Houghton Lake and Prudenville are located on the largest inland lake in Michigan – Houghton Lake. AuSable River Float the South Branch of the worldfamous AuSable River, world-renowned for canoeing, kayaking and tubing. From Roscommon it flows north and east through the Mason Tract, preserved as a wilderness between Chase Bridge and Smith Bridge. Here the river’s depth ranges from one to four feet; deeper in a few places. A moderate current will carry you steadily downstream.

Hiking Whether hiking, biking, skiing or snowshoeing, the Houghton Lake area has a trail for you. What better opportunity to experience solitude or companionship, recreation or challenge, than to meander down the trails of Roscommon County. LOST TWIN LAKES PATHWAY Seven miles south of Houghton Lake on Reserve Road is a 3.3-mile loop trail through an old growth pine forest. MARL LAKE 106 State Park Drive, Roscommon. Three loop trails, 2, 3.5, or 5.5 miles. South of South Higgins Lake State Park. MARGUERITE GAHAGAN NATURE PRESERVE 209 Maplehurst, Roscommon. Open to the public from dawn to dusk with many peaceful hiking trails among mature pine forest and cedar swamp. One trail is paved and ADA accessible. NORTH HIGGINS LAKE STATE PARK TRAILS 11747 N Higgins Lake Drive, Roscommon, behind the CCC Museum area are three loops through scenic wooded areas. SKINNER PARK 8555 Knapp Road, Houghton Lake has a half mile fitness trail through the pine trees. It is accessible from the Roscommon Township Hall parking lot. RED PINE NATURAL AREA Eight miles north of St. Helen via F-97 & Sunset Road, this is a 1.5 mile loop that can be hiked, biked, and skied. LANSING ROAD Not a marked pathway, but 4 miles of Lansing Road between M-18 and Flint Road is dedicated as a Natural Beauty Road. It contains a large tract of natural white birch (believed to be the largest in Michigan). This large tract of land is traversed by the quietly flowing Cut River.
TISDALE TRIANGLE ½ mile from Roscommon via M-18 and Tisdale Road. 8.5 miles of trails through the forest. It is maintained year-round and groomed for skiing during the winter. Quilts and Birds Cherished family quilts are made with love and handed down through generations. Established in October 2014, the Roscommon County Quilt Block Trail highlights brightly colored quilt blocks scattered throughout the county. Take a self-guided tour to find and see our colorful variety of quilt blocks. Many of the quilt patterns tell stories about family, history and culture.
The only inland birding trail in Michigan, the AuSable Birding Trail highlights remarkable bird habitat throughout the Houghton Lake, Higgins Lake, Saint Helen, and AuSable River area. The birding trail continues north into Crawford County and includes locations to see the Kirtland’s Warbler, eagles, and other inland birds.
