baldwin, who also went on Harrow was the outstanding bowler. He bowled at a lively pace with the ability to swing the ball both ways. In, I think, 1993 he took 32 wickets in the season.

James Chisnall was a useful bat. Some years later in a staff match v The Hall (he was their gapper) he hit me back over my head for 6!

The games were quite different in those days. Very rarely did we play a 20 over game.

Most matches were timed games, starting at two thirty and playing 20 overs from half past five. There is a match from 1995 against Lyndhurst when batting first at Canons Park the opposition made 92 all out from 35 overs. In reply Arnold House knocked off the runs for no wicket in 22 overs; Jamie Barker scored an undefeated 69. Jamie was an exceptional cricketer in a very good side.

In the 1995 season he scored 531 runs at an average 40.8. I must add that, the 1st XI played 20 matches that season of which they won 9, lost 4 and drew 7. The other outstanding player for us that season was Mathew Chataway (the son of the famous runner), a medium fast bowler, who took 31 wickets. Nick Clappe and Ollie Bateman where also very good all-round cricketers in that vintage XI.

David Stranger-Jones, who I believe is still playing for Brondsbury CC was the 1st XI ‘keeper for three years in the mid 1990’s.

He played for Middlesex and was a steady bat, but it was with the gloves that he really impressed. I would find it difficult to choose between him and - - - - - The best spin bowler we have had at Arnold House was, without any doubt, James Japhet. In the 1997 season he took 35 wickets. In the match v The Hall Arnold House were bowled out for a paltry 45.

It took The Hall 20 overs to reach the target for 7 down. James finished with the remarkable figures of 10.3 overs, 5 maidens, 7 wickets for 14 runs. Matthew Jackson was a determined bat although his running between the wickets gave me palpitations.

Although over the next few years there were some useful cricketers, no one noteworthy until the arrival of Rory Gallagher, a useful all-rounder, and David Stewart, ‘keeper batsman in the 2002 season. In that side, which I think was coached by Jon Gray, was a young Ben Stokes. He played in the first XI and was a talented left hand bat and quick(ish) left arm bowler. He went to Latymer Upper and continues to enjoy his cricket.

The next noteworthy side was the 2003 side captained by Ben and coached by the cricket mad Mr Gray. Mr Bagnall umpired many of the games and accompanied the boys on tour. Ivo Cunningham was a steady bat who made a number of significant contributions. He was a gapper at Arnold House recently and continues to play cricket. Nicky Clark was a good all-round cricketer while Rohan Sharma hit the ball as hard as any Under 13 boy I can recall.

All three - - - boys played cricket for the first XI. Sam scored runs in the 2003 side as a Year 7 boy, then went on to captain the XI the following season. Tom Julius followed his brother into the side and also into the captaincy role. He made runs, could keep wicket and bowled when required.

The Under 11 side that Tom captained went undefeated and proved to be a strong 1st XI. Sam Grabiner who went onto St Paul’s (and captained their U14 side) was perhaps the most improved cricketer in his time from colt (tearaway fast bowler) to 1st XI (destructive batsman). Of the same vintage was David Franklin, a stylish right hand bat who went on to Highgate.

In more recent years - - - - - - - - could bat and bowl excellent leg breaks.

Ricky Bagnall is of the opinion that he was as good a captain at this level that he has come across.

- - - - - - - was always a fine prospect.

Even in Year 1 he had a lovely bowling action and held the bat correctly. He had a successful cricket career at Arnold House with both bat and ball and has been followed into the side by his brother, - - who as a Year 7 boy has enjoyed considerable success this season.

Ricky Bagnall has done a great job of running the XI over the past few seasons and the teams have been successful. It is interesting to note that in the modern twenty over game that is played today scoring rates are much higher. Teams can often be confident in having to chase a target of 130 plus.

There is some real talent at present lower down the school at Arnold House. Year 3 in particular have some real prospects. I am sure under Ricky’s wing they will also be players that stick in the Arnold House memory.
