Are you passionate about horses and looking for a career in this field? The Bachelor of Equine Science is a new three-year program to prepare you for such a career while studying at one of the world’s top 100 universities. Equine science covers horse nutrition, breeding, exercise physiology, health and rehabilitation, welfare and behaviour and explores the interaction between horse and rider. UQ Gatton is home to world-renowned scientists with expertise in horse nutrition, breeding, exercise physiology, equitation, rehabilitation, welfare and behaviour. You will have access to the world-class Equine Precinct on campus which includes equitation arenas, breeding and horsehandling facilities, day yards and stabling amenities. While studying Equine Science, you will acquire scientific knowledge which can be applied within an industry setting to improve the management, performance and welfare of racehorses, performance horses and horses used for pleasure. Learning from UQ’s internationally regarded equine academic staff, you will acquire skills to improve outcomes for horses, riders and the equine industry in general.

This program provides you with an understanding of animal science principles and social and community issues. You will work with world-class researchers with industry connections and collaborations, who help industry solve pressing issues. As you progress through the program you will work extensively with horses from the UQ Australian Stock Horse stud in conjunction with UQ’s expert instructors and lecturers. You might also join the UQ Equestrian Club, which is a part of UQ Sport. Further hands-on training is available by including a vocational program with your studies or taking part in extended industry placements.

The UQ Bachelor of Sustainable Agriculture is a new, three-year program which will provide you with the skills and knowledge to help industry tackle some of the big problems facing our planet. Sustainable food production has never been more important, with the world population now exceeding 7 billion people and predicted to reach 8 to 10 billion people by 2050. At the same time, the environmental pressures on our planet have never been greater. A career in sustainable agriculture will enable you to acquire the scientific and managerial principles, helping commercial farmers to sustainably increase their output of food and fibre to feed and clothe the world with the least environmental and social impact.

What you will study The Bachelor of Sustainable Agriculture will expose you to the scientific and practical aspects of the sustainable agriculture industry. You will acquire skills and knowledge from researchers at UQ’s Gatton campus, who focus on three specialisations to develop successful sustainable agriculture practices.

This 3-year program in Sustainable Agriculture will provide you with the scientific and practical aspects of the agriculture industry. You will acquire skills and knowledge from researchers at UQ’s Gatton campus in one of three specialised majors: agronomy, horticulture and livestock and poultry science. Agronomy – use scientific principles to enhance the production of crops for food and energy, and to manage the environmental impacts of agriculture. Agronomists are very much in demand. Learn from leading plant and soil scientists who help farmers and producers use their land more effectively, increase their yields, and assist in solving or preventing problems with soils and crops. Horticulture – investigate the intensive production of fruit, vegetables, nursery and floricultural crops, turf and plants for recreational and therapeutic benefit and to enhance the urban landscape. You will acquire skills in horticulture, which deals with science, technology and business in intensive plant production. Livestock and poultry science – examine principles of animal behaviour and management to ensure the profitable, ethical and sustainable management of livestock and poultry.

The Bachelor of Veterinary Technology is a new, three-year program which addresses scientific and managerial principles underpinning veterinary technology. This program will provide you with an understanding of scientific principles and the skill to apply this knowledge to solve problems. Veterinary technology produces paraveterinary healthcare specialists who contribute to maintaining biosecurity. You will be equipped with an understanding of a variety of scientific principles and the skill to apply this knowledge to solve problems. While veterinary technology is still an emerging profession in Australia and internationally, UQ is already a leader in this field with the best specialist veterinary and animal research facilities in the southern hemisphere. $100 million invested in purpose built clinical, teaching and research facilities including the Small Animal Hospital, Equine Specialist Hospital and Veterinary Teaching Laboratories at the Gatton campus. UQ’s diagnostic, research and treatment expertise is recognised nationally by the Australasian Veterinary Boards Council and internationally by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons and the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Practical learning experience and industry connections During your studies, you will undertake clinical rotations and participate in industry placement programs in locations such as vet clinics, vet hospitals, wildlife parks, government agencies, welfare organisations, animal breeding enterprises and pharmaceutical companies. Industry placements give you practical, handson work experience. They are also great opportunities to establish industry contacts and gain current, industryrelevant experience.

What you will study As a veterinary technologist you will be an integral member of an animal healthcare team caring for and handling companion and production animals, and skilled in routine laboratory and clinical support procedures for veterinary radiography, anaesthesia, surgery, pathology, clinical pathology, nutrition, veterinary therapeutics, and professional communications and animal reproduction. You will study animal handling, welfare and behaviour, clinical aspects of small and large animal health, applied and clinical nutrition, veterinary pharmacology, veterinary pathology, veterinary therapeutics, diagnostic practices,

veterinary surgical nursing principles, and veterinary practice management. You will develop the attributes of critical thinking, problem solving and self-directed learning, preparing you for supervisory and management roles. As you progress through the program, you can choose from a range of electives.

Dual qualification You also have the option to complete a dual qualification, the Bachelor of Veterinary Technology degree plus a Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing or the Bachelor of Agribusiness.

The Bachelor of Wildlife Science is a new, three-year, “hands on” degree that focuses on animal biology and management of wild animals, including their ecology and conservation. As a wildlife scientist you will study native and exotic amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals in their natural or man-made environments, their biodiversity, and the emerging issues associated with human-wildlife interactions. UQ is ranked one of the world’s top 100 universities and is already a leader in this field with the best specialist animal research and veterinary facilities in the southern hemisphere. As a Bachelor of Wildlife Science student, you will work with UQ Gatton’s wildlife scientists, who are involved in the conservation and management of noncaptive and captive wildlife as well as exotic animals in Australia and overseas. You will learn from biologists as they focus on wildlife anatomy and physiology, captive breeding, reproduction, nutrition, health, husbandry, ecology, welfare and behaviour. The UQ Native Wildlife Teaching Facility at the campus is the home to endangered and non-endangered species and provides the focus for both teaching and research programs.
