PRELUDE Head of Product Design, Universitas Pelita Harapan Dear readers, What you see here is a compilation of the 2017 product design student final projects. Many of the projects are about giving change to our surroundings. As a result, we proposed the theme “Design for Change,” a vision in which our design ideas can solve people’s problems and bring about change. It is about making products that respond to users’ needs and how to bring art, craft, and technology closer together. In the final project, a student must be able to use design thinking as an approach to innovation, and thus provide us with a more sophisticated understanding of it. The book describes how design thinking is used in the development of a wide range of products, from 3D printing motor body parts to jewelry designs inspired by traditional Nias jewelry. From this book, you can see that UPH’s product design focuses not only on ideas, but also on material and technical experimentation, leading to innovative products. It’s all about the hand, the eye, technique, design thinking, self-discovery, and preservation. Enjoy our process of creativity and discovery. Devanny Gumulya, S.Sn., M.Sc. Aroma exploration is done by mixing essential oils from clove, citronella, lemongrass, cajeput, nutmeg seeds and cananga flowers. They are combined according to procedures based on top note, base note and middle note. The scent is combined and marinated for 24 hours. After that, the aroma experiment was stored in a glass bottle and then respondents assessed the 6 scents. The best aromas are produced from a mixture of 30% lemongrass oil, 50% of cananga oil, 20% citronellaoil and seecond aroma are produced from a mixture of 30% lemongrass oil, 50% cananga oil, 20% cajeput oil.

THE USE OF POTTERY WORKSHOP AS A MEDIUM TO DELIVER GOD’S WORD INDUSTRIAL

Ceramics are items that have been used since time immemorial, including in the days written in

the Bible. Although ceramic items have evolved over time, the essence of the product stays the same. A candle holder or container is still useful as a candle base regardless of the shape that evolved throughout the years. The presence of a product utilized in the past, whether described through parables or real-life experiences, could assist the audience to understand and feel God’s presence when presenting God’s Word. In addition to the clay can be processed and formed so that it is in accordance with the user, the process of how it’s made could be a means to deliver the Word of God. The technique, how-to steps, and even the ceramic material itself can be used to deepen and reflect God in our daily lives.

12

INDUSTRIAL - EIRENE EUKHARISTY C.

“WHY DOES IT HAVE TO BE CLAY?”

Clay could be a symbolization in three ways: through the material which is clay, the process of making clay into ceramic products, and the products themselves. Therefore, a training or workshop as a means of conveying the word of God was conducted. A workshop can cover all three aspects. Participants can really feel and touch the earth, they are involved in the process, and they will get the end result. There are two kinds of workshops held: 1. A finger labyrinth workshop 2. A candle holder workshop Both this workshops have different techniques with different meanings that could be applied into Christians’ spiritual lives. One uses the slab technique and the other uses pinching and coiling technique. One takes the clay out and the other attaches the clay in.

DESIGNING WEBSITE APLICATION AS AN ACADEMIC AND NON-ACADEMIC ASSISTIVE TOOL FOR STUDENTS WITH AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER LEVEL 1 INDUSTRIAL

17

INDUSTRIAL - KRISTIAN HARIJADI

“WHAT IS THE PROBLEM?” As a result of the pandemic, all aspects of life changed, one of which was education. All learning activities become online, and this change occurs significantly. As a result of this significant change, it must cause problems and obstacles, in this case the percentage will be higher in students with disabilities, especially Autism Spectrum Disorder. In addition, people with disabilities in developed countries are still struggling to get a job, what about developed countries. So this research focuses on ASD students because the course level is the final preparation of students before entering the world of work. 18

The designer interviewed several students from several universities in Indonesia to find out about their experiences to the problems they faced while running online lectures. In addition to interviewing students, the designer also conducts interviews to escorts and teachers who usually accompany ASD students. As a result they have diverse learning difficulties, they are difficult to understand abstract things, have a high learning spirit and are uncomfortable with the changes in the learning system that is becoming online. This design aims to innovate in the development of assistive technology in the form of nonphysical facilities for ASD students, improve the learning experience of students with special needs, especially for ASD students, and establish a culture of equality and non discriminatory that learning is everyone’s right regardless of any circumstances. INDUSTRIAL - KRISTIAN HARIJADI

“WHAT IS THE SOLUTION?” In this online era, more learning tools are needed that can be accessed easily so that the designer decides to create an application website. To cover academic and non-academic aspects, this application website is divided into 3 main menus, there are Study, Buddy, and Community menus. The study menu includes academic aspects, buddy includes academic and non-academic aspects, and community includes non-academic aspects.

