ANNUAL REPORT 2021

2021 ENDS ON HIGH NOTE

Regional investment surpassed $2.5 billion Imagine yourself on roller coaster ride: slowly climbing to a pinnacle, hearing a “click” and then plunging downward, before surging back up and twisting to your side. You feel a mix of adrenaline, fear, exhilaration, relief and joy as you loop around, eventually coasting to a stop. For many, that’s how much of the last few years have been. We entered into 2021 with the weight of the pandemic. We were cautiously optimistic about our ability to resume the in-person activities that enrich our work, and we were poised to maintain the digital and small-group engagements we initiated during 2020. Coming off of the roller coaster, it’s invigorating to report that 2021 was a sensational year for capital investment in the Upstate: 85 companies announced nearly $2.5 billion in capital investment and 8,745 jobs. The Upstate 10 counties account for nearly half of the $5.7 billion in 2021 capital investment and jobs announced by the SC Department of Commerce. Each of our counties had at least one announcement, and investments ranged in size and type, spanning multiple industries. Several of the state’s largest projects were within our region: Oshkosh Defense, Arthrex, Transcom, Pall Corporation and Walmart. We’re also seeing an increase in the number of projects emerging from site selection consultants, whose work has become increasingly important

amid the pandemic. It’s fitting that we’ve grown our focus on these Centers of Influence, hosting both virtual and in-person inbound events in 2021. Another Upstate bragging point: many existing industries announced large expansions: Lockheed Martin’s 300 new jobs in Greenville, Arthrex’s 500 new jobs in Anderson, and ZF’s 500 new jobs in Laurens. When existing industries continue to invest in our region, it sends the message that Upstate SC is a location that meets industry needs, backed by a proven workforce. That message is a testament to the power of #TeamUpstate and the collaborative, “can-do” environment that comes from your public and private leadership across the region. In 2022, we’re seeking investor support for our Strategic Planning Process, where we’ll explore how we can embrace opportunities that arise from digitization and automation, sustainability and electrification, entrepreneurship and maximizing economic participation. We know the future will hold more roller coaster hills and thrills, though a collaborative, proactive approach will allow us to step off the ride together once more shouting, “That was awesome! Let’s do it again.”

WHERE MANUFACTURING & TECHNOLOGY INTERSECT UPSTATE SITE CONSULTANT INBOUND IN SPARTANBURG Our largest consultant inbound event drew 11 site selection consultants to experience the Upstate in fall 2021. Hosted in Spartanburg, the event offered a chance to test-drive BMW’s automotive technology at the BMW Performance Center Driving Experience, hear how the Spark Center SC provided millions of dollars worth of market entry support to Keurig Dr Pepper’s roasting facility, tour Milliken & Company’s innovation gallery, and “speed date” our Local Economic Developers.

CELEBRATING CLEMSON AT INDY

Clemson University automotive engineering’s Deep Orange 12 driverless prototype served as the platform for the Indy Autonomous Challenge, and #TeamUpstate was there to celebrate the unveiling during the Indy 500, making our first trip with Locals and partners since the pandemic.
