It’s amazing to think that just one year ago, we gathered with 1,000 of our friends and neighbors at the Pennsylvania Convention Center to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Urban Affairs Coalition. While our venue is different this year, our commitment to being a key connector and convener to make our communities better is stronger than ever.

In just a short amount of time, so much has changed – yet so much remains the same. In the past year, we have faced some of the greatest tests in modern humanity. COVID-19 has exposed fatal inequities in our healthcare system, widespread outrage about persistent racial injustice has poured onto our streets, and economic uncertainty has put families on the financial brink.

Through it all, the Coalition has been a leader on the frontlines. Together with our Partners, we accomplish what no one organization can do alone – improve the quality of life, build wealth, and solve critical issues in our region.

On November 20, 2020, we are gathering virtually in solidarity of one important principle: this is a movement, not just a moment to end racism. It is a movement to change society for the better. It is a movement to amplify the voice of marginalized communities. It is a movement to challenge the status quo and create a new state of play.

The Coalition is here to enable this important work and ensure that these conversations continue on, even when the camera lights are not shining on our communities. This work requires consistent, ongoing engagement, involvement, and persistence. It’s not always going to be easy, it’s not always going to be comfortable -- but together, we can be the change we want to see. Your support affirms that the impact of the Coalition continues to strengthen our communities. Your voices underscore that we are in this together, to better our society.

Dear Coalition Family, "I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: ‘We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.'" - Martin Luther King, Jr. This year 2020 has presented more challenges than many of us have seen in our lifetimes. Our communities, our city, and our nation have endured pain and hardship at the hands of a global pandemic that has disproportionately impacted low income and communities of color, coupled with a national reckoning over racial injustice that has stained the fabric of America for far too long.

Today, we are faced with the stark reality that 57 years after Dr. Luther King’s rousing speech during the 1963 March on Washington, in which he called for an end to racism in the United States, it still remains.

How Did We Get Here?

We must not be afraid to talk about race and racism. The old

adage that says in part if we do not know our past, we are doomed to repeat it, and this is true when we look at the issue of race and racism. Many believe that the concept of race was always with us and that we then developed racist ideas, followed by the development of racist policies. The true order of events though is quite different. In reality, the policy of racism was first created to further self-interest - the lucrative trade and enslavement of Africans by Europeans and American settlers who then created racial or color distinctions to justify the policy. This created a system of racism and white supremacy.

The concept of “race” is not based in scientific fact - it is a human invention, a social construct. Historians have looked at the development of racial and racist ideas beginning with the ancient world, when there was no notion of race, up to the beginning of the European and American slave trade.

Though slavery existed in Europe, it’s deep roots in America continue to exist as it was a part of America’s founding. Even after we officially ended slavery in 1865, 89 years after the founding of America, we continued building a system that said black, brown and native Americans were not full citizens and did not deserve equal opportunity or equal justice. As our country and its institutions grew, the deep roots of structural racism took hold of every facet of our social fabric; from our education systems, healthcare, housing, employment and policing.

African Americans and those of good will have fought this system first by organizing to escape slavery by moving to states and other countries that outlawed slavery. To Reconstruction where the first African Americans were elected to office in the southern states, to fighting lynching, Jim Crow and legal segregation.

Each fight bought progress but not an end to this oppressive practice in almost every institution in our country.

Sadly, racist systems and sentiment - whether overt or unconscious - continue, and is still a major obstacle facing Black Americans today. As a product of fear and ignorance First Lady Michelle Obama recently said, “Race and racism is a reality that so many of us grow up learning to just deal with.”

The Cost of Racism As the injustices continue, the reality is that they affect each and every one of us, and not just people of color. On top of the longstanding problems of racism and discrimination against minority groups in America - which have been so acutely highlighted by the COVID-19 pandemic and continued violence against Black people at the hands of the police in cities and towns across the country - is the idea that this inequality produces real economic costs and social losses.

A September 2020 report from Citi Global Perspectives & Solutions found that the persistent racial gap between Black and white Americans has cost the U.S. GDP an estimated $16 billion over the past 20 years. This figure says nothing of the racial gap in unemployment, net worth, debt levels, wages, home ownership, college degree attainment, business financing, education spending, and rates of imprisonment and sentencing - gaps that have in too many cases widened in the years after the passage of the civil rights acts of 1965 and 1968. Though almost 75 percent of African Americans live above the poverty line, 25 percent do not and the wage and income gap between black and white workers is still too high.