Final design has entered 2 stages of user review to some ASD students and teachers. By involving the user at the design stage to the final design is expected to make the application website more comfortable to use by the user. For this stage of design has also followed the guidelines in making designs for disabilities, especially for ASD such as not using many colors, not using animations, not using striking background colors and others. In this final design also, for the details of the website complement has also been added such as the addition of breadcrumbs, complementary icons to supporting illustrations.

of learning that suits the learning style and capacity of the student, knowing that the student has special needs, the teacher should be able to provide suitable teaching methods to the student so that students are easier to understand the materials taught. In addition, teachers do not have other views on the student, and so that students with special needs can become good quality graduates. By making students with special needs a good graduation, in the future they can compete with other graduates in order to reduce unemployment in people with special needs.

From the research that has been done, the authors concluded that special education for students with special needs, especially autism spectrum disorder is needed at a university. It is also important for universities to check with each student to detect students with special needs. This checking process tends to be important so that students with special needs get the quality 21

Motorcycles are a very popular vehicle in the current era, because it can support high mobility. This vehicle is not only used as a transportation but also supports the lifestyle of users. This is

“WHAT IS THE PROBLEM?”

characterized by the large number of motorcycle body customization workshops, one of which is in Indonesia. But motorcycle body customization workshops in Indonesia are still done manually, so sometimes it takes a long duration of manufacture time with quality results that are not yet guaranteed. Therefore, with the presence of 3D printing technology and CAD modelling, it is expected to answer the problem. However, new problems arise related to the limitations of the printing dimensions of 3D printing machines available in Indonesia.

24

INDUSTRIAL - M. FACHRUR ROZI

“WHAT IS THE SOLUTION?”

25

Based on the problem, the proposed solution is through the design of CAD-based, which is modular motorcycle bodies produced by using 3D printing machines. In relation to these solutions, at the design process stage, the author provides several sketch ideas, from sketch number one to alternative sketch number four. For the final design after going through the dicussion stage, assistance, accompanied by the results of a market survey related to the desired module form is an alternative design sketch number four. This design is inspired by the sturdy structure of the bridge. Then, the element of the hole given aims to give a more aggressive and unique impression by showing the inner structure of the motorcycle. In addition, another goal is to improve efficiency related to printing time and material quantity efficiency. This design consists of three module classifications, namely patterned module, adapter module, and supporter module. INDUSTRIAL - M. FACHRUR ROZI

month. This is expected to be a solution, which based on the author’s interview with the workshop, to produce a complete set of motorcycle bodies takes three months. However, there are unresolved issues related to the relatively large number of lock points and fully untested durability. Therefore, more in-depth research is needed so that motorcycle body products produced through this system can be used regularly, so that 3D printing technology is no longer only used as a prototype.

“WHAT IS THE PROBLEM?”

Design process In doing work from home, workers often forget the importance of stretching while working. Especially during the covid-19 pandemic, where most of the time work is done in the house. Therefore, there needs to be a facility that can help workers to stay active in between their working hours. This design is done to meet the needs of WFH workers who have limited time and space when they want to stretch in their spare time during working hours. This design will focus on making a working chair that has 2 functions, namely functions to support comfort while working, and functions to facilitate stretching activities. The design of this chair is also inspired by the practice of yoga chair exercise that uses chairs as a media to perform movements - stretching and yoga movements. The author hopes that this design can help stretching activities be more accessible and done by workers at home.

30

INDUSTRIAL - PRAYOGO JATIADI

“WHAT IS THE SOLUTION” The product developed is a combination of yoga chairs and work chairs. Where the two functions can complement each other and answer health problems that occur in workers during WFH. The designed seats have many features that can help users do stretching and yoga exercises, but also remain comfortable to work for a long period of time. Seats are designed with comfort and health factors in mind. In this design, the author also focused on giving new ideas to make chair based exercise / yoga chair exercise more accessible and also more practical to do. This chair design can be used both for beginners who are just starting out and familiar with chair based exercise and for users who are experienced in doing this type of exercise. 31

After going through the process of data retrieval, observation, and other design processes, the author then created a product in the form of a work chair that can be used to help perform stretching and yoga movements. The design of the chair is made to follow the needs of yoga chair exercise and can help novice users and users who are experienced in practicing yoga chair exercise. In addition, the chair is also designed with ergonomic aspects in place, so that users can sit comfortably when using the chair for work. Most of the frames on this chair can be utilized to aid stretching and yoga movements. All movements from chair based exercise / yoga chair exercise, from movements for beginners to the most difficult can be done more comfortably and easily using this chair. ‘Yogo Chair’ is a piece of seating furniture that offers features that make stretching and yoga exercise more accessible and thus stimulates healthy human - seat interaction. 33

cause a risk of numbness in the genitals and reproductive problems due to pressure on the groin (perineum). 36

