I have been a participant of the Shield of HE.R.S Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander group since 2017. I strongly encourage all our Indigenous women in our community to attend, you will not be disappointed. We do so much and there is never a dull moment. We have different age groups that attend the women’s group. I find the different conversations help me a lot as I hear different women’s perspective on life and issues and it’s amazing. It is so much better than going to a counselling session. Having the open yarns, that are culturally appropriate helps me to open up and yarn freely.

The activities are so much fun and helpful, especially about self awareness. We laugh a lot and enjoy the bonding time. We are always reminded that we are ‘Strong, Deadly Black women’. This group is something that I look forward to attending every week.

Everyone looks up to Topsy, she is helpful and caring and connects each and every one of us. She comes with a lot of cultural knowledge and builds on our confidence. The ‘worry’ Activity is so powerful, as it has definitely worked for me. During this activity we write down the worries that we have no control over and throw it away into our worry box. This really helps. We as indigenous women take on so much from our families and extended families, but the reality is we only have control of our own lives and feelings, if we don’t have the control to change it why worry.

Dear Residents,

You would be well aware by now of the significant road works being undertaken in the Upper Ross, with the Townsville Ring Road Stage 5 (TRR5) and Allambie Lane upgrade.

Works on Allambie Lane, involve widening the road, installation of a hard medium, installing dedicated turning lanes and a raised crossing. This project will increase safety for both road users and pedestrians in the area and is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

The Townsville Ring Road Stage 5 (TRR5) project has come to the point of upgrading the on/off ramps onto Riverway Drive with the addition of on/off ramps at Beck Drive.

Changing the ramps of the existing Riverway Drive interchange is to ensure its safe operation with the new Beck Drive interchange and the newly duplicated Ring Road carriageway. If all ramps were to remain in place, dangerous traffic conditions including “weaving” by motorists would occur, significantly increasing the risk of traffic crashes.

At Riverway Drive, the southbound entry ramp (currently under reconfiguration works) and northbound exit ramp will remain in place. These ramps carry the highest volumes of traffic and cater for vehicles travelling between the Upper Ross and major employment centres such as the Townsville University Hospital, James Cook University and Lavarack Barracks.

The ramps being removed the northbound entry ramp and southbound exit ramp at Riverway Drive cater for vehicles heading to and from the north and towards Hervey Range Developmental Road. These ramps currently carry the lowest volumes of traffic. This traffic will be catered for at the new Beck Drive interchange.

At Beck Drive, two new entry ramps and two new exit ramps will provide connections for all directions of travel and deliver improved access between the Upper Ross and the Townsville Ring Road.

The new Beck Drive interchange is a key component of the TRR5 project, providing a second access point to the Ring Road and ensuring the road network caters to future traffic and population growth in the Upper Ross area. Traffic modelling undertaken by TMR has shown that the surrounding road network can suitably cater to changes in traffic volumes and patterns following completion of the TRR5 project.

To stay updated on the TRR5 project, I recommend visiting the TMR Webpage: www.tmr.qld.gov.au/ projects/townsville-ring-road-stage-5 and/or to subscribe to receive electronic updates via email townsvilleringroad5@tmr.qld.gov.au

Kind regards

Aaron
