No Interest Loan Scheme (NILS) Provides individuals and families on low income with access to safe, fair and affordable credit. NO Fees; NO Charges; NO Interest.

What are the loans for? Household items like fridges, freezers, washing machines, stoves, clothes dryers and some furniture; Some medical and dental services; Educational essentials such as computers and text books; Some other items as requested.

How does NILS work? As the diagram on the right shows, there is an application process. Successful applicants then make repayments which go back into the bank, making funds available for others in the community to borrow.

Bob wants everything to be perfect for his anniversary trip to the hotel where he and his wife honeymooned 30 yrs earlier. So he gets there a day early to make all the arrangements. That night he emails her, but misspells the address and it goes to a recent widow. The next day the widow’s son finds his mother passed out in front of her computer. On the screen is the email: “My darling wife, I’ve just gotten here and everything’s set for your arrival tomorrow. I hope your trip down here will be as pleasant as mine. P.S. It’s really hot!”

Opportunities ahead for 2014 I hope everyone has got over the Christmas and New Year break. I enjoyed some time with the family and am now looking forward to the great opportunities 2014 brings. For some it means going back to school or doing other study and training to be better equipped in the workforce. For the Upper Ross Community Centre it means a new home. Plans are on track for the new Community Hub where the Community Centre will join with Upper Ross PCYC and the Men’s Shed, opening up many more opportunities for the residents of the Upper Ross. Big thanks go to the Board of NQ Community Services Inc and to Susan Perry for their ongoing efforts in the co-location process. I’ve said before that the Upper Ross has some great natural attractions, with Ross River, the Pinnacles and the bush in the west. Last month I raised publicly the possibility of opening up the Ross River Dam to other recreational activities such as kayaking, fishing and restricted motor boats. This isn’t about building new facilities, it’s about inviting individuals and community groups to have their say about what activities they might like to see on the Dam. Contact the Townsville City Council and give your feedback on opening up Ross River Dam so more people can enjoy the outdoors. As part of the State Government and a resident of Thuringowa, I see it as my role to make Townsville a great place to work, rest and play.
