Gap Filling Winter feels like an unnaturally big gap for us—no watering, no customers, no sun. But as dreary as it may be, it is an important gap; the plants need it and so do we! We use this gap to get ready for the straight 282 days of work to come! Part of that gap is study time: recertification updates, read the industry journals, trial and trend reports. One thing that appears to be happening is a bit of fine tuning within the breeding industry. There are still plenty of new hybrids coming with new colors and habits, etc., but there are deeper culls happening. Is this red leaved coral bell REALLY better? Hardier, disease and insect resistant, truly and uniquely better in my garden?

This would be a welcome bit of info when new plants are introduced and that is exactly what is happening.

Our participation in last year’s pilot season of “Hand Picked For You” is just such a tool—local professionals accessing the viability and worth of new (and forgotten oldies, too) garden hybrids. Our goal is to be current, relevant AND available for your gardening needs. It all boils down to the individual scenario that is your garden and who better to assist then your local nursery that shares the same scenarios.

Every spring brings the new, the better, and the best, and we will have them, but not without research. We love plants, so having the best is a pretty personal desire, and we will only offer what is promised to bring you picture-perfect, pure gardening joy,

Stone Wall Follies 2018 This will be the ten-year anniversary of the follies. We are striving to get all of our past teachers here for one big project. For that to happen we need students from the past plus those who have yet to experience the weekend. We will keep you abreast as to times/dates/ project, but if this is on your bucket list, we need to know soon. This will be an unrepeatable opportunity. Look at past projects—this one has the potential to beat them all. Please email me with your preconfirmed wishes to attend; this is key to getting all ‘ducks in a row’ as they say!

From the Publisher Welcome to 2018 and our 24th year publishing the Upstate Gardeners' Journal. 2017 was an excellent year for us, thanks largely to Debbie Eckerson and Cathy Monrad, my two right arms. It had its moments of sadness, though, like any year— the Rochester Civic Garden Center's announcement that it would soon dissolve being chief among them. With the new year came another loss when Ted “Doc Lilac” Collins died unexpectedly early in January. Ted was one of my best friends and my biggest supporter, cheerleader, and (at times) critic. To be honest, I still can't really believe he's gone. But he gave me enough advice and ideas to last a long, long time, and I'll continue to strive to make him proud.
