UPTheater: The Revolutionists Program

Page 1

The University of Portland Theater respectfully acknowledges that our space rests on the traditional village sites of the Multnomah, Wasco, Cowlitz, Kathlamet, Clackamas, Bands of Chinook, Tualatin, Kalapuya, Molalla and many other Tribes who made their homes along the Columbia (Wimahl) and Willamette (Whilamut) rivers. The Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians and the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde currently represent many of these tribes.

We give thanks to them; that we are here on their unceded lands and commit to treating their space as a living breathing entity that needs care and stewardship. We give thanks to this land as we continue to speak up for justice, a place in history, and a place in a future that demands to be better.

Go Beyond Acnowledgement.

FROM THE DIRECTOR

I never cease to be inspired by artists. There is a specific kind of magic in watching a cast take an event from 1793 and find its heartbeat in 2026.

As we dissected the identities of these four extraordinary women, we remained open to the lessons they had to teach us. We searched for "enlightenment" on how to navigate our own fractured history, hoping for a roadmap. What we found wasn't a set of instructions, but a spirit: resilience. These women face impossible choices in an impossible time. They are flawed, they are scared, and they are remarkably human. Through them, we discovered that comradery is its own form of revolution. They pushed through the fear so that we might have the courage to do the same. Thank you for joining us in this "dream" of history—may it leave you a little more ready to fight for your own story.

Biographies in Alphabetical Order

Jewel DeVyldere, she/her (Charlotte Corday), is a junior at the University of Portland majoring in Psychology and Theatre Arts. Some other notable roles from her time at UP include The Thanksgiving Play as an Ensemble/ Understudy, Scrooge in VHS Christmas Carol, and gasp! another Charlotte (and Kitty) in Pride and Prejudice. Jewel also works as secretary for UP’s Playhouse Theatre club, a Resident Assistant for HagTy, and a researcher for the CHIRP lab investigating religion and power. She’s super excited to show you the gorgeously complex world of these very real, very influential women. She’d also like to thank the family members who are currently looking at the program to see if they get a shout out. Y’all are great :)

Zoe Thyrza Diao, she/her (Ensemble / U.S.), is a junior Biology and Theater double major with a Neuroscience Studies minor from Las Vegas, NV. She has been in theatre since her freshman year of high school, and you may have seen her onstage as Dee Dee Allen in The Prom or as Maya in TBA. In the free time she has, she is heavily involved in FASA sa UP as their PCN Co-Chair and is preparing for the 12th Annual Pilipino Cultural Night on April 11. The Revolutionists has given a wonderful opportunity for Zoe to not only work on her craft but also to ask you to look

at this story through modern eyes. We are asked to speak up and against injustice in our communities, especially as our world becomes more and more troubled. Please spread awareness, kindness, compassion, and empathy. Free Palestine always, ICE out, and don’t settle for the story they’re giving out. Enjoy the show!

Laya Duguid, she/her (Olympe de Gouges), is a senior Political Science major and Theater minor from Royse City, Texas. You may have seen her on stage for The Effect, Forefolk (devised show), or most recently as Alicia in Larissa Fasthorse’s The Thanksgiving Play. This is her last on-stage role at UP, she is grateful to the few who have supported and helped her grow as an artist during her time here. Especially Josie Seid and Andy Christensen, thank you. She is grateful to be apart of women’s revolution play where women of color are a pivotal part of the story, when we’re usually fighting to be heard, and as you’ll see, the fight is never over.

Sadie Dunlap, she/her (Ensemble / U.S.), is a first-year Mechanical Engineering major with a minor in Theater. The Revolutionists will be her mainstage acting debut at the University of Portland, having previously been Assistant Stage Manager for The Thanksgiving Play, and she is involved with the UP Playhouse Theater as well.