INDUSTRIAL - STANLEY SUGANDA

Problems in cycling usually arise due to bad cycling position. This poor sitting position can be due to the cyclist’s posture while cycling or due to the inappropriate placement of the handle bar, saddle and height. Most of these pains are caused by inappropriate saddles. Continuous pressure and friction between the skin and saddles can create hair follicle infections and exfoliation. This pain is usually in the form of numbness and tingling caused by compression of nerves and arteries or wounds. This is due to too much pressure exerted on the nerves and arteries in the groin area resulting in a lack of blood flow, thus inhibiting the delivery of oxygen to the tissues

The bad shape of the saddle causes part of the load to be supported by the groin. This causes more pressure on the nerves and arteries in the groin. Design Process: 1. Interview The inappropriate shape of the saddle can affect the sitting position so that the cyclist feels tired faster. In addition, the quality of saddles is also influenced by the price of the product. The small tire size causes the user to swing more so that the user is tired faster. This tire size is undeniable for portable and compact folding bicycles. But this can be avoided with a comfortable saddle and the correct sitting position as is the case with Brompton saddle users.

37

2. Observation When the bike is folded and new to be used, the author needs to reset the height of each component. However, on the handle bar and saddle pole there is no sign whatsoever that becomes the benchmark for the height of the saddle and handle bar so that each reassemble saddle the author must guess and re-measure the position that suits the body, this activity is quite time consuming until it gets the desired position. 3. Problem Analysis Cycling is becoming a means of sports and transportation today, folding bicycles are most in demand because it is simple, light, and easy to carry anywhere. But unsuitable saddles make cyclists easily feel tired dah sore. Not only that, the selection of the wrong saddle can also affect the position of the body that causes cycling to become uncomfortable. INDUSTRIAL - STANLEY SUGANDA

38

INDUSTRIAL - STANLEY SUGANDA

Processing Techniques The construction of the folding bicycle saddle itself consists of several parts, namely the upper cross section of the saddle, per, and the rail connecting the front of the saddle with the back. This construction is a basic type of construction on each saddle. Materials from the cross-section of saddles are also different, some are made of plastic or leather. Criteria Design What : Design a folding bicycle saddle that is comfortable and safe to use. This folding bicycle saddle focuses on the size, thickness of the foam, and positioning of each bike component. Because the use of bicycles with saddles that are not suitable or uncomfortable on long trips can cause pain in certain areas such as the groin area. In addition to saddles, sitting position is also important to avoid fatigue so that cycling can be more comfortable and light. 39

The bicycle saddle that the author will design pays attention to certain factors and aspects such as the user’s comfort in using a folding bicycle compared to other bicycles (example: sitting position). Therefore, the author tries to collect data from various sources as an example is to interview various bicycle users, especially folding bicycles. Who : For adulthood, both women and men. When : Saddle is used when cycling both as a means of sports and as a means of transportation. Why : Because the author wants to make a saddle that is comfortable, and safe for everyone. How : Design saddles that optimize the ergonomic aspects of bicycle saddles. With the construction of the bottom saddle using a spring, the cross-section of the saddle is made larger by utilizing memory foam.

INDUSTRIAL - STANLEY SUGANDA

Conclusion Design a folding bicycle saddle by focusing on the main material and construction of the saddle itself. Ensure that the foam used in this design is not too soft but also not too hard so that it is able to support the body without changing the position of the body when cycling. This focuses on making cycling on a folding bike more comfortable and less prone to fatigue. In addition to utilizing rebounded foam, the author also utilizes memory foam, to maintain and shape the posture of cyclists so that it is more comfortable to use. In addition, the author also focuses on bicycle cover material, namely leather. The author chose two skin types that were adjusted to the saddle position itself, on the side the author chose a more porous leather material so as not to make sultry and airflow remain smooth. For the top, the author selects the material skin with a smoother character so it does not interfere when cycling. 40

In focusing on this issue, based on the author’s observations, the author can draw the conclusion that not all saddle forms are bad. There are basically shortcomings of folding bicycle saddles that the author has researched, but it does not close the possibility to develop it. Therefore, the author remodeled the folding bicycle saddle that the author had meticulously tried and the author tried together with several correspondents to determine the most comfortable folding bicycle saddle in terms of its shape. After that the author re-restored by replacing the material from the saddle and completing the shortcomings so that it becomes a folding bicycle saddle that is more comfortable to use and reduces the pain in long-term use.

THE DESIGN OF SOOT COLLECTING DEVICE IN FOUR-WHEELED VEHICLES INDUSTRIAL

47

INDUSTRIAL - VANESSA WILLIAM

Urban cities, such as Jakarta, tend to be more polluted than rural areas. The major source of air pollution in Indonesia comes from transportation activities, especially four-wheeled vehicles.

“WHAT IS THE PROBLEM?”

