Cooper Landing Gem- March 2023

Page 1

Dear Members,

Love that sunshine and longer days. Keep a look out this month for those pesky leprechauns, as this is their month to celebrate.

The Upper Kenai River Guide is at print and we should be receiving the great looking 2023 edition this month. It is posted online through our web page if you want to preview it before the print copy is out.

Our attention is now turning to the Regatta. We will be sending out information for boats to register, and sponsors for boats. If you have any suggestions on how to improve our event, want to help working with the race or any other part of the event, please let one of us on the board know. We are working to have entering your boat and sponsoring a boat online as an option again this year.

This month the activity level in the Landing should start to ramp up. There is road construction starting already between here and Seward, spring break for schools is the middle of the month, and with snow and sun, outdoor activities will be in full swing.

Enjoy these hopefully ending days of winter and look forward to spring.

Thank you,

Second Place Winners in the 5/6 District Competition!

February was an exciting month at Cooper Landing School! The annual Battle of the Book competition took place in the beginning of the month. We had three teams competing this year in the 3/4, 5/6, and Middle School categories. This highly competitive academic competition requires teams to read ten to twelve chapter books by a variety of authors. Our students worked hard to read and memorize details about the books for several months. The 5/6 scored high enough to enter the district finals where they placed in second place.

High School students worked hard writing essays for the 2023 George S. And Stella M. Knight Essay contest. Stela’s essay “The Importance of The Constitution” was selected as Alaska’s third place winner!

Congratulations to Molly, Kaia, and Stela! Job well done! We are all very proud of you!

Cooper Landing Community Club

Spring is around the corner and there is a lot of activity going on with the Community Club! Mark your calendar for our next meeting Thursday, March 23rd, at 6 pm at the Hall. Submissions for being on the agenda are due no later than March 13th. Please join us in person or via Zoom.

Along with Community School’s sponsored weekly Yoga sessions with Dusty and the Cooper Landing Cookie Lady’s decorating class we have two new activities scheduled thanks to our new Social Committee Coordinator, Rick Odgers. This month you can now enjoy a game night and a movie night at the hall. And our Tea Social is back! For more information, visit our calendar for the dates and times for these events. And be sure to note some of our local community liaison organizations are on there too for their monthly scheduled and special meetings.

After our last meeting in January the CLCC Board experienced some changes. President Martha Story and Treasurer Jaimie Gonzalez elected to not renew their seats. We would like to take this opportunity to thank them for their time and years of dedication to the Community Club. Their hard work and efforts have greatly been appreciated! When you see them out and about, please be sure to thank them for their contribution to our community! Because of those vacancies, we were able to welcome two new members to the board, Lorriane Temple and Ruth Nelson. We are excited to have them come aboard with their wealth of experiences and local knowledge.

Looking forward to seeing everyone at our next meeting!

• Yvette Galbraith, President

• Melissa, Vice President

• Lorraine Temple, Treasurer

• Ruth Nelson, Secretary

• Ed Holsten, Member
