SUMMARY

Entire MRTS line from Beach to Velachery is built on the South Canal within the city .

Flood defences and channel improvement on the Buckingham Canal for the cost of Rs. 96 million

Desilting of South Buckingham Canal, construction of retaining wall, formation of jeep track along the banks and construction of 10 vents in North Buckingham Canal, repairs to its linings had been completed.

Rs. 1200 Crore was sanctioned. Rs. 750 Crore was used by CMWSSB to build Sewage treatment plants.

1,100-km long waterway system from Kakinada in Andhra Pradesh to Marakkanam in Tamil Nadu to be designated the NW-4.

Elevated Roads along Manali Oil Refinery Road – Central-Light House along Buckingham canal 16 in quantity at cost of Rs. 800Cr. Providing facilities by way of providing cycle tracks and footway along the banks of Adyar, Cooum and Buckingham canal apart from some roads envisaged for widening under SMP are contemplated.

Laying road along north Buckingham canal for a distance of nearly 12 km The new road will come up between Bharathi Nagar and Korukkupet, and Nehru Nagar and IOC, for nearly 1.5 km each, and between Kargil Nagar, Tiruvottiyur and Ennore for nearly 9 km.

Not Pallikaranai CMDA known Development Area proposed by NEERI for Immediate Development

The Union Government has decided to take up development of the stretch of 37 Kms of the National Waterway-four (NW-4) between Sholinganallur to Kalpakkam in South Buckingham Canal. Over Rs.123 crores has been sanctioned by the central government for the purpose and the project is expected to be completed in two years. ... The Union Government has decided to take up the development of stretch of approx 300 Km stretch of the National Waterway-4 (NW-4) between Peddaganjam to Ennore South for development of navigation. The main components of the project includes dredging and excavation to develop the navigational channel, construction of four terminals, review of the existing bridges / Foot bridges and installation of navigational aids. ... Work to be executed by IWAI · Dredging & excavation in the canal along with bank formation · Opening of the sea mouth & its maintenance · Construction & operation of the terminals · Installation & maintenance of navigational aids. Work to be executed through State Governments · Dismantling & removal of 3 existing navigational locks & construction of new locks of suitable size · Dismantling & removal of existing bridge & construction of new bridge with required navigational clearance as per the standard norms of Class-II waterways as the replacement Operation, maintenance & management of the locks shall be the responsibility of IWAI.

Intending to restore the Buckingham Canal in Chennai Metropolitan area from Ennore creek to Muttukadu backwaters, the Tamil Nadu Urban Infrastructure Financial Services Limited (TNUIFSL) has floated a tender for preparing the Detailed Project Report (DPR)

Development Area along Buckingham Canal

EYES ON THE CANAL is an exercise in participatory planning to make the canal a livable place for the residents of Chennai. The initiative involves various activities such as awareness walks, community engagement meetings and an open-ideas competition to generate interest and ownership for the canal which has suffered from our collective abandonment.

EYES ON THE CANAL is part of the Cities Fit for Climate Change project.

Cities Fit for Climate Change is a global project implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft fĂźr Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU) and its International Climate Initiative (IKI). The project also cooperates with the Federal Ministry of the Interior, Building and Community (BMI).

This project is in coordination with the Greater Chennai Corporation.