According to Badan Pusat Statistik (BPS), the number of the four-wheeled automobile has increased by about 6.19% per year from 2016 to 2018. One of the particles that are harmful to the environment and humans is PM 2.5 or soot. Due to it’s small size, these particles cannot be detected by the naked eyes and can effortlessly enter the human body. Once it enters our body, it can disrupt the respiratory system and increase the risk of lung cancer. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 7 million people died due to air pollution, making it one of the leading common causes of death. Hence, the rise of the automobile each year has an impact on the levels of soot in Indonesia.

48

INDUSTRIAL - VANESSA WILLIAM

“WHAT IS THE SOLUTION?”

The aim of this study was to design a soot collecting device for four-wheeled vehicle with an efficient system of application and extracting soot to minimze the contribution of soot in the air. This protective mask is a new model of mask mainly designed for protecting wearer against airborne particles including bacteria and viruses. It is also designed with a “window” on the middle of the mask to reveal mouth part. It is purpose for wearer show their expression. The reason protective mask is created because after a long period of research, observation, questionnaires, interviews, and other methods, I found out a lot of problems when people are wearing ordinary masks. Two major problems are it was suffocating when wearing on face and irritating the skin. Other minor problem is the wearer’s face being hindered by the mask. 55

EXPLORATION OF KURINUKI TECHNIQUE FOR CERAMIC PRODUCT DESIGN CRAFT

61

CRAFT - AVERINA ADITYA

“WHAT CAN BE DEVELOPED?”

The COVID-19 pandemic has a huge impact on the sustainability of the industry. According to Bekraf 2018, creative industries such as handmade craft contributed greatly to the creative economy. One of the areas built from the creative industries is ceramics, a product that has many functions as a household appliance and also has a high appreciation and aesthetic value. This shows that creative workers can participate in developing it. In addition, this opportunity is seen from no limitations of ceramic exploration. Kurinuki technique is a technique to hollow out solid block of clay by carving and it can produce ceramic works with textures that are not obtained from other techniques. Although this technique has its own characteristics, this technique is not commonly used in the production of ceramics.

62

Therefore, this experiment aims to explore the potential of the technique to offer novelty to the creative industries in Indonesia. CRAFT - AVERINA ADITYA

HERE’S THE PROCESS

Based on research and exploration process that has been done, the author began to design ceramic products that match the uniqueness of the technique and characteristics of materials. Kurinuki technique has the ability for everyone who want to learn pottery with simple methods and tools, in addition to displaying the impression of expressive handmade products through the treatment done by potters. From the results of exploration, the author chose cutting and tearing method, which is the best way to show the uniqueness of Kurinuki according to QFD. In addition, the author also limited production time with the aim of displaying the characteristics of the potter and clay itself. The survey results showed great interest in aesthetic and functional products, so the author decided to make lidded jars, vase, and pot as the final product. In addition, finishing is not done to show raw results. 63

CRAFT - AVERINA ADITYA

HOW TO MAKE KURINUKI

64

CRAFT - AVERINA ADITYA

Kurinuki technique has great potential in producing ceramics in an unusual way. A prominent characteristic is its ability to make ceramics with artistic and irregular forms, as well as doing so without having to have special skills or tools. Even so, making Kurinuki products has many conditions that need to be considered and a long working time when compared to other ceramic techniques. Failure is not present in ceramics with other production techniques, and this may explain why this technique is still not prevalent even among ceramics itself. However, this is also why Kurinuki is very interesting and has the potential to be explored further. The exploration of Kurinuki is endless, there are many aspects that can be explored more deeply to obtain unique visual effects. This is the reason why it is difficult to say that Kurinuki has the ‘most correct’ way, as each work process can provide its own visual effects. Potter can utilize exploration in these parts to get the visual aesthetic they want for their work. 65

Surely Kurinuki itself can be made to be both kinds of works, want it as a unit artwork or simple products made in large numbers. But with this technique, ceramics have the opportunity to create works that have artistic elements with a sculptural sculptural style, so that the author feels that ceramic artist is a suitable person to explore this technique. If the work is made as a work of art, then perhaps the work will be judged higher and ultimately worth the effort given by the ceramicist in making it, seeing the complexity and risk of failure that needs to be passed by him as well. However, there are no rules for making Kurinuki’s work and any ceramicist can choose what kind of work he wants. Kurinuki itself has a degree of difficulty, there are some ways of making it that may be easier than others. Low difficulty levels are more replicability and can be applied to simpler repetitive products. The kinds of works that want to be remade are decided according to each ceramic. Layering techniques and texturing techniques will be explored as a main exploration. This technique is a common technique and easy to

use, but from the research of ceramicists in the world, this technique has not been developed further by the ceramicists. Whereas the author sees the potential that can be developed from layering and texturing techniques to produce more complex textures and find a right combination of both techniques. So the author wants to try to find the potential and innovation of the technique and get different results, so that the final product can be more valuable.

