Our annual Community Family Fun Day was held on Saturday June 2 2018. The event is a day for families to come together and enjoy the free rides, entertainment, food, cultural dancing and information stalls. Last years event, which combined our event with Mabo Day celebrations was a huge event however feedback from people attending this year's event said this years event was as good, if not better. As a big thank you to the community for the amazing positive feedback, it inspires us to make sure each year, we strive to provide a community event that meets the needs of our families and community, both in the Upper Ross and the greater Townsville region. Community Gro would like to give thanks to all of our generous sponsors for their kind donations– Riverstone Development, Sk8way, Wax It Willows, Leonards Willows, Launch Zone, Kelso Fish Bar, Lowes Menswear Willows, Harris Scarfe, Franks Provost Hair Willows and Chipmunks Playground. Biggest Morning Tea On Friday the 22nd of June, the Upper Ross Community Centre held their annual Biggest Morning Tea at the Upper Ross Community Centre. The morning was a big hit with all who attended. Everyone enjoyed participating in fun games, raffles, lucky door prizes, and a silent auction for a signed Cowboy's football. We would like to say a big thank you to everyone who attended and helped us raise much needed funds for a very special cause. $310 was raised on the day and donated to the Cancer Council. Community Gro appreciate all staff, community members, volunteers and businesses who donated food and gifts for the event. I am sure all our lucky winners appreciated our prizes.

State Budget Highlight Having delivered the funding required for Riverway Drive Stage 1, I'm excited to announce $36M in funding for another major project, the final stage of the Townsville Ring Road which runs through the heart of Thuringowa. Importantly this will include a new interconnection from Beck Drive, providing connectivity to places like the Townsville Hospital, JCU and Lavarack Barracks. $36M is our State funding contribution for this major infrastructure project that will deliver local jobs. I am working closely with Federal Member for Herbert Cathy O'Toole MP to get the federal funding contribution. This budget also announces significant funding for our schools, roads and our community such as $4.25M to fully fund the Charles Moroney Park Upgrade which will deliver a modern Sports and Recreation area which will benefit the entire Upper Ross Community. I am working closely with Cr Mark Molachino to enable the best suited facility for the community. Collaboration between all levels of Government will deliver these major jobs generating projects. The State Government is focussed on delivering secure, long-term jobs in regional Queensland and we are building on our plan to deliver projects in our community, and the quality services that all residents deserve. We've invested in job creating projects and programs across Queensland like Skilling Queenslanders for Work and the Apprentice Payroll Rebate. Here in Townsville that means $841M for infrastructure in Townsville, estimated to support 2900 local jobs and a record $983M for the Townsville Hospital and Health Service to keep North Queenslanders healthy. For many people on low incomes, paying for essential goods and services is a struggle, and the effects of going without can be huge. Without a fridge you can't store fresh food, without a computer kids can be left behind at school, and if you can't afford the pre-apprenticeship course, education can stall before it even begins. The No Interest Loan Scheme offers people on low incomes safe, fair and affordable loans for white goods, household furniture, education, medical expenses and car registration and servicing.
Loans up to $1,500 are available from the Upper Ross Community Centre and the Garbutt Community Centre. To be eligible for NILS you must have a healthcare or pension card, earn under $45,000, have lived in your current residence for three months, and have a willingness and capacity to repay the loan. There are no credit checks. NILS is a leading example of Circular Community Credit. NILS reflects Good Shepherd Microfinance's focus on improving opportunities for low income earners. Research shows that four out of five NILS clients are moving away from crisis and hardship towards stability and resilience – achieving economic mobility. In addition, four out of five clients who have used payday lenders in the past have stopped using them since accessing NILS. I have just completed a traineeship in Business Administration through ACCESS Training at Community Gro - The Upper Ross Community Centre and I am looking forward to spreading my wings out in the Administration world. I have learnt a lot whilst working at the Centre and worked amongst wonderful people.
