Message from the Director Welcome to the 20th edition of the Annual AISB Parent and Teacher Organization (PTO) Auction Gala! Welcome to Our World for Excellence. This event has become a tradition in our international community, and it will continue to make a difference in the lives of young students worldwide. The funds raised are supporting AISB scholarship students as well as several great projects to benefit the AISB students. From drama and music productions to meeting authors and other spectacular educators, the AISB PTO Grants have enabled our children to go beyond the classroom and expand their horizons in a way that gives hope to our future. • AISB Scholarship Program – AISB offers scholarships to 12 eminent students every year and their experiences would not be complete without the continuous support of the PTO through the funds raised at the Gala. These funds enable these academically gifted young people to enjoy a full educational experience and change their lives for the better.
• PTO Grant Request Fund – This invaluable program created by the PTO helps fund projects that fall outside the normal operating budget. During the past year, we have added the PTO support through grants to programs that help our children understand the dangers of dependency, enriched the school’s literacy resources, student ceremonies and awards. I would also like to acknowledge the remarkable efforts of our PTO President, Mrs. Sorina MuresanTulea, the PTO Executive Committee, and in particular of Mrs. Oznur Ayman, Chair of tonight’s Ball. Message from the Gala Chair Dear AISB families and friends, Welcome to Our World for Excellence! I would like to thank you all for your support and participation in the 2017 AISB PTO Auction Gala: the 20th Anniversary Year! The Annual AISB PTO Auction Gala brings together over 250 members of the AISB Community in their wish to support the AISB Scholarship Program as well as the various grants that the Parent and Teacher Organization puts forth to support international students in their endeavors of being independent, innovative and engaged learners. The past 19 editions of the Gala have made history. Like each of the Galas before it, Our World for Excellence features a special theme, presents amazing student artwork for the live auction, engages participants in a silent auction for exquisite services and items and represents that moment in the year when elegance, good food and music come together to create unforgettable evenings. The 20th edition of the Annual Auction Gala is
a vivacious event, bathed in the color of energy, life and love for education and children. This event is possible thanks to the on-going support and generous contributions of sponsors, guests, parents, teachers, administrators, and students who work together for the same cause: excellence in education. I would like to express a heartfelt THANK YOU to the sponsors who have made Our World for Excellence possible. Their generosity enables us all the opportunity to contribute to this project. Auction Guidelines GENERAL AUCTION GUIDELINES 1. Upon arrival, register to receive your bid number and paddle. 2. Use this number and paddle to bid on all items. 3. Paddles will be collected at the end of the live auction.
4. Following the live auction, guests must pay for all of the items which were won* and take them upon departure from the Gala. 5. The Gala Committee will not be held responsible for any items left at the end of the evening.
AUCTION RULES 1. Silent Auction bids must respect stated minimum bid and stated minimum increment, or they will be disqualified. Bids may not be withdrawn. Highest bid at 22:00 wins. 2. In case of a dispute, the Gala Committee will determine the winning bidder. The decision will be final. 3. The Auctioneer may specify a minimum bid for any Live Auction item, and may remove an item
if it does not receive sufficient bids. The winner will be the highest bidder upon the fall of the Auctioneer’s gavel, and the Auctioneer will make the final decision on any dispute. 4. All bids using your number are binding offers for which you are financially responsible. 5. All items, however described, are sold “as is.” Some items have black-out dates or other restrictions, which the committee