68

CRAFT - EMILY EVELYN

“CONCEPT DESIGN”

From the results of exploration, the best clay layering technique is clay with irregular round shape because the product becomes stronger and not easily broken. Then, layering slips using the hand show the most depth effect, and the last texturing technique used is the incising technique because the resulting texture is small and smooth. Nirmana becomes the theme of the final product that is very suitable with the results of exploration with a target market aged 25 years - 35 years. So that the design of shapes, colors, and textures for the final prototype will pay attention to the principles of nirmana which is balance, unity, proportion, rhythm, and center of interest. Turquoise, black, and light brown colors will be the main colors of the final prototype collection. The keywords taken for the final product theme are contemporary, artistic, and textured. 69

WOMEN’S FISH SCALES WASTE FASHION JEWELRY DESIGN WITH SURFACE EMBELLISHMENT TECHNIQUE FOR SEQUINS CRAFT

73

CRAFT - MILLEN VALENSIE

Indonesia has experienced an increase in production in the fishing sector for the last 7 years and this has indirectly led to an increase in fish waste, and fish scales is one of them.

WHAT IS THE PROBLEM?

Fish scales have unique patterns, surface textures and

colors so they are often used

as a handicraft material such as jewelry by Indonesian MSME players, especially in Ambon and Manado. Although the Indonesian fish scales jewelry market has been around for a long time, the processing techniques such as dyeing and material application are not innovative, resulting in monotonous designs. The aim of this research is to produce fish scales fashion jewelry for women that is expected to increase public appreciation, innovative and suit the needs of

74

the Indonesian market. CRAFT - MILLEN VALENSIE

WHAT IS THE SOLUTION?

After doing several experiments on the material, surface embellishment was then chosen as the best technique for assembling the material into large dimensions. The coloring material used is a mixture of synthetic and natural food dyes to produce soft colors on the scales. From the prototype experiments that have been carried out, this design will produce 4 products and are divided into 2 types; signature (large, editorial) and bread & butter (small, daily).

DESIGNING HDPE PLASTIC WASTE WOMEN’S BAGS WITH COMPRESSION MOLDING TECHNIQUES CRAFT

79

CRAFT - NADHIFAH AZZAHRAH

“WHAT IS THE PROBLEM?”

Indonesia ranks as the second largest plastic waste producing country in the world with a total of 1.29 million metric tons of waste ending up at sea every year. Not only that, in his journal he also mentioned that as much as 3.22 million metric tons of plastic waste in Indonesia has not been managed properly. Besides plastic, environmental problems also come from the fashion sector. Fashion is one of the largest pollution producing industries in the world. Untraceable processes, value chains, and human consumption behavior are the source of the problem. This makes many fashion brands began to be moved to put more importance on environmental aspects and sustainability. One example can be seen from brands such as Patagonia, Everlane, Rothy’s, Stella McCartney, and even Adidas that started using recycled materials, including plastic waste from the sea, in their product lines.

80

CRAFT - NADHIFAH AZZAHRAH

“WHAT IS THE SOLUTION” Both of these problems can be answered by designing fashion items made from environmentally friendly materials, recycled plastics. One of the waste materials that has a lot of potential for recycling is HDPE waste in a form of plastic bottle caps. This material will be processed by compression molding technique which is a molding technique by heating the material and giving a pressure. Its strong character and bright color give this material an opportunity to turn to be a hard-shell bag. Based on the survey conducted by the authors, most respondents chose bag as the products they were most interested in making with HDPE plastic waste material. This design is also supported by the development of fashion industry in Indonesia which has increased from year to year. In 2019 the fashion sector itself ranked first in the export of the creative economy which reached 56% of the total exports of the creative economy. From this case it can be concluded that the fashion sector has a great opportunity to develop new businesses. 81

The end result of this research is a collection of hard shell bags. The design, color, and accent chosen for this bag collection are selected based on FGD that has been held with respondents that represent the target market. The aesthetic style chosen for this bag is kidcore. With combination of bright colors and emphasize kidcore aesthetic style, this product is considered to be accepted by Indonesian market especially young generation. In addition, by purchasing this product, buyers also participate in reducing plastic waste and campaigning for sustainable fashion. Similar products made with recycled plastic waste are also still rare in Indonesia so it is also a special attraction for the product. 83

CRAFT - SHARON B. E. FRANKIE

A National heritage treasure created from the limitless creativity of Indonesian society. Nifitali-tali is a handcrafted necklace worn by head hunters as a symbol of glory and power.

“NIFITALI-TALI HAS GRADUALLY BECOME EXTINCT DUE TO MODERNIZATION OF OUR SOCIETY”

86

Nifitali-tali have an intricate level of techniques, however as society changes the craftsmen who were able to make it are no longer there because the jewellery has not been used for a long time. For that reason we are looking for ways to be able to produce it easily so that this technique does not go instinct.

CRAFT - SHARON B. E. FRANKIE

“WHAT IS THE SOLUTION?”

