MOVEMENT OF GOD

Prayer Journal

At University Place Presbyterian Church we strive to know, experience and be the love of Jesus locally, intentionally, spontaneously and tangibly. As part of the University Place and Tacoma communities for nearly 100 years, our commitment to loving God and loving others remains a constant during times of change.

PRAYER AND FASTING

Fasting is a time for purifying yourself before God. As you empty yourself of your sinful habits, indulgent appetites, and pleasurable distractions, you will discover more of God’s presence and make room for more of His goodness in your life. This is a time to declare your dependence upon God, not earthly things. Matthew 4:4 “But Jesus told him, “No! The Scriptures say ‘People do not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God” During this week of fasting and prayer, come with great expectations. Fill yourself with faith that God is going to meet you in natural and supernatural ways that could change the direction of your life. Ezra 8:23 “So we fasted and petitioned God about this, and He answered our prayer” What is the ‘this’ for you and your life? We are praying for God to meet you in the middle of it. As we pray and fast, we are believing for God to hear your prayers and respond in great power.

SIMPLE GUIDE FOR DAILY PRAYER READ

Find a space to sit down, be present, and read the scriptures. Read the passages slowly, and consider what God is saying to you. Listen for a word, detail, or special phrase in the passage that stands out to you.

REFLECT

After reading the scriptures, maybe even a few times, sit and reflect. What is God saying to you? What is resonating with you? Take time to consider what these scriptures are speaking directly to you.

RESPOND

After reflecting, What does God want from you? What does God want you to do? How will you respond to what God speaks to your heart from these passages? Take what you were reflecting on and respond in a practical way today, right now.

SUNDAY: THE PRAYER OF EXAMINATION As we start this week of prayer and fasting, this Psalm is our prayer: Psalm 139:23-24 “Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. Point out anything in me that offends you, and lead me along the path of everlasting life” Tonight, as we start this week of prayer and fasting, we are starting with the prayer of examination. That God would not only speak to your heart but test it. That God would reveal any area of your life that needs to be adjusted or corrected. Take some time to pray for the next 7 days to be deeply transformational not just informational. This word and term is a blacksmith term with metal and gold, to “try” something is to test it, purify it, refine it to get out anything impurities of the gold or silver: To make something have integrity, meaning no cracks. This is our prayer: for God to refine us and purify us. This is the perfect time to write down some of the areas you know God is going to speak to this week. On the next page, write down some things you are believing for during this week of prayer and fasting.

One day Moses said to the Lord, “You have been telling me, ‘Take these people up to the Promised Land.’ But you haven’t told me whom you will send with me. You have told me, ‘I know you by name, and I look favorably on you.’ If it is true that you look favorably on me, let me know your ways so I may understand you more fully and continue to enjoy your favor. And remember that this nation is your very own people.” The Lord replied, “I will personally go with you, Moses, and I will give you rest—everything will be fine for you.” Then Moses said, “If you don’t personally go with us, don’t make us leave this place. SATURDAY: THE PRAYER OF PAUL SCRIPTURE:

Ephesians 6:10-17 “A final word: Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on all of God’s armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil. For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places. Therefore, put on every piece of God’s armor so you will be able to resist the enemy in the time of evil. Then after the battle you will still be standing firm. Stand your ground, putting on the belt of truth and the body armor of God’s righteousness. For shoes, put on the peace that comes from the Good News so that you will be fully prepared. In addition to all of these, hold up the shield of faith to stop the fiery arrows of the devil. Put on salvation as your helmet, and take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.”

In a culture of perverse lies, I pray for my mind to be surrounded by your grace and gift of salvation” SWORD OF THE SPIRIT “God I pray I would not attempt to fight these battles on my own. Help me to use your word as my weapon against the enemy. Fill my mouth with your Word that I might fight the good fight of faith.”
