Our new centre is now open and it’s all hands on deck. All of our existing programs and services are running full steam ahead.

The Community Centre is a wonderful facility, offering a range of programs and services. Staff at the centre are keen to hear ideas, suggestions and thoughts from community members about new programs/services that we may be able to facilitate to benefit the local community. Please come and visit us at the new Upper Ross Community Centre, have a coffee and a chat and share your thoughts The ‘HIPPY’ mob (pictured above) took time out of their busy schedules to pose for this wonderful welcome photo. HIPPY is an in-home tutoring program that provides FREE tutoring and FREE educational resources to parents and carers to assist them in being their child’s first teacher. See page 8 for more info

Staff at the new service centre are now available to assist with vehicle registration and driver licencing. Practical Driver Tests are not available at Cannon Park.

VOLUNTEER PROFILE: Ted Belkmeer - Seniors Kiosk Tutor Ted has been a volunteer at the Upper Ross Community Centre for over 3 years. Ted spent 20 years in the RAAF as an Avionics Technician, working on aircraft electronics equipment. He then worked at Thuringowa State High School in the Science Department and school IT. Ted now tutors our seniors computers computer lessons. Whether your starting with the basics or require a bit more in depth knowledge Ted can help.

Having just completed a training course in Microsoft Powerpoint Ted is keen to teach others about how to use Microsoft Powerpoint and some of the clever things that you can do with this program. If you are interested in learning how to use Powerpoint contact our centre. Classes are limited to 5 people so bookings are essential.

Townsville Regional community Visitors Scheme Do you have any spare time and would like to visit the elderly in our local nursing homes.

The Community Visitors Scheme is a national program funded by the Australian Government.

The CVS aims to enrich the quality of life of residents of aged care homes who are socially isolated or lonely, and would benefit from a friendly visitor.

As a community visitor, you need to be committed to visiting your resident friend at least once a fortnight. And become a special friend to them. You can enjoy walks, reading the news, joining in the homes activities or even go out on an outing.

HIPPY UPDATE At our recent HIPPY Parent Group Meeting our HIPPY families enjoyed their first visit to our new centre, soaking up the fresh landscaping and our brand new Playground.

Our special Guest S p e a k e r, R i c k Phineasa, Lifestyle Manager from Dreamtime Training, brought an extra touch with his inspirational words and excited enthusiasm. A powerful quote that Rick has displayed on his office wall says it all. 'Knowledge is Power, Community is Strength, Positive Attitude is Everything.'

Dreamtime Training is a community driven organisation which works closely with indigenous community groups. Through their unique approach to training they are able to cater for, support and service the needs of anyone who wishes to learn.