Because the original making technique of Nifitali-tali are all formed by hand manually, it requires special skills that are difficult and took a long time to master, therefore the solution to this problem found from various experiment that has been done, is to make a base for the jewelry that has been shaped according to the desired shape and design. Because Nifitali-tali has a characteristic of a spiral that shrinks and enlarges so the most suitable and has the neatest result is to use a ball shaped base that can be adjusted according to the desired design. in addition, the design made to apply the technique, is designed to have a contemporary style in order to attract the public’s attention the design also has a concept that is the background of the nifitali-tali so that the story behind it can also be told trough the jewelry. 87

to develop new things that are unique and can attract consumer interest. The mixing of the two materials is often used by potters but not as an accent decoration but to increase the strength of a ceramic so that it can stand in extreme temperature changes. This mixture are very often when potters burning raku. The use of this material as a decorative accent is very interesting from the background of the story until the end of result. it can chance the people’s perspective about pottery decoration always use toxic materials.

(foto ideation/ sketsa/ grafik pemecahan masalah)

The research began with the search for secondary data on sand and interviews, then continued with exploration of mixing and burning to find ceramics with a mixture of sand that was not easily broken and produced natural and abstract motifs. From all the research results, the writer found that Malang sand and Semarang beach sand had the most positive results compared to other types of sand, Malang sand and Semarang beach sand could melt and produce unique motifs and have a darker black color after being burned. The technique of mixing sand and clay also has very various kinds, by wadging, sowing, mixing with glaze, etc. Using a mixture of sand and clay can use most pottery techniques. There are many motives that can be generated from the two mixtures.

(foto ideation/ sketsa/ grafik pemecahan masalah)

95

After conducting data searches, experiments and exploring the mixing of these two materials, the authors designed a product that matched the material’s characteristics. From the results of the experiment mixing sand with clay, semarang beach sand and poor sand chosen to continue. This is because the poor sand and semarang beach sand have the same characteristics that melt when burned and give rise to a color that becomes deep black. The differentiator of these two sand materials is that the poor sand has a larger grain size and rough compared to semarang beach sand which has fine grains and is very small

Mixing sand material on clay provides a unique motif and always produces different results in each manufacture. Ceramic products that have a simple design become more attractive and more detailed with the presence of a mixture of sand on the ceramic part. The use of sand itself can be applicationed in the manufacture of any ceramic just need to adjust to the right measure. In ceramics with a mixture of sand produces a louder sound than without a mixture of sand, this can not be proven significantly because many other supporting factors such as the thickness of the thin ceramic, the shape of the chamber, the smooth roughness of the mouth of the large chamber chamber and others.

The technique of mixing sand material with clay has the potential as a decorative accent on ceramics, the characteristics of sand that can melt after burning can produce motifs that can not be repeated or will not be the same every time the maker gives a more unique impression. Mixing both materials gives the impression of complicated motives but does not take much time in the manufacturing process, in the production process of making ceramics with decoration mixing sand with clay is very time-saving because the combustion is done only 1 time and decorations do not need to be formed one by one melaikan only need to be sown, or mixed during the process of fattening and then formed as usual, however the use of this material still has a lot of things to note , combustion is done up to high temperatures, mixing materials can not necessarily blend with certain techniques, in the process of burning sand can drip in kilns or goods can blend into each other if not careful. The results of the exploration of mixing sand with clay is very extensive, the use of this material can be applied to most ceramics and can be used with a variety of techniques. The visual results produced from the poor sand itself are more abstract and natural. While on the sand the beach is easier to form or set. 97

Indonesian plants can be natural dyes because they have chemical compound pigments. From this exploration, it produces various kinds of color gradations which are also influenced by several factors; immersion time, type of mordant or fixation, and the acidity of the material used. The results of color extraction depend on the amount of water and plant material used. After exploration with the fixation of alum, calcium oxide, and tunjung, they produced different colors. The use of alum produces the original color, the use of calcium oxide results in a brighter color, and the use of tunjung makes the color darker. In addition to using natural dyes that are environmentally friendly, the use of natural dyes is also environmentally friendly. Therefore, the use of natural dyes is suitable in designing children’s products, because the use of natural ingredients is safe for children’s skin. It is also a medium for children in getting to know new colors every day. 103

In the beginning of 2020, Novel Coronavirus as known as COVID-19 spread to the whole world becoming a Pandemic. Besides the health issues, it also caused economic issues too, especially to Small, Medium, and Micro Enterprises (SMME) in Indonesia. Vehicle customization workshop is one of the SMME that heavily impacted such as Eagle Modified workshop. This workshop usually made custom body kit and worked on full custom car. But, with this Pandemic, Kevin as the owner wanted to sell ready-to-sell-body kit, instead of custom made. After some experiments and data gatehrinng, can be concluded that the main problems are: design (boring, unrefined) and production development (time, mirroring). For design, a new concpet needed to be implemented to bodykit design. Based on the choosen keyword : Sporty & Stand out, the new Concept for te Bodykit is Racing Car. Racing car will cathes eyes o the street bt also very sporty, harmonious with Lamborghini DNA. For Production development, experimet was done to redUce prototyping time, increase accuracy, and helps with mirroring process. Techniques used were: 3D Scan and Slice Form. With 3D Scan, 3 design process can be done digitally and also more accurately, plus it can be mirrored in application easily. Slice form helped the shaping process by giving reference point that can be used by the sculpter.

