The JDRF Walk for a Cure is heading to Townsville in August. The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) is the world's largest charitable supporter of type 1 diabetes research. Throughout all local and international activities JDRF's mission remains constant - to find a cure for type 1 diabetes and its complications through the support of research. Type 1 diabetes is a life-long autoimmune disease that usually occurs in childhood but can be diagnosed at any age. Type 1 diabetes affects over 122,300 people in Australia alone. It is an auto-immune disease, in which the immune system destroys the pancreatic cells that produce insulin. Without insulin, the body literally starves as it cannot process food. The goal of Type 1 diabetes management is to keep blood glucose levels as close to the normal range as possible. It sounds easy, but in reality, this is very difficult to achieve. To stay alive, people with type 1 diabetes must have a constant supply of insulin through injections or an insulin pump and they test their blood sugar by pricking their fingers at least four times a day. People with type 1 diabetes must be constantly prepared for potential hypoglycaemic (low blood sugar) and hyperglycaemic (high blood sugar) reactions, which can both be life threatening.

What is the HIPPY Program? Hi from Wendy

What is HIPPY?

Home Interaction Program for Parents & Youngsters

HIPPY is a free two-year home-based early childhood enrichment program. HIPPY builds the confidence and skills of parents and carers to create a positive learning environment to prepare their child for school. HIPPY is delivered through a mix of home visits and parent groups. HIPPY Upper Ross is open to families who live in Condon, Rassmussen and Kelso. How old does my child need to be to start HIPPY? Children join HIPPY in the year before they start formal schooling (child must turn 4 by 30th June 2014).

How will HIPPY help me and my child? HIPPY helps parents/carers learn many things including: µ how to be more involved in their child's learning µ understanding more about child development and the way children learn µ encouraging a love of learning in children.

HIPPY helps children by: µ µ µ

preparing them for a confident start to school building their self-esteem and confidence in learning providing opportunities to enjoy time with their parents.

JOKE TIME A man goes skydiving. After a fantastic free fall he pulls the rip cord to open his parachute but nothing happens. He tries everything but can't get it open. Just then another man flies by him, going UP. The skydiver yells, "Hey, you know anything about parachutes? The man replies, "No, you know anything about gas stoves? www.nqcs.org.au/bits-n-pieces-newsletter

Making our kids safer and smarter Some of you will have seen the flashing lights being rolled out in school zones across the city. We have already managed to get lights installed at Weir, Kirwan and the Willows State Schools. The next round of funding is opening and I will be fighting to get a set of these lights installed on Allambie Lane outside the Good Shepherd Catholic Community School and Rasmussen State School. The flashing lights remind drivers to take extra care around schools. With two primary schools, plus the PCYC and child care centre in the area it is important that we look after our kids on the roads and make the area as safe as possible. The flashing lights program is a $10 million commitment by this government over 4 years. It is just one of the programs we are pushing to improve the safety and skills of our children. Schools in the Thuringowa area have already received over $2 million to address the maintenance backlog. We are also investing in improving literacy and numeracy outcomes for our children through programs like the Great Results Guarantee, which gives schools the chance to target what programs and resources they need. Recently the State Government also announced further funding for Prep Teacher Aide hours, with schools in the Townsville region set to benefit from a quarter of the state-wide funding.

Please phone my office on 4773 3116, email me directly at thuringowa@parliament.qld.gov.au or find me on Facebook at www.facebook.com/SamCox.Inp
