FOSTERING RELATIONSHIPS THROUGH HEALTH AND FITNESS My project ‘Uptown Recreation Centre’ is set in Uptown, Tamaki Makaurau, a common passage way for Aucklanders travelling in and out of the city. URC is located on the corner of Akiraho Street and Mount Eden Road. The site is adjacent to Maungawhau Train Station, a flood prone area identified within Uptown. The form of the ‘URC’ is inspired by the natural topography of a Maunga, which can be showcased from key view shafts from the site. The Kaupapa of my project is a Community Sports and Recreation Centre that has a flexible and dynamic program. The URC will work in conjunction with the 6 Uptown Pillars to promote physical activity through the individual programmes: Swimming Pool, Multi-Functional Basketball Court, Gym, Dance Studio, Community Meeting Spaces and Athlete Accommodation. The program aids as a hub of sanctuary and enjoyment which promotes growth through health and fitness. The project aims to create synergy and foster relationships for community members regardless of age, culture and gender. Fabricating a healthy social concourse for the city, placed in close connection to the central pedestrian way.

The Uptown Recreation Centre will be an energy positive building that contributes to the transformative regeneration agenda for Uptown now and in 100 years’ time. Ecologically the project aims to mitigate how energy and water is used and collected on site to create a closed loop system. The project is designed with a combination of biobased materials such as engineered timber and recycled materials from existing buildings. The vertical timber cladding and high stud height, blends into the landscape and responds to key features of the existing villas which stood onsite before this project.