“WHAT IS HAPPENING IN THE MARKET?”

114

Today, men are more daring to experiment and express themselves through jewelry. Study have shown that there has been an increase in sales for men’s jewelry in the market. This new wave has hit every corner of the jewelry industry, inspiring old brands to pursue customers who identify with a bolder man. Rosalyncitta, as a jewelry brand that continues to move forward with the flow of global fashion, realizes that this is one of the customer’s needs that must be met. Several material explorations were conducted to find processing techniques best suited for this design as well as Rosalyncitta’s design language to help cater men’s jewelry. If we talk about materials, today many great designers around the world are exploring radical alternatives for precious metal. Trying out different materials gives innovators the opportunity to be more creative, creating some spectacular original results and from a sustainable design standpoint it opens up options for materials that can be used in high-quality jewelery. INTERNSHIP - NADYA A. D. WIRIAATMADJA

“WHAT CAN WE DO ABOUT IT?” The designs are made based on data collected from user interviews to make sure it is also based on the market preference and needs; shape, wearability, and good quality of craftmanship. Several material explorations were conducted to find processing techniques best suited for this design as well as Rosalyncitta’s design language to help cater men’s jewelry. The technique was chosen based on its color, wearability, good quality of craftmanship, and level of experience. After some analyzing, Anodizing is the technique chosen for this design.

The anodizing technique basically uses the principle of electrolysis. In the electrolysis cell, t he anode is connect ed to the aluminum metal which will be anodized and the cathode is connected to another aluminum metal (McCreight, 1991). After anodizing, we can give color to the alumunium surface which aims to give a more attractive impression or freedom of creation. Anodized alumunium is also hypoallergenic so it will be comfortable to be worn on skin as jewelry.

115

After conducting several interviews and surveys about users’ preferences on men’s jewelry from 100 respondents worldwide, various dummies were made to see which geometrical shape captures the attention of the market most. From that we develop the designs from the preference shape and the selected finsihing from material exploration of anodizing process. Screw system was also used for the designs as it is proven that screw system is the most clean and strong to hold every component together. INTERNSHIP - NADYA A. D. WIRIAATMADJA

Sketch ideas are made into 3 kinds of shoes with different designs. The first design is made with loafer or strapless models, the second design is made with buck models, the third design is made with blucher models. This basic design was created to provide comparisons for the design of daily service shoe designs After making changes from the initial idea sketch, then obtained a design that will be used as a daily service shoe design. From the design is then made an alternative design that is distinguished on the number of duck eyes or holes for shoelaces used. For the design of the shoe body is done shape adjustment to make it simpler. From these two alternatives, a design was chosen with four holes of shoelaces or duck eyes. This is because the production process will be easier and reduce the cost of using materials.

From the sketch of the selected idea, the development is done for the rough and smooth part of the out sole. There are 2 design alternatives, the first has only part rough part, the second has more rough parts. From the comparison of the two design alternatives, the second design was chosen. The second design was chosen because in addition to making the shoes have a stronger grip, making the out sole look more sturdy and strong as well.

Prototype of the design of the daily service shoes tni au using syntetic microfiber material on the body of the shoe and using material TPR (Thermoplastic Rubber) on the out sole. On the shoelaces, these shoes use rubber straps that do not need to be tied. Making it easier for users to remove pairs of shoes without interfering with the comfort in the use of shoes. From the materials used will also have a good impact on the environment. Because the use of syntetic microfiber will reduce the use of materials, and this material also has good resistance so it will not be easy to become garbage. On the contrary with leather materials, it may be safer for the environment, but it will not be completely safe because the leather materials used use chemical dyes that are not safe for the environment. Moreover, with the durability of the old product is not good to make the old model shoes quickly become garbage and be a bad impact for the environment. 123

The conclusion of this design is that the old air force’s daily service shoes have a poor design. It can be said that there are many complaints from users and after evaluation there were some problems in the design of old models of shoes. The problem that most affects the bad design is the material used is not good because it uses dry cowhide material that is classified as hard enough if used. In addition, with the limitations of production at that time, these old design shoes had less use power. And the other problem is the price is quite high with quality that is not worth the price. From this problem the author managed to redesign the shoes with better materials, lighter weight, and better durability. In addition, the price of these new design shoes is cheaper and can certainly save the budget of the government for the Indonesia Air Force’s daily service shoes

This design project along with Braow Goods. Braow Goods is a brand which produces it’s products handmade to meet the standards of artisans.

