Greetings,

Those leaves are showing the hint of yellow and fall is in the air. The season is winding down, and it is with great hope that it was bountiful for all our members.

We will be back having regular meetings this month. We will be sending out membership renewals and working on the Upper Kenai River Guide. We really would appreciate members wintering here to consider joining the board of directors for the Chamber. Your innovative ideas, and fresh outlooks would be deeply appreciated.

This is the last month for our Summer Raffle, check out the information on the following pages to learn more about how to enter and the awesome prizes you can win!

A thank you to all our members in advance for your continued support of the Cooper Landing Chamber of Commerce &Visitors Bureau.

Cooper Landing Historical Society and Museum

Hello CLHS Board members, docents, and all interested in the Cooper Landing Historical Society and Museum:

You all know about this 2023 Summer Raffle sponsored by Cooper Landing Chamber of Commerce to benefit the Cooper Landing Youth Group Progam. Kristine (Krissy )Route and the Youth Group started selling raffle tickets earlier this summer during their docent days at the Cooper Landing Museum. Having Kristine and the kids at the museum on Wednesdays was a blast!

We are proud to have the 2023 Summer Raffle drawings at our next CLHS Board Meeting at the museum on Saturday, September 23 at 2 pm! Our Board meeting will begin at 1 pm with a synopsis of summer activity, discussion of plans for our annual December Christmas Open House, and plans for covering the CAT.

This will be an open meeting for all interested persons. Interested in the museum, the historical society, and the winners of the Summer Raffle!

September 4, Labor Day, is the last regular day of the museum season.

Thank You Volunteers

• Thanks to Kate Stevenson for summer Treasure Sales proceeds and for many docent days in the museum during which time she also cleaned the buildings, planted and cared for all the flowers, and kept the Chamber cabin up to snuff!

• Thanks to Dave Westerman and Don Barber for re-roofing the old postoffice and the outhouse— very time intensive and much physical work up on the roof and down on the ground.

• Thanks to Sally Losco, Skye High, Kristine Route and the Cooper Landing Youth Group, and Cathy Leaders for docent days with me.

• Thanks to Kate Stevenson, Chris Nyman, Kristine Route and the Youth Group, and Connie Loveall for the yard work.

• Thanks to Mike Gephardt for turning on the water.

• Thanks to Kristine Route for the interpretive signage.

• Thanks to Keith Freeman for moving the CAT away from Katie Feichtinger’s mural.

• Thanks to Kevin Minto for donations of his art and craft work to sell to benefit the museum.

• Thanks to Cathy Leaders, Tammy and Roy Dudley, and Yvette Galbraith for donations to the museum.

• Thanks, Barb Atkinson, for the minutes from the July 9 meeting.

Much to be thankful for this summer! I am so pleased and so appreciative of the work that’s been down at, in, on, and for the museum! Please let me know if I’ve forgotten to thank someone.

Does anyone know who this little zebra striped case belongs to? This was left in the senior van and so far it is a mystery. Inside is an item of girls clothing.

Lots of excitement was in the air as students returned to school on August 15th. Everyone was happy to see their friends and catch up after the summer. We have a few new faces in our family including our longterm sub, Barb Whiteman. She joined us for the start of term while the search continued for a new K-3 teacher. We are grateful for her hardwork and willingness to jump right in.

As many of you know Tommy Gossard went on to teach at Skyview Middle School. We appreciate all of the time and dedication he put into Cooper Landing School. Although he is missed, we wish him the best on his new adventure.

Back

The older students, 4-8 grade, fell right back in sync with the daily schedule in Ms. Krissy’s room. One fourth grader stated, “The summer was so boring, I couldn’t wait to come back to school.”

A big special thank you to everyone who volunteered to help get the school ready for the new year! There were boxes upon boxes of new material and many items to be moved. A team of helpers spend countless hours helping put things away and clean for the new year.

On a side note, we are still looking for a janitor. Contact us if you are interested in applying!

With school back in session, the pace of our town has mellowed a bit during midweek, but our weekends are still lively with traffic, visitors and fisherman. Our local activities and meetings will be picking back up as our season transgresses into fall.

The Kenai Peninsula Borough Community Assistance Program (CAP) 2023/2024 submissions are due to the Cooper Landing Community Club by September 10th. We ask that our local community organization liaisons to please submit their requested amounts via email to officers@cooperlandingcommunityclub.com. Requests need to include the amount, what the donation will cover, and the contact information for the organization making the request. The CAP funds must be used for a public purpose, and applicants must demonstrate that the project or program is publicly available to every person in the community. We must have these submissions to review and vote on at our September meeting in order to be compliant with the program.

On the calendar this month is StreamWatch (9/10), DOT/Sterling Hwy 9/19, CLES Board Meeting (Firehall, 9/19), and CLCC Community Meeting (9/21). Friday night September 22 marks the return of movie nights at the Community Hall. Keep a lookout for updates on what film will be showing on the library website! On Saturday, September 23rd our beloved Soup Supper is back! Please be sure to attend this year as much needed proceeds go towards CLES.

Also back in the spirit of Firewise is the 5th Annual Wood Pile Contest! This is the reminder to keep busy stacking your piles! Judging will take place on October 8th. If you are interested in participating, please let us know. We also ask that if you have completed Firewise tasks around your house or business this year to please send in any pictures you have. Submissions, signing up and questions can be emailed to officers@cooperlandingcommunityclub.com.

As mentioned our next CLCC meeting is Thursday, September 21st at 6 pm. We ask all of our community liaisons to send a representative to attend and provide an update for our local residents. To be included on the agenda, please submit your requests no later than noon on September 13th. This allows us to include your participation in our public announcements per our bylaws.

The Cooper Landing Community Club (CLCC) and Cooper Landing Emergency Services (CLES) both have seats available on their boards. Please be sure to submit your applications if you are interested in contributing to our community. Submissions for CLCC are due at our September 21st meeting to attend and vote and October 9th for CLES. Watch the Crier and local Facebook social media pages for further information.

Thank you and hope to see you at our next meeting!
