Brief
The project brief is to design a mixed-use residential building within the new site of Maungawhau Station in Uptown. The project contains specific requirements that help us analyse the site and its character and develop a group proposal that gives the place an urban strategy for subdividing the area into separate 500m2 lots.

Projection and Visual Performance

My central concept is the idea of Projection. This concept relates to my idea of giving the people of Uptown a unique visual performance by utilising the ventilation shaft. Many ways of performance usually incorporate music that attracts people into a public space; I want to attract them visually with something they have not seen before within the vibrant site of Uptown.

One of the main aims of this brief was to create something that builds on Upwtown’s nature. Projection can show a lot about someone's personality. We can project how we are as humans to other people and as a way to express our feelings as well. My clients are creative people, particularly in film study and performing arts; I want to design architecture that allows them to project their character to the public. I want to create architecture that “projects” and “performs” to help tell a story about Uptown’s character and meaning to the people outside of Uptown

Ad This idea of rotatable doors relates to my concept of projection as it projects different qualities of light into the space. It can give opportunities for natural ventilation to flow in and out of the space as well. This minimises additional energy consumption reducing operational costs resulting in a more sustainable design.
