Material World FAU’s fashion club teams up with the secondhand store Plato’s Closet to show students how to dress on a dime

t was 7:32 p.m., about half an hour before the Student Union’s Grand Palm Room became a full-out fashion haus.

Angela Caruso and Thivy Pham, the president and vice president of FAU’s fashion club Material World, stood next to each other and smiled while looking at the black curtain-draped stage before them. The curtains hid the models practicing their catwalks.

Material World partnered with the Boca location of the secondhand clothing store, Plato’s Closet, for their fall fashion show. She took her front seat right below center stage and the first model came out in black jeans with a leafy green print. Caruso told the onlookers how much the models’ outfits cost as each one walked by. This “Plato’s price” was compared to the original heftier retail price.

In 10 minutes, the event was over. Throughout the evening, audience members helped themselves to tropical-flavored starbursts, soft cookies with orange frosting, and an array of two-bite cupcakes.

Caruso, a senior and double-major in marketing and business management, started the fashion club two years ago when there was nothing at FAU affiliated with the fashion world ­— something she intended to change.

“I love fashion and I decided I couldn’t go four years at a university without doing something I was passionate about, so I started the club for that reason,” Caruso said.

In the two years since the club’s conception, she’s been instrumental in planning fashion shows each semester. Amid all the stress, Caruso is in her happy place.

“My favorite moments are the hectic stress that I’m feeling right now. I love it, I just feel very alive,” Caruso said. “I love seeing it all come together from everyone’s hard work over the months of putting this together. I just love seeing it come

together and put on stage and to life. It makes me very happy.”

With handling events being her strong suit, Caruso enjoyed dressing the models before they walked the runway. “The best part of planning this event would be definitely when we went and picked out all the styles for everyone and we got to style all the models. Plato’s Closet let us have free range of the store, and we just got to let our creativity flow,” Caruso said.

The theme of these fashion shows changes every semester.

Vice President Pham, a junior international business major, explained that last semester’s theme was “urban,” where the models and fashion club participants created their own outfits, and the semester prior to that was a spring fashion show.

This semester’s show teamed up with Plato’s Closet to emphasize dressing on a budget.

“In the past, we’ve modeled for Francesca’s, but Plato’s closet is more affordable to college students so we decided to partner up with them,” Pham said. “The manager of Plato’s Closet actually reached out to [Caruso], and then contacted her for the opportunity” Pham joined the fashion club her freshman year because she’s always had a “passion for fashion.”

As Caruso’s senior year closes in and fashionistas like Pham begin to take over the club and continue her legacy, she reflects on her absolute favorite memory with Material World.

“My favorite memory would be, I have to say, last year’s soiree. It was so much fun because we all got to know each other even more and we got to be really involved, not only in the club but in each others’ lives. I really loved it.”

The short-but-sweet event went over well as the crowd watched the models (three guys, the rest girls) walk the runway.

“I think the event went really well. It really showed the price range and how you can really get the style that you want at a lower price than the name brands that you could go to,” said sophomore and architecture major Kimberly Jaar.

“I think they put it together very nicely. I think the point was put across well. College students want to dress very well, but still have a low budget, so this was a good way to exhibit that,” said junior international business and linguistics double-major Daniella Malabad.

This semester’s show was one that could relate to all college students: shopping on a budget.

FAU’s oldest students take painting classes to fight memory loss Story By Sarah Pruzansky Contributor

T

rapped in the confines of her own home, 78-yearold Anita Flaster circles the kitchen trying to remember where the plastic containers go.

Anita is a patient at the FAU Memory and Wellness Center who also attends painting classes there.

The center has given Anita the opportunity to paint again and receive support after a downward spiral when she was no longer able to drive after being diagnosed with mild cognitive impairment.

Before she developed memory problems, she and her husband Sy lived in Hartford, Conn. She raised a family while she worked at Hartford Stamp Works, her family business, which created stamps for banks and law firms. Painting had been a thing of her past.

Beginning her work in high school, Anita was encouraged to pursue art when her teacher saw a sketch that she made. Anita went 18

on to take art classes in college; but two years later, Anita’s life became one dedicated to her family and her business.

Over time, Anita and her family ended up selling their business to a rival stamp house, and she and Sy moved to Florida.

Around the age of 74, Anita began to suffer from cognitive impairment.

“I was losing things,” Anita said. “[Sy] noticed it before I did.

I would say ‘Where did I put my whatever?’ And start walking around in circles looking for things.”

Sy said when Anita would empty the dishwasher and find a plastic container, she would search all the cabinets to find the others because she couldn’t remember.

At times, she would leave items on the counter and Sy would put them away for her.

“I didn’t even realize I was doing

that,” Anita said.

While Sy was involved with tennis and card games, Anita was always able to get in her silver Lexus and go shopping.

But then came the day when doctors told Anita she would no longer be able to drive.

“It was the biggest blow when I lost my driver’s license because I was independent before that and then I became totally dependent and angry at the world,” Anita said.

With all this anger and nowhere to go, Anita spent each day cooped up in the house doing chores and reading books by David Baldacci, Vince Flynn and Brad Thor.

