Dear residents of the Upper Ross.

I am hoping you have all had a good Easter and are keeping well.

As your local MP, I wanted to briefly update you on the roadworks on Beck Road – Ring Road Stage 5 and Riverway Drive Stage 2. Firstly, thank you for your patience and understanding as works progress on Beck Road. New ramps are being constructed to improve connectivity to the Ring Road. I am informed that access will be available mid-May, with some delays given the recent wet weather and other engineering challenges. This should alleviate the congestion we are all experiencing on Riverway Drive at peak travel times.

Riverway Drive Stage 2 is fully funded. However major works cannot commence until the 2nd pipeline (which is out for tender by Townsville City Council) is constructed on the other side of the River, I therefore expect construction will start on Riverway Drive mid next 2023. All residents should be aware that the risk of water main rupture remains high should compaction work occur on Riverway Drive Stage 2. Given the existing and ageing water main under Riverway Drive which supplies 70% of water to Townsville, the risk is enormous. Hence the need to progress the replacement pipeline well away from the road and urban encroachment from the Ross Dam down to the Douglas Water treatment plant.

My 2020 election commitment was to deliver Riverway Drive Stage 2 in this term of Government, and I remain confident this will still be achieved.

I again thank you for your understanding of the complexities and challenges that surround Stage 2, we will get there.