In new normal era, we have found few problems. And some problems were found before a product finished from designing. As simple example : some people who went travelling often bring a mask with backup mask. But this kind of people maybe made some mistake like put their mask on unhygiene place while they didn’t use it. Next example of this problems we couldn’t touch a surface directly but possibility really low because we often touch a surface directly, and sanitizer hard to get.

Sports equiment brands and manufacture in Indonesia are run into significant development. If previously dominated by global market and garments, the Small and Medium Micro Enterprises (MSMEs) industry is now startinng to show its existence. This be in accordance with government programs about the empowerment of MSMEs and the use of local products. MSMEs of Local Sports Equipment are starting to be confident to produce products under their own brand and cooperate with proffesional sports teams. However, nowdays there are nnot many pioneers of MSMEs sports equipment brands thath cann exist until Now. Strong Character, idealism and consistency in maintaining product quiality iis what makes some brands can survive until today.

The authors conducted a case study on sports quiment brands fromm Tangerang, RIORS. Te purpose of the applicationn of product development theory in the MSME industry is not only to improve practical performance but to grow mindsets and habits in the longterm development of the Company.

This research in depth discusses the application of product development theorry in the MSMEs sports equipmnet industry. 134

“GROWTH OF MSMEs SPORTSWEAR INDUSTRY AND WHY IT IS IMPORTANT TO APPLY PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT THEORY” RESEARCH - ROBERTUS MALVIN NICO M.

The main goal is to do in-depth research on the theoretical approach of product development at RIORS sportswear brand. As a brand that is experiencing rapid development in terms of brand image, innovationn and product quaillity, author wants to analyze trough two theories oof apporach: Concurrent Engineering & Countinuous Improvement (Kaizen). (foto ideation/ sketsa/ grafik pemecahan masalah)

SEQUENTIAL ENGINEERING & CONCURRENT ENGINEERING

INTEGRATED PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT

135

Concurrent Engineering is a systematic approach to integrate product design processes and processes reated to them which include manufactring and supporting processes. This Approach results in product designers should pay attetion to and consider all aspects of the product life cycle from conceptioon up to disposal or recycling,, including aspects of quality, cost, schedule, and needs of products users.

Kaizen comes from Japanese language: Kai (improvement) and Zen (good) which means Continuos Improvement. The strength of this Kaizen Principle is full participation of all workers in providing advice for the development of business. Kaizen’s priciples in the process can have an impact on the level of humanity in the work environment, eliminate waste in business processes. The process of applying the Kaizen principle through small steps rather that drastic changes. Altough the changes are small but the process can bring great results over time. Kaizen is a loow-risk and inexpensive approach so that it does not require huge invesment in its applicatiion. As a result, Kaizen encourages workers to experiment and try new ideas. But when the new idea didn’t work, they can always improve without incuring large costs.

RESEARCH - ROBERTUS MALVIN NICO M.

136

RESEARCH - ROBERTUS MALVIN NICO M.

The main principle of Continuous Improvement/ Kaizen is through small stages instead of drastic changes also in accordance with RIORS (CV. Java Sportindo) which departs from MSMEs where they are still developing and continues to adjust to the dynamic development of the sportswear business.

This theory also encourages the level of creatvvity and self-development off worers iin a company so that when there are changes or improvements there is no need to spend a large fee.

RIORS as sportswear SMSE brand has standardized spesfications on its products so as to facilitate the research & development in the future. Their computerized process has a great impact on the output of the products produced. In this case RIORS product output is maintained in quality and has consistent measurements & sizing. The product development theory that can be applied is Continuous Improvement/ Kaizen where through the results of interviews ad observations that have been done facts that occur shows that RIORS is a sportswear brand that is undergoing development and improvement slowly to achieve a standarization of garment quality. This is in line with the teory of continuous improvemet/kaizen where improvement and development is don through small stages so that if there are changes can be directly evaluated quickly and do not require high costs. 137

RESEARCH - ROBERTUS MALVIN NICO M.

(foto produk akhir)

Two methods to reach continuous improvement/ kaizen is asking 5whys and do the gemba walk. The root cause of the problem using method 5 whys comes from Toyota Production System. Asking “why?” 5 times helps developers find basic problems and solutions as clearly as possible. The key to the success of the application of this technique is the right decision making based on the actual data that occurs in the field. This process of analysis and collection of information should involve the person directly involved in a process. Meanwhile, gemba walk is a concept developed by Taiichi Ohno that mea ns a review of a process not with data but rather a direct look at where a process is running to observe, analyze possible improvements and developments that can be applied. 3 main elements of gemba walk are Go & see, ask why, and respect people to try to find problems in the process, not the person. 138
