2017 Community Expo one of the best ever Feedback from people attending this years Community Expo was that it was a great family day out and the event was one of our best ever Expo’s.

We would like to give big thank you to Keriba-Mina Zenadh Indigenous Corporation who partnered with NQ Community Services to put on such a great community event. The traditional activities and games were a hit with all ages and it was great to see everyone coming together to participate and enjoying themselves.

The cultural ‘Island Night’ held on the Saturday night at PCYC was a great night with several hundred people attending.

Everyone attending were treated to a night traditional food, song and dance.

A big thank you also to the fantastic business who donated prizes for the days giveways: Billabong Sanctuary, Bunnings Northshore, Cheesecake Shop (Kirwan), Gelatissimo, Harvey Norman, Harold’s Seafood, Hogs Breath (Cannon Park) Joyce Mayne, Kirwan Ten Pin Bowling, Kmart (Cranbrook), Redback Archery, Riverway Pharmacy, Ross Hair Studio, Sandwich Express, Townsville Mini Golf, and Woolworths (Rasmussen).

Enjoy a day tour of the Palm islands, see stunning scenery along 5:45pm way and glimpse humpback whales. Get to know the locals and learn about the islands stories from local guides. Have a go at traditional painting or weaving with experienced artists.

Community Garden Update If you attended our recent Community Expo you may have noticed the Torres Strait Islander Community cooking a Kup-Murri in the Community Garden. Kup-Murri is a traditional method of cooking, using a hole dug in the ground. A large fire is lit in the pit and allowed to burn down. Large stones are then laid over the hot coals and palm leaves or paperbark are used to line the heated pit. The meats and vegetables are wrapped and placed in the pit and covered with leaves and dirt. About 5-6 hours later the food is removed and eaten at traditional feastings.

After the EXPO the pit was filled in however we decided that the pit should be re-dug and made available for community use. A big thank you to the youth from Community Justice who re-dug and fenced the pit. If you would like to use the pit please contact the Community Centre.

Tax Time - do you need help lodging your tax return?

The Tax Help program is a network of ATO trained and accredited community volunteers who provide a FREE confidential service to help people complete their tax returns online using myTax. Tax Help runs from mid July through to the end of October.

Volunteers can help you lodge your return or claim a refund for franking credits, or help you complete a non-logdement advice if you do not need to lodge a tax return. They cannot help with amendments of previous years returns however they can assist with the lodgement of previous years tax returns.

Are you Eligible for Tax Help?

You are eligible for Tax Help if your income is $50,000 or less and you did not: * work as a contractor * run a business (including sole trader) * own a rental property * have partnership or trust matters * sell shares or an investment * have a capital gain * receive royalties * receive income from a trust other than managed funds * receive foreign income, other than a foreign pension or annuity Tax Help appointments are available at the Upper Ross Community Centre. Play. Share. Connect. Grow Our Playgroup is an informal session where mums, dads, grandparents, carers, children and babies come together in a relaxed, safe and supportive environment. Playgroup is a great place for children to learn through fun, educational and interactive activites such as outdoor and free play, art, craft and imaginative play. No child is too young for playgroup - children from 0 - 5 years of age (yes babies) all love new experiences and benefit from developing sensory, social and communication skills through playgroup activities. No need to book just come along and join in our Playgroup. We provide a healthy morning tea to mums, dads, grandparents, carers, and children.

Cost: Gold Coin Donation. We also provide FREE pick-up and drop-off transport (transport bookings essential).

Funky Frames Workshop During the Jun-July school holidays we held a number of fun children’s craft workshops at the Community Centre. The Funky Frames session was a hit with both parents and kids. Like our facebook page to keep up to date with what fun after school activities we have planned each week and also to see whats on during the school holidays.

Our families having lots of fun making awesome funky frames from old toys. They really let their imagination and creativity loose and created some beautiful frames.

Who Should Come and see the Reparation Officer?

If you answer YES to one of the points below then you should make an appointment to come in and see Marika Akee-Masina about the current Reparations Scheme or call 0457541454 to book an appointment. Ÿ You received a reparations payment in the first round of the Indigenous Wages Savings Reparations (IWSR) process. Ÿ You did NOT apply in the first round of the IWSR process but want to be considered in this round Ÿ You are a NEW applicant (you were born between 1957 and 1959) Ÿ You wish to inquire about reparations for someone that was paid in the first round but is now deceased. Ÿ You are assisting a family member to either complete a form or find out more about the current reparations process.

All persons attending on the day should bring any supporting documentation that can prove their date of birth such as a driver’s licence, birth certificate, health care card or pension card or ID as well as any bank account details (ie. bank statement or confirmation letter from Centrelink) to prove that you are the account holder.
