History of Urban Affairs Coalition A Home for Nonprofits In 1968, just days after Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated, a coalition of Philadelphia’s leaders gathered at the Philadelphia Savings Fund Society Building at 12th & Chestnut Streets. The leaders discussed how the city would and should react to a hurting populous in this terrible tragedy. Charles “Charlie” W. Bowser – lawyer and the first African American to become Deputy Mayor in Philadelphia – led the discussions.

Over the hours of this meeting, and the days to follow, these leaders were able to develop consensus that the best way to quell community unrest was an investment in hope. They made a commitment of more than $1 million that would be invested in needed community resources; And, most importantly, these leaders empowered community groups and individuals to direct how those funds would be spent. This historic, partnership between business, government, labor, and community leaders resulted in the founding of The Philadelphia Urban Coalition in 1969.

The Philadelphia Urban Coalition, “was created to fight inner city and other social inequities by bringing together the various public and private sectors in our city… not so much a new organization as a new structure though which existing organizations and existing leadership can coordinate and expand their efforts.” This model, as a Home for Nonprofits, has been the essence of the Urban Affairs Coalition’s existence over the last 50 years.

Our Mission

The Urban ���� Coalition unites government, business, neighborhoods, and individual initiative to improve the quality of life in the region, build wealth in urban communities, and solve emerging issues.

UAC was founded as an unprecedented and revolutionary partnership between business, government and community leaders established to eliminate poverty, discrimination and civic unrest, and to secure human and civil rights in the city of Philadelphia.

Today, UAC is a coalition of over 80 program partners with priorities focused on the core issues facing the region - strengthening communities, employment, and economic opportunity. The organization combines in-house, direct service initiatives with �scal sponsorship to catalyze organizational efficiency and help partners retain focus on service their communities and ful� llment of their missions.

Seed Stage is the product of the Urban Affairs Coalition's core belief that no one should be denied the opportunity to create impact in their community.

Economic Development Projects (EDP): EDP acts as an independent consultant to influence wealth building policy by promoting business development and employment for minorities, women, and community residents.

EDP consultants partner with project developers and owners – such as hospitals, universities, and museums – to develop Economic Opportunity Plans (EOP). Through the EOP process, EDP helps its clients award contracts to Minority, Women and Disabled Businesses; and assists in successfully employing women, minorities, and residents of communities where projects are built. Health and HIV Prevention The Health and HIV Prevention Consortium was devised to better serve vulnerable communities’ health needs and to strengthen each UAC Program Partner by finding opportunities for them to educate, collaborate, and mobilize to amplify their impact. UAC encourages partners to find synergies in marketing, referrals, human resources, front-line staff, intersectional mobilization and reciprocal capacity building efforts to drive systematic change.

One Day At A Time (ODAAT) is dedicated to serving low-income and homeless men and women and their families in the Philadelphia area who are in recovery from addiction and HIV/AIDS. ODAAT utilizes a community-based recovery model and support system, allowing people to recover in the same environment in which they became addicted.

Collective Reach of the Consortium

COLOURS provides culturally responsive heath and human services to LGBTQ people of color in Philadelphia and surrounding counties in Pennsylvania and Southern New Jersey with a focus on sexually transmitted diseases and HIV.

Galaei is a queer Latin@ social justice organization that embodies the common history of resistance and resilience of Latin@ and queer people. Galaei is committed to the advancement de nuestra familia through leadership and economic development, sexual empowerment, and grassroots organizing. *Health partnerships include: AACO (AIDS Activities Coordinating Office), Independence Blue Cross, and AmeriHealth.

SELF, Inc. is unswerving in its work to eradicate homelessness in Philadelphia and serve as a national model for innovative programming that prevents homelessness, supports recovery from substance addiction, and assists those experiencing or on the verge of experiencing homelessness. With compassion at its core, SELF, inc’s approach uses industry best practices and evidence-based programming to pave the way for personal and community transformation.