will not mediate. All sales are final and items may not be exchanged or returned to the Gala or merchants. Some items are nontransferable. 6. SONORE STRING QUARTET / LIVE QUARTET
IAN EDWARDS / AUCTIONEER Ian Edwards is a graduate of Trent University (Honours B.A. English & History) and the University of Toronto (B.Ed.), and has spent most of the last 20 years outside of Canada, starting in Japan, and including (previous to Romania) Singapore and Turkey.
Sonore String Quartet brings together four talented young ladies, Olga, Teodora, Laura and Gabriela, alumni of the National University of Music from Bucharest. Having been taught in the school of classical interpretation, their passion for music is not limited to classical music alone, the quartet approaching a large range of musical styles, from Vivaldi and Mozart, to impressionist, modern and contemporary music. They also included in their repertoire covers of some well-known pieces – classical rock, jazz, café-concert, waltzes, tangos and ambiance music – performed professionally and sensitively.
He is known for his dramatic flair and rapier wit, as well as his devastatingly good looks. He has never had his own television program, but he certainly should, and perhaps one day this will be a reality, to the delight of everyone, everywhere.
BOGDAN BRADU & MARFAR BAND / LIVE BAND MARFAR Band are known for surprising live performances, with pieces that are both original and full of energy. With extensive musical experience, MARFAR has a substantial portfolio of musical pieces, suitable for the widest of audiences. From disco, to ballads, to ’80s rock, MARFAR Band’s repertoire is incredibly versatile and can be adapted for any type of event. Becoming one of the most listened to cover bands, the presence of MARFAR Band in clubs and at private events was the natural progression for the growing number of fans.
NEW VEGAS SHOW / LIVE BAND New Vegas Show is a two-man show, fresh on the jazz/swing scene of Romania. It is composed of two exceptional professional soloists, Petru Calinescu and Maximilian Muntean, who both have a genuine love for the Great American Songbook repertoire. New Vegas Show is an exclusive and unique musical concept, touching on elegance and great taste; a tribute that brings the audience right back to the ’40s & ’50s.
MATTHEW JONES / AUCTIONEER Matthew Jones is a diplomat in Bucharest. Before coming to Romania, he and his family lived in Jamaica and India. Prior to government work, Matthew worked as a newspaper reporter and editor in Brazil and the United States, as a documentary filmmaker in Washington, D.C. and New York City, and as a teacher in Hungary.
Petru graduated from the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts, under the guidance of Sir Paul McCartney, while Maximilian completed his studies at the Bucharest School of Arts. They both have a wide experience in performance, both in Romania and abroad. Together, they participated in the 2013 Eurovision Song Contest, reaching the semifinal of the national phase.
DJ ALEX / DJ DJ Alex is a 24-year-old DJ who has successfully entertained thousands of people since 2010. He enjoys making his guests smile and is passionate about the music he plays, particularly favorites such as Oriental, Turkish, deep house, dance, jazz, and Latino. Having played at many private events at venues including the JW Marriott Bucharest Grand Hotel, Athénée Palace Hilton Bucharest Hotel, Radisson Blu Hotel Bucharest and Uptown Restaurant, DJ Alex enjoys building a great atmosphere for guests.

We all leave our impressions on this world. During our study of geometric elements in textiles, Grade 4 has created block prints using geometric and organic forms. The individual prints come together to create a beautiful picture.

We are all unique. Nothing shows this more than our handprints. In our study of clay, each of the EC4 students has captured their handprint in clay. The clay relief sculptures are curated in a collection representing the burgeoning leaves of spring.

Kindergarten are so knowledgeable about the human heart and blood system and how it transports oxygen and therefore life and energy around their active bodies. Here they each created a colorful valentine heart to bring love and warmth into anyone’s life.

‘UP-CIRCLED’ FRAME
Learning about making our earth a better place, the first grade has been re-using and upcycling old things to create new inspirational art pieces. Here an old frame, combined with many jar lids, were transformed into a colorful environmentally friendly mirror frame – filled with circular mini-masterpieces. Enjoy gazing in and around it on any wall at home!

COLORFUL CITYSCAPE
Second Grade students have been creating cityscapes, or urban landscapes, using primary, black and white tempera colors to practice color mixing. Each choice of city or town had a personal value or interest to them. Here each student crafted one building with colored papers to create the most unique cityscape of all. A glorious upgrade to any urban or suburban living space!

In this collection, we used metal to create textures. During our study of design elements across cultures, Grade 5 has created their own designs in metal relief. The mosaic of metal reliefs showcases our similarities and what makes us unique.

These pieces are part of the Paint for Education collection donated by the service learning group of the same name. Paint for Education aims to use art as a medium to raise money for educational opportunities. The group is led by High School students, and all the proceeds from this collection will go towards the provision of scholarships.

CIRCULATORY SYSTEM The painting shows an abstract close-up of a vein’s blood flow from the human circulatory system surrounded by muscle fibers. Giulia Hutanu was inspired by 20th century Paul Klee’s theoretical guide on how to be an artist, one of the lessons being the visual reference; that one should study the bodily process.
