Newsletter Vol. 1: January, 2018

2017 Year In Review The Historic Marble Hill Community Association kicked off 2017 celebrating outgoing officers Steva Komeh-Nkrumah, and Ethel Witherspoon for their outstanding leadership, hard work, and commitment.

The Association welcomed new leadership including Atiba Nkrumah, President; Kory Gedin, Vice-President; Jules Dunham Howie, Secretary; Joan Davis, Treasurer; Dan Midvidy, Parliamentarian; and Camel Palmer, Sargent At Arms.

New leadership has worked to strengthen the Association’s organizational infrastructure and operations. Monthly meetings focused on identifying community needs and establishing committees to move community work forward. The Association hosted two community cookouts and two community clean-ups; participated in the Upton Master Planning process; Partnered with Renaissance High School and Roots of Scouting to support youth activities; and hosted a holiday potluck.

The Historic Marble Hill Community Association also NETW ORKS mourned the loss of Mrs. Camel Palmer, a member of the Marble Hill Community for over 60 years, and a tremendous community advocate, and leader. She will be sorely missed!

Association Committees

Children and Youth Engagement Committee:

The Marble Hill Community Association has established five committees to support community growth and development. The Marble Hill Community Association invites all community homeowners, renters, and stakeholders to join a committee and become engaged in shaping our community’s future.

An overview of the committees is below.

Community Development Committee:

Finance Committee:

The Community Development Committee (CDC) examines the short-term and longterm economic and community development needs of the Historic Marble Hill Community. The committee identifies strategies and projects that will provide sound economic development and a stronger sense of community. The committee supports Upton’s Developer Guidelines and works with UPC and City agencies to provide coordinated communication while representing community development interests including homeownership development initiatives. The committee manages the Architectural Review process for the community to promote the rich history of Historic Marble Hill and develop a positive community perception. The committee educates homeowners and provide CHAP compliance supports.

The Finance Committee is working in conjunction with the Board of Directors to raise the resources necessary to finance the work of transforming the Marble Hill Community. The committee is tasked with organize fundraising activities and developing materials to raise funds. The committee writes and applies for grants to fund various aspects of a community development strategy.

The Children and Youth Engagement Committee will coordinate outreach to young people in the community and seek to get them engaged in positive community development activities. The Children and Youth Engagement Committee is develop partnerships with local community schools and seeks to be a positive influence on young people in Marble Hill and beyond.

Beatification and Security Committee:

Historic Marble Hill Community Association membership is open to all individuals 18 years or older who live or work, or own a business or own real property in the Marble Hill Community as defined by the zip code 21217 in the Upton Neighborhood.

Outreach and Communication Committee:

The Outreach and Communication Committee is developing a comprehensive community outreach and engagement strategy. The committee is developing coordinated community outreach efforts, comprehensive marketing materials, and creating a website for the community.

Ethel Witherspoon & Dan Midvidy, Co-Chairs

The Beautification and Security Committee works to enhance the overall appearance of Historic Marble Hill and the quality of life of all residents. The committee develops strategies to address community beatification issues including block beatification, green space development and maintenance, rodent abatement, dumping and garbage collection, signage, lighting, and community clean-ups. The committee develops strategies to eliminate crime and ensure community security.

Dues are $60.00 per year, which is only $5.00 per month. Dues are due by January 31st annually.

Association Activities This summer the Beautification Committee led efforts to beautify the Henry Highland Garnet Park with fellows from John Hopkins University during the President’s Day of Service.

The Historic Marble Hill Community Association will be holding a special election in March, 2018 to fill three vacant board seats. Details regarding the nomination process will be shared in the near future.

Moving Forward in 2018 We celebrate the life, legacy, and vision of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. this month.

As we move forward in 2018, it is our responsibility to be the advocates of change in our community. The imprint left

by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. serves as an invigoration of hope and opportunity. We must emulate his passion for service to positively impact the Historic Marble Hill Community!

The Historic Marble Hill Community Association is a member of the Upton Neighborhood. The Upton Planning Committee, (UPC), is the umbrella organization coordinating revitalization efforts in Upton. UPC facilitated the 2026 Upton Master Planning process and is leading the implementation efforts.

Marble Hill community members are encouraged to participate in monthly UPC meetings, held every second Thursday of the Month, 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Providence Baptist Church located at 1401 Pennsylvania Ave, Baltimore, MD 21217.

UPTON DEVELOPER MEETINGS Upton has developed a set of developer guidelines outlining the communities development priorities.

UPC coordinates a monthly developers meeting to discuss proposed community development projects and to strategize on community development efforts.

If you are working on a development project or if you want to develop in the Marble Hill community you are encouraged to participate in monthly developer meetings. Developer meetings are held every first Friday of the Month, 10:00 a.m. at the Pennsylvania Avenue Market located at 1701 Pennsylvania Avenue, Baltimore, MD 21217.