“I think it gets to the point where you get depressed, you get a little cranky and you’re looking for activities,” Sy said.

The two of them claimed the loss of the driver’s license to be

Anita’s lowest point because she had nothing to occupy her time, and it made it difficult for her to get out of the house.

After three months spent in the house, Anita felt depressed and frustrated.

So Sy began searching the internet and making phone calls and soon enough he found a driver for Anita — Jodi Wigode.

“In the beginning, it was hard because she had to give up her independence,” Wigode said.

A couple afternoons out of the week, Wigode drives Anita around and spends time with her shopping, getting the groceries and going out for lunch.

around the house,” Anita said. “I really needed to get out of the house … She’s become a friend.

She’s really wonderful. I’d be out of my mind without her.”

Soon enough, Glenda Connolly, a licensed clinical social worker at FAU’s Memory and Wellness Center, suggested to Anita and Sy that Anita begin to attend the Adult Day Center — a center for adults with memory loss to engage in activities to help stimulate their mind and keep them busy.

On Anita’s first day at the center, Sy expected the worst. But Anita stayed the whole day and surprised Sy with her reaction.

“I was just pleased that she stayed the whole day,” Sy said.

Anita said Sy was waiting for her to call and beg him to take her home.

“I guess my initial reaction was not so much what she was doing, but that she was happy when she came out,” Sy said. “That was wonderful. It’s been great. So it’s just a feeling of accomplishment and she such great joy from Photo bygets Ryan Murphy 20

After two days at the center, Anita decided this was the place for her.

Not only did being at the center occupy her time, but it had also given her the inspiration and desire to start painting again — something she hadn’t done since college. “[The art class is] what’s making her happy,” Wigode said. “[What’s making her happy is] going to the art class and doing something she really loves to do.”

Now, Anita is taking three art classes — two painting and one sketching calss.

Anita gets her ideas for her paintings from pictures in magazines.

She prefers painting landscapes and flowers over people, claiming she doesn’t like painting anything that moves.

“I’m creating something and it’s looking like what I want it to look like, or it’s looking like a painting,” Anita said. “And that in itself, it just makes me feel good

that I’m able to capture what’s there. I mean if it stays still, I can paint it.”

Painting at the center has inspired Anita to start painting at home as well.

Anita and Sy have brought Anita’s paintings to get framed, and will be hanging the paintings up on their wall.

But this is not the only place Anita’s paintings are displayed for people to see. Five of her works — three acrylic paintings and two sketches — are on display at the Spanish River Library.

And this is all due to the Adult Day Center giving Anita the opportunity to return to painting, helping to keep her mind active and supporting her.

“The important thing relating to the Memory and Wellness Center is the stimulation is excellent,” Sy said. “You go to any other part of the body, you have to exercise it to keep it as fit as you can. They do a very good job here at doing that, the painting here you gotta use your brain and visual to keep

it going … If you just sit home alone and look at the outside, your brain’s gonna die.”

The Adult Day Center provides Anita classes throughout the day and memory quizzes to keep her mind going.

Anita described her life before she came to the center ­— after losing her driver’s license and before she got her driver — as depressing. While now, in contrast, she said she feels happy.

“She’s just going along and grateful for the things that she has,” Wigode said.

The Adult Day Center has given Anita the opportunity to improve their lives and many others after developing memory problems.

They offer painting classes, chair yoga, card games and much more.

According to FAU’s website, “participants receive as much individualized attention as possible and can develop and maintain personal interests and relationships in a more intimate setting.”

FOREWORD FAU athletics gears up for an eventful first season in Conference USA Story by Wesley Wright Sports Editor and Zack Kelberman Contributor

FAU men’s basketball begins its 20132014 campaign with Head Coach Mike Jarvis returning for his sixth season. Jarvis and company should pick up wins to open the season, but will likely find it daunting as the road schedule piles up.

Soon after finals conclude in early December, the Owls will find themselves on television. Fox Sports 1 will broadcast backto-back road contests at DePaul (Dec. 12) and Maryland (Dec. 14) .

FAU takes on the bulk of its new Conference USA schedule when the spring semester rolls around. Soon after spring break, the conference tournament tips off in El Paso, Texas from March 11-15.

Considering Jarvis is integrating four freshman and two transfer players –– all while navigating a new conference –– he might have to head back to the drawing board come summer.

Arguably the most successful sport on campus, FAU baseball returns to action with a bang –– a home doubleheader versus Notre Dame on Feb. 15.

Manager John McCormack’s team is fresh off last season’s Sun Belt Conference Tournament, with a Cinderella-like run in the NCAA Regional Tournament. The Owls came up just short of reaching the Super Regionals, losing a 13-inning heartbreaker to 28

first series against rival FIU. The conference tournament, being held in Hattiesburg, Miss., will run from May 21-25.

Although McCormack faces challenges like replacing several departed senior players and playing in a new conference, expect him to get the most out of his team, and have them competing well after the spring semester ends.

After the team returns to Boca, they’ll remain there for all but two of their 19 remaining regular season matches. The regular season ends on April 12 versus FIU. After the FIU contest, the women’s tennis team will head to Norfolk, Va. for the four-day Conference USA Tennis Championships from April 17-20.
