Queen's Baton Relay The 2018 Commonwealth Games Queen's Baton Relay is coming to Townsville on Sunday 18 and Monday 19 March 2018, presenting a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for local residents to be a part of the Baton's epic global journey.

The route for the Queen's Baton Relay (QBR) was chosen by the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games Corporation (GOLDOC) and will be supervised by the Queensland Police Service (QPS).

The Relay involves around 27km of rolling temporary road closures and event clearways over two days as our 150 local baton bearers move through Townsville.

We are encouraging the Townsville community to help create a wonderful spectacle and cheer on our local participants. Community members will have an unprecedented opportunity to watch this event within the road closure zone installed by QPS. Please Note: Due to temporary road closure your journey to work or school on the morning of Monday 19 March may be affected and you may need to make alternative arrangements.

Baton Bearers Meet the local legends who will share the dream and carry the Queens Baton with pride. Nominated by their peers for achievements and contributions to their community, these baton bearers represent the spirit of the Commonwealth games and inspire others to be great.

My name is Kirsty Purcell, I'm a proud Bindal woman and a mother of 3 beautiful children. I was born in Gympie and grew up in Cherbourg, south east Queensland.I was given a great opportunity in September 2017 when I was employed by Community Gro as the Community Connect Support Worker. I work alongside Topsy Tapim the Community connect worker who continues to mentor me and enables me to learn new skills. During my time here I have increased my knowledge of the services in Townsville and surrounding areas and have developed great networks in our community. Through this role and under Topsy's supervision I have increased my skills and my confidence. The main focus of the Community Connect program is to provide information, advice and refer clients to the right services in our Community.

I truly love working in this capacity and most of all with the great team at the Upper Ross Community Centre.

NEWS from Rasmussen Primary School.

HELP WANTED !!

Rasmussen Primary School is looking for volunteers to help with Reading groups for the first hour of the day - 8.309.30am. One lunch break a week come in to work with kids in the garden as the garden is coming to it’s second year and has already harvested corns and watermelons. Come help with breakfast, cooking toast, serving children (this happens every day, but maybe once per week) Playing games with the kids when they sit 8am - 8.20 in our covered area before school. From the old centre to the new centre, we have had the craft group running every Monday morning.

We have had the privilege to have seen many come and many go and have also lost some along the way.

Back in 2013 we had the privilege to celebrate a milestone for Mrs Maud Hammond who turned 100yrs. On the 1st March 2018 sadly Mrs Hammond had sadly passed away.

From all the staff at Upper Ross Community Centre we would like to send our deepest condolences to the Hammond Family.

ARTS & CRAFT GROUP Every Monday morning from 9:30am-12:00pm we have a lovely bunch of ladies that come in and get together and share their wonderful skills in Arts & Craft. If you have nothing to do or would like to learn some handy skills of Arts & Craft come on in and join our lovely group. Come along for some company, have a cuppa, chat, bring your own arts & craft or learn knitting and crochet from our skillful ladies. !!...GOOD NEWS CORNER...!!

GoodStart Donation Students from Goodstart Kelso learnt about the art of giving. The students and their families put on a food drive at the Daycare centre which the students have kindly donated to the Upper Ross Community Centre. The students came to visit the Centre with a huge donation of food for struggling families in the Upper Ross area and were very well received.

The students had the opportunity to personally deliver the food to the Upper Ross Community Centre which they felt very proud of doing.

From all of the staff at Community Gro, thank you very much to all staff and families of the Goodstart Keslo Daycare Centre for your generosity!!

Mayor’s Christmas Appeal The Upper Ross Community Centre would like to give big thanks to the Townsville City Council for the Support of the Mayors Christmas Appeal which this year alone has help us to support over 60 families in the Upper Ross area over the 2017 Christmas break.

Back to School Drive The Upper Ross Community Centre would like to extent its biggest gratitude to the whole of Townsville community, Businesses and Organisations for all the support and donations in the Back to School Drive. We had a huge response to this and was able to help many families with getting their kids back to school. The drive is ongoing so the support is still needed by us and many families that will need support.

Big increase in volunteers for the Youth Drop-in We received more than 40 enquiries to volunteer at our Monday night Youth Drop-in. And to date we have completed 25 screening applications and commenced 20 volunteers. This awesome result is thanks to the Channel 7 broadcast on 5th February 2018 and the great work of Journalist, Lauren Cooney.

Because of the number of volunteers we are working on a roster to share the load as well as provide increased adult supervision and greater interaction with the young people. It is exciting to see the start of some mentoring type relationships.If you are keen to get involved in this rewarding opportunity to work with the vital, wonderful young people in our communityplease contact the community centre on 4774 0144.

This year Queensland Women's Week celebrations will be held from 3 to 11 March with the theme 'Celebrate wellbeing. Everybody wins'. These events and activities offer opportunities for Queenslanders of all ages and backgrounds to join together in celebration. The theme aims to encourage women and girls to celebrate their wellbeing which benefits not only individual women and girls, but the whole community. A state-wide events calendar is available on the 'Queensland Womens Week campaign website.

The Buy Smart Competition is now open for 2018. The annual Buy Smart Competition is designed to help young people learn about consumer issues. Young people are a big part of the marketplace and they can face serious risks as consumers, both right now and as they become adults. The Buy Smart competition aims to educate young people to help them become financially literate, avoid scams and learn their consumer rights.
