A YEAR OF RESILIENCE ANNUAL REPORT TO OUR COMMUNIT Y

2 02 0 –2 0 21

GREETINGS, UPREP COMMUNITY The 2020–2021 school year was a year unlike any other in our history, which is the way every school year should be. It was a wild ride as we kept up with the changing protocols of the CDC and the Washington State Department of Health. We put the health and safety and academic success of our students first, while supporting our faculty and staff as they negotiated seven different schedule changes. Yet we were one of the first schools to bring students back to campus, which culminated with all of our students who wanted to return in person on campus this spring. Lastly, the class of 2021 graduated at the Woodland Park Zoo on a gorgeous evening in June. What a year! Even with all the changes, one thing remained the same: the resilience of our UPrep community. We remained committed to our mission to develop each student’s potential to become an intellectually courageous, socially responsible citizen of the world. I am incredibly grateful for all of the support you showed our faculty and staff as they navigated the unknown. Thank you for continuing to volunteer as tour guides, for supporting our athletes, for being Puma Fund volunteers, class reps, and sitting on the Alumni Board, and for continuing to say yes.

“I am incredibly grateful for all of the support you showed our faculty and staff as they navigated the unknown.” We could not have done any of the work we accomplished this year without the UPrep Board of Trustees. This dedicated group of people, led by Board Chair Cheryl Scott, welcomed me to the school and supported me as I navigated our response to the pandemic. Their love for UPrep was evident in the countless hours they spent volunteering and stewarding the resources of our community so the faculty, staff, and administration could support our students. This is a wonderful community and I want to thank all of you for supporting the Puma Fund and UPrep Together this year. We surpassed all our fundraising goals and broke all school records for fundraising. I hope you enjoy reading about all of the ways your generosity made it possible for us to remain committed to our mission. I hope you also enjoy reading about UPrep’s Capital Campaign (pages 6–7). This is an exciting time for the school, and I am looking forward to leading this community throughout the 2021–2022 school year. With much gratitude,

Ronnie Codrington-Cazeau HEAD OF SCHOOL

A RECORD-BREAKING YEAR! BY CATHERI NE BLU N DELL, DIRECTOR OF ADVANCEMEN T

In a year of so much uncertainty, our donors provided much-needed stability. UPrep broke all records for fundraising goals for fiscal year 2021, and it was clear that our families made giving to UPrep a priority by contributing an impressive $1,673,455.

DONATIONS KEEP OUR COMMUNITY SAFE AND STUDENTS LEARNING Your financial support helped to provide: •

White boards and markers for every

student and more than 650 lab kits for at-home science experiments •

More than 3,400 hours of professional faculty

development focused on remote learning •

A thermal scanner to read body temperature

at our main entrance •

New cameras, microphones, and monitors

in every classroom •

Plexiglas shields, additional sinks for

handwashing stations, thermometers, and signage encouraging social distancing •

Weekly COVID-19 testing for all UPrep

faculty, staff, and students

Our parents and guardians, grandparents, faculty, staff, and alumni came together to raise $956,632 for the Puma Fund, surpassing our goal by 24 percent. With a parent/guardian participation rate of 86 percent, we knew our families were grateful for the many efforts UPrep made to keep students learning despite unusual circumstances. During one special evening, our virtual UPrep Together event raised $716,823 for the Endowed Financial Aid Fund. This fund ensures that all of our students can access the full range of educational experiences UPrep has to offer, regardless of their ability to pay. We want to thank all 701 of our amazing donors, whose names are proudly listed at the end of this report. Your generosity is felt on campus and beyond!

Endowment The UPrep endowment allows UPrep to adapt to the ever-changing needs of our students while maintaining a reliable, ongoing stream of income. Our endowment is made up of 26 separate funds and, as of June 30, 2021, the combined balance was $14,271,791. Together, these endowed funds provided more than $520,000 last year, most of which directly supported financial aid, and professional development for faculty and staff. We are so grateful for the incredible generosity of our community. We invite you to learn more about our endowment and its funds by visiting www.universityprep.org/endowment.

A BOLD AND HISTORIC COMMITMENT TO THE FUTURE As we close our 45th school year, the Board of Trustees is looking ahead to realize one major component of our 2015–2020 Strategic Plan: constructing the ULab, a 39,000-square-foot, three-story building across the street from our campus. This building will serve as an entrepreneurial learning laboratory and allow our Upper School enrollment to grow by nearly 40 percent. We are deeply grateful to the 67 visionary donors who have stepped forward with early stretch commitments totaling $13,142,000—more than half of our $25 million campaign goal.* Over the course of the next two years, we will invite all UPrep families to join us in this ambitious effort to transform our learning spaces and support the student experiences, collaboration, and personalized learning that will best prepare our students for life beyond UPrep.