A Time for Action

Ending racism is both an individual and collective task. Together, we - Americans of all backgrounds - must “own the past so we can build a new future.” It will be uncomfortable and difficult, but together we will persevere and build the future we want to see. I believe we can do this by: Understanding our own actions and how they contribute to racist policies and systems and change them; Understanding that systemic racism goes beyond police reform; Being an Antiracist by speaking up against racism in social networks and our workplaces; and Sparking political engagement to end racism.

The Urban Affairs Coalition (UAC) is ready to resume the conversation and take action, as we have many times throughout our deep history. Ending Racism: This is a Movement, Not a Moment is the start of this difficult conversation. Together, we will learn from the events of 2020 and establish priorities shared by our communities, businesses, government, and civic leaders. Together, we will turn words into action, create a basis for healing, and rebuild our society. We will be the generation to end racism, once and for all.

I am grateful for the support of all those who give us the hope we need to inspire this important conversation.

First and foremost, I must recognize the leadership of UAC’s Board, led by our wonderful chair Jim Mergiotti, our Partners, and all of our employees - your guidance, support and on-the-ground work are helping to make “good trouble” and change society for the better. And most importantly, we have sponsors, both public and private, who have come together to support UAC, the largest African American-led fiscal sponsor in the country.

Collectively, thanks to your efforts, we have exceeded our fundraising goal, all in the name of Ending Racism.

I am hopeful because I know that not one of us is born hating another. I am hopeful because I believe that we can unlearn this behavior. The Ending Racism Partnership is a citywide, participatory collaboration of Philadelphia residents, leaders, and influencers from community, business, government, and philanthropy to end racial injustice and economic inequality, starting with our city. The Partnership is co-convened by Urban Affairs Coalition, Independence Blue Cross, and Rev. We are facilitating community roundtable conversations with Philadelphia residents to talk about racism and equity in five areas we are calling pillars for Equity in Action: Housing, Health, Employment, Education, Criminal Justice & Police Accountability.

The outcome of this process will be an action plan for a sustained, collaborative cross-sector effort to move the needle on racism in Philadelphia and beyond.

ABOUT THE URBAN AFFAIRS COALITION

In 1968, just days after Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated, a coalition of Philadelphia’s leaders gathered at the Philadelphia Savings Fund Society Building at 12th & Chestnut Streets.

Fearful the riots across the country could ignite riots in Philadelphia, the leaders gathered to discuss how the city would and should react to a hurting populous in this terrible tragedy.

Charles “Charlie” W. Bowser – lawyer and the first African American to become Deputy Mayor in Philadelphia – led the discussions.

During the hours spent at this meeting, leaders gained consensus and determined that the best way to quell the community’s unrest was an investment in hope. Over a two-day span, the leaders’ investment was a commitment of more than one million dollars that would be invested in needed community resources. And, most importantly, the leaders empowered community groups and individuals to direct how those funds would be spent. This historic partnership between business, government, labor, and community leaders resulted in the founding of The Philadelphia Urban Coalition in 1969.

The Philadelphia Urban Coalition, “was created to fight inner city and other social inequities by bringing together the various public and private sectors in our city… not so much a new organization as a new structure through which existing organizations and existing leadership can coordinate and expand their efforts.” This model, as a Home for Nonprofits, has been the essence of the Coalition’s existence over the last 50 years.

Our Mission The Urban Affairs Coalition unites government, business, neighborhoods, and individual initiative to improve the quality of life in the region, build wealth in urban communities, and solve emerging issues.

Our Partners The problems we face are far too complex for one entity to solve on its own. That is why UAC is a Home for Nonprofits - a Coalition of 80+ partner organizations, large and small, working on diverse issues that immediately affect communities. We deliver infrastructure for community empowerment that strengthens nonprofit organizations through fiscal sponsorship, shared services, program development, and capacity building; improving life chances for youth and young adults; and providing economic opportunity to low-income households, working families, and disadvantaged businesses.
